Dick Neal casts the first shovelful of earth at the base of a tree planted on theoccasion of his retirement as Director of the Technical Division at SLAC. The audience,
each of whom took a turn at the handle on the quiet Thursday afternoon of August 12,
consists of the laboratory directors and group leaders with whom Neal has worked closely.
This silk tree (Albizia Julibrissin) grows by the stairs leading to Neal's office in the
A&E Building facing the quadrangle. The accompanying plaque reads, "To SLAC and its
Staff, Richard B. Neal, Associate Director 1961 - 1982." Neal's career spanned not only
all of SLAC's history but also the evolution of the electron linac from the 1940's.
This ceremony took place at the middle of a busy August for SLAC. During the first two
weeks the Second Summer School on High Energy Particle Accelerators filled the site with
150 physicists specializing in the design of the machines of this field. This group was
followed in the second two weeks of the month by the Tenth Annual SLAC Summer Institute
on Particle Physics with nearly 400 participants. On the intervening weekend of August
14 and 15, SLAC held its 20th Anniversary Celebration with almost 2000 guests. These
events will be reviewed in this and future issues.

VAUGHN DAVIDSON
Vaughn Davidson, a mathematician and program-
mer in the I&C Department, died tragically on
Saturday, July 24. He drowned while swimming
alone in the pool at his apartment. Vaughn will
be sorely missed by all those who came in con-
tact with him. He was talented and dedicated in
his work, and very responsive to the needs of
the accelerator operators who were the users of
many of his programs. His easygoing, low key
approach to life and work made personal contacts
with him a pleasure.
It is ironic that at a Sector 6 picnic, on
the Friday before his death, he was enthusias-
tically describing his plans to improve his
swimming ability.
Vaughn came to the I&C Department in 1978,
after working as an experimenter in a Cal Tech
Group at SLAC for several years. He was a Phi
Beta Kappa graduate of Indiana University and
he received a M.S. in Physics from Cal Tech
in 1977. Vaughn was 32 years old.
An informal memorial service was held at Bol
Park in Palo Alto on Friday, July 30. Vaughn's
immediate family and many friends from SLAC were
present. He is survived by his mother and sis-
ter. The family requests that memorial contri-
butions be sent to the: Sempervirens FundDrawer BE
Los Altos, CA 94022.
