EMT Lead Instructor Application 2017-2018 Illini Emergency Medical Services (IEMS) is searching for an outstanding and reliable candidate to fill the EMT Lead Instructor position for the 2017-2018 academic year. IEMS EMT courses typically graduate around 18-24 students in the fall semester. For the current and previous spring semesters, we are teaching and have graduated 44-48 students. EMT Lead Instructor Application2017-2018

Illini Emergency Medical Services (IEMS) is searching for an outstanding and reliable candidate to fill the EMT Lead Instructor position for the 2017-2018 academic year. IEMS EMT courses typically graduate around 18-24 students in the fall semester. For the current and previous spring semesters, we are teaching and have graduated 44-48 students. The key responsibilities of the IEMS EMT Instructor are to teach the EMT course lectures or find suitable guest lecturers in his or her place, to ensure that the students understand the material, and to process all of the legal paperwork pertaining to the EMT Certification.

The Lead Instructor will receive financial compensation for time spent teaching and preparing for each class. This amount will be determined based on the applicant’s experience as well as the number of applicants.

A detailed description of qualifications, expectations and rights of the EMT Lead Instructor are outlined below. Both parties must agree to the specifications and initial each section upon acceptance as the Lead EMT Instructor.

The application is due no later than Sunday, February 19th, 2017 at 11:59 PM submitted to [email protected]. Interviews will be scheduled immediately after application submission if selected. If chosen, you will receive further information regarding the location, time, and details of the interview. It is encouraged that you apply as soon as possible.

The Lead Instructor will be appointed by a majority Executive board vote following instructor interviews. Decisions will be made after all interviews are held. Instructor and officer training will begin immediately after acceptance.

QUALIFICATIONS

1) All applicants must hold a current and valid American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers certification.

2) All applicants must hold a current and valid State of Illinois EMT-Basic, EMT-Intermediate, or EMT-Paramedic license.

3) All applicants must hold an American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) instructor certification prior to applying for the Lead Instructor Position, or with approval from the executive board.

4) All applicants must be approved as an instructor by Presence Regional EMS System (PREMSS) and it is highly encouraged for the applicant to obtain an EMS-Instructor certificate after acceptance.

EXPECTATIONS

If chosen as the EMT Lead Instructor, you will represent IEMS as a leader within the Education department. The expectations and main responsibilities of the EMT Lead Instructor are as follows:

1) Accountable for all aspects of the EMT course.2) The Lead Instructor must communicate and meet with the EMS Education Coordinator at

PREMSS to ensure correct preparation for teaching the EMT course to the current national standards and guidelines.

3) The Lead Instructor must be hired through IFSI, which involves a background check.4) The Lead Instructor is highly encouraged to become certified as an EMS Instructor in

addition to a BLS Instructor.5) The Lead Instructor is responsible for filing national and state paperwork.6) As an officer within IEMS, the Lead Instructor is expected to attend the budget meeting

with the Director of Accounting and adhere to the budget created for the EMT class throughout their term as Lead Instructor.

7) The Lead Instructor will coordinate and communicate with the EMT Class and Practical Coordinators to accomplish goals for the EMT course.

8) The Lead Instructor must attend each EMT class and practicals regularly with a minimum of 80% of both lectures and practicals, unless special circumstances preclude attendance such as major exams, illness or family emergency. If absent the Lead Instructor must provide reasonable warning to the EMT Class and Practical Coordinators. The EMT Class and Practical Coordinators are also expected to provide such prior notice of their absence.

9) Notify the Director of Education and the IEMS Executive Board of any changes in the EMT course administration and obtain approval with a majority Executive Board vote.

10) Ensure the EMT students learn the necessary material and promote retention of the EMT students within IEMS through creating an exciting environment beyond the course.

11) Hold 2 office hours per week in the IEMS office or upon approval, a set number as dictated by the Director of Public Relations and be available by appointment for the remaining hours.

12) Organize and administer weekly meetings of the EMT Department to discuss the progress of the class and coordinate with the Class and Practical Coordinators regarding pertinent aspects of the course. The Lead Instructor should also relay these discussions to the Director of Education.

13) Administer disciplinary action to students of the EMT course per the protocols of the EMT course application.

14) The Lead Instructor is expected to prepare for each lecture in advance of teaching the lecture. This includes reading through the chapter from the EMT course book and slides. It is expected of the Lead Instructor to make additions to the slides and highly recommended for the Lead Instructor to create their own slides for each lecture.

APPENDIX

Responsibilities of the EMT Class Coordinator:1. Collaborate with the EMT Lead Instructor for regular class materials and updates on each

student. 2. Attend all classes and practicals, unless there are extenuating circumstances, and assist

with any equipment demonstrations, lectures, etc.3. Compose or revise quizzes for each class as necessary.4. Keep track of student attendance and grades, ensuring that each student is maintaining

above an 80% in the class.5. Provide students with timely reviews of their progress.6. Ensure that each student completes their required events.7. Provide exam conflict forms to students as needed.

Responsibilities of the EMT Practical Coordinator:1. Collaborate with the EMT Lead Instructor for regular class materials and updates on each

student. 2. Attend all classes and practicals, unless there are extenuating circumstances, and assist

with any equipment demonstrations, lectures, etc.3. Organize all EMT practicals with the EMT Lead Instructor.4. Plan need for equipment for practicals and course demonstrations.5. Provide students with timely feedback on practical performance.6. Coordinate with other members of the EMT department to schedule additional equipment

practice and skills review.7. Help the Records Officer track continuing education hours for EMTs who volunteer at

practicals.

EMT Lead Instructor Time Commitment

1. The Lead Instructor position is a significant time commitment to IEMS. The Lead Instructor must attend at least 80% of all classes and practicals. The class schedule will be determined based on the instructor’s and coordinators’ availability but have typically been held Mondays and Wednesdays in the fall, with an additional Tuesday and Thursday class section in the spring, both from 7-10 PM. The Spring 2016 class schedules are included in the appendix for an example.

2. The Lead Instructor must find guest lecturers to give each lecture or can give the lectures him/herself, so adequate preparation and time is essential. It is expected of the Lead Instructor to go through the material from the book thoroughly as well as add their own knowledge from their EMS experience to be able to equip with the students with the correct protocols.

3. Furthermore, the Lead Instructor should be available frequently by phone or email to communicate with students, the EMT Class and Practical Coordinators, and the Director of Education, in addition to staffing two office hours per week in the IEMS office.
