time to shine Leadership honors programThe Leadership Honors program is a personal leadership

development program that emphasizes four core areas:

leadership knowledge, self-awareness, leadership practice,

and global perspective. The program ensures that students

have a comprehensive leadership experience that prepares

them to be ethical, global-minded leaders.

Benefits include working with a peer advisor to develop

an individualized leadership plan, access to leadership

skills, training and activities with other honors program

members, attendance at student conferences, and serving

as an ambassador for the Leadership Center. When

all requirements are complete, students graduate with

leadership honors regalia.

Certified Leaders instituteReceive your certificate in leadership after completing a

series of workshops exploring topics from fundamental

leadership skills to advanced critical social analysis of

leadership. Workshops for the Certified Leaders Institute

will be offered in the fall and spring semesters. This

program is open to both undergraduate and graduate

students.

faLL Leadership retreatTake the next step in your leadership development and

become a student leader at the annual fall retreat. This

retreat is a University tradition that has shaped and

molded student leaders for more than 30 years. Students

are exposed to a variety of seminar-based leadership topics

including ethical leadership, empowerment of others,

diversity, global leadership, and effective communication.

During the retreat, peer student leaders model

outstanding leadership and encourage it from all

participants while facilitating small team-building

activities, building strong communication and group

facilitation skills, greeting and hosting community leaders/

alumni attending the retreat, and ensuring that retreat

participants are actively engaged.

uta toastmastersBuild confidence as a communicator. UTA Toastmasters is

a student organization dedicated to increasing confidence

through public speaking. UTA Toastmasters meetings are

held weekly year round on campus.

Leadership ConsortiumThe UT Arlington Leadership Consortium is a collective

group of organizations dedicated to the pursuit of leadership

development and growth for UT Arlington’s student body.

omiCron deLta KappaOmicron Delta Kappa is a national leadership honor society

that recognizes achievement in five areas: scholarship,

athletics, community service/campus involvement,

journalism/speech, and the creative and performing arts.

The Fall Leadership Retreat has been training

student leaders for more than 30 years.

programming. We’ve got several options for students interested in

make an impact uta VoLunteersUTA Volunteers is the student group that plans and

implements volunteer and community service programs

for UT Arlington and the surrounding community. The

purpose of the group is to promote active citizenship

and strengthen the community by creating avenues for

community service involvement and providing tools

and resources to the UT Arlington community.

soCiaL JustiCe LeagueThe UT Arlington Social Justice League is a

collaborative effort between organizations with a

commitment to volunteerism. The Social Justice

League focuses on sharing information and new ideas

on volunteering in our community. Students, faculty,

and staff are invited to participate. For a complete list of

faCuLty and staff Leadership CoaChingUT Arlington commits to the core value of personal

development by providing a welcoming and stimulating

center for student life filled with resources and

helpful staff members who promote growth and

self-development. Leadership coaches are just one way

the University can help provide resources to students in

developing their leadership growth.

Leadership coaches are faculty and staff that have a

passion for leadership and student development. Coach

roles vary from facilitators or presenters on a broad range

of leadership topics to student leader mentors, scholarship

committee members, and resources for students and

student organizations.

When you give back to the community, you not only gain new

friends, experiences, and skills, you begin to understand what it

means to instigate positive change that contributes immeasurably to

the greater good. The Leadership Center can help you find a place

where your efforts are best suited to making great things happen.

Feed your amBition AcAdemic Offerings

Leadership studies minor and CertifiCateThe leadership studies minor program at UT Arlington

will prepare students to be relational, ethical, and global

leaders armed with the knowledge and skills to make a

positive contribution in the workplace, the communities

in which they live and throughout the world. The courses

are designed to help students explore the dimensions of

leadership so that they may engage in leadership that is

constructive, purposeful, and orientated toward improving

the human condition. The leadership studies minor is a

joint initiative between the Department of Educational

Leadership and the Leadership Center in the Division of

Student Affairs.

edad 1130: foundations of Leadership This interactive, 1-hour course is designed to provide

a broad overview of fundamental leadership concepts.

Students will learn about themselves and others as they

explore a broad range of topics including leadership styles,

negotiating conflict, effective communication, and ethics.

Through this course students will develop a basic vocabulary

about leadership and will have a better sense of their own

approaches to leadership.

edad 2330: adVanCed theories in Leadership This 3-hour course is designed to be an interactive theory-

based seminar in which students explore themselves, their

relationship to others, and the issues confronting our society

in the context of leadership-related principles. Registrants

of this course, along with the instructors, function as a

community of learners and work together to craft and share

knowledge about leadership. This course is part of the

leadership studies minor program.

edad 4330: Capstone in Leadership studiesThe capstone course focuses on the synthesis of learning

and experiences across the prior 15 hours of coursework.

Students will design and present their new understandings

of leadership and speculate about futures on the horizon.

This course is part of the leadership studies minor program.

The EDAD 2330 Advanced Theories of Leadership course saw a 122% increase in enrollment between the fall 2011 and spring 2012 semesters.

The Leadership Center offers many ways for you to learn about

leadership in an experiential learning environment. Throughout

the year, the center also provides ongoing workshops and lectures

dedicated to leadership development. Learn what it takes to be a

great leader and be amazed at what you can accomplish.

leaders and is always happy to recognize

greatness. We do that in lots of ways.

Co-CurriCuLar transCriptThe co-curricular transcript is an official university document that lists co-

curricular and community involvement activities undertaken while at

UT Arlington and is verified by the Leadership Center staff, organizational

advisors, and other approved staff. The co-curricular transcript can be used

as a supplement to a resume, scholarship applications, and graduate school

applications. Studies have shown that employers are looking for employees who

have “practical competency” or the ability to work with others on campus and in

community organizations, and on projects in the workplace. To get started and

Leadership reCognition CeremonyThe Leadership Recognition Ceremony is an annual celebration of leadership

at UT Arlington. It is an opportunity to honor the outstanding student leaders,

organizations, and advisors in our community. The outstanding student leader

awards include scholarship funds of varying amounts. The ceremony takes places

in April and all students, their families, faculty, and staff are welcome to attend.

Corporate and community partners can get involved with the Leadership Center

through student mentorship, shadowing opportunities, guest lecturing, and by

graduate assistant for the Leadership CenterGraduate assistants are valuable members of the

Leadership Center. The graduate assistant is responsible

for developing programs and serving as a resource to the

entire student population. This individual will have the

opportunity to serve on committees, formally present

within an academic course setting, attend personal and

professional development activities, and assist with collateral

assignments. Ideal candidates will want to gain experience

for their future in Student Affairs.

enhanCed graduate teaChing assistantship program: phd in K-16 eduCationaL Leadership and poLiCy studies

The Department of Educational Leadership and Policy

Studies and the Leadership Center offer an Enhanced

Graduate Teaching Assistantship to qualified incoming

doctoral students. The program blends K-12 and higher

educational leadership issues, theory, and solutions.
