Sample Description in ReportSample Description in ReportSample Description in ReportSample Description in Report Classroom size and suitability:

• The italicized paragraphs for each category below describe guidelines, based upon

Minnesota Department of Education and 21st Century Education criteria for that

category.

• Additional paragraphs provide a detailed description of how Lead-Deadwood Elementary School spaces either meet or do not meet guidelines.

• Staff Input and Analysis Notes are also provided.

MDE Guidelines:

850-950 sq. ft. in a middle/high school classroom for approximately 20-28 students.

Adequate storage including 15’-20’ of 2’ wide countertop, 3-4 3’x3’x2’upper and/or lower

cabinets for teacher and student materials/projects, etc., natural daylight, 6-8 electrical

outlets, wireless access, and a smart board, white board and bulletin board on the front

teaching wall are important factors for a secondary school classroom.

Classroom Size: There are seven general-purpose middle school classrooms (Math, Social

Studies, Language Arts, and Reading/Honors): two grade 6 rooms (805 sq. ft. /827 sq. ft.), two

grade 7 rooms (both 893 sq. ft.), two grade 8 rooms (both 903 sq. ft.) and one grade 6-8 room

(1040 sq. ft.).

There is also a Pre-School space (room 122 – 893 sq. ft.)

Natural Light: All classrooms have adequate natural light provided by two or more 4’x4’

windows in each room.

Countertop/fixed storage/Smart Boards, etc.: Five classrooms have adequate countertop

space with storage cabinets above and/or below the counter with the exception of the two 6th

grade rooms. These rooms have 8’ of countertop with storage cabinets above and below, and

10’ of tall storage units (tall boys). All classrooms have smartboards and white boards, with the

exception of Pre-School.

Staff Input: In the “Areas of Improvement – Areas of Satisfaction” exercise middle school staff

indicated that the “older section’ does not have adequate storage (2 post its). Additional staff

input is provided on pages 48-49 of this report

Analysis Notes: The analysis color summary is green – adequate: All classrooms are adequate

size and have adequate storage according to MDE guidelines. All classrooms have Smartboards,

sinks (no fountains), and adequate natural light.

Analysis color summary: Green - Adequate
