The undergraduate transfer experience at the Shady Grove campus of the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business is unique. Diversity is common. Many students have part-time jobs and are a few years older. Some are proud first-generation college students. Others have families. All are smart, eager to learn from one another and dedicated to achieving a successful business career.

Three Smart Options. Four Semesters. Every fall semester, admitted students enroll as part of a cohort to major in one of three core business tracks. They complete their Maryland Smith degree over four consecutive semesters as full-time students and graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree. The program follows an MBA-style cohort course format with a pre-set class schedule to ensure students complete their degree in two years.

Plus I have the smallest possible financial burden because I can commute from home, cut my living expenses and keep my part-time job that’s close by.” Keity Barrios Beltran, ’19 Management

At Smith everything happens on purpose, for a purpose. We design and deliver a rigorous academic curriculum coupled with hands-on experiences. It’s why Smith graduates are so sought-after among recruiters. With the combination of in- and out-of-class learning, you’ll become innovative, informed, influential and international in several core areas.

“We start class with the Wall Street Journal so students can see current supply chain logistics, all the world’s business indices and course-related news. I teach them how to evaluate what is going on in a company, how to make improvements and the concepts they need to apply.” Richard A. Hutchins Adjunct Professor

“My catering jobs made me think about best practices for event planning. In my Logistics & Supply Chain Management class, Professor Hutchins taught us about the flow of inventory. Everything just clicked. He encouraged me to pursue my dream to work at Amazon. Now, I’m in charge of Amazon’s inbound processes in Baltimore. I use what I learned in his class every single day.” Ashton Trevino, ’18, Management Specialization in Entrepreneurship Area Manager, Amazon, Baltimore

Cultivate a global mindset. It’s not just about studying abroad. Thinking globally is a necessary approach for businesses, large and small. To meet this demand, you’re taught the importance of adaptability and the different ways cultures and countries practice business. Smith graduates leave Shady Grove with a global mindset. It’s intentional.

“In my global marketing class, we learned how cultures react differently to social norms, such as a business lunch. We focused on current international business challenges. My group project was about why Uber has been so successful in this country compared to others. Since my colleagues are from countries like Turkey and China, and I am from Columbia, we could each contribute from these different points of view and present a global solution.” Stephania Valencia, ’19, Marketing Marketing Intern, Downtown D.C.
