Scioto Ribber comes out bigin Readers Choice food vote

The aroma of sizzling meats permeates the airaround 1024 Gallia St. in Portsmouth, where theMault family has been grilling up those mouth-watering ribs and steaks for the past 32 years.

The secret to Scioto Ribber's good-tasting ribsand steaks — and chicken — is, well, no secret atall. The grills are right outside near the sideentrance, where customers coming in from theparking lot — or waiting in line for a table orbooth to come empty — can see Jeff Wallace andBrandon Gray and the other grillers cooking themto perfection.

"We grill with wood only, mainly hickory, andour meat is cut fresh daily," said 37-year-old co-owner Darren Mault.

The brick building on the Gallia Street cornerwas known as Henry's Cafe when his parents,Steve and the late Cornelia Mault, bought it andstarted the Ribber in 1978.

Today it employs 20 to 25 people, countingfull- and part-time help. Jeff Wallace has been oneof the chief grillers for many years, and his par-ents, Harold and Bertie Wallace of South Shore,Ky., have worked there just about since the busi-ness began.

Hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. onMonday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday throughSaturday, and noon to 9 p.m. on Sunday.

"We can seat about 100. Saturday is our busiestday," Mault said.

He said people who come to eat the first timeusually return. Loyal customers, he said, comefrom as far away as Chillicothe and Circleville inOhio, Huntington in West Virginia, and Ashland,Vanceburg and Maysville in Kentucky.

The restaurant also offers carryout service andcaters for special get togethers.

In the Readers Choice Awards run by thePortsmouth Daily Times, the Scioto Ribber wonhands down in voting for the best ribs andsteak. Actually, 86 percent of those who votedgave the nod to the Ribber for ribs. It also camein second in the "best chicken" category.

"We've become well known throughout theregion. I was pleased to see they like our chick-en, because I think it's great," said DarrenMault.

It remains a family owned business, with hissister and brother also involved in the operation.Their father owns and operates the BreweryArcade on Second Street, known for goodspaghetti and other fine food.

As for the future at the Scioto Ribber, DarrenMault said no additions or anything new isplanned.

"We're jut going to keep on trying to pleasepeople when they order and expect good food,and continue to serve them in a friendly atmos-phere," he said.
