Le partitif
All, some, or none of something?
Ask two questions :
• Is it about all, some or none of something?
• Is the thing masculine, feminine, or plural?
All, some or none?• I like milk. J’aime le lait.
• Please pass the sugar. Passez-moi le sucre, SVP.
• We don’t like tomatoes. Nous n’aimons pas les
tomates.
• I like all milk in general.
• All of the sugar that is in the sugar bowl.
• All tomatoes in general.
Use the article alone when talking about all of something. . (le, la, l’, les)
All, some or none?• We eat bread. Nous mangeons du pain.
• Mom prepares steak for dinner.
Maman prépare de la viande pour diner.
• I have money. J’ai de l’argent.
• Some bread, not all of the bread in the house.
• Some steak, not all of the steak in the world.
• Some money, but not all of the money in the world.
Use de + the article when talking about some of something. . (De + le, la, l’, les)
De + le, la, l’ & les
• de + le = du
• de + la = de la
• de + l’ = de l’
• de + les = des

All, some or none?• They don’t have any luck. Ils n’ont pas de chance.
• We don’t have any banannas. Nous n’avons pas de bananne.
• I don’t have any money. Je n’ai pas d’argent.
• They don’t have any; there is none.
• There are none.
• « d’ » because « argent » begins with a vowel
Use de alone when talking about none of something. The thing is singular.
