ISLAND PAINTINGSL. C. Armstrong

Magical Realism is most often connected to the literary and film genres, however, the term was coined by German art critic Franz Roh in 1925 to describe the return to verisimilitude, known as Neue Sachlichket, (“New Objectivity”). Ordinary subjects were rendered with such intensity of color, and faithfulness to detail, that they were imbued with a magical force. For over 20 years I have painted landscapes that incorporate figures, and objects, that expand upon Magical Realism by presenting everyday objects as both fantastic and hyperreal. My paintings feature outsized flowers over sunrises, sunsets, and seascapes; and tiny creatures, both human and animal, populate the middle ground, and add to the disorientating scale shifts of the scene. A stage is set for the dream to commence, a dream of a “Peaceable Kingdom,” that we long to return to, a dream of Eden.

My paintings are hypnotic re-presentations

of the world as I choose to see it; lit by the light of long ago, by the original light of the sun, or the moon. The flowers seem backlit, or lit from within. The artists I admire all use light for spiritual effect. When painted and observed, light is transformed into a tangible object with spiritual properties. The light of the halo, the light of Vermeer, of de La Tour, the light of Van Gogh, the light of O’Keeffe. The German Romantic painters, especially Caspar David Friedrich found the spiritual in nature. This was also the guiding light for the 19th c. American Hudson River School painters and the Luminists. The light shone through John Ford’s Westerns (riding off into the sunset), Rothko, and the Californian neon and light artists, Irwin, Sonnier, Nauman, Flavin, Turell.

I grew up in Southern California, working

summers in my father’s neon shop. I painted signs and airbrushed vans to pay my tuition

through Art Center College of Design. This early training helped develop highly disciplined brush skills which are still evident in my work today. My choice of materials, portrait linen, gessoed and sanded to a silky-smooth finish, layers upon layers of thin acrylics or oils, (along with some airbrushing), allows me to achieve an almost ethereal atmospheric background upon which I add my high definition flowers and figures. This tendency to present everything in sharp focus, rather than using a one point selective focus, adds to the heightened experience that the paintings strive to create.

The “realistic” part of Magical Realism is

the snake in the garden, the tornado on the horizon, the fiery smoke from the fuse, the bird on the barbed wire. However, my paintings are primarily about focusing on the good, and on the resilience of people and nature, and most importantly on finding magic in the everyday. The viewer is invited to recover the symbols that can enrich our increasingly virtual lives, and to embrace the beauty of reality.
