1. Intended ways of using your multimedia player Firstly, you should decide on where you want to use your multimedia player. The individual requirements of an individual person will considerably influence the purchasing decision. If it will be used only as a storage device for photos, a type with the corre-sponding memory capacity would be enough for that. If you want to access your data when traveling, the quality of the display is important. If the multimedia player will mostly be used as a jukebox when you are on the way, you should add great emphasis on the sound effects. At all times the user should pay attention to the durability of the batteries in order that the entertainment pleasure will not be interrupted right in the middle. 2. Memory Until now there were only two ways to classify multimedia players: precisely, according to their storage technology. The first category consists of flash-memory based players, which established themselves as standard. 3. Display A sufficiently large display and a resolution that is best possible are important to avoid that the video-fun becomes lessened. Nevertheless should a 2.5” display be the lower limit. With an approximately 6.4 cm diagonal, that is equivalent to an edge length of approx. 5.4 cm times 4 cm. Smaller displays are mainly fit for replaying short music videos or clips, e. g. from youtube. As a general rule: the larger the display, the better. But that principle also has a downside. A larger display needs a larger case, which makes the player unhandy and often heavier. Further, those screens need a lot of, always scarce, power. In conse-quence: the larger the display, (in general) the shorter the battery’s running time. Often LCD-displays or TFT-displays are being used. Some manufacturers are already betting on OLED (Organic Light Emitting Devices). Here organic components are used for the displays which emit light as soon as you apply electronic tension. These displays require considerably less energy, they are bright illuminated, they offer a higher contrast, a wider viewing angle and react considerably more rapidly than LCDs. But they are still relatively expensive and have a short life expectancy.

4. Seize and weight Mobile, handy, light-weighted – multimedia players should fulfill these properties. The smaller and more light-weighted they are, the easier you can take it with you without any hassles. In the meantime there are MP4-players, which just weight 100 grams. These light-weighted devices can be easily stored in your pocket and they are a pleasant companion when you are travelling. As for card-supporting devices, cards can be easily transported to another device like, e.g. a hi-fi system or radio. Moreover, some players are able to connect to a PC via Firewire or Bluetooth. The system software should recognize the player automatically and list it as further removable media. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. To enable data transfer, some players require special software that first has to be installed and further to be used all the way. This way it is impossible to connect to a friend’s PC for a quick data transfer. The software or the files-manager allows easy synchronizing of music. If you wish to connect your player to a hi-fi system, the device needs to feature a line-out interface. If a hi-fi system accepts digital input, the user should make sure that the player is able to do so. The transferred music will sound clearer. MP4 players are also TV-connectable.

6. Operating time of the batteries Large back-light lit displays need a lot of power. It is for that reason that enduring batteries are a must for everyone who wants to be free from the socket to watch a film on the way. A player should be able to run at least 3 hours in non-stop operation. Naturally, bigger power reserves would be better. So, users should chose devices with a strong autonomy or exchangeable batteries. 7. Image- and video formats There are countless formats for pictures and videos on the market. The more a player is able to recognize, the better. Basically, a player should be able to read JEPG formats for pictures, MP3 and WMA for music and the preferred video-format – all to meet users’ requirements. Because: too many formats could be confusing and make controls more complicate.

spread. MP3 Motion Pictures Experts Group Layer 3, supported by almost all models. MP3Pro Latest creation of Thomson/RCA. Sounds better than MP3 with the same bit-rate. Not very widespread. OGG Ogg Vorbis, open-source format. Not as widespread as ACC, MP3 or WMA. WAV/AIFF Uncompressed format like in a standard CD. Need 10 to 12 times more memory than the MP3 format.

Windows processors use WAV, Macs AIFF files. ASF Advanced Streaming Format from Microsoft. That format does not determine the way in which Video

and Audio are encoded but only the structure of the Video/Audio stream. That means that ASF-files can be encoded with almost any codec and still be considered as ASF-files. This is comparable to Quick Time, MP4 or Ogg format.

MPEG Moving Picture Experts Group. A group of experts working on the standardization of videocompression and appertaining sectors like audio-data compression or container-formats. Commonly “MPEG” is not used to describe the experts group but a precise MPEG-standard.

The video resolution is important for the replay on a TV. Almost no device works with the common PAL resolution (720 times 576 pixels) for TV sets. Most of them are only offering one quarter, some are offering even less. This way, the image needs to be interpolated for the TV which is –however- working quite well cutting down on PAL resolution. This means that the videos will have a little less quality compared to the television program. Therefore, the users should make sure that the players are offering 360 * 288 pixels, if possible. 320 times 240 pixels are barely acceptable, but you should not fall below this value for replay on a TV

The most common helpful functions in multimedia players are the FM radio receiver and the dictaphone. Even when in a hurry, one can listen to the news, thanks to the integrated radio receiver.
