7 June 1831: The next conference [of theChurch]shall be held in Missouri, upon theland which I will consecrate unto my people

But our reflections were many, coming as we hadfrom a highly cultivated state of society in the east,and standing now upon the confines or westernlimits of the United States, and looking into the vastwilderness of those that sat in darkness; how

natural it was to observe the degradation, leannessof intellect, ferocity, and jealousy of a people that were nearly acentury behind the times, and to feel for those who roamedabout without the benefit of civilization, refinement, orreligion; yea, and exclaim in the language of the Prophets:

Whenwill the wilderness blossom as the rose? When will Zionbe built up in her glory, and where will Thy temple stand, untowhich all nations shall come in the last days? Our anxiety wassoon relieved by receiving the following: [D&C 57].

recipients of his law and ordinances. Blessingsoffered, but rejected, are no longer blessings, but become likethe talent hid in the earth by the wicked and slothful servant;the proffered good returns to the giver; the blessing isbestowed on those who will receive and occupy; for unto him

that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundantly, but untohim that hath not or will not receive, shall be taken away thatwhich he hath, or might have had.

Once we have truly repented, Christ will take away theburden of guilt for our sins. We can know for ourselvesthat we have been forgiven and made clean. The HolyGhost will verify this to us; He is the Sanctifier. No othertestimony of forgiveness can be greater.

.Satanwill try to make us believe that our sins are not forgivenbecause we can remember them. Satan is a liar; he tries to blur ourvision and lead us away from the path of repentance and forgiveness.God did not promise that we would not remember our sins.

Remembering will help us avoid making the same mistakes again.But if we stay true and faithful, the memory of our sins will besoftened over time. This will be part of the needed healing andsanctification process. Alma testified that after he cried out to Jesusfor mercy, he could still remember his sins, but the memory of hissins no longer distressed and tortured him, because he knew he had

will be safe on the water.
