By Vic GroahI have wondered how a person becomes
loyal to a particular brand. You know a Chevyman or a Ford guy. In my youth I knew severalof my father’s generation that were rigidly loyalto one brand of car. One would drive only Ply-mouths, my uncle only Fords and Father lessridged but favored Chevrolet. Some guystoday are like that too. When I began delvinginto cars at the ripe old age of 14 I asked fatherwhat would be the best choice for my first car.The answer was direct and to the point, buy aChevrolet, they are easier to work on and since
I would be tearing my car up in my youth itwould be easier to repair. That turned out tobe good advice. My five dollar 1932 Chevroletwent through hell and the rare time I did haveto repair it the job was easily done with com-mon mechanics tools, unlike my friend’s flathead Ford that required special tools to disas-semble the engine. With this in mind I shouldhave become a dyed in the wool Chevy guy butI have owned just 19 Chevrolets.
Uncle Glenn drove only Fords until he gota lemon. From that time on he drove onlyChevrolets. That’s how it seems to go, once
settled in one takes the comfortable path. Peo-ple, after all, are creatures of habit. Then thereis the wanderer like me, yes I too am a creatureof habit in many ways, same wife for al-most fifty years, but tend to roamaround the car market a bit. Why? Idon’t know. I seem to be a bit of a gad-fly. It is not that I don’t know what Ilike; it is that I seem to like a lot ofstuff. Many guys my age are drawn toeither what they had as a young personor what they would like to have had ifthey could have afforded it. Then
there are the greedy, like me, that want both. I
Brand Loyalty
How many of you remember the lyrics tothe 1966 song The Taxman by the Beatles?
Let me tell you how it will be…There's one foryou, nineteen for me
Cos I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxmanShould five per cent appear too small…Be thank-ful I don't take it all
Cos I'm the taxman, yeah I'm the taxman Ifyou drive a car, I'll tax the street; If you try to sit,I'll tax your seat; If you get too cold I'll tax theheat; If you take a walk, I'll tax your feet. CosI'm the taxman, yeah I'm the taxman
Don't ask me what I want it for (Aahh Mr.Wilson) If you don't want to pay some more
(Aahh Mr. Heath) Cos I'm the taxman, yeah,I'm the taxman Now my advice for those who dieDeclare the pennies on your eyes Cos I'm the tax-man, yeah, I'm the taxman.
And you're working for no one but meUnfortunately it appears that the Beatles
may have had it right…Not only do California
legislators and regulators feel that they knowwhat is best for Californians, they actuallythink we are stupid and need them to watchover us.
They mismanage the money we give them

St. Mary’s Community Summer Fesitval a success
have owned 81 cars in my life time and am not through just yet. There are so many great ones out there to try. I just wish I hadthe financial resources to keep them all; was not to be. At thispoint I am too old to take on another 81 cars so I must stream-line my expectations; maybe be loyal to just eight or ten brands. At the present time I have several variations of just eight brandsof cars. If I expand that to let’s say, a dozen brands then I couldhave a nice representation of cars. I think I could do that, beloyal to just twelve brands of cars. Now that is what I call truebrand loyalty; a sincere pledge to be loyal to just twelve brandsof cars. Yes, I can do that.
That’s the way it is with us car collector types. Compromisesmust be made, the ideal given up for the sake of practicality. Wemust shoulder on, but wait, there is my friend Tom who hassome sixty amazingly restored cars of one make and is restoring
more; hmmm, whatto make of that, truebrand loyalty to itsfullest extent.
In writing this Ihave come to the con-clusion that the hardcore car collectors like
Tom orme area b o u tone halfb u b b l eoff true.Yes, weare a bitdifferentto say thel e a s t .U n l i k eU n c l e
Glenn who got one bad Ford and changed brands forever someof us keep trying them until we are convinced we have experi-enced the best, or like Tom, if you are convinced you really havefound the best brand then stock up on a great variety of thatmarquee. Don’t messaround with this, goahead and do it up royal.
To my friends whohave just one or twocars, all the same brandI say to you, go out andsmell the flowers. Theworld is not just roses, carnations and daises aregood too. Check outwhat is out there, put
together a nice bouquet of cars, who knows, you may find yourtrue love at a collector car dealer near you.

By Terry FellowsAnyone who owns or has ever owned a classic car, hot rod,
or muscle car can probably recall when cruising the main streetor strip in their hometown was the most exciting and entertain-ing thing for a young person to do on a Friday or Saturday night. Some of my fondest memories of summers past growing up ina small town were cruising up & down the main drag, checkingout all the hot cars and girls. It doesn’t really matter where yougrew up, in the days of cheap gas, drive-ins and rock n’ roll, cruising with your high school friends was probably the mostpopular way to spend a Friday or Saturday night. As the sun was setting, we would pack as many people into
one car as possible and head for the main drag. I can still hearthe sounds of guys yelling, horns honking and girls laughing, astheir cars rumbled down the street. Every guy thought heowned the fastest car and was always looking for someone torace from one stop light to the next. Screeching tires and loudexhausts consistently echoed throughout the street scene, whileother cruisers would have fun trying to get a car filled with girlsto pull over at the next car hop. It didn’t matter who you wereor who you were with, everybody had fun cruising. The movie“American Graffiti” is a great example of what cruising was allabout during those days. Unfortunately due to high gas prices and ever-changing en-
vironmental laws, the days of cruising the main drag for hourson end are a thing of the past. Today, our cruise nights are prettymuch limited to cruise-ins, where owners of classic cars, hotrods or muscle cars drive into one specific location and parktheir cars for a night of showing & socializing with other carenthusiasts. Most cruise-ins are held once a month on a partic-
ular day and time. Even with all of these constraints, the KingsArea Road Relics (KARR) Club is setting attendance recordsthis year at their cruise-ins in Hanford, which are held on thelast Saturday of each month (Mar-Oct).According to the President of the KARR Club, he con-
tributes several factors to their cruise nite success at DerWienerschnitzel. “First of all, people make all the difference, and it’s about having fun. Cruisers want to have fun, and wemake every effort to live up to our club’s motto; let the goodtimes roll. Secondly, most car owners have already investedthousands of dollars in their vehicles, and really dislike the ideaof having to shell out more money just to show it. Like mostcruise-ins, our cruise nite is free and open to most vehicles. Moreover, the owner of Der Wienerschnitzel in Hanfordwholeheartedly supports the club’s cruise nite event, and trulywants the cruisers to have a good time. The restaurant definitelydoes their part, by offering a complete meal deal during thecruise nite event for less thanthree dollars! Lastly, the enter-tainment has to take the cruis-ers back down memory lane.During the event, the clubplays the most popular hits ofthe 50s, 60s and early 70s inorder to set the tone for thenight’s festivities. This year, the club has teamed up withKFUN 92.5 FM, who broad-casts “live” at the cruise nites, playing some of the greatest
car songs ever recorded.”So, the next time you want to take a trip down memory lane,
head on over to Der Wienerschnitzel in Hanford during one ofthe last Saturdays of the month, and let the memories comingroaring back, while letting the good times roll with other fellowcar enthusiasts. For more information, contact Der Wiener-schnitzel at 584-9769 or visit www.karrclub.com

by Paul A. EisensteinThe Saleen S7 ended its run with a 750-hp twin-turbo V-8
capable of 248 mph.Anybody – well, anybody with enough cash, anyway – can
own a Saleen S7, or even the track-ready S7R. But how wouldyou like to own the actually rights to those and the never-pro-duced S5S Raptor? In an unusual move, the company is offeringup the basic intellectual property, along with the parts thatmight help you start to build a few of those supercars. In a highly unusual move, the company says it will see off
the IP rights to those three models, as well as a handful of never-completed chassis and frames. It has turned to auction houseGA Global Partners to handle the sale.
“These prized assets have been kept in safe storage for thepast five years which makes this a truly rare and historic oppor-tunity to own all assets and rights to the first ‘Great AmericanSupercar,’ and allow a new owner to continue the legacy withthe S5S Raptor,” said Adam Alexander, CEO of GA Global

It can be difficult to attend the average car show where classwinners are often Chevys. Even worse if any of them arepainted red, medium metallic blue or fly yellow. In the mid90’s, the Pontiacs of Central California (POCC) car club de-cided to create a show where the other brands of General Mo-tors could gather and vie for recognition in over thirty classeswhere judges scored each entry for quality of workmanship andoriginality. While we appreciate Chevys and Fords andMopars, we thrive on Pontiacs, Buicks, Oldsmobiles, Cadillacsand GMC trucks.
The first two years, the Central Valley Classic (CVC) washeld at the Fresno County Sportsman’s Club in Fresno, thenseveral years at the Madera Fair Grounds before settling in atthe Madera Courthouse Park. We benefited greatly from thegenerous sponsorship of Don Bonander, owner of VintageBuick, Cadillac and GMC. After he sold the dealership, wewere supported by Gill Buick-GMC. This year, we decided totake a big step and relocate the CVC to Bicentennial Park inClovis which features beautiful grounds and abundant shade. We were fortunate to receive key support from Kitahara Buick-
GMC of Fresno. Larry Kitahara has been a great supporter ofour club and show.
The CVC got off to a rousing start with a Friday, May 1,with a free barbecue for all entry families held at the Home-wood Suites/Hampton Inn in Clovis. Hot tri-tip, homemadebeans, pilaf, salad and bread were cooked up on-site and servedwith ice cold drinks. Jim Wangers, the ‘Godfather of the GTO’was our Guest of Honor and provided us with the opportunityof celebrating his 89th birthday with cake as dessert.
E a r l yon Satur-day morn-ing, May 2,P O C Cm em b er swere hardat worksetting upthe showfield at Bi-centennial Park. Cars showed up soon after to claim their as-signed parking spots so that they could polish and clean everylast nut and bolt before judging got underway. With over 120entries, this was our largest show ever, and the quality of thecars proved that the CVC has become an important annualevent for Pontiac, Buick, Oldsmobile, Cadillac and GMC own-ers from across California. We also attracted attendees fromNevada, Oregon, Washington and Arizona.
On site, car owners had more to do than just look at otherentries as there was a special display area featuring vintage boatsand camping trailers, race cars, GMC heavy trucks and vendors.Barbecued burgers and cold drinks were sold along with ticketsfor a 50/50 raffle and large prize raffle. Music from the 50’s.60’s and 70’s drifted over the show field all day.
At days end, awards were made to the top three entries ineach class along with awards for best Pontiac, Best Buick, BestOldsmobile, Best Cadillac, Best GMC and Best GTO. Supportfrom those attending was tremendous as evidenced by those ex-
pressing their appreciation for a greatshow and results from a survey emailed toentrants afew weeksafter theshow. Wewelcomedthe feed-back.
F o r2016, theshow willbe held onApril 29and 30 atBicenten-nial Parkin Clovis.Official show information will be postedon the POCC website (pontiacsofcen-tralcalifornia.org) by October 1. mile clay oval in no time at all. The evening asa whole was all made possible by the tireless ef-forts of our good friend Peter Murphy, whoworked extremely hard gathering extra money& awards. His entire crew of helpers shouldalso be commended for all their outstandingwork all night long.

Thunderbowl: Cont. From Page 9Reutzel said on the custom Peter MurphyClassic victory lane podium. “This track is justawesome to race at and was so much fun. It’sgreat to see so many fans come out tonight andsupport this event. I can’t thank Dennis &Teresa Roth enough for allowing me to comeout and drive this car. I definitely hope to domore in the future. Racing so hard for the winwith a guy like Jason Meyers late in the featurewas pretty cool. I couldn’t be happier rightnow.”
Reutzel, the current Lucas Oil ASCS Na-tional point leader started from seventh in the30-lapper presented by Tachi Palace and wasmaking just his second career King of the Weststart. Early on things came to a slowdownthough when current KWS point leader Do-minic Scelzi got upside down. It turned into alengthy delay as the safety crew took every pre-caution, with the youngster having some upper
back pain. When things got going again it turned into
the Jason Meyers & Kyle Hirst show up front.Meyers, a two-time World of Outlaws cham-pion, made his initial King of the West start ofthe season and looked sharp all night longaboard the Elite No. 7m machine. Hirst was insearch of his fourth consecutive King of theWest victory; while driving a tribute car forRoth Motorsports designed identical to thelast Sprint Car Peter Murphy drove. Meyers &Hirst entertained the crowd fighting hard forthe top spot, using every inch of the Thunder-bowl Raceway.
The complexion of the race changed on alap 21 restart when Reutzel slipped underHirst to claim the second position. He thenimmediately began running the high-line Hirsthad been running through one & two andquickly closed in on Meyers. After hounding
Meyers’ rear bumper for ahandful of laps he finally gotthe run off turn two he neededand rocketed into the leadwith just a few circuits left.Meyers stayed close, butReutzel drove flawlessly andcrossed the checkered flag by0.466 seconds for the victory. The win also gave Roth Mo-torsports their fourth KWSwin in a row.
It was great to have Meyersback in a 410 Sprint Car onSaturday and his runner up ef-fort paid a handsome $5,000.Hirst had another solid outingand completed the podium atthe Peter Murphy Classic, earning $3,000. Lemoore’sCarson Macedo scored fourthin the feature after setting fast
