1. INTRODUCTION:

i. A psychological profile is built through evidence from the scene of the crime

which is integrated into psychological theory; (WORLD OF FORENSIC SCIENCE WEBSITE).

Profiling or criminal investigation assessment is an educated attempt to

provide investigative agencies with specific information as to the type of

individual(s) who committed a certain crime, GEBERTH, (1981). The practice of

psychological profiling remains very much a virgin area and largely unpopular

amongst law enforcement agencies in Nigeria particularly by the Nigeria Police

Force in the course of their various investigations. Contrary to this, the practice

has become trendy in unravelling crimes by counterpart law enforcementagencies in developed nations particularly the Federal Investigations Bureau

(FBI), USA and other western nation sister agencies. Criminal psychological

profiling is gradually being incorporated into police procedures and operations

despite a dearth of empirical research to proclaim its validity and thus

admissibility as evidence in courts of law. Offender profiling is quite different

from geographic profiling which is an investigative aid that predicts the

offender's most likely location (i.e., home, work, social venues and travelroutes).

ii. 166 & 107 recorded cases of robbery was one of the ten most prevalent crimes

recorded in Ogun State Police Command area of responsibility in 2006 and




2007 respectively; NIGERIA POLICE ANNUAL REPORT (2007, 177). This represented 12% &

10% correspondingly in the years under reference. The concept of victimology,

an important part of psychological profiling was embraced to shed light on the

motivation for the crime which revealed the desires driving the perpetrators.Such questions as whether perpetrators were known to the victims, the degree

of the perpetrators aggressiveness or hostility and if offenders had a prior

knowledge of their victims’ neighbourhood were asked from both sets of

respondents.
