GREENBOX / HOUSINGFEBRUARY ’10GLOBAL1 WEEK

This portable dwelling doubles as an exhibition space — easy to move to a city center or a public park. “Space Cake” has a 174 square foot interior, an exterior mirrored surface, and five expandable / retractable sections.

TANGO CENTERJANUARY ’10MONTMARTRE, PARIS6 WEEKS

One of the most famous, densely packed hills in the world—Montmartre is the site for this Tango Center which includes an exhibition space, learning center and library, dance studio, and night club. I used the slope (60 feet) to my advantage by creating an upper and lower entrance. This enables parts of the building to work independently from others throughout the day, allowing these very diverse programs to exist in the same space.

ROOF PLAN

GAB / SCHOOLOCTOBER ’10HONDURAS 3 WEEKS

The GAB project, in Honduras, is the addition of a secondary school to an existing primary school. The challenge was to take full advantage of the limited materials available to the community. Our team focused on the dual purpose that the structure and furniture can have. To adapt the needs of both the community and the school we kept the floor plans open and introduced furniture that was light and easy to assemble and disassemble. The beginning stages of development were collaborative and became more specific as it progressed. In the later stages I examined wall systems that would allow for ventilation and the ability to move the same table from the interior to exterior as required by the daily activities of the school.

MEDIATHEQUE / LIBRARYSEPTEMBER ’09PARIS 16ème8 WEEKS

The library project is set in the sixteenth arrondissement in Paris, a neighborhood full of young families. The site sits in an existing park in the heart of the neighborhood. Our team created a playful and efficient space, benefiting the entire community. We formulated a geometric form to maximize the site and then integrated that with a curved and fluid interior. The fluid interior defined how the space would be utilized and how the built-in furniture would be placed.

CU CENTER / COMMUNITYSEPTEMBER ’10CHAMPAIGN IL16 WEEKS

Villages have different zones and programs, yet remain cohesive through the use of common threads. Often the commonalities come from vernacular materials and building styles. The concept for this particular community center comes from the organization and design qualities of a village.

I implemented a scheme that allows the buildings to read as separate pieces, while being completely connected on the lower level. What happens outside these structures is as Important as what is happening within them. The west end of the site is excavated and a receding plaza creates a large outdoor space. Terracedstairways frame this space, creating intimacy while providing seating. The east end is contrasting with earth mounds and trees.

The combination of these ideasallows the community center to adapt to a multitude of needs. While providing diverse spaces for any sized group.
