H ello Windjam-mers, our

season is coming to a close for boat-ing of any kind on Lake Tahoe.

We should all be thank-ful for all par-ticipants who put in their time this summer, You Know Who You Are, you guys made this summer a memorable one!

Volunteers are essential to any yacht success, year-in, year-out we rely on peo-ple's generosity to give of their time and their hard work! I'm hopeful the fu-ture of our merging yacht clubs will contin-ue to bring peo-ple together to en-joy social activities of all kinds for a long, long time.

From the bottom of my heart, I thank ALL the previous

Windjammers board members from the beginning of this Club, up to current board members, we are all a part of a

rich history that will carry on for years to come.

Lynn, this is a

special thanks to you for being a part of the Windjammers Yacht Club, thank you especially for enriching my life as well as so many oth-

ers who have re-ceived trophies that you have made by your hands! I have traveled as far as England and I've

seen your beautiful work, a trophy from Richmond Yacht Club Regatta! Your

work will be treas-ured by many for years to come, what a pleasure it is to sail with you as well as race against you and of

course, for you! I am looking forward to always seeing you on the water and to see all your years of beauti-ful hard work dis-played wherever I go where sailing tro-phies are displayed.

Hats off to all the boat owners who take on the respon-sibility of getting people out on the water safely and teach them awe-some skills that they can take with them wherever they go for the rest of their lives, if it wasn't for you, the sport of boating would come to a halt. We can use more people just like you!

Special thanks to all the crew mem-bers who jumped on the boats for the beer cans and our weekend regattas.

Thank you for be-ing supportive of this years Rear Commo-dore, signing off for 2018 Jeffrey Felicetti

The fun all began last November, a little after my 70th birthday. I received a call from

Pacific Cup PRO and Moore 24 owner John Siegel, letting me know that the Moore 24 with the inboard motor was for sale on Craig’s List, and giving me the phone num-ber. The boat, 129, was the FOAMY which was built by Fiberglass guru Alan Wirtenen as his personal boat. John knew I had been looking to purchase the boat for a long time and he baited the hook. These events gave form to my dream of sail-ing the Pacific Cup, Doublehanded, in a Moore 24. with the new boat I entered the race figuring at 70 and in what I thought was good health this, could be the last time I could sail a Moore in the Pac Cup. I texted the owner’s son and after a mysterious series of texts I found myself at the dock in Oakland handing over way too much money to a man who had lived aboard the boat for the last 15 years, in California and Mexico. Ya can’t blame the guy for his choice in boats, but he could have kept the boat a little more shipshape. The bottom on Foamy had at least 4 inches of weed over the worst case of pox I have ever seen. The diver spent hours with a hammer and chisel scraper to get the barnacles off, and the noise was audible 3 docks away. It was a discouraging sight to see the boat hauled out and set on a trailer. Foamy had to be completely gutted. I had thought that I would keep the engine, which worked well, but its age and weight made that impractical. Years of cooking smoke, diesel, and mold coated the inside of the boat with a smelly sludge. The deck and most of the fittings had to be repaired or replaced. Mike, Mary and I continued working on deck layout and interior, new bunks with lee cloths, strip and re-do the electrical system, Mark and Ian from the Moore Mas! were ex-tremely helpful, with ideas and systems they had used. Karl Robrock, sold me some instruments, and helped with the installation. Many hundreds of hours later, Foamy. was ready to sail. We ran the Pac cup inspections etc. right up to the end, having my shop in Carson City as a base and Ryc with no ATT, as our test bed, we did not have the computer linked to the gps until the delivery passage over to the morning of the start, pretty lame! Somewhere between the getting and the sailing of the boat, I got a little sick, and after a discouraging series of test it was found I have some sort of liver cancer, caused by Hep B, next time you get a blood test get the hep b screen, it’s up and coming as a disease but is still not looked for and always leads to worse outcomes The start day was a typical 11 am St Francis YC start with a blow at the line and too little sail up, at the bridge. like so many times in the past, we wallowed out the gate and changed up and Pt Diablo, flipped over to starboard and began the long cold wet starboard tack, which is the first 5 days of the race. We doused the 150 and settled in to a day of getting used to the boat on a close reach with a 90 and full main flogging occasionally. The speed was good but the vmg was better to Catalina than Hawaii. This sailing south and watching the others continue westward was a little un-

nerving. But our plan was to get south as fast as possible, with the jib up and wrung out we were sailing 222 at around 8K Second day Randy and I were tired puppies, cold, wet and a little beat up, this was the first time since the 80’s either one of us had been off shore, we both were a little sea sickness. the sea state for the whole trip was rougher than you can imagine. We thought back at the Mas! 2014 and dug up the A5 which we had seen only once be-fore in light air on our qualifier, got the gear arranged 2 guys 2 sheets, and a down haul. Hoisted that little flag and off we flew, bound for warmer weather. The next day we felt we had to be putting miles on the fleet, smug, cold but fast. All this on Star-board tack, our left arms and hands were worn out by day 4. The “A” sails on a Moore are pretty cool if you have somewhere to go on a long board, the open leach keeps the boat on its feet and you can sail fairly far down wind, but the jibing is something we have not figured how to do with ease. I look forward to use the sails on a Farallons race. I think on the reach back in the “a 5” will be a little faster than using a class kite. The sails might be a little to reachy for a Ditch run, but It would be fun to run the comparison. By the evening of the second day we felt up to a little hydrated grub and discovered we only had one spoon, so eating became shift work, at least we had lots of food. 2 days later we were still looking for warmer weather “a 5 “still up lifted to 235mag. In retrospect should have changed up to “A 1.5” Third day the wind lightens and lifts we put up a 150 and the seas are so sloppy, we close reach at around 250mag this lasts a full day, on the 14

th the wind picks up

and we put up an “A1.5 “which we leave up for the remainder of the race. we should have perhaps thought a little more about polars and where the “A” sails become a second choice. The sail was certainly fun when we made the reach from Molokai to Kaneohe, but I think if we had been using class kites the last 5 days we would have be a little closer to the rest of the fleet and perhaps would have saved a little time. Kites are so much easier to jibe than A Sails flown from a spinnaker pole. Remember you will be the lowest rater and if you stay in the water of your competitor’s your will probably finish well. The rest of the race we kept looking at the gribs and the golden rainbow promise of more wind which was south, but really the boat is a too small to be attempting big gains while sailing extra miles. Those miles are hard to make up at 8kts. We went south and the fleet to the north got a puff, and that put cancel on our plans to finish first, I remember looking at the polars before the race and not believing the boat is so slow, but “it generally” is. The Mas! Race 2014 was the true exception and it will be a while before another Moore 24 makes a 10 day transit. The race is an interesting challenge and I recommend it to all willing to punch out with the Pacific. Now is the time to start preparations. The things we learned from the race. 1. Don’t be big, the boat is too small to begin with, and two 200 pounders on the boat is a real pain, and fat and clumsiness made the steering hand off traumatic when it was blowing. Two guys, one falling asleep and the other in dream land, and a boat on the verge of crashing! 2. Really get in shape we had one day left in the bank when we arrived in Kaneohe,

Page 11: LAYLINE - SLTWYC 2018-10… · Saturday, Oc-tober 27 with details to fol-low. We also have General Member-ship Meeting & Chili Cook-Off tak-ing place on Satur-day, November 10, 2018

three hours on and off for 13 days is difficult. 3. Really research butt rash prevention, baby powder is not a solution, the thought of sitting another a day on anything was frightening. 4. Get Expedition, Iridium-Go we did not and were lost the entire race, we were ex-pecting lat lons of the fleet from the sat phone, but that never happened, we never knew the location of another boat in the race and that was a problem. 5 A Dodger is probably a good idea to keep the big splashes from below decks on the computer. 6. Check the fore hatch for leaks 7 With our mast we had no chafe issues, you don’t want to lose the spin haliard. A backup external block with a 8 Check your boom gooseneck and the area around the vang connection, we dis-covered fresh cracks on both sides of the boom second day out 9 Be sure of your rig, when the boat was planning for hours at a time you really start-ed thinking of all those little components between the hull and the backstay wire... 10. If you are to use “A”sails learn how to jibe them at home. And learn your polars. 11. find a way to control your water, from settleing to the lee side of the boat the first few days is bad 12. Have a decent digital compass and maybe something to indicate apparent wind. 13. Handles below decks in the under deck would have been a big help. 14. Something nice to sit on which drained would be nice if something like that exists. 15 You have to work it hard and never loose enthusiasm, try to avoid having the kids beat you. 16. vacuum bag your spinnakers, harbor freight has these neat bags for packing and you can put 3 chutes in one spinnaker bag for the ride on the rail the first few days and they stay perfectly dry 17 You have to piss in a jar, you probably should dump off the transom 18 Freeze dried food is ok and easy to prepare. Have 2 spoons, you can test it out before, but anything tastes good when you are hungry. 19 Buckets must be tied on before they are on deck, we felt pretty dumb watching the last bucket sink the second it hit the water. 20 Above all WEAR A HARNESS AND ALWAYS CLIP IN, THE OCEAN IS BIG. I may be the only person to sail a Moore to the islands twice, i’m not sure, 38 years was enough to forget the pain. but at 70 time compresses if I get the opportunity to do it again, I will, and look out for the Foamy. These are great little ocean racers and the boats love the trip like a dog loves a frisby Les . Lester Robertson
