To practice your use of the past tense, change these sentences into past tense.

Future Tense

Task 2a. Try writing these words into a simple future tense sentence:

Now try changing these word into their simple future form in a conversation.

The simple future is used:

To predict a future event:

It will rain tomorrow. Tomorrow, I will go to work.

You can also use the negative in simple future:

It won’t rain tomorrow Tomorrow, I won’t go to work.

Finding the main idea

The main idea is what the text is mostly about. In a paragraph, the main idea is the most important thought about the topic. The main idea is usually a sentence, and it is usually the first sentence. The writer then uses the rest of the paragraph to support the main idea.

Let’s use the paragraph below as an example. First read the title, look at any pictures and find the topic, then look for the main idea.

Summer is a wonderful time to spend at West Beach. It is a beach with light-coloured, soft sand. The coastline goes on for a long way and many people enjoy walking along it. Children like to play in the surf and walk along the rocks that are visible at low tide. This is a fun beach for people of all ages. 

In this paragraph:     the topic is West Beach the main idea (what the writer is saying about the topic) is that summer is a

Task 4: Becoming a Library MemberBrimbank Libraries are free and open to all. To join the library you will need proof of your name and current Victorian address. Children who are under the age of 18 must be joined up by a parent or guardian. Young people aged 16-17 years and with proof of identification may join the library as an independent. You may join the library by visiting any of our 5 Libraries at Sunshine, Sydenham, St Albans, Deer Park and Keilor.

go off- to make a loud noise or to explode. My alarm clock went off at 7:00 a.m.

go over- to review. You should go over your homework before you give it to the teacher. Make sure there are no mistakes.

go on- to happen. What is going on in Australia right now?

go with- to match, to be similar to. My shirt and pants are both blue. They go with each other.

go out- (1) to stop working (machines or electrical things). The electricity went out last night. I couldn't see anything.

go out- (2) to be a part of a social activity. Every weekend I go out with my friends.

go along with- to agree with or follow. Tommy usually goes along with what I say. He trusts me.

To go off like a frog in a sock - To be very excited.
