Back home from Japan: Jenna Casaus

Learning about other cultures is importantBy Jenna Casaus, Bernalillo County States’ 4-H International Exchange Program 4-week delegate

Japan is an incredible country, and I was so fortunate to be able to spend a month there this summer as a States’ 4-H International Exchange delegate. First, arriving in Tokyo was very difficult for me. I didn’t know any Japanese, and the culture is drastically different. I caught on quickly though, and I enjoyed my stay very much.

I attended school for two weeks with my host sister, and made some really great friends. The teachers were all very nice to me and welcomed me into their classes. I learned many Japanese words and phrases at school from the teachers and my friends.

My host family was wonderful. One weekend they took me camping by Mt. Fuji. It was so beautiful. One of my favorite memories from Japan is when I went to karaoke one afternoon during a weekend with my family. My family got our own private karaoke room, and we sat around the table singing songs (both Japanese and English) and eating snacks. I never enjoyed singing by myself in front of other people, but Japanese karaoke made me feel comfortable and I had so much fun. I got very close to my host family, especially my mom and my sister. My host sister speaks fluent English, but my host mom speaks only a little. It was so interesting how I could communicate so well with my host mother without speaking the same language as her. We spent enough time with each other that language was not important. I didn’t understand the words she said to me, but I always

Japan 8 week exchange:A way to broaden your horizonBy Bella Lucero, Bernalillo County States’ 4-H International Exchange Program 8-week delegate

Japan is an amazing country, with beautiful sights, and spectacular people. Everyone in Japan is so polite and traditional, they are very kind and considerate and everyone made me feel so warm and welcome. I made so many lifelong friends as well as new, extended family. The food was also phenomenal, and this coming from someone who used to be an extremely picky eater. Some of my favorite food included tempura, soba (a Japanese noodle), and of course sushi!

My host families were so amazing! I got to experience living with just one sibling, younger, which was new for me! My first host family lived near Tokyo and I got to travel to and from language class each day on the train by myself! My second host family was very different because we lived in a rural area near the ocean. It was breathtaking and very different from the city. It was great because I was able to experience both the city and

rural areas. My second host family was also great because I had a sister who was my age, as well as two awesome younger siblings.

I love anime and manga, which was also a big reason for my desire to go to Japan. I was able to visit many animation stores and even the Ghibli museum! It was like living my wildest dreams, in all aspects! Overall, Japan

was amazing beyond anything I could have ever imagined! I made memories and friends that have changed my life, and I know I have grown as an individ-ual. I would recommend this exchange to my fellow 4-H’ers in a heartbeat! It was the perfect way to end my last year in 4-H, and I believe that it is a great way to experience another culture and broaden your horizon.

4-H National Youth Science Day (NYSD)4-HNationalYouth Science Day

by Peter Skelton, PhD Associate Professor and Director Memorial Middle School Ag Extension & Ed Center 4-H Youth Development Program

4-H National Youth Science Day (NYSD) is the premiere national rallying event for year-round 4-H Science programming, bringing together youth, volunteers and educators from the nation’s 111 land-grant colleges and universities, and the Cooperative Extension System to simultaneously complete the National Science Experiment. This annual event seeks to spark an early youth interest in science and future science careers. National Youth Science Day presents a great opportunity to engage youth in hands-on science, engineering and technology activities while developing critical thinking skills.

-

-

This year’s NYSD experiment, happening October 7th, is Motion Commotion. The 2015 National Youth Science Day Experiment, Motion

Commotion, empowers youth to explore the physics of motion and distracted driving. Developed by Oregon State University Cooperative Extension, this exciting activity will combine a speeding car collision and a distracted driving demonstration in a simulated activity that investigates the physical and human factors of motion. The two-part experiment will test young people’s knowledge of science, speed, and safety by:• Constructing a simulated runway

to analyze the speed, momentum and kinetic energy of a car in motion, and will explore the science behind the car’s collisions

• Leading an experiment that uses the same physics principles to demonstrate the consequences of distracted driving.

This is a great opportunity to interact with youth through an inquiry-based learning environment and to demonstrate that science is fun. 4-H National Youth Science Day kits are available for $23.95 at the National 4-H Website (www.4-hmall.org/Product/educationalkits/2015-national-youth-science-day-kit-pre-order/NYSD7.aspx). Be sure to register your event on the 4-H National Website (www.4-h.org/4-h-national-youth-science-day/registration).

Come to 4-H Adult Forum for new ideas, stronger friendships, and enthusiasmBy Melissa Woodall Vice President NM 4-H Leaders’ Association

When I first heard about the 4-H Adult Forum, I thought, “that couldn’t be for me!” I just helped out at club meetings now and then. And, how could I afford it, and take the time away from the kids? I was told it was for leaders and parents of 4-H members, and that I could apply for a scholarship that would pay for it, but I still wasn’t convinced that I could leave the kids for the day. It took me three years to be convinced, and I wish I had gone the first year! What a great experience! I learned so much! I chose to go to workshops about

insurance, leadership, hippology, and crafts. Since then, I’ve led the leadership project and organized our hippology project. I learned about aspects of insurance that I’d never thought of. I learned a little bit about a few other projects during the make and take activity, and brought home new ideas for community service. I was energized by the guest speaker, felt appreciated by the agents, and talked to other leaders from all over the state about how they do things in their counties. I got a lot of good ideas from them, and I felt like I could bring good ideas home and implement them. Every year I’ve gone back, and I come home with new ideas, stronger friendships, and enthusiasm

-

about the upcoming 4-H year. Our upcoming Forum will be on

Saturday, November 14th, and I’d like to encourage you to attend. We have excellent presenters, make and take activities and a community service project. Our motivational speaker, Chris Natzke, will teach you about creating a purposeful vision, consciously persisting through obstacles, and compassionately serving others. We have time built in for fun activities, social time, a silent auction, and we always have fun door prizes. A scholarship could pay for your registration fee, and you can car-pool to save gas! You will not regret the decision to join us and “Grow With the Green”!

knew what she meant. Leaving Japan and my host

family was very difficult. I still miss them, but I know that I will always be a part of their family and they will always be a part of mine. I had an amazing time on my exchange. Going to another country is a little scary, but it is always worth it. I would encourage everyone to go on an exchange if they can. Learning about the world and other cultures is so important. This exchange taught me how to be more open-minded, understanding, and has deepened my love for experiencing the world. I can’t wait to travel more.

There are also several articles in this addition of the Leaderline. I hope you will make this the biggest and best Forum ever. This program is my energizer. I enjoy visiting about all the neat things you are doing in your club programs. The enthusiasm is contagious and if you are a new leader, this is the place to get ideas. I would like to see our attendance grow to 125. As a matter of fact, I challenge each of you that attended last year’s Forum to bring one new leader or parent with you!

4-H Alumni: John Garlisch

Perspective on ‘Being an Advisor’By John Garlisch Bernalillo County Dip and Dor Advisor 2012-2015

“Thrilling yet Challenging; Tiring, yet invigorating... all in all a positive life and growth experience,” that is how I would describe my three years serving as the Dip - Dor advisor. The youth serving as ambassadors and diplomats are driven and tenacious individuals who are looking to be challenged and looking to grow. This ambition fueled myself to challenge my perspective and meet their tenacity for learning and growing as an individual.

-

I will be the first to admit that keeping up with them takes a LOT of energy and can be tiring. Is it worth it? YES! To see the transfor-mation of our youth; to push them out of their comfort zone; to mold them into leaders; and to personally witness that ‘A-ha’ moment in their own self-realization. Those are the reasons to serve as a state advisor

and influence my own personal growth.

We as agents see the day-to-day of our local youth, and a small group of our youth see their impacts beyond their city and county. How do we foster the larger vision and global impact for our youth? Serving as advisor to our state teams is one such opportunity for that. We, the advisors, enable our youth to navigate and learn different perspectives in a larger society. It is witnessing the personal growth of our youth in these situations that is invaluable. In turn, we as advisors, grow with them.

Not all experiences will be positive, but they are all real-world learning experiences. Many of the opportunities and experiences are

challenging, and in return, those opportunities are priceless. I would challenge all of us to serve as advisor for a few years with our state delega-tions. In the end, you will leave an impact legacy on our youth, and they will leave an impact legacy of learning in you.

collaborating effectively with individ-uals who are very different than me or have very different interests than I do,” Kaly Cone from Roosevelt County, said. Cone was elected as the 4-H state reporter. Daughter of Mike and Karen Cone, Kaly has received grand champion honors with her steers, beef heifers and dairy heifers as well as a number of showmanship awards. She has also competed in wildlife, dairy and livestock judging, livestock skill-a-thon, favorite foods, prepared public speaking, and poetry,

winning top honors either individually or as a team. “4-H has provided me with many skills and qualities that I will need to be a successful adult.”

Joshua Knight, 18, from Bernalillo County, son of Josh and Jennifer Knight, was elected as the 4-H state parliamentarian. Josh is very involved in the shooting sports projects and has placed high in various competitions entered. He is also enrolled in the beef, lamb, goat, and leadership projects. “4-H is a program that helps young people grow and develop themselves into great leaders while helping them develop skills they can use later in life to further themselves in their career

paths” said Knight.“I want to inspire and enable other

4-H members to become leaders in their own clubs, counties, and state,” says Katelin Spradley, newly elected state song and recreation leader from San Juan County. Daughter of Craig and Casey Spradley, Katelin is currently enrolled in the beef, lamb, public speaking and leader-ship projects. She has received many awards in livestock judging and livestock skillathon contests as well as the overall agriculture record book award, and first place in prepared and impromptu public speaking at the county level.
