AEDC participates in Iowa State University career fairs

Based on conversations with companies throughout the community, the Ames Economic Development Commission (AEDC) has found workforce avail-ability is a consistent issue and opportunity which needs to be addressed in the region. In response to this need, the AEDC’s Workforce Development

Initiative works to promote our area by attracting and retaining qualified workers. In an effort to recruit Iowa State University (ISU) students to stay in the Ames/

Story County area, the AEDC will participate in several ISU Career Fairs this Feb-ruary with the goal of encouraging students to intern at local organizations as well as consider staying in the Ames/Story County area after graduation. Our local job board, www.WorkInAmes.com is an excellent tool for students to find both intern-ships and employment. Also, the AEDC’s “See Yourself in Ames” intern events offer students across Story County the chance to network with business leaders and learn more about the community.

Many students don’t realize the opportunities that are available to them to intern and/or begin their professional careers here in our area. By being present at ISU’s Career Fairs the AEDC increases awareness. The end result will be more students and graduates gaining valuable work experience and more local businesses finding skilled employees and interns.

Work In Ames site helps employeers, job seekers

The next time your business has a job or internship opening, be sure to take advantage of the Ames Economic Development Commission’s local job board website, www.WorkInAmes.com.

Organizations can post jobs and internships at no cost, while job seek-ers have a resource to search for great work opportunities in the Ames/Story County area!

If you have any questions regarding the website, please contact Angela Davidson at [email protected] or 515-232-2310.

New YPA Program connecting Ames’ young professionals with area business and non-profit leaders

As part of the Young Professionals of Ames board’s efforts to ramp up profes-sional development, a new program was put into play in November of 2014 con-necting YPA members with area CEOs. This CEO Breakfast program provides an excellent opportunity for early and mid-career professionals to spend time discussing leadership and management philosophies, learn about how the CEOs have shaped their careers to achieve the level of success they have, and spend time talking about the ins and outs of each individuals daily activities running organizations both large and small in Ames.

The program developed as the brain child of the Leadership and Profession-al Development committee, chaired by Andrea Hammes-Dodge in 2013. When asked what provided the spark to get the program going, Hammes-Dodge said, “I have a hard time getting out of the office to attend lunch events, so I wanted to explore program options for differ-ent times of the day. At the same time, I remembered that [former Iowa State University] President [Martin] Jischke once participated in Executive Round-tables in Des Moines that provided busi-ness leaders an opportunity for network-ing and learning from one another.”

Hammes-Dodge’s recollection of those very informative and effective events got her thinking about how that program could be adapted for Young Professionals of Ames. “Through my job [as Senior Development Coordinator at Mary Greeley Medical Center] I am fortunate to have access to many local CEOs and community leaders but know many YPs do not have those opportu-nities.” Because of her own personal interest in learning from other leaders she knew that others would be too. She pitched the idea to Brian Dieter, CEO

of Mary Greeley Medical Center, who immediately agreed to kick off the pro-gram and hosted the first CEO Breakfast in November at MGMC.

The breakfasts are limited to ten YPA members and have so far proven to be extremely effective. During the break-fast hosted at MGMC, Dieter focused on how he approaches managing a large organization with many moving parts and how he has learned to be an effec-tive manager, thanks in large part to some great mentors he’s had over the years. The second CEO breakfast in December featured Jean Kresse, CEO of United Way of Story County. Kresse shared key insights for building a fund-raising campaign for non-profit organi-zations, cultivating strong relationships, and the importance of presenting the most effective and respectful ‘ask’ per donor’s interests. Both sessions received rave reviews and the program looks to become a staple of YPAs professional development offerings.

Future Young Professionals of Ames CEO Breakfasts will feature Charles Avery, Plant Manager at 3M in Ames and Roger Neuhaus, President and CEO of the Iowa State University Foundation.

Why YPs Love Ames In honor of everyone’s favorite

February holiday, Valentine’s Day, Ames young professionals were asked on Facebook to answer the question “What do you love about Ames?” Answers included:

I love visiting the Downtown Main Street Cultural District, working at Iowa State University, and attending Iowa State Athletics with my family. Ames is a great community!!

There is always something to do! From campus activities, athletics, arts and cultural pursuits - the list is end-less! I also love that we live in a caring community where people are genuinely interested to learn about and from one another.

I love so many things about Ames -- its friendly people and neighborhoods, great school systems and opportunities for young professionals and families. I love my job at Mary Greeley Medical Center and am thankful we have such high quality healthcare available in our community.

The residents are caring, hard-working and passionate; the neighbor-hoods are nice and well-maintained; and (of course) I love ISU!

I love that there are trails and parks all across the city. There’s never a shortage of places to explore!

I love that I can drive across town in 15 minutes! I can do almost any errand over a lunch break!

I love that the community rallies behind the University and the Univer-sity rallies behind the community.

Upcoming YPA Activities: YPA THAW. Join us for our Febru-ary Thursday after Work to network and socialize with fellow young pro-fessionals. Date and location to be determined.
