MUSICAL UPDATE

The school musical Grease has shown much development in just two terms. We have learnt many songs and started practicing on stage. The cast of The Cabaret Festival Roadshow, who were in Whyalla not long ago, have helped the musical cast to become more confident on and off stage with what we are doing. So far, we have learnt most of the songs including popular songs from the musical such as We Go Together, Grease Lightning and Summer Nights. We are progressing at a fast and comfortable rate and are sure to have the full production ready to perform in November. The cast worked hard in their last rehearsal of the term and are now eagerly waiting for the holiday rehearsals.

YEAR 8/9 GIRLS FOOTBALL

On the June 11, the 8/9 girls football team travelled to Port Augusta to play Port Augusta Secondary School and Mid North Secondary Education College (MNSEC). The team was coached by Mr Fargher, managed by Mrs Percy, umpired by Ethan Lowry with Tayla Hart-Aluni and Samantha Looyestyn named as captain and vice-captain.

In the first game we faced off against Port Augusta. The Whyalla High team were initially nervous going into the game because majority of the team hadn’t played before and the Port Augusta girls looked confident and well prepared. Once the game got underway, the Whyalla High girls were able to use their speed and teamwork to run the Pt Augusta side off their feet. The final score was Whyalla 6. 7. 43 to Port Augusta 3. 2. 20.

Sarah Simmonds & Tayla Hart-Aluni were fantastic in winning the ball out of the middle and delivering it to their teammates. Talia Hines was dangerous up forward, kicking two goals and setting up many others. Hannah Ewbank and Kasey Pettiford also played well providing plenty of run coming out of defence.

The second game we played against MNSEC. Though MNSEC were not as competitive on the scoreboard, this was a physically demanding game with a number of our players pulling up sore afterwards. The Whyalla High girls once again proved too quick across the ground and held the opposition scoreless for the game. The final score was Whyalla 6. 2. 38 to MNSEC 0. 0. 0.

The team was once again expertly lead by Tayla Hart-Aluni who was easily the leading possession getter. Shaylee O’Breeza ran amuck across half forward, slotting two goals. Sarah Simmonds went from a midfield role to ruck which proved pivotal in winning the clearances. Shaniah Kingi was rock solid in defence repelling many opposition attacks. Renee Copley also played well running rings around the MNSEC defenders, setting up goals at will.

The goal scorers throughout the two games were: Shaylee O’Breeza (4), Talia Hines (3),

Sarah Simmonds (3), Tayla Hart-Aluni (1) and Kasey Pettiford (1).

The Whyalla High school team is now advancing to the semi finals which will be a round robin tournament against Marymount College and Brighton Secondary College. These games will be played in Week 2, Term 3 in Adelaide. The girls are all very excited for the semifinals and are looking to further our run in the competition.

Mr David Fargher8/9 Girls Football Coach

STAGE BANDOn the night of Saturday June 20, the Whyalla Schools Stage Band performed at the Mayoral gala at the Middleback Theatre.Currently there are 13 Whyalla High students involved in the band, rehearsing every Tuesday after school and this was our second perormance under the direction of Mr Yamamoto. It was a smaller ensemble than usual due to sporting commitments but was well received by the audience and it was great to see many parents there. Well done to the students involved.Jacob Staehr

YEAR 10 KNOCKOUT VOLLEYBALLOn Friday May 29 selected year 10 students represented Whyalla High School in the knockout volleyball tournament held at Stuart High School.

The male team consisted of Joshua Pengelley, Aaron Rogers, Jordan Henderson-Ewings, Rian Smoker, Sam Taylor and Joseph Abdulla. The boys worked really well together to win both games against Stuart High School and Samar-itan College, but unfortunately lost the last set against Port Lincoln High School by only 4 points.

The female team consisted of Olivia Watson-Dup-ille, Tammy Radford, Danielle Coulson, Paige Walden-Johnstone, Aimee Clemens, Jessica Van Der Tuuk and Visnja Kingi. The girls played excel-lently on the day, playing to their strengths to win all 3 games and be named Regional Champions.

YEAR 10 PRODUCTION OF STAR STRUCKThe year 10 drama class recently put on a pro-duction of Star Struck, an Australian play writ-ten by Belinda Bradley. Star Struck is about a group of students waiting to audition for the school musical. The variety of characters and the thoughts and interactions that they have created an instant attraction for the year 10’s who chose to perform it

The students worked really hard through weeks of rehearsals and character study leading up to the final performance. Their hard work was evident as the performance was humorous, heart-felt and entertaining. All students were convincing in their roles providing the audience with laughs and enjoyment. They excelled in their performance and were proud of their ef-forts receiving outstanding feedback from both staff and students.

10E SCIENCEThis term in science, 10E has started to touch on activities based around STEM. STEM is an acronym standing for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. This program is benefitical for students as it teaches them to be creative and allows them to explore other subjects in more depth. Practicals we have done for STEM include the ‘Tinkle Testing Charts’ and ‘Fireproof Paper’. Since 10E began studying STEM 95% of students have been actively participating in the practical’s. We have found that since participating in STEM the practical’s have been far more enjoyable.Nikki Evans & Kiara Rabig
