Qualifications, skills, knowledge and experience required of post holder Essential – A Science qualification such as A Level Chemistry or above or equivalent experience. Practical experience of the use and maintenance of technical laboratory equipment including high intensity light sources. Overview of Role and Key Objectives

Reporting to the Forensic Laboratory Team Leader you will be responsible for the processing of chemical treatments of suitable exhibits for the South West Region. This will entail the examination and chemical treatment of items to enable the recovery and recording of friction ridge detail, footwear impressions, indented writing and other pertinent forensic evidence.

Qualifications, skills, knowledge and experience required of post holder

Essential – A Science qualification such as A Level Chemistry or above or equivalent

experience. Practical experience of the use and maintenance of technical laboratory

equipment including high intensity light sources. Experience of producing accurate written information that demonstrates a high

level of attention to detail Excellent verbal and written communication skills at all levels. Be self-motivated with the ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team Ability to work under pressure with demanding workloads and deadlines. A good standard of computer literacy and a working knowledge of windows

software including Microsoft Word & Excel Knowledge of the Streamlined Forensic Reporting (SFR) protocols and

preparation of reports Practical experience of working in a scientific laboratory including knowledge of

ISO 17025 Experience of digital photography and digital image enhancement techniques. Extensive Knowledge of Health & Safety issues and COSHH regulations.

Desirable –

Successful completion of Forensic Laboratory Officer (Foundation Skills) Learning Programme or equivalent.

Successful completion of Forensic Laboratory Officer (Crime Scene Skills) learning program or equivalent.

Responsibilities –

The carrying out of laboratory examination and chemical treatment of crime scene exhibits for the purpose of visualising, recovering, photographing and recording forensic evidence.

Clean room controlled DNA swabbing of forensic exhibits Use of Para/Rapid DNA sampling technology The preparation and submission of reports and statements required for court,

management and other operational purposes. The attendance at court to present evidence when required. The maintenance of technical equipment, chemicals and other consumables

used in treatments and processes. The attendance at crime scenes to carry out examinations and chemical

treatment and other locations as directed to provide specialist assistance. The use of computerised case management and regional force systems for

operational purposes. The provision of specialist technical advice when required. Efficient administration of the Forensic Laboratory (Fingerprints) and

management of its resources to meet operational requirements. To keep abreast of new developments and best practice in the forensic field,

along with Health and Safety updates. To actively engage with all ISO quality processes and procedures and contribute

to the continuous development of themselves and their working environment. The planning and carrying out of laboratory staff training in conjunction with the

Forensic Training Officer. The carrying out of laboratory staff competency assessments in conjunction with

the Forensic Training Officer. The preparation of formal written laboratory technical procedures. The planning and carrying out of test method validation and verification studies. The setting up and calibration of laboratory equipment.
