Annasandrapalya: Many people utter “This summer is very hot.” quite often but do not think of an alternative to beat the heat.

What else other than 'planting saplings' could be easier for citizens to transform them into a more responsible citizen.

There are many summer camps organized this summer. Many parents take their children carefully in AC car without exposing them to the heat and put them in a variety of summer coaching classes. But do not make them realize the importance of planting saplings and spreading the message of greenery. Youth should be encouraged to find innovative methods in planting saplings and organise mass sapling planting. This not only keeps the surroundings green and clean but also counters the rapidly increasing temperature.

The government is giving free saplings. Any citizen can approach the BBMP and take saplings to locate and plant them in the right place and take care of them. Weekend Nuts Enthuse the Bustling Crowd

M.G. Road: A small group of six named as Weekend Nuts conducted an event called Smiley Day. Smiley Day even is conducted every month. This month, the

thevent took place on the 8 May 2010 along the roads of Majestic and MG Road of Bangalore. The Smiley Group distributed goodies to the less-fortunate-ones on road/Traffic Signal. Do you wonder who the receiver is? Anybody: A poor kid, a distressed beggar, a road-side vendor, Weekend-worker, a sun-tanned Traffic Cop - absolutely anybody!

They started from Cubbon Park towards Majestic; distributing goodies to all the small time road-side vendors in Sun. They were very happy to receive the goodies - Chocolates, Biscuits, juice, buttermilk. Every needy and tired person en route also received the goodies. The traffic cops were delighted to see the Nuts distributing goodies and exchanged smiles. Amidst the scorching heat, the Weekend Nuts group kept going with full of vigor. Thanks to the Weekend Nuts for doing this event every month.

Bangalore: Poor percentage of voter turnout in India is not new and almost all elections witness this scenario. Including state elections, nearly 40 to 50 percentage of people fail to vote. More than 15 crores of people have not yet received their Elector's Photo Identity Card (EPIC) so far in India. The problem persists mainly in urban areas where people do not volunteer to register their names or check the voters' list well in

advance.

Mr. Navin B Chawla, the Election Commissioner during his visit to Bangalore in a press conference accepted that it is the failure on the part of the Election Commission also. The EC receives frequent complaints about missing names in the voters list. Work is underway to distribute EPIC soon to the people who are not in possession of it. Meanwhile discussions on UID is on the anvil.

I n d i a T o p s i n Originating Spam and PhishingBangalore: According to a new report, internet spams and phishing are taking place on a large scale in India. This places India as the number one country in Asia and number three in the world for originating spams and phishing. India also ranked second for the origin of web-based attacks in the region, contributing 16 percent, after China, to account for 37 percent of the total attacks. Spam is an unsolicited message hackers post on the internet and mail to unknown recipients who would not otherwise choose to receive it.

Phishing is a fraudulent process used by cyber criminals to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details online by posing as a trustworthy entity in the electronic communication. Cyber criminals use stolen credit card information quickly to purchase goods online where minimal card details are required to authorise transactions. Besides physical goods purchased online for subsequent delivery, hackers buy digital goods such as music, software and gift certificates from online stores.

Right to Demand C l a r i t y o f F u n d i n g Bangalore: With the Right To Education (RTE) Act coming into effect, Karnataka has a few challenges to meet. In the first place, the state needs to recruit 20,000 to 50,000 teachers to meet t h e p u p i l t e a c h e r r a t i o . RG Nadadur, the principal secretary, Karnataka, had stated at a meeting that there was no clarity at the state level pertaining to the modality of funding under the RTE Act. “There are two different voices being heard — the state finance department is of the view that funds will flow from the treasury, whereas the education department wants the fund to flow through State Society Mode.”

The cricket fans in India are disappointed over Indian team's poor performance. Indian captain M.S. Dhoni ascribed the team's failure to late night parties. What is the real reason behind it? When it comes to physical fitness and body conditions, Asians are only next to Europeans or Africans. The Indian players will easily be out of gear if they indulge in excessive night parties. The responsibility lies in one’s own hand and so the players have to think of the matches ahead rather than getting distracted unnecessarily. Through IPL, BCCI is trying to exploit popularity of cricket in India. This year BCCI has made numbers of changes in the format of IPL to suit it more for advertisements. The post IPL match late night parties are indirectly 'mandatory' for the players. The parties pave way for tie ups and business deals with numerous television channels, apart from bragging rights from the team owners. Any player who doesn't attend risks incurring the wrath of the team owners and his position in the team.

The vision of people controlling IPL T20 is to make IPL tournament a popular event and earn lots of money. The other considerations such as player's fitness and preparing for other international tournaments are only secondary. They want to treat World Cup T20 only next to IPL. Accordingly they try to mould the players. This will not materialize due to various factors and criticism from public. In the IPL third edition, many players from abroad especially Australians did not play to their full potential. The vigor with which Australians play the T20 world cup was certainly not found in their IPL performance. Also they gain experience from IPL, understand and weigh Indian players so as to plan well in the world cup. Ultimately IPL remain as a platform for foreign players to earn money and know the Indians and their potential in cricket.

MIND WORKS-34PRO-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR: Helping Other PeopleBy UK Athikkal

-----------Imagine you are driving to your work place in the morning. And you witness an accident involving a stranger who is in need of immediate medical aid. You notice that none of the onlookers is coming forward to extend a helping hand. What will be your response in such a situation?

Most of the social psychological research deals with what people do in a sudden, unexpected emergency. This topic comes under pro-social behavior which refers to actions that provide benefit to others without any obvious benefit for the person who carries them out.

What we observe is that a majority of bystanders are indifferent in such situations for various reasons. With regard to responding positively to such emergency, studies have proposed a series of five steps in the process.

A pro-social act will not occur unless bystander:?Pays attention to the situation, ? Interprets it as an emergency,?Assumes responsibility for the situation, ? Knows what must be done to provide to provide help and?decides to engage in the helping behavior.

Apart from several aspects of the situation, that encourage or discourage helping, dispositional factors are also involved, and a combination of traits make up the altruist personality. There are many additional factors that

influence pro-social behavior. Helpful behavior is enhanced by the presence of helpful models and which are also shown in the T.V. media, models and so on. A victim is most likely to receive help if he or she is liked by the bystander and also is similar to that person.

Most of the explanations about helpfulness assume that the final motivation to act is based on whether the perceived outcome for the bystander is increased positive effect or decreased negative effect. Research shows that motives based on cognitive processing increase with age, while the self-centered hedonistic motives decrease.

Basically the attitudes of the individual and the empathetic pattern of his thoughts are the critical determinants that decide whether the person remains a passive bystander or an active and helpful altruistThis column is contributed by U K Athikkal, Life Skill Coach and Certified N L P Trainer. IgnoranceThus Spake Sri Sankara:Just as a piece of rope is imagined to be a snake (in the semi-darkness) and an oyster to be a piece of silver, so is the Atman determined to the body by an ignorant person.

Just as the stump of a tree is mistaken for a human figure and a mirage for water, so is the Atman determined to be the body by an ignorant person. The illusion of Samsara is due solely to an illusory notion and is not an absolute reality. Atman is verily one and without parts. Whereas the body consists of many parts: and yet the people see these two as one! What else can be called ignorance but this?

Action cannot destroy ignorance, for it is not in conflict with ignorance. Knowledge alone destroys ignorance as light destroys darkness. It is only because of ignorance that the Self appears to finite. When ignorance is destroyed , the Self, which does not admit of nay multiplicity whatsoever, truly reveals itself by itself, like the Sun when the cloud is removed. Avidya o r ne isc ience , i ndesc r ibab le an beginningless, is called the cause, which is an upadhi superimposed on Atman.

As the movement that belongs to water is attributed, through ignorance to the moon in it, so also agency, enjoyment and other limitations which belong to the mind are falsely attributed to the Atman.

Two Kannada movies are getting released this week: Naanu Nanna Kanasu and Preethiyinda Ramesh. Naanu Nanna Kanasu is veteran artist Prakash Raj's directorial debut. The later is Ramesh Arvind's movie. Naanu Nanna Kanasu is a movie based on father and daughter relationship while Preethiyinda Ramesh is a romance flick about internet love. In fact, Ramesh Arvind has also done a cameo in Raj's NNK which stars Prakash Raj himself, along with former child actress Amoolya and various other stars like Seethara, Achyuth Kumar, S Chandru, and Rajesh. Preethiyinda Ramesh also stars the two scintillating beauties Suma Guha and Ramanithu Chaudhary. The movie is the directorial debut of Gunakumar. The songs from NNK are already a hit with the public. On the other hand, in case of Preethiyinda Ramesh, the new age internet romance theme has generated a good amount of interest in not only the youth but also the older generations.

If we feel for our land, each of us should pledge to plant a sapling.” he adds. Let's beat the heat and enjoy a cool and pleasant environment in the future.

It may be recalled that Deve Gowda has been raging against IT companies and accusing them of grabbing prime land around Bangalore.

BEML Layout: In modern days, with increasing pollution, change in migratory patterns, and rise of human population, many ecosystems are in danger of losing the harmony. A huge aquarium built by Mr. V i j ay P Thomas o f Aquaverse (Kundalahalli Gate) system is a symbolic representation of a perfect ecosystem that men should adopt for a prosperous living as per fengshui.

Aquarium cleaning is an undesirable chore, especially for busy people. Ignoring a dirty fish tank for too long will lead to foul odors and eventually, dead fish.

To overcome these hurdles, you have ecosystem aquariums available nowadays with zero maintenance. “Even food for fish is supplied through automated system.” says Mr. Vijay.

The term ecosystem describes both the living and non-living components of an area that interact with one another. All the components are inter-dependant in some way with each other.

In this aquarium tank, the plants take

carbon dioxide and gives out oxygen that helps fish in respiration. An artificial light with an intensity of 10000 kelvin is fitted on the top. The water is cleaned with the help of bio filters that consists of activated carbon, ceramic balls and bio balls. Mr. Vijay has created the aquarium with an artistic touch. Besides colorful fish in the aquarium tank, there are imported plants, shrimps(which act as scavengers), small rocks, aqua clay, red soil, black soil, imported wooden piece, etc kept under water.

One can observe how different species interact with each other, study the natural cycle of each species and understand the relationship between

A Self Sustaining Eco-System

different species- producer, predator and prey. An aquarium also helps children understand the importance of ecosystem. It takes 14 hours for Mr. Vijay to construct this kind of aquarium tank. It costs around Rs. 2.5 lakhs.

Akshaya TritiyaOne of the four most auspicious days of the vedic calendar, it is said that one need not check for muhurtham on this day. Akshaya means eternal- that which never diminishes. Akshaya Tritiya falls on the third day after the new moon in the month of Vaishakh. It is said to be the birthday of Lord Parashuram, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It is said that “Barley” one of the important ingredients of homa was created on this day. Mythology has it that Sudama, a poor friend of Krishna visited Krishna on this day, and when he returned home his house was full of riches. In the

period of Mahabharath, when sage Durvasa visited the Pandavas in exile, and Draupadi had no food to offer, Lord Krishna came to her help and having just a morsel of food left in a pot filled the stomach of the sage and his disciples who went to take bath and never returned to have food. It is said that Sage Vyasa began composing the Mahabharath on this day. According to Hinduism Thretha yuga started on this day. It is also said that the sacred river Ganga began to flow on earth on this day. As per Puranas charity of food, clothes and other edible materials along with homa, and puja is good for Hindus.

Basavanna JayantiBasavanna Jayanti, or Basava Jayanti, marks the birth anniversary of the 12th Century thinker, social reformer, saint and religious teacher, Basaveshwara. A t rue humanis t , Basaveshwara stood for the upliftment of the downtrodden and fought the evils that had crept into the Brahmanic Vedic tradition.
