WELCOMELittle did I realize when I ended last year’s sale catalog letter with the words, “If you can’t make it to the sale, be sure to watch on DV Auction,” that we would have a complete white-out blizzard on sale day with 38 people in the stands, which included family and the sale crew, auctioneer and some ringmen. However, 743 of you logged on to DV Auction to watch the sale and you can bet that I have looked that list over many times in the past few months won-dering just what you thought as you saw the cattle come through the ring with so much snow packed on them they could hardly see. The one thing I can say is, we can’t thank you enough for your support! It is truly appreciated and we are humbled by the whole experience.

Right now as you are reading this letter, I hope that you will join me in raising your hand above your shoulder and give yourselves a pat on the back. We have all survived this past year – from blizzard after blizzard, to droughts, fi res and sever summer storms across the country. We also need to remember that we are so lucky to live the lives we lead involved in the agriculture industry. I was reading an article on a family the other day that stated how, as farmers and ranchers, we have so much faith and may not even realize it. We have faith that tomorrow will be better, we will get enough rain, that we can make it through another blizzard, drought or fl ood, that

the sun will shine, the crops will grow and livestock will survive. We often forget how important of a role we play in the world and that our “job” is just as important as everyone else’s. We need to be proud of what we accomplish every day of the year and take a little time to refl ect on how much we have survived on pure faith, whether you realized it at the time or not.

Like I said, last year I could talk about the cattle markets or what we think of the cattle in the sale, but as we stated last year we wouldn’t have a sale if we didn’t believe in these cattle. Our son Alex (who enjoys judging livestock for SDSU) keeps trying to pick the top show heifer prospect out of the group of heifers and last weekend he fi nally came to this conclusion: “I think you could throw a halter on any one of those heifers and be competitive. You may not win every show, but you will compete.” The best part about it is we know these girls will also make good cows.

The sale will be held at the Ramada Inn via video. The cattle will be on display at the ranch the days prior to the sale. We realize that it is a little different to buy cattle via video when they aren’t located at the auction site, however we wanted to make it more family-convenient by having the whole day’s activities at the hotel. If you are fl ying into Aberdeen and need transportation to the ranch, please give us a call. We encourage you to come out and look at the cattle and pick out your top cattle and then have some alternates in mind in case you don’t get the ones you wanted. If you have questions or comments, please call one of us.

We invite you to spend the day and evening with us even if you aren’t interested in purchasing cattle. What more could you want than to spend New Year’s Eve with your friends and fellow ag enthusiasts. We know you are busy just as we are, but you never know what tomorrow will bring, so take a little time and enjoy yourself on New Year’s whether it is with us or at home with your families.

DEVELOPMENT, VACCINATION RECORD AND DELIVERY ARRANGEMENTS

The bulls and heifers were pasture weaned on an Accu-ration mix and grass. They stayed at the ranch until November 4th when they were brought home and put on a 48 MgCal TMR ration consisting of ground hay, silage, corn, protein and Rumensin supplement. All the calves have been vaccinated with Inforce and Ul-trabac 7 as baby calves, boosted at spring pasture turnout with Bovishield BVD, Inforce 3, Haemophilus, Mycoplasma, 7 -Way and Dectomax injectible. Prior to weaning they were vaccinated with Haemophilus, IBR, BVD, BRSV, PI3, 7-Way & Mycoplasma. They were all poured with Cydectin Pour-On on December 8th.

The bull calves were weighed on November 21st and averaged 864 lbs. with an average of 3.7 lbs.-per-day gain. The bull calves will be sold as guaranteed breed-ers according to the RAAA sale terms and conditions. We will keep all bull calves free of charge until March 1, 2012, at which time they will be semen tested and delivered or picked up. You can arrange to continue having the bulls fed at a rate of $3.50 per day with all bulls needing to be delivered by April 15, 2012.

The heifer calves have been brucellosis vaccinated and will be sold as guaranteed breeders according to the sale terms and conditions of the RAAA. Open heifers and cows need to be picked up or delivered by January 10, 2012. Shorthorn cows will be confirmed bred by vet prior to sale day and fall calving cows have been AI’d back to High Capacity 224 and the clean up bull Brown-Rice Proud Bandit X2014 (#1393801) was turned in on 11-28-11.

Deliveries will be coordinated to the least possible cost to the buyer. If you are not hauling your own cattle, we will collect trucking fees at time of purchase settle-ment. Delivery will begin January 2, 2012, on females and March 1, 2012, on bulls. If you are bringing a trailer and want to haul for others, we will gladly line you up with trucking in your direction at the fee structure below. We will offer the first 1,000 miles trucking on every animal at the following rates.

1-4 head @ $0.25/mile/head5-9 head @ $0.20/mile/head10 head or more @ $0.15/mile/head

All animals will be handled at the buyer’s risk. We highly recommend insuring your purchases.

One of the most memorable and exciting auctions of my 2010 season was the Lazy J Bar Ranch inaugural New Year’s Eve Sale. Even with a raging blizzard and limited attendance, DVAuction and the internet were loaded with over 700 viewers and bidders! Last year was a great sale – even in a white-out blizzard!

John & Stephanie have a passion for Red Angus cattle and have built one of the most exciting herds in North America. December 31st will show-case this event and I urge you to come to the ranch and look over some of the most explosive and “loaded for growth” Red Angus cattle you will find anywhere on the North American continent. Sons and daughters of the legendary UBAR High Capacity 224, the $77,500 Mojito, Equals Thunder, Majestic Lightning, Halfmann Hustler, JDRA Vaquero 636 and more will thrill even the most timid of cattlemen. I will repeat my earlier statement – these calves are explosive!

If you haven’t purchased your 2012 show heifer, there will be plenty to choose from in Aberdeen December 31st but most importantly, these

heifers have the Red Angus genetics to make great cows. Also, what better way to spend your New Year’s Eve than getting your bull bought now and leave them at the Lazy J Bar Ranch until next spring!

This year, the cattle will be available for viewing at the ranch on Friday and Saturday morning but the auction will take place in the comfort of the Ramada Inn via video. Please make advanced plans to come early and study the cattle on Friday. This is one set of bulls and heifers you don’t want to miss!

I visited the Lazy J Bar Ranch in early September and will be back through them prior to the auction. When you see this picture you will realize that she speaks for herself. We have had her at our place since April 2009 and she has not been fed grain just a bale of hay or grass depending on the season. Ok, I will admit she does see some grain but that is a handful when I am trying to get her in the corral, it is easier to lead her with a bucket than try and chase her in. She doesn’t seem to want to be very wild!! CopperQueen is deep bodied, feminine, free moving and carries plenty of natural muscle with excellent udder structure. We demand that our donor cows produce like the rest of our herd and that they are all treated the same. She stands in the top 1% for Milk and TM. High Capacity’s 2006 NWSS Pen of Three Heifers were Grand Champion. Not only can 224 sire superior pheno-type, but in 2008, his sons dominated bull tests across the country including the $17,500 half-interest Gilchrist Dr. Hoss bull in the Red Alliance Sale in Okla. He sired the 2008 National Champion Female in Fort Worth and the 2009 National Grand Champion Female (at the ’08 NILE) for Solution Genetics of Iowa. We purchased High Capacity as a 6-year-old for $51,000. As a rule, the 224 calves we have had on the ground have had great dispositions and easy to handle. If you want to use one of the most multi-dimensional bulls in the breed today, here he is. At print time, 224 was in the top 25% for six traits and only possesses a 1.7 BW EPD. He is tested OS free. Mojito sold to 10 progressive Red Angus breeders at the 2006 NWSS Mile High Classic Auction for $77,500. He has proven to be the growth powerhouse in the breed with extreme length, dark color and ample maternal traits for calf production. We have his daughters in our herd and they are proving to be top producers with excellent udders and great dispositions. Mojito has been at our place off and on for a couple years and is a pleasure to be around. You can catch him in the pasture and lead him in a trailer. He passes this great disposition to his calves. Mojito has sold numerous sale toppers including the 707 to Star G and Jerry Henderson for $18,000; 753 that Steph purchased for $7,000 before we married; and 721 to Jerry Kaup for $5,500; and many heifer calves too numerous to mention. He is tested OS free. Mojito presently resides at our ranch.

We acquired Thunder from the 2008 Star-Studded Event. Kyle Gilchrist fi rst discovered this bull in Reno at the 2003 Bet On Red Sale. Thunder had excellent style, performance, calving ease and a great disposition. The great thing about this bull is the calves come out small but they aren’t just some little babies that don’t grow. The calves we currently have on the ground express plenty of muscle and stand correct on their feet and legs and possess a stylish look. Here is our fi rst group of fi ve for the U-Pick-’Ems by High Capacity out of “Toast’s” dam. All we will say is good luck! We bought eight of these embryos from McKenzie in the Denver sale and put them all in and got six heifer calves. We thought we would offer pick of two of the fi ve heifers, the other three come home to the Lazy J Bar Ranch. This set of heifers has Alex scratching his head trying to fi gure out which is the best one. In fact, I think the judging team is possibly coming here to try and fi gure it out.

These fi ve girls are just about as close a match as you can get. Stylish, deep-bodied, broody, future money makers. We put these embryos in at the neighbor’s and when we fi nally got around to see them in August we just wanted to hide them until the sale was over. The only way you will appreciate the growth and power in this feminine of a package is if you are here the end of December to see them for yourself. This won’t be the last time you see or hear about these girls.

This morning while doing chores I was just thinking about High Capacity and how he was always in the way when we were feeding cattle. He kinda got special treatment during the winter and resided with the bred cows in the calving barn. He had his favorite spot in the shed where he laid every night and you just expected to see him there.

When it warmed up last spring, we moved him to a pen where he couldn’t get in the barn every night. Don’t think he didn’t try to get there! He was a good-sized bull but he could sneak in and out of the fenceline bunk alley faster than any of the other cattle. We would see him laying up on his mound in the lot with not a care in the world, but as soon as you turned your back, there he was in the way trying to sneak in the gate to get to what he thought was better feed.

The morning we did chores and didn’t see him on the mound, we knew something was wrong. We walked in the shed (still wondering how he got in) and there he was laying dead in his favorite spot.

It’s funny how you get attached to certain animals and he was one of those bulls for us. High Capacity 224 is missed but his progeny live on. He sires those long, deep-bodied cattle that have superior phe-notype and great dispositions. You have to appreciate him for everything he passes to his offspring.

Caution! This calf is subject to lots of attention! He is really deep bodied and has been coming on like a freight train the past month. He was the Reserve Bull Calf Champion at the S.D. State Fair and then was brought home and kicked out on grass for about 85 days until we brought them back into the lot in November. FALL BRED PAIRSThe only reason the fall cows are offered for sale is because the fall calving doesn’t work so great in our country when the winters can get so long and cold. Don’t get us wrong – we love calving them out in August but to try and keep the calves gaining weight in the cold winter months doesn’t seem to work as well in northeast South Dakota. You will notice that most of these cows are spring-bred cows in a fall program … they aren’t just a bunch of non-breeding slackers.

We ran into a bull wreck a couple years in a row. The fi rst year we sold the open cows. The second year I couldn’t stand to part with them – they were the top producers in our herd. We had

a bull that semen tested good, appeared to be breeding cows and when we pulled the bull 45 days later we started seeing all kinds of signs that we weren’t going to like preg check time.

We made the decision when these girls came up open that we would hold them over to breed for fall calvers. We will reserve the right to fl ush any of these cows at the buyer’s convenience.

They were AI bred to High Capacity 224. All fall cows cleaned up to BROWN-RICE PROUD BANDIT X201 (#1393801) from 11-28-11 to sale day.

“Deuce” (WY Clods Nu Drifter) is a 2008 Broadaxe Ranch gelding that is going to be a good sized gelding with a lot of substance. He is a beautiful blood bay color with just enough “chrome” to make him stand out. He is sired by Broadaxe Ranch’s fancy gray stallion, GBH SMOOTHWOOD CASH, who is a grandson of NU CASH and also shows prominent sires such as LONE DRIFTER, JET SMOOTH, and traces to DRIFTWOOD many times in his pedigree. GBH Smoothwood Cash is an extremely consistent sire whose colts are low-headed, athletic, well-muscled, have a lot of speed, and are natural stoppers. Nu Cash was a NRCHA Snaffl e Bit Futurity World Champion and, as of 2010, was the #4 Reined Cowhorse Sire. Lone Drifter was owned by Mel Potter of Arizona and was one of the last remaining grandsons of Driftwood. Lone Drifter is known to be a phenomenol broodmare sire as well as a great sire of rope horses with pleasant dispositions. Jet Smooth was a AAAT AQHA World Champion running horse and was a full brother to AQHA Hall of Fame running horse, Easy Jet. Deuce’s mother is a big, soggy mare with a lot of eye appeal and speed to burn. She has DASH FOR CASH, PARKER’S TROUBLE, and GO MAN GO breeding. Dash for Cash is a legend among race horse sires and an AQHA Hall of Fame horse. Go Man Go was also inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame and was a 3-time World Champion Racing stallion.
