HAPPY NEW YEAR and welcome back to a brand new semester here at Lehman College! I hope
you all enjoyed the holidays and have had a well-deserved rest. I am blessed to know that my
UMLP family is back, stronger than ever, and ready to continue an academic journey towards a
bright future. Before this program, I never realized I could forge such close and tight bonds with
individuals out-side of the comfort of my very own home. Then I met the wonderful people here at
the Urban Male Leadership Program, both students and staff. I want to thank my fellow UMLP
leaders for showing me what true unity is. Though many of us come from different backgrounds,
at the same time, we are working together towards common goals. I have learned a lot from all of
you and I hope we will continue to learn from each other, and support each other in our ambitions.
I wish everyone great success and the best of luck for this new semester and your future endeavors.
I would first like to say HAPPY NEW YEAR to everyone and hope that you all had an amazing
holiday season. I would also like to wish everyone a very successful Spring 2014 semester. As I
enter my last semester here at Lehman, I am honored to be an ambassador of the Urban Male Lead-
ership Program and excited to participate in all of the great events the program hosts for the Lehman
community. The UMLP has helped me greatly throughout my college career by providing me the
opportunity to meet a diverse group of people (faculty, staff, guest speakers and students) who have
guided me in a positive direction, contributing to my becoming the person I am today. Without a
doubt, the UMLP is very useful and unique in several ways. Most of all, it is a great resource that
everyone should take advantage of.

The Urban Male Leadership Program is an extended family to all its members. As a transfer student
in Fall 2013, I thought my integration into Lehman College would be difficult, but the UMLP gave
me the opportunity to blend with other students without difficulties. Even though I have been a mem
-ber for only one semester, it seems like I have been here forever. UMLP gives freshmen and trans-
fer student a sense of community and the courage to go through all the obstacles of college life.
Black History Month began in 1926 as part of an initiative by writer and educator Dr. Carter G.
Woodson who launched Negro History Week in 1926. Woodson proclaimed that Negro History
Week should always occur in the second week of February —between the birthdays of Frederick
Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. Since 1976, every American president has proclaimed February as
Black History Month. Today, other countries such as Canada and the United Kingdom also devote
an entire month to celebrating black history.
Everyone is a product of the people they surround themselves with, and I can proudly
say joining the Urban Male Leadership Program has allowed me to surround myself
with uplifting, motivated, and self-less individuals. This village of dedicated men and
women has helped me to expand my consciousness, appreciate the importance of giving
back, and step into my greatness. They have changed my life in countless ways, and I
give eternal thanks for having the opportunity to speak with them, break bread with
them, learn from them, and share life with them.

The Lehman College UMLP is changing lives one student at a time by creating new possibilities for students to experi-
ence individual growth and academic elevation. I have been a member of the program since 2011 and I've seen some
students’ academic abilities expanded through mentorship. Some are empowered to take on greater challenges, and
others have become more confident in themselves to broaden their horizon at Lehman and beyond. The UMLP has
afforded me the opportunity to engage, encourage and empower other students who I hope will one day pass on some
of the values that I've imparted to them.
This year’s Women's History Month is celebrating "Women of Character, Courage and Commitment.” At the UMLP
we are collaborating our efforts to celebrate students of the same caliber. There are some extraordinary students in the
UMLP who have displayed exemplary leadership traits. To those students I say, “Continue to set the bar high while
always striving to make a difference in your local communities and in society.” As we celebrate Women's History
Month, the UMLP and I celebrate you as well! Stay focused in your academic journey and keep the mantle burning.

It's not often that a commuter student gets involved in on-campus programs. Fortunately, I
joined the Urban Male Leadership Program during my first semester, and it has been one of
the best decisions I have made at Lehman College. The program has not only helped me
grow academically, but it has also helped me realize leadership capabilities I did not think I
possessed. With all that I have learned from the program, I recently became a UMLP student
ambassador. In this role, I am able to influence other Lehman students who have recently
joined the UMLP, as well as high school students who may one day be accepted to attend
Lehman College. The experience with the Urban Male Leadership Program continues to be
joyful and inspirational.
As a member of the Urban Male Leadership Program I am proud to see
how our student community expands each semester. As a continuing stu-
dent and UMLP Peer Mentor, I truly enjoy working with the program in
order to ensure the best college experience for all of our students. The
UMLP is a family unit that wants to see all its members succeed. The
UMLP gives us all the opportunity to be successful by providing the sup-
port and guidance needed to achieve our goals.

Throughout my years at Lehman College, the Urban Male Leadership Program has
helped guide me in my journey to graduation. My path seemed a dark corridor and like
a flashlight, the UMLP became a beam of hope that vanquished the darkness and
brightened my path. I will never let go of my flashlight because deep within my heart,
I know that without the support of the Urban Male Leader-ship Program, I would not
be here today. And with it, I will go beyond anything I could have ever dreamed of.

CUNY Office Assistant
Urban Male Leadership Program
Candidate for Masters in Public
Administration
The UMLP Circle of Support Mentorship Program links Lehman freshmen, sophomore, and transfer
students in one-on-one mentorship relationships with Lehman faculty, staff, and alumni.
Research indicates that mentors can influence their mentee’s development in several ways, including:
Enhancing the mentee’s ability to have positive relationships with their parents and their peers.
Improving cognitive skills through meaningful conversations with mentors.
Increase the likelihood of remaining in school and succeeding.
Mentorship is a critical piece to the puzzle that is higher edu-
cation. With consistent guidance of a mentor offered through
the Urban Male Leadership Program, the bumps and bruises
that come along with the journey toward achieving a Bache-
lors, Masters and/or PhD can be eased. I was blessed with
such guidance and love nothing more than participating as a
UMLP mentor and paying my knowledge forward.
As a member of the UMLP Mentorship program, I have Ms. Winters
as a mentor. Having a mentor on campus allows me to have a sense of
security when it comes to having questions answered. My mentor helps
me grow academically by suggesting study methods and ways of im-
proving my time management. Ms. Winters helps me to open up and
network even further on campus. I highly recommend getting involved
in the UMLP mentorship program and being paired with a mentor.

Joining the Urban Male Leadership Program gave me a support system for my
first semester of college, and helped make the campus seem a lot more familiar
and friendly. My UMLP brothers and sisters also gave me security. On and off
campus, I now feel as though I have people in my corner who want me to be
successful. Without a doubt, I have built a strong bond with the members of
the UMLP. I hope that all Lehman students are able to build strong bonds with
people they meet on and off campus—strong bonds are important for all of us
in helping to build personality and character.
Arriving at Lehman College as a first year freshmen I felt like a small fish in an ocean,
trying to navigate my way through the college system. I would come to class and return
home not really getting to know what Lehman had to offer. When I enrolled as a partici-
pant of the Urban Male Leadership Program, my outlook changed. I met new people,
and I became more engaged on campus. The UMLP members have become my family
outside of home.

Academic success is the cornerstone of the Urban Male Leadership Program. The Academic
Intervention and Success component of the program supports and monitors the scholastic
achievement of students who participate in the program, to help students reach their greatest
potential. Through an array of academic support services, students are given the tools to navi-
gate their college experience confidently, with the goal of completing academic requirements
and graduating on time.
Workshops and one on one strategy sessions are designed to enhance participants’ skills both
in and outside of the classroom. All students are welcome and are invited to share in the
Urban Male Leadership Program experience to reach their academic goals, develop their lead-
ership skills and strengthen their personal character.
