Recently, data collected byAccommodationforstudents.com, a leading studentaccommodation website, found that 62% of the 46,000students reviewed in theirsurvey voted the city ofLiverpool the best place tostudy, while The Times GoodUniversity Guide 2012recorded a student satis-faction rate of 77 for TheUniversity of Liverpool, withLiverpool John MooresUniversity closely followingbehind, attaining asatisfaction ranking of 74.

Certainly, more youngpeople are realising the valueof higher education than everbefore, and Liverpooluniversities in particular haveseen significant increases inapplications.

Ray Withers, director ofleading property investmentagency Property Frontiers,

Create a style that is beyond the pale

IT would be understandable ifa home inhabited by twodesigners was a temple toperfection; an intimidatingspace where attention was

given to detail rather thanlifestyle.

But what’s so striking as you stepover the threshold of Atlanta Bartlettand Dave Coote’s Kent home is its airof tranquil informality, and a ‘kickoff your shoes and get comfortable’approach to decor.

This is an interior which cocks asnook at trends and transientfashion, and instead celebratescomfortable living with pared backdecor - bleached, strippedfloorboards, large squashy sofasdressed with light cotton throws, pale walls and an abundance ofnatural light flooding in throughlarge windows.

“We both have a relaxed, simplistic attitude to interior designand believe that our homes shouldreflect our personality,” saysBartlett, who juggles her workrunning the couple’s interiorscompany and working as a stylistwith bringing up their three youngsons and new-born daughter.

“What’s paramount to us is gooddesign, and noting fashion andtrends - but not following themrigorously. Then it’s about creating ahappy home, not a show home.”

Coote, a furniture and interiorsdesigner known for his quirky, retrostyle with an emphasis on reclaimedmaterials, has put his stamp on allareas of the house, but none more sothan in the kitchen.

“It’s the heart of the home and thehive of activity as a family room, where everything from homework tohobbies takes place. And it’s alsowhere we entertain,” says Bartlett.

“We didn’t want it to be ‘fitted’ asthat wouldn’t suit our style andwouldn’t feel as welcoming, so Davehas created a collection of units fromvintage cupboards and reclaimedwood, and we’ve used polishedConcrete and aluminium so itdoesn’t feel too quaint.”

While colour is confined to softaccents - washed-out blues, pastelpinks - there’s never any danger ofblandness, because the whole isenlivened by a liberal scattering oftoys belonging to their livelychildren, as well as stylish displays.

There are eye-catching quirkytreasures arranged on surfaces orhung on walls, ranging from vintage

shop signs and Victorian mirrors toassortments of delicate china platescollected over the years frommarkets.

The interior is a harmoniousfusion of both their styles, explainsBartlett.

“Originally we were bothsearching for a simpler, morelaid-back approach to decorating,”she says.

“Although our styles were quitedifferent - Dave’s quite rugged andmasculine and I’m more feminineand predominantly preferwhite-based schemes - we both lovehonest materials, artful recyclingand choosing vintage overnewly-made, and handmade ratherthan mass produced.”

It’s resulted in a hugely successfullook and company that they’ve called

Pale and Interesting, which they alsocelebrate in their new book by thesame name.

“We want to show that it’s notdifficult or expensive to create alight, airy home that works for you,”she says. “It’s all about getting backto basics, tapping into your ownstyle, editing your possessions so youretain only what’s useful andbeautiful, and then you can live in anenvironment that’s calm, easy andunpretentious.”

CLEVER COLOUR“An all-white scheme will need tohave some colour somewhere, whether it’s in curtains, cushions, furniture or simply a vaseful ofacid-green foliage,” says Bartlett.

“Source furniture from junk shopsand markets, and paint it in soft

shades of gentle grey and blue, inspired by the colours whichpredominate on antique French andSwedish pieces.

“Other options include paintingevery chair around the dining table adifferent colour for an eclectic effect, displaying a collection of colouredjugs on open shelves or hangingcurtains in a bold vintage floral.”

STYLISH TIP: Loose covers inpastel hues of lilac, lemon yellow ordusky pink will add a note offemininity, she suggests, while slategrey or denim is more appropriatefor a more masculine feel.

TOUCHY-FEELY“A room devoid of texture will feelhard and cold, and not compatiblewith an inviting retreat that soothesand feeds the senses,” she says.

“Aim to contrast andcomplement texturesthroughout your interior, from walls and floorsthrough to cushions andthrows.Tongue-and-groovepanelling is a great wayto add understatedtexture to walls.

CREATIVE KITCHEN“A soulless off-the-pegkitchen pluckedstraight off theshowroom floor withendless rows of fittedcabinets will not suit apale and interestinginterior,” says Bartlett.“Instead, have fun andbe creative, combiningan antique dresser withindustrial style shelvesor a sleek bank of fittedcupboards with a

vintage French linen press.

“Scour salvage yards forinspirational finds such as old schoollockers to house your mops andbrooms, or a shop fitting that couldbe transformed into a kitchen islandwith plenty of storage spacebeneath.”

STYLISH TIP: Paint cabinetdoors for an instant new look, andpaint the inside of glazed cupboardsto give a burst of colour. Choose alarge trestle or wooden refectorytable for dining, which will blendwith any scheme, and add decorationwith a collection of vintage chinadisplayed on a wall or in a cabinet.

SLEEPING SANCTUARY“A bedroom should offer the

perfect balance between indulgenceand simplicity,” says Bartlett.

“Using peaceful, sleep-inducingshades like soft, chalky white andpale blues, while incorporatingsimple furniture, soft bedding and afew decorative touches, will helpconjure a place that’s a real retreat.”

She suggests soft greys, pale lilacsand pinks, the gentlest aquamarineor creamy neutrals for the walls, andstripped or painted floorboards, withan antique bedstead in wood or iron.

STYLISH TIP: Fabric dye is abrilliant way to refresh tired orout-of-date bedlinen, she advises. Beimaginative with bedside tables -consider a simple block of wood, astool, or contrast a vintage bed witha modern accessory, such as aperspex cube.

TREASURE TROVE“Give your home plenty of soul by

adorning the space with the thingsyou love,” she says.

“It doesn’t matter that yourcherished 1960s tulip table doesn’texactly match your grandmother’sChippendale chair, or if yourhusband’s record collection takesover half the sitting room.

“Give those items pride of place. The important thing is thateverything you have out on displayshould have personal meaning foryou and your family.”

STYLISH TIP: The first step is todeclutter your home and considerwhich items you want tucked out ofsight and which you want toshowcase.

For an effective display, rememberyou don’t need to have everythingout at the same time - ringing thechanges keeps things interesting.
