INTRODUCTION
On behalf of the program co-sponsors, the Walla Walla Valley Chamber of Commerce and Walla Walla Community College, we commend these outstanding participants. Leadership Walla Walla is also indebted to the volunteers, the sponsoring busi-nesses and agencies, and the presenters who worked so hard to make this program possible. A special note of thanks goes out to the day leaders who made each day session rigorous and yet interesting for participants.
This document is a resource guide. Inside is information on each of our graduates and the people who were key in making Leadership Walla Walla a reality. These individuals are now linked together through a common experience and network. It is our hope that they will draw upon one another’s talents in serving and building an even bet-ter Walla Walla community.
Leadership Walla Walla has completed its twenty-fifth year with a sense of vision and accomplishment. The 2014-2015 program graduated 18 participants representing a wide range of businesses, professions and organizations.
Achievement did not come without sub-stantial sacrifice. Graduates spent in excess of 100 hours over nine months learning about how their energies might lead to the betterment of the Walla Walla community.
As graduates of Leadership Walla Walla, these dedicated citizens have had the op-portunity over the past nine months to learn about Walla Walla, its resources, its people, its values, its strengths and its weaknesses. This intense overview included a look at the business community, government, educa-tion, quality of life issues, health care, law enforcement, human services, diversity and the media.
To participants, Leadership Walla Walla became a resource exchange. Known names became known faces and a connection. Paths for new directions and revived hope for the future became a reality. Mechanisms were now identified to solve a problem, to promote a new idea, to work on an important community issue.
BACKGROUND
Who sets the direction for our commu-nity? How can we influence the quality of life available to our families? Can we improve our economy?
These questions are sometimes never asked by the average citizen. But someone works hard in a solid community to see that these questions are identified and answered. But who?
A valuable leadership pool is not easily renewed. A progressive community has the responsibility to continue to attract and en-courage leaders to participate in community activities and help in the decision-making functions tied closely to the community in which they live and raise their families.
The Walla Walla Valley Chamber of Com-merce and Walla Walla Community College studied Leadership Development programs across the nation. That study resulted in the creation of Leadership Walla Walla, a training program for community leaders.
This program of nine day-long seminars:
• identifies people in the community who have demonstrated leadership abilities,
• provides information which will develop knowledge and understanding of our community, its complexities and its potential,
• provides an opportunity for participants to meet and exchange ideas with current community leaders,
• motivates and encourages participants to assume individual leadership roles in community affairs.
Each session focuses on a particular
topic area, using keynote addresses, panel discussions and audio-visual presentations. Participants hear from representatives including but not limited to government, education, social service, and private busi-ness. One of the most significant ingredients of the sessions is the exchange of ideas in a variety of community settings, enhanc-ing the opportunity to hear and observe the many sides of each topic.
To become a participant in the Leadership Walla Walla program, an individual must demonstrate leadership potential and ability, agree that our community can be enriched by well-informed leaders, and be willing to give the time to learn. Demonstration of achievements in career and community service also enhance one’s application. Each participant and sponsoring organization is responsible for the tuition fee. (Limited partial scholarships are available.)
