Internationally, we are now seeing the elite genomic bulls of the world being released, initially at least in single sexed format. This is being used to create a market advantage by the respective company over their competitors. This in turn allows them to breed the next generation of elite sires with the help of their ‘star pupil’. The demand for genomic bulls has surpassed even it’s the greatest advocates expectations. Over 50% of all semen sold in Northern America is genomic. A positive off-shoot of this is that the top end proven sires are relatively cheaper than compared to 5-6 years ago.
The Australian market has also seen some changes to the expression of data. We now have 3 different formula’s by which to rank individual bulls. This has come about after ADHIS (Australian Dairy Herd Improvement Scheme) conducted plenty of research with the farmer. These indexes are the Balanced Performance Index (BPI), Health Weighted Index (HWI) and Type Weighted Index (TWI).
On March 17th we held our 3rd Leading Edge Genetics Elite Sale. The sale realised a very pleasing average of $5,447. A full report later in the newsletter.
One of the highlights on the Leading Edge Genetics calendar each year is our On-Farm Competition. We are proud to recognise it is one of the largest of its kind in Australia. Our judge for this year’s competition is Mrs. Fiona Hanks – more later in the newsletter.

AUSTRALIAN HOLSTEIN PROOFSThere was a changing of the guard in BPI rankings for the August 2015 proof run.
Lifting 17 points saw the Roumare son, Christmas from Genetics Australian take the number 1 mantle. Christmas has tremendous frames for a Roumare son and is smaller stature. This is much like his maternal grand sire, the highly respected Elite Gold Bullion.
The Planet son from the well-known Page House Shottle Noni (Ex) in Niels from the ABS stable also lifted 25 points to move to number 3 on the listing. The type listing is dominated by overseas bulls with converted proofs. Guthrie whilst having many milking daughters in Australia is still to get a debut proof in Australia for type but converts out at 118 type and 117 Mammary. Atwood and Dempsey at 110 for type are Australia’s equal highest rated type sires with both possessing outstanding udders at 114 and 112 respectively.
Interestingly tied for 3rd place is the Boliver son in Chase from ABS and the Roumare son Barbadas from Genetics Australia.

AUSTRALIAN JERSEY PROOFSBroadlin Hatman (Navara/Manhatten) debut at number 1 with a BPI of 356 was the highlight from the recent ABV run.
This Semex bull is unfortunately no longer alive thus semen stocks are extremely limited. The Tbone son from AltaGenetics in Cairnbone has now lifted to 120 on mammary system to be the number 1 udder sire and the leading type sire at 113. This 3rd place BPI sire also is one of the highest semen fertility bulls in the breed at +5.31%.
Whilst well known sires in Bartpower (GAC) and AltaGalaxies are ranked 2nd and 3rd for overall type.

TRANSITION CORRECTLY OR NOT TO TRANSITIONThe transition period refers to 3 weeks prior to calving to 3 weeks post calving. This is one of the most critical periods for the cows to ensure that she is adequately prepared to handle the pressure of calving, early lactation to maximize peak production and limit health issues.
Over the dry period many cows are just fed pasture and some hay. Hay in the dry period is important to maintain rumen structure, without hay/fibre the rumen may contract slightly reducing the amount of dry matter intake once calved. Over the dry period the rumen starch bugs have decreased, so when cows come back into the milking herd and have a diet high in starch there is often an imbalance in the bug population with very few starch bugs available to fully utilise the concentrates fed. The rumen can take up 30 days or more to adjust. Ideal time to start the transition diet is 21 days before calving. The diet is not all about just using anionic salts in a proper lead feed concentrate it is also about getting the cow setup for production.
By lead feeding compared to not at all, can potentially increase production at peak of 1-2L/cow equating to 200-300L (keeping everything all equal) over the lactation. Milk price @ 40cL x 200to300L= $80 to $120/cow/year. Now to develop a good transition ration.
There are two options for the concentrates. 1) Use a specific lead feed concentrate with Anionic Salts or Soychlor. 0 Cost Concentrate average $550T = 52c/kg @ 3kg/day/cow for 21 days = $35/cow.
2) Use your milker concentrate feed from the shed and add Magnesium Chloride (Mag C) to the water trough at 80-120grams/cow/day relative to body weight (seek advice if unsure of these rates) o Cost 3kg milker ration $400T @ 3kg/day for 2ldays = $25/cow + $3 Mag C = $28/cow. Net benefit could be in the range of $45 to $85cow/year with a decent lead feed and correct transition phase. With an adequate lead feed we also need adlib hay/fodder with low Potassium (K), harvested off low fertility paddocks. Any bought in feed ideally want a low DCAD (Dietery Cation and Anion Difference) such as oaten hay to provide a correct DCAB. This is the balance of positive (Cations) and negative ions (Anions) within the rumen, with an aim to have more negative ions which mobilizes the cows own reserves of calcium carbonate and is critical in assisting the prevention of clinical and subclinical milk fevers.

Genetics Australia, has dominated the August round of Australian Breeding Values, claiming No. 1 Holstein on the new Balanced Performance Index (BPI) with CHRISTMAS, with 99 daughters in his proof, this reliable sire has been identified as a potential chart-topper ever since the release of his first genomic breeding values back in 2010.
Supporting CHRISTMAS is the Goldwyn son, GOLDCREST, who comes in at No. 2 BPI and No. 3 on the Health Weighted Index (HWI). GOLDCREST also featured highly on the genomic rankings when he was first released for progeny testing.
New graduates, JENKINS and FLASHBACK, both added daughters to their April proofs and showed improvements across the three new breeding indices. At 113 for Mammary System, JENKINS is one of the highest rated bulls in the breed with daughters milking and classified in Australia. FLASHBACK continues to impress with his balanced proof and is fast becoming one of our most popular sires available with SEXED ULTRA™ semen production.
Jersey sire, RACEWAY ranking No. 2 for BPI, now with more than 100 daughters in his proof, RACEWAY has made a seamless transition from being a high-ranking genomic sire to a breed-leading proven sire with 112 for mammary and positive daughter fertility.
Genetics Australia sires occupy 76 of the top 100 Holstein sires on the genomic rankings, including the No. 1 BPI sire, ROYALPIC. He is joined by five other PICOLA sons in the top 10 genomic rankings – VIZABULL, VALIUM, REACTOR, VERMOUTH and MILKMORE.
Likewise, Genetics Australia bulls claimed the No. 1 position on the genomic rankings for the Jersey breed with DROGO.

CANADIAN HOLSTEIN PROOFSTwo of the more talked about sires in Northern America, Mogul and Numero Uno added significant daughters to move 2nd and 3rd on LPI listing.
Mogul has 269 daughters now and lifted to + 12 on type. Whilst the former 1 genomic sire of the world Numero Uno lifted 250 LPI since the April proof run and is sitting 2nd on the list. However, the Garrett son from Genervations/WWS in Brewmaster still holds the number 1 ranking.
The highly acclaimed Bookem son in McCutchen is the highest new addition to the list placing 4th. His strong components, outstanding overall type and tremendous temperament will see him impact the breed for many years.
On the type front in Canada the lead is shared by Dempsey, Bradnick and Gold Chip all at +18 for overall type.
AMERICAN HOLSTEIN PROOFSSupersire caught everyone off-guard with his huge lift in the August proof.
This Robust/Planet son is now 145 TPI points above the highly respected Mogul. Supersire is also the number 1 Net Merit and Feed Efficiency Sire.
Interestingly, Supersire brother in Headliner graduated at #4 with an impressive overall type pattern of 2.21, somewhat higher (1.62) than his famous sibling. Mr OCD Planet Donatello (Robust/Planet) is another Select Sires success story graduating at #3. This outstanding productive life sire (6.93) has already proven himself a sire of the next generation through his much acclaimed genomic son in Bayonet.
One of the highlights of the August run was the debut proof of Sully Hart Merdian (Domain/Planet) from Semex. He has 868 daughters in his production (386 type) and is 1865 lbs of milk coupled with an impressive 2.87 on overall type and 2.66 on udders. His linear is nothing short of outstanding.
The tremendous daughter photos reflect his outstanding dairy form score of + 3.21 and 3.74 and 3.44 for height and width of rear udders.

LEADING EDGE GENETICS SALEA huge crowd of over 300 people were in attendance at the 3rd Leading Edge Genetics Elite Sale. Held on Tuesday night March 17th at the Warragul Showgrounds many outstanding Holstein and Jerseys were offered up for sale. Top price at $10,000 was Lot 5 for the choice of 2 Gillette Windbrook daughters from the former All-Canadian Senior 3 in Pineland Goldwyn Tidbit. The successful purchaser was Maxmount Holstein, Warragul. Lot 1 Wellerleigh Atwood Ashlyn Imp from the noted Ashlyn cow family was sold for $8500 to Hannah Bland at Foster. First time vendors Winaview Holsteins made $6,700 for the extremely well grown imported Liquid Gold daughter from the Juror Faith cow family to local breeder Troy Smethurst. One of the more correct heifers in the sale was Lot 11 Dumbarton Shottle Beau who sold to Wendy Sargeant, Darnum for $6,600.

The sale line up ready to go under the hammer
The 7 Jerseys offered for sale averaged just under $4,000. Local breeder Rob and Kerry Anderson sold an outstanding forward springing Tbone daughter in Kings Ville Canary 45 to the Castles family from Yinnar. The milking heifer in Morningside Vanahlem Noella 4149 had plenty of admirers and was eventually knocked down to discerning breeder Cameron Thompson from Tasmania for $4900.
Rengaw Holsteins successfully bid $1,900 per embryo from the 7 Kobra eggs from AltaOak daughter of Seagull-Bay Miss America (sister to Supersire). Whilst Western Districts breeder the Van Beck family took home the 4 Doorman embryos from Massico Winbrook Charly VG 88 (2Yr) at $1400/each.
The overall sale average was a very pleasing $5,447.

LEADING EDGE GENETICS ON-FARM COMPETITION FOR 2015: Leading Edge Genetics is delighted to announce that Fiona Hanks (pictured) will be the judge for our 2015 On-Farm competition.
Fiona has a wealth of judging experience. These include numerous On-Farm competitions,over-judge at the youth camp and many country shows.
Highlights from the August 2015 Holstein proof release was the performance of GALAXY who received his first full Type and Production daughter proof in the USA which saw a huge increase for his Type traits in Australia; up from +100 to +112 for Overall Type and from +103 to +113 for Udders. Galaxy has all the excellent Health Traits of his sire but in a better all-round Type package and is also now available as Sexed Ultra Semen.
From the USA “Mogul” sons DELTA and RUBICON continue to rank high on the Top Genomic lists with semen available. Both bulls increased again with Delta now over +2700 TPI and +900 NM$ and Rubicon is at +2681 TPI with +2 for PTAT.
Delta’s “Shotglass” brother DOZER is also high for GTPI at +2614 with excellent Fertility and Longevity. He also ranks very high in Canada where he is the No.2 GLPI Sire at +3351.
Two other high TPI Genomic Sires of note are MEGASIRE and TROY; both bulls are over +2600 GTPI with outstanding Fertility Traits. MEGASIRE is a former No.1 GTPI Sire who is now over +3 for DPR and is also under +6 for Calving Ease with over 300 actual observations.
From the Jersey front; A2/A2 “Valerian” son Nowell Viper (VIPOR) debuted at No.5 on the BPI list, No.2 for HWI & No.6 for TWI. He offers good Type with fantastic Udders; he is a positive Component bull and is a farmer favourite with great Workabilities. Vipor hails from the much admired “Nowell Sandy” cow family and is a full brother to No.2 BPI Sire “Raceway”.

In March this year I toured some of America’s large herds with World Wide Sires Australia.The following are some of the bulls that I was impressed with:
Mogul (Dorcy /Marsh)We had the opportunity to see lots of daughters of this highly ranked sire. They are medium sized cows with good feet and legs and outstanding udders. Their rear udders are high and wide and they have a tremendous will to milk. Farmer feedback was that they were great cattle to work with.
Epic (Super/Baxter)The Epic daughters are beautiful dairy cows. They have style, clean over their shoulder and a beautiful head and neck to them. This bull has a great ability to put some frame into his daughters. More importantly they have plenty of production; they calve easy and are also very fertile. They are cows that move freely through their feet and legs. Udders were exceptional, particularly his ability to put teat length into cows. Epic was the pick of the bulls for me.
Guthrie (Goldwyn/Blitz)They were very youthful dairy heifers that will make tremendous cows. Udders were a real feature of the Guthrie daughters. These heifers were of average stature and perhaps a little wetter than his proof suggested. A very consistent bull and farmers enjoy milking them.
He-Man (Man-O-Man/Goldwyn)He-Man daughters are midsized cows with tremendous rib structure. He is a bull for the future that ideally suits robotic milkers. The centre ligament is exceptionally strong on his daughters but, the rear teat placement is more to the outside of the quarter. This coupled with good teat length makes him a user friendly bull. Other areas he excels in are calving ease, daughter pregnancy rate and he is a high conception rate sire.
