Direct Object Pronouns

Pronouns are used to replace a noun, so you don’t have to repeat the same word

He likes cookies. He eats them often.

DIRECT OBJECTS ANSWER THE QUESTION WHAT? or WHO? AFTER the verb.

In English, pronouns mean:-Him - Her-It - Them

Direct Object Pronouns

In English, pronouns are placed AFTER the verb.He adores bananas. He adores them.

In French, pronouns are placed BEFORE the verb.

Il adore les bananes. Il les adore.

LELe replaces a masculine, singular object/person

I see the elephant. I see it.Je vois l’éléphant. Je le vois.

She sees the boy. She sees him.

Elle voit le garçon. Elle le voit.

In English, LE means HIM or IT

LALa replaces a feminine, singular object/person

Pronoun Rules1. Pronouns are placed BEFORE the verb.

Elle les adore. Il la mange.

2. In the negative, the pronoun stays beside the verb, with NE PAS on either side

Elle ne les adore pas. Il ne la mange pas.

3. The same applies in the futur simple. IT IS ONE VERB IDEA.

Elle les adorera. Il ne la mangera pas.

4. With 2 verbs, the pronoun goes before verb #2 (the infinitive) Il veut la manger.

Il ne veut pas la manger. 5. Au passé composé… the pronoun goes BEFORE

the AVOIR or ETRE Le film? Il l’a vu. Il ne l’a pas vu.

You live in Oakville. You live there. Vous habitez à Oakville. Vous y habitez.

Indirect Object PronounsIndirect pronouns replace an INDIRECT

IN FRENCH….An indirect object has “à” between the verb and the object.
