I N T R O D U C T I O NOSIThe Open System Interconnection Reference Model is an abstract description for layered communications and computer network protocol design. It was developed as part of the Open System Interconnection (OSI) initiative. In its most basic form, it divides network architecture into seven layers which, from top to bottom, are the Application, Presentation, Session, Transport, Network, Data-Link, and Physical Layers. It is therefore often referred to as the OSI Seven Layer Model.

A layer is a collection of conceptually similar functions that provide services to the layer above it and receives service from the layer below it. On each layer an instance provides services to the instances at the layer above and requests service from the layer below. For example, a layer that provides error-free communications across a network provides the path needed by applications above it, while it calls the next lower layer to send and receive packets that make up the contents of the path. Conceptually two instances at one layer are connected by a horizontal protocol connection on that layer...

Layer Zero™ solutions add a new level of stability to the network by introducing an additional layer to the traditional network architecture. The OSI network model is the accepted framework for network

design and specifies seven layers to use for network planning. The bottom layer of this model is Layer One-the physical layer, which is the structured cabling itself, but what Layer One does not include is the physical support, or the infrastructure, for

the cabling. Sean Maguire brings over 25 years of industry experience to his role as Vice President, Strategic Initiatives at Convia, Inc. Sean has extensive experience in advanced building controls. He has worked with large utilities, Fortune 1000 companies and industry associations in developing high performance building energy solutions that balance the needs for energy efficiency, sustainability, occupant product iv i ty and f inancial ROI. Recent notable engagements include the new USGBC Headquarters in Washington, DC and the Empire State Building energy retrofit in NY. Prior to Convia, Sean served as Director Global Sales & Marketing at Sanmina-SCI, a $12 Billion Fortune 500 manufacturing firm. Sean led the $2.5 billion enterprise computing and storage division. Sean was also a principal and Executive Vice President for DataStarUSA, a Texas based technology services company. Sean studied at the State University of New York (SUNY), with a focus in electrical and electronics engineering.

Jim Davis

Jim Davis has worked with Fluke Networks for over 10 years and is a specialist in physical layer testing. He has been working with structured cabling for over 18 years. Jim has worked on cabling standards committees in Brazil and has given presentations at regional trade shows, manufacturers shows including the Bicsi and Netcom shows. Jim also teaches classes in field testing of structured cabling installations.

Alfred Flores

Alfred Flores, RCDD, is the global pre-terminated optical products manager for Berk-Tek, a Nexans Company. Alfred has been with Berk-Tek for six years. He previously held product management positions for DWDM optical architectures in Central and South America as well as engineering/design/training positions in the optical cabling industry. Alfred has over 15 years of experience in the telecommunications cabling industry and has presented at numerous industry forums including Bicsi (Building Industry Consulting Service International) and IWC West (International Security Conference West).

Alfred graduated with a BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and a Masters in Business Administration from the University of West Florida. Prior to joining Berk-Tek, Alfred held product marketing and engineering positions with Cisco, Corning Cable Systems, and Fiber Systems International. He served ten years in the United States Navy as an officer and an aviator.

The OSI program grew out of a need for international networking standards and is designed to (consistently) facilitate communication between hardware and software systems despite

differences in underlying architectures. The OSI 7 layers model has clear characteristics. Layers 7 through 4 deal with end to end communications between data source and destinations. Layers 3 to 1 deal with communications between network devices.

On the other hand, the seven layers of the OSI model can be divided into two groups: upper layers (layers 7, 6 & 5) and lower layers (layers 4, 3, 2, 1). The upper layers of the OSI model deal with application issues and generally are implemented only in software. The highest layer, the application layer, is closest to the end user. The lower layers of the OSI model handle data

transport issues. The physical layer and the data link layer are implemented in hardware and software. The lowest layer, the physical layer, is closest to the physical network medium and is responsible for placing data on the medium. The physical layer is defined as the cable or physical medium itself, e.g., thinnet, thicknet, unshielded twisted pairs, fiber optic cable. However, Layer 1 does not include Pathways or Physical Support - racks, cabinets, cable trays, and cable management.

Brian Ensign

Brian is a Director for Legrand/Ortronics responsible for the training and technology activities focused on delivering training, solutions, and value added initiatives to our customers and the industry. Brian is an active member of Bicsi, TIA TR42, IEEE 802.3 Technical Committees and was the vice-chair of the TIA Category 6 Consortium. Brian is the current Bicsi Northeast Region Director and serves on the Bicsi Board of Directors.

In his former position at ITS/ETL Testing Services, he was instrumental in the creation of ETL Verification Programs.

Brian is currently a Bicsi Convention speaker and regularly conducts industry seminars. Brian graduated from the State University of New York (SUNY) Institute of Technology at Utica with a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Electrical Engineering Technology

Dallas Kellerman

Dallas Kellerman, Product Line Manager of WMCT (Wire Mesh Cable Tray) for Legrand/ Cablofil has worked with cable management systems the past 13 of his 22 years in the electrical industry. During this time Dallas has designed Cable Tray systems, Electrical Metering devices, and currently serves as Co-chair of NEMA sub-committees 05CTI. Dallas also trains personnel of WMCT products and installations, and has served on several ANSI committees. Prior to his Cable Tray industry involvement he designed High Voltage Switchgear.

Dallas Kellerman graduated from Rock Valley College with a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Industrial Engineering.

Today’s IT managers are facing demands for better processing performance, improved access and lower latency, while also dealing with increased cost pressure from shrinking IT budgets. At the same time, their responsibilities are expanding to include the growing number of applications now running over an IP network, such as Voice over IP, security, and building automation.

Legrand/Ortronics will help address these concerns by presenting a new look at today’s accepted framework for network design – the ISO/OSI (Open System Interconnection) model, a seven layer reference model that standardizes communication networks. The ISO/OSI model defines seven network layers, the most basic of which is Layer 1 – the Physical Layer. The physical layer is defined as the cabling or physical medium itself, e.g., thinnet, thicknet, unshielded twisted pairs. However, it does not include the physical SUPPORT, or the infrastructure, for the cabling. This seminar provides a new perspective to the concept of networking by establishing “Layer 0” of the OSI model and defining it as the Infrastructure Layer, thus adding a new level of stability to the network.

This seminar will provide a high level overview of key applications such as data center or LAN environments where best practices in pathway and physical support design can maximize network performance. You’ll learn how a well designed Layer Zero™ foundation can reduce power consumption and cooling costs, reduce the risk of equipment failure, and enhance overall system performance.

Beni Blell

Beni Blell, RCDD, is the director of business development for North and Central America, and is responsible for sales and marketing activities for the entire line of Nexans cables and cabling systems in Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. Blell has been with Nexans for seven years and previously held the position of fiber optic product business manager for Nexans Berk-Tek. Blell has over 15 years of experience in the telecommunications cabling industry and has authored several technical papers and presented at numerous industry forums including IWCS (International Wire and Cable Symposium), NCTA (National Cable Television Association), and COMDEX (now INTEROP). Blell graduated with a BS in Aerospace Engineering and a Masters in Engineering from North Carolina State University. Prior to joining Nexans, Blell held product development, applications and systems engineering, and market development positions with other fiber optic cablers including Corning Cable Systems, CommScope, and Sumitomo Electric.

Industry Standards UpdateIndustry standards bodies govern the technology roadmap for the Information Technology Systems (ITS) cabling and physical support infrastructure. The majority of the industry specifications, training, and design are based on these industry standards, which include TIA, IEEE, ISO, Bicsi, and others. Legrand/Ortronics and Berk-Tek are active members of these industry standards bodies with proactive participation and involvement.

This session will give you an overview of the current status of the critical standards within these bodies and give you insight to what the future holds. This update will include, IEEE 802.3, TIA-568-C, TIA-942, TIA 569, TIA 606, TIA 607, ISO 11801, Bicsi-001, CSI Division 27, and others. Are you curious as to the future of fiber and copper to support 40/100 Gigabit Ethernet? What is beyond that? What is actually stated in the standards? Your participation in this session will give you insight into where the standards are going in order to lead our industry.

Jay Paul Myers

Jay Paul Myers, RCDD, is a Training Specialist for Legrand/Ortronics, and has been in the communications cabling industry for over 30 years. He has served as the Editor of the TR-42.6 committee which produced the ANSI/TIA/EIA-606-A Administration Standard for Commercial Telecommunications Infrastructure and as Secretary of TR-42.8, the TIA/EIA-568 Optical Fiber committee. He has served as presenter at Bicsi Conferences and has written articles for various industry publications. Jay can be reached at [email protected]. In keeping with Legrand’s commitment to sustainable practices, this presentation was composed entirely of recycled bits.

A comprehensive review of the migration of transmission speeds to 10 Gbps and beyond and how this affects the structured cabling infrastructure required to support your data center, campus, building backbone, and horizontal cabling. The latest in standards and technology available for both copper and fiber type transmission media will be reviewed and the NetClear structured cabling solutions presented. The goal of the presentation is to enable network designers to implement an infrastructure with the highest level of reliability that will provide a migration path for projected application needs well into the future.

Certification of the cabling infrastructure is essential to assure the performance of the physical layer. Certifying the performance of applications assures the performance of the logical layer of the network. Fluke Networks presentation will look at techniques to perform both active and passive tests on the network.

Tim Place

Tim Place has his undergraduate degree from Greenville College (1985) with a BA/BS in Physics. He received his MBA in Marketing from Webster University in 1990. He has worked for Arch Minerals Corporation, Tyco Corporation, United States Gypsum Corp, GS Metals Corp and is the founder and CEO of Cablofil, Inc.. In his career he has worked as a Mining Engineer, Customer Service Manager, Product Engineer, Marketing Manager, General Manager as well as the President of Legrand/ Cablofil. He is responsible for the introduction of Welded Wire Mesh Cable Tray, Cablofil, into the American markets, setting the standard for the industry.

Energy Conservation and the preservation of our Planet have become vital for humanity, and in the heart of this endeavor is CONVIA. This solution developed by Herman Miller and Legrand is the most advanced and innovative form of energy control and monitoring for the workspace. But none of this is possible if the basic infrastructure or Layer Zero™ is not prepared to accommodate this technology.
