Publishers of two of Los Angeles’ most historic black news- papers — Danny Bakewell Sr., pub- lisher of the Los Angeles Sentinel, and Melanie Polk, publisher of the L.A. Watts Times — announced they are in the final stage of an exclusive negotiation for Bakewell Media to purchase the L.A. Watts Times. Bakewell, publisher and chair- man of Bakewell Media, said, “I am proud and honored that Melanie chose me and my family to continue the great legacy of the Watts Times, its founders and her parents. We thank and applaud her for the great work she has done in making this newspaper one of black L.A.’s finest.” Polk said, “The L.A. Watts Times has been a part of my life since I was very young, and while it is bittersweet for me to move on, it has been my commitment to see that the L.A. Watts Times lives on. Long before Danny Bakewell pur- chased the Los Angeles Sentinel, he demonstrated his love and commit- ment for the black press. “Having witnessed and bene- fited from his work on our behalf, I am confident he will carry the L.A. Watts Times to new heights for our community and advertisers alike.” Former Assembly Speaker Karen Bass enjoyed a sweeping victory June 8 in her primary run for the 33rd District House of Representatives seat. In an overwhelming sweep, Bass led the poles by more than 85 percent against opponents Felton Newell, Nick Juan Mostert and Morris F. Griffin, aka “Big Money Griff.” The district includes the neigh- borhoods of Baldwin Hills, Ladera Heights, Mid-Wilshire, View Park and Windsor Hills, and is largely Democratic. If Bass beats Republican oppo- nent James L. Andion in November, San Francisco prosecutor Kamala Harris and Holly J. Mitchell were big winners on the Democratic tick- et in the June 8 primary election. Harris has just one more hurdle in her bid to become California’s first African American attorney gen- eral. She captured 33.1 percent of votes statewide and 29.9 percent of the Los Angeles County vote to out- distance former L.A. City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo for the Dem- ocratic nomination. She will face L.A. District Attorney Steve Cooley in November, who won the Re- publican nomination. Crystal Stairs CEO Holly J. Mitchell, hand picked by former California Assembly Speaker Karen Bass to replace her in the assembly for the 47th District Assembly seat, overcame competi- tion from California Democratic Party secretary Reggie Jones- Sawyer to win the 47th District seat nomination. Mitchell, who received nearly 44 percent of votes, will take on Republican win- ner Lady Cage Barille. In the state race for governor, Attorney General Jerry Brown easily won as the top Democrat with 84.1 percent of votes statewide, while for- mer eBay CEO Meg Whitman won on the Republican side with roughly 64 percent of votes. L.A. City Councilwoman Jan- ice Hahn lost her bid to become lieu- tenant governor to San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom. Despite win- ning 53 percent of the vote in L.A. County, Hahn could only manage 34.2 percent of the statewide vote. Newsom, who garnered 54.7 percent of votes, will face Republican Abel Maldonado, who captured 43.3 per- cent on the Republican side. In Congress, incumbent Laura Richardson handily defeated Peter Mathews, Lee Davis and Terrance Ponchak to capture the Democratic nod for the 37th congressional dis- trict. She received nearly 68 per- cent of votes. Residents in the city of Inglewood will have to wait until August before they will see a new mayor. First District Councilman Danny Tabor and former Police Chief James Butts were neck-and- neck when the county clerk finished counting in the wee hours of June 9. Only 243 votes separated Tabor and Butts. Tabor had roughly 26.4 per- cent of votes, while Butts had about 23.7 percent. The two must battle it out in an August runoff. Running unopposed for Dem- ocratic nominations in the June 8 primary election were Maxine Waters (35th District-U.S. Con- gress); Jerome Horton (4th District- State Board of Equalization); Curren Price (26th District-California State Senate); Mike Davis (48th District- California Assembly); Steve Brad- ford (51st District-California As- sembly); Isadore Hall (52nd Dis- trict-California Assembly); and Warren Furutani (55th District- California Assembly). www.lawattstimes.com www.lawattstimes.com Vol. XXX, No. 1183 June 10, 2010 SERVING LOS ANGELES COUNTY WITH NEWS YOU CAN USE WASHINGTON (AP) — After winning the 2010 Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, Mo’Nique noted that she was wearing a royal blue dress, along with a gardenia in her hair, because that’s what Hattie McDaniel wore 70 years earlier when she became the first African American to receive an Academy Award. “Ms. Hattie McDaniel, I feel you all over me, and it’s about time that the world feels you all over them,” said Mo’Nique, the actress and comedienne who is producing a film biography about McDaniel. As colleges and universitiesacross the country celebrated theirstudents’ accomplishments thiscommencement season, the newsabout the top student at theUniversity of Notre Dame wasespecially inspiring for me.

Twenty-one-year-old KatieWashington from Gary, Ind., madehistory as Notre Dame’s first blackvaledictorian. Katie was a biologi-cal sciences major with a minor inCatholic social teaching whoearned a perfect 4.0 grade pointaverage. She is planning to pursuea joint M.D./Ph.D. next at JohnsHopkins University, and she saidshe was “humbled” and “in a modeof gratitude and thanksgiving” bybeing named valedictorian. In aculture filled with superficialcelebrities, beautiful, brilliant,hard-working young people likeWashington are real role modelsand ought to be on the cover of ourmagazines. They’re who our chil-dren should aspire to be.

Washington’s work ethic andpassion for medicine were instilledin her by caring parents. Her fatheris a doctor and her mother is anurse, and an older brother and sis-ter have chosen medical careerstoo. In interviews, Washingtonremembered going to her father’soffice after school, where shewould sit and do her homeworkand later had the chance to accom-pany him as he visited patients.

She also thanked teachers andother adult mentors who encour-aged her over the years, saying, “Ihave had so much support, people

who really wanted to see that Ireached my full potential. They allhad my best interest at heart.”Meanwhile, her proud parents andteachers remembered how disci-plined she was and how hard shealways worked.

As an undergraduate, Wash-ington conducted research on lungcancer and spent a year and a halfstudying the mosquito that carriesdengue and yellow fever. She didsome of her research in partnershipwith Notre Dame’s Haiti programand helped show how humanhabits in Haiti contribute to infec-tious mosquitoes’ spread. Her stud-ies outside the lab included servingas student coordinator of theCenter for Social Concerns’ “Livesin the Balance: Youth Violence andSociety” seminar.

In her graduation speech, shespoke of the shock that occurredwhen she visited a juvenile re-entryprogram as part of that seminar andmet an old childhood friend whowas trying to turn his life aroundafter being involved in the juvenilejustice system. Although they hadgrown up in the same neighbor-hood, she was moved by how dif-ferently their lives had turned outso far.

Washington also served as astudent director of the school’sgospel choir and a mentor and tutorfor girls at a local high schoolwhere she was able to give backsome of the support and encour-agement she had received.

In her graduation speech,Washington also spoke to fellowstudents about the importance of

being able tomove on “afterthe app lausestops” — and ofbeing self-moti-vated to keepmoving forwardto use their giftsand serve oth-ers. She is al-ready living outthis lesson with her own life.

Too often, we read headlinesabout young people only when theyhave gotten into trouble. But we allneed to seek out and hold up youngpeople like Washington who areworking hard, doing the right thing, and excelling.

Just as Washington was men-tored by adults in her home, school, church and community, wecan all do our part to encourageyoung people in our circles.

Who knows when we will bementoring the next brilliant scien-tist or college valedictorian? Andwho knows how far Washingtonwill go now and what medicalbreakthroughs or cures she willwork on over her lifetime?

Congratulations, Katie Wash-ington! We are so proud of you.

When prosecutors indict policeofficers for the murder of unarmedcivilians, they realize that colossalpitfalls may impede a conviction, nomatter how cut-and-dried the evi-dence.

The pitfalls are certainly therein the case of former BART policeofficer Johannes Mehserle. Mehserleis charged in the (videotaped) NewYear’s Day 2009 killing of OscarGrant, a young African American,on a Bay Area Rapid Transit stationplatform.

Compelling video footageshows an unarmed and handcuffedGrant face down on the BART plat-form. Grant does not appear to beresisting the officers. And numerouswitnesses confirmed that Grantposed no threat to the officers.

BART officials offered theweak explanation that Mehserle mis-takenly thought that he was reachingfor his Taser gun. If Mehserle hadbeen a civilian and committed mur-der with this overwhelming amountof witness testimony and videofootage, his implausible explanationfor the deadly shooting would neverhave been taken seriously. Instead,

he would have been swiftly convict-ed and imprisoned.

But that didn’t happen. Meh-serle’s a cop. That’s the first pitfall.

There have been hundreds ofcivilians killed by police officers inCalifornia in the past decade.Although, in many of the killings, the civilians gunned down wereunarmed and not in the process ofcommitting a crime, no officer hasbeen charged with murder.

Mehserle is the first in the pasttwo decades to be charged. The sec-ond pitfall to convicting copscharged with deadly force is the useof video footage.

Defense attorneys who repre-sent cops charged in suspicious fatalshootings have made the undermin-ing of videotaped evidence into ascience. In a number of these highlycharged cases nationwide, skilleddefense attorneys have managed towin acquittals. They tell jurors thatthe videos are grainy and fuzzy, thesound and quality are poor, the tapeshave missing pieces, and that theyomit the scenes which show whatprovoked the officer to use force.

They pound home that videos

can be interpreted in many differentways. Defense attorneys also ques-tion the honesty, motives and back-ground of those who videotape suchincidents.

They will do the same in theGrant killing.

The next pitfall is the investiga-tion. Police officials and prosecutorsmove at a deliberately glacial pace incompiling evidence, witness testi-mony and officer statements.

The time delay works to theofficer’s advantage. It ensures thathis version of why officers usedforce lines up with the version givenby other officers present. Mehserle’squick resignation after the Grantshooting further blurred matters. Heevaded an internal investigation.

Defense attorneys wasted notime in asking for and gettingMehserle’s trial moved out of theBay Area. The aim, of course, was toget the most cooperative jury, judgeand trial surroundings. Defenseattorneys may have gotten all threewhen the trial was moved to LosAngeles.

It’s a city where few are famil-iar with the case in detail and no

African Americans will serve onthe jury. Also, a judge believed tohave shown excessive leniencytoward LAPD officers in theRampart scandal has been assignedto the case.

The key, though, is the jury inpolice misconduct trials. Policedefense attorneys try to get asmany middle-class whites on pan-els as possible.

The presumption is that theyare much more likely to believe thetestimony of police and prosecu-tion witnesses than black or youngwitnesses, defendants or even thevictims themselves. This is nosmall point.

The great majority of deadlyforce killings are of young AfricanAmericans or Latinos. The witnessesgenerally are young and of color. That’s the case in the Grant killing.Mehserle’s attorneys scored anotherlegal coup in successfully barringany mention by prosecutors of hisdocumented past history of violenceand provocative acts.

The greatest pitfall is the mud-dled standard of what is or isn’tacceptable use of force. It oftencomes down to a judgment call by theofficer. In the Rodney King beatingcase in 1992, defense attorneys

turned the tables and painted King asthe aggressor, claiming that the levelof force used against him was justi-fied. In the Sean Bell killing in NewYork City in 2007, attorneys claimedthat Bell and his companions weretrying to run them down, causing offi-cers to fear for their lives. Mehserle’sattorneys almost certainly will use thesame playbook with Grant.

These are the daunting pitfallsto convicting Mehserle. But theseare pitfalls that a diligent and deter-mined prosecution must overcome.

NEW YORK (AP) — With thearrival of summer, many small busi-nesses take on interns. These youngpeople are looking for experienceand, in some cases, school credits.Companies appreciate the extrahelp, particularly when they’re notable to hire.

But many owners find that hir-ing an intern isn’t like hiring a tem-porary employee. Interns often havelittle or no work history, and someneed guidance on how to behave inthe working world.

An owner who’s busy runninga company might be surprised tofind he or she also needs to becomea boss/parent/teacher to an intern. Itcan be time consuming, but alsorewarding.

Here are some of the issuesowners need to consider when tak-ing on an intern:

The Care and Training of Interns

Many small-business ownersanxious to get some extra help canmake the mistake of assuming thatan intern is like any other worker. It’s not quite that simple. Interns aresupposed to be having a learningexperience, not giving a companyanother warm body.

These days, some interns are

people who have lost jobs or whograduated from college a few yearsago. They’re likely looking to builda resume and get a chance at a futurehire. But many others are college oreven high school students who areusing internships as a way to getcourse credit.

Because they are supposed tobe learning, interns may need moresupervision than an owner expects.

“They need a lot of hand-hold-ing, and that hand-holding actuallytakes you away from the work that asmall business requires you to do,”said Agnes Huff, CEO of LosAngeles-based Agnes Huff Com-munications Group LLC.

Some companies assign staff-ers to help mentor interns and workclosely with them.

Leslie Saunders found outyears ago how important it is tosupervise interns. One intern hired ather Tampa, Fla., employee benefitsbrokerage was asked to do filing. She started filing everything underclients’ first names.

“We have many Johns, manyThomases, many Christophers. Shewas doing it for several weeksbefore anybody really noticed,”recalled Saunders, president ofLeslie Saunders Insurance AgencyInc.

L.A. County Boycotts ArizonaOver Immigration Law

(AP) — Los Angeles Countyon June 1 became the latest govern-ment body to boycott Arizona toprotest the state’s tough new lawtargeting illegal immigration.

After a heated debate, the coun-ty’s board of supervisors voted 3-2 toban new contracts with Arizona-basedcompanies and review those thatcould be canceled. The county hasmore than $26 million in contractswith Arizona companies this year.

Several California cities, in-cluding Los Angeles, Oakland andSan Francisco, have passed similarmeasures.

The Arizona law, set to gointo effect July 29, requirespolice enforcing another law toquestion people about theirimmigration status if there is rea-son to suspect they are in thecountry illegally.

Supervisor Gloria Molinasaid the law “goes too far.”

“I am sworn as an L.A.County supervisor to uphold theConstitution. All I can say is that Ibelieve that Arizona’s law isunconstitutional,” she said.

Critics of the law also say itunfairly targets Hispanics andcould lead to racial profiling.Proponents insist racial profilingwill not be tolerated.

COMMUNITY MEETINGS, FORUMS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Los Angeles’ Transit PushGets a Boost from Feds

(AP) — An effort to speed upconstruction of the subway to the seain Los Angeles has received a boostfrom the Obama administration.

Sen. Barbara Boxer said June 4that the Federal Transit Administrationhas agreed to accelerate review of the9-mile segment. That will help get theproject shovel-ready for when officialssecure funding for it.

Boxer said she also received aletter from Transportation SecretaryRay LaHood supporting a local planto accelerate construction of a dozentransit projects by borrowing fromthe federal government.

In 2008, Los Angeles Countyvoters agreed to increase the sales taxto raise about $40 billion for trans-portation improvements over a 30-year period. Under the “30/10” plan, local officials propose completingthose projects in 10 years by borrow-ing from Washington.

Judge Denies Bid to StopClosure of L.A. Pot Shops

(AP) — A judge has decidedagainst coming to the aid of medicalmarijuana dispensaries threatened withclosure under a new city ordinance.

Superior Court Judge JamesChalfant rejected a bid June 4 for atemporary restraining order thatwould prevent officials from enforc-ing the law.

A group of 12 patients has suedthe city, saying the ordinance wasunconstitutional because it wouldprohibit access to their medicine.More than 400 pot dispensaries wereto be shut down beginning June 7,when the law went into effect.

Another 130 have six monthsto meet stringent guidelines toremain open.

The shops cropped up acrossLos Angeles in recent years as theCity Council wrestled with draftingan ordinance.

THE STATE

California Bill WouldIncrease Rules on Rifles

SACRAMENTO (AP) — Law-makers in the California Assembly arebattling over a gun control bill that wouldextend the same reporting requirementsand regulations that govern hand guns torifles and other long guns.

On June 3, the measure, AB1810, passed the Assembly on a 43-10 vote. It now moves to theSenate. Assemblyman Mike Feuer,D-Los Angeles, sponsored the bill, saying it would help law enforce-ment investigate gun crimes.Opponents argue the Legislature issystematically taking away their

constitutional rights under theSecond Amendment.

Under current law, records ofhandgun transfers are kept in a data-base that law enforcement officers canaccess to help solve crimes. The billwould require that sales of rifles andshotguns are recorded in the same way.

Republicans said that chippingaway at the rights of gun ownersaffects innocent people. Opponentsalso said that increasing regulation onlong guns would do nothing to keepfirearms out of the hands of criminalswho often obtain them illegally.

Feuer countered that the numberof handguns confiscated by lawenforcement for crimes was nearlyequal to the number of rifles andshotguns taken from criminals.

Marcus Miller is at the top ofhis game.

His name is synonymous with“incredible jazz.”

One of the hottest jazz artistson the circuit, Miller is set to bringhis unique jazz flavorings, via hisbass guitar, to the Hollywood Bowlthis weekend as part of the 32ndPlayboy Jazz Festival, set for June12 and 13. He’ll be part of an eliteassemblage of jazz artists on tap toheat up the bowl’s stage for its annu-al musical soiree.

When you talk to Miller, it’sclear he loves what he does. Whilehe has “fun” performing, he’s keen-ly serious about his music.

When he speaks about music, hispassion is palpable and unmistakable.

The Grammy Award-winningartist has worked with hundreds ofartists including, Aretha Franklin,Bill Withers, Mariah Carey, RobertaFlack and LL Cool J.

This week, the L.A. Watts Timescaught up with the venerable musi-cian, who is on the road about fivemonths out of the year, to ask whatfans can expect during his perform-ance at the Playboy Jazz Festival andwhat’s next on his agenda.

LAWT: There are numerousjazz festivals you can play everyyear. Why did you choose to playthe Playboy Jazz Festival, and whatmakes it so special?

MM: It has a unique vibe atPlayboy. The people really come toparty. At a lot of festivals, some peo-ple are quiet and focus on music. Asa musician it’s a real challenge. Ifyou don’t come with it, they willignore you. It’s like a block party.

LAWT: What songs will beincluded in your set?

MM: I’m doing a tribute called‘Tutu’ for Miles Davis. I composedit back in the ’80s. It’s been 25 yearssince that album. Christian Scottwill also be playing in the band. Heis incredible. We are revisiting that.

LAWT: How many festivalsdo you play in a year?

MM: About 30. They’ve gotfestivals in Korea, Japan, SouthAmerica, the U.S., all throughEurope.

LAWT: How do you describeyour music?

MM: My music is a mixture ofjazz, funk and hip-hop. It’s a reflec-tion of New York and the neighbor-hood where I grew up.

LAWT: Describe jazz.MM: It’s what happened when

African musicians got a hold ofEuropean instruments. They playedthem but put a flip on it. It’s like theysaid, ‘I like this song, but I want toput my flavor to it.’ The main thingthat makes it exciting is improvisa-tion. We know how it’s going to startand end, but as musicians we leavethe middle open.

LAWT: What makes jazz pure?MM: I have a different attitude

than some cats. For them it’s purejazz if it was played between 1940through ’60. For me, it’s the improv-isation and coming up with newstuff. The legends like CharlieParker and Coltrane, they didn’t

play like the guys before them. Theyfound something new. It’s the spiritof innovation.

LAWT: If you couldn’t playmusic …

MM: I’d feel like someonetook my voice. When I hear myselfplay the bass, that’s the real me.

LAWT: What does music dofor you?

MM: Everybody wants toexpress themselves and feel likethey’re being heard. I feel like I’mbeing heard.

LAWT: How has your musicchanged from the beginning to now?

MM: I don’t play all the notesnow. I try to find the right notes, theones that are the most meaningful.

LAWT: It’s Black MusicMonth. What’s the best way to cele-brate?

MM: Listen to all the greatswho came before us. Then, go buysome music.

LAWT: The ultimate jam ses-sion — who is there? Your choicescan be any artist, alive or dead.

MM: Drummer John ‘Jabo’Starks, Bootsy Collins is on bass.Stevie Wonder is on keyboards.Prince is going to play the guitar. With the vocals I’d have ChakaKhan, Luther Vandross and MichaelJackson. Coltrane is on sax, trumpetis Miles Davis. When Bootsy getstired, I’m going to throw in LarryGraham. Then when his fingers starthurting, I’m going to jump in thereand do my thing. Jimi Hendrix isgoing to come do a solo too. He’ll tellPrince, ‘This is how you do it, youngman.’ Louis Armstrong is going tocome out of no where and just telleverybody to ‘break it down.’ He’llshow them how it’s done.

LAWT: What’s up next foryou?

MM: We’re starting the tour. We’ll be on the East Coast. Then,we’ll be in France, Germany andItaly. Then I’ll start working on mynext CD in August.

LAWT: Do you have advicefor newcomers?

MM: Better love what you do.Do your best to figure out what youlove.

LAWT: When you’re not play-ing music, what do you do to winddown?

MM: Basketball. I’m good.I’m a shooting guard. I’m kind ofKobe-esque (laughter). If you‘re notgoing to make me prove it, I’m goingto say it.

Others set to play on June 12

Department Warns AboutDisposal of Skin-LighteningCreams Containing Mercury

SACRAMENTO (CaliforniaEnvironmental Protection Agency)— The California Department ofToxic Substances Control advisesthe public that anyone possessingdangerous face cream products sus-pected to contain mercury shoulddispose of them at a local householdhazardous waste facility.

The California Department ofPublic Health recently issued ahealth alert about those skin-light-ening face creams from Mexico andother countries that contain enoughmercury to cause health problems.

These products are used tolighten skin color, fade freckles andage spots, remove wrinkles andtreat acne. Many of these productsare in unlabeled containers or have

containers that say “mercury,”“mercurio” or “calomel” (mercur-ous chloride) on the label.

Mercury can be highly toxic tohumans. It can cause nerve damagelike tremors, memory loss, weightloss and fatigue. Mercury can alsolead to kidney failure.

Products containing mercury, like face creams, should be disposedof at a local household hazardouswaste facility to keep mercury fromleaching into groundwater from aland fill. Disposing of hazardouswaste properly helps to reduce theamount of mercury and other toxicmetals in the environment.

Cancer PreventionGuidelines for Summer

NEW YORK, N.Y. (Skin Can-cer Foundation) — The Skin Can-cer Foundation recommends thefollowing tips for preventing skincancer, the most common form ofcancer in the United States, with 3.5million cases in more than 2 millionpeople diagnosed annually, includ-

ing people of color:1. Seek the shade, especially

between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. whenthe sun is strongest.

2. Use a sunscreen with an SPFof 15 or higher daily. Use SPF 30when spending extended time out-doors. For effective UVA protec-tion, select products that also con-tain some combination of avoben-zone, oxybenzone, mexoryl, zincoxide and titanium dioxide.

3. Apply 1 ounce (2 table-spoons) of sunscreen to all exposedareas, 30 minutes before going out-side. Reapply every two hours orimmediately after swimming orexcessive sweating. This means thata 6-ounce bottle of sunscreen offerstwo full days of sun protection forprolonged outdoor activity.

4. Cover up with clothing, in-cluding a broad-brimmed hat andUV-blocking sunglasses. Weardensely woven and bright- or dark-colored fabrics, which offer the bestdefense. The more skin you cover, the better, so choose long sleevesand long pants whenever possible.

5. Keep newborns out of thesun. Sunscreens should be used onbabies over the age of six months.Children are extremely vulnerableto ultraviolet radiation.

6. Examine your skin fromhead to toe every month. If younotice any change in an existing moleor discover a new one that looks sus-picious, see a physician immediately.

THE PULSE

State University in California.“Dodson talked about it as some-thing we, as African American stu-dents, could aspire to.”

Sometime after Butler graduat-ed, though, McDaniel’s award van-ished. Gone, as it were, with the wind.

Was it taken by student protest-ers to repudiate the subservience ofMcDaniel’s Mammy? The Wiki-pedia entry on McDaniel states asfact that her Oscar “disappeared dur-ing racial unrest (at Howard) in thelate 1960s.” (One version of thatpopular theory has students tossingthe award into the Potomac.)

Other theories abound: Maybe theplaque was moved for safekeeping dur-ing a period of black-power protests andnever made it back to its display case. Aprofessor might have walked away withit. Perhaps it was stolen, then sold to acollector. Any of this could have hap-pened in 1968. Or was it 1973?

“Sometime in the early ’70s — Ican’t recall the exact date — I wasback on campus and went into thegreenroom, and it wasn’t there,” saysDonal Leace, a professional singerand former Howard student whoremembers holding McDaniel’s Oscarin his hands sometime in the ’60s.

Leace is convinced that theaward — among the most valuableand historically significant artifactsin African American film history —was stolen. By whom, he has no idea.

“It’s odd; these things usuallyget out,” he says. “Somebody fessesup to having seen it.”

“Nobody knows when it wentmissing — that’s partly why nobodyknows where it might be,” saysLeslie Unger, spokeswoman for theAcademy of Motion Picture Arts andSciences.

Five years ago, Joseph Selmon,Howard’s theater chairman, askedthe academy to issue a replacementOscar for McDaniel. Citing a long-

standing policy, the academy saidno, sending instead a framed photoof McDaniel and a sheet of com-memorative McDaniel postagestamps.

“We do not create replacementsfor heirs or whomever may havecome into possession of an awardfollowing the winner’s death,”Unger explains.

Interest in McDaniel has beenrising. The U.S. Postal Service issueda stamp in her honor in 2006, and amusical, “Hattie . . . What I Need Youto Know,” has played off-Broadway.Producer Re’Shaun Frear is also peti-tioning for a replacement award.

“I’m trying to get the AfricanAmerican film community behind itso the academy has no choice,” hesays.

Mo’Nique’s planned biopiccomes as scholars increasingly arguethat there was more to the pioneeringactress than Mammy — and that herbest-known performance was atypi-cally forceful for a black female in1930s Hollywood, anyway.

“Through Mammy, she wasoffering a thickly veiled critiqueagainst stereotypes,” says Jill Watts,a history professor at CaliforniaState University at San Marcos andauthor of “Hattie McDaniel: BlackAmbition, White Hollywood.” “Peo-ple have been coming around to thatin the last 10 to 15 years.”

In the 1960s, though, as theCivil Rights Movement soared andsocial turbulence swept across How-ard’s campus, many students viewedMcDaniel with disdain.

“I was too radical to trulyappreciate the genius of Ms.McDaniel,” says writer PearlCleage, who studied at Howard in themid-’60s. “I was conditioned to beangry because she won the award forplaying Mammy. Politics trumped theart of her amazing performance.”

Vera J. Katz, a former dramaprofessor, recalls the day ButterflyMcQueen, who also played a servantin “Gone With the Wind,” came to

campus and was booed by students:“They felt she was a Thomasina —an Uncle Tom. They were upset withher for playing a sweet, stupid ser-vant.”

Could the same students whobooed McQueen have takenMcDaniel’s Oscar in protest?

“There were a lot of things — alot — that ended up being stolen or‘went missing,’because there was anattitude to try to get rid of the past,”says Geoffrey Newman, a Howardalumnus and theater chairman whois now a dean at Montclair StateUniversity in New Jersey. Newmanis certain the Oscar “was stolen byan irate student who wanted to eraseHattie McDaniel.”

Gregory, the Hollywood collec-tor, thinks the award, which he val-ues at more than $550,000, wasthrown into the Potomac in a finalact of erasure.

“I spoke to a guy who told me itwas heaved into the river — he wasthere,” Gregory says, though he can-not recall his informant’s name.“Why would you do that? It’s likeheaving a diamond ring into the riverbecause you’re mad at somebody.”

That story “makes for an inter-esting legend, but I would have tothink that is not even remotely true,”says Richard Wesley, who studied atHoward in the ’60s and now teachesat New York University’s TischSchool of the Arts. Few students out-side the drama department knewHoward had the Oscar, Wesley says.

“And certainly no drama stu-dent at Howard would have donesomething as disrespectful as that, even if we were still willing to fussabout the symbolism of Mammy.”

He has another theory: “I ampretty certain that Owen Dodsontook the Oscar with him. He wasvery protective of his artifacts.”

But Dodson didn’t have theOscar when he died in New York in1983, according to James Hatch, author of “Sorrow Is the OnlyFaithful One: The Life of Owen

Dodson” and literary executor ofDodson’s estate. He “never saw atany time an Academy Award inOwen’s apartment” and “neverheard him talk about it.”

Butler, the San Jose State pro-fessor, has a theory involving a dif-ferent Howard instructor.

“I’ve heard on more than oneoccasion that it was taken by MikeMalone,” Butler says. “I heard froma couple of former students that theyhad seen the award in Mike’s apart-ment” in Cleveland, where Malonebecame artistic director of theKaramu House theater company.

But Reggie Kelly, who was aMalone protégé at Karamu House, says he never saw the artifact duringfrequent visits to Malone’s apart-ment and that Malone, who died in2006, “never mentioned anythingabout Hattie McDaniel or theaward.”

Selmon has settled on yetanother narrative: The award wasput into storage, perhaps in anunmarked or mismarked box. Heremains optimistic it will be found.Eventually.

It’s hardly uncommon forthings — important things — to bemisplaced at large universities, including Howard.

Consider the case of Bill“Bojangles” Robinson. For years, abronzed pair of the great tap-dancer’s shoes sat in the same dis-play case that held McDaniel’sOscar. Then, the shoes vanished.

“Everybody thought they weregone,” Selmon says. “But they wereactually just in a box somewhere.”

The bronzed shoes are now inthe same locked library storage roomwhere a Howard employee recentlydiscovered more McDaniel material.

But excitement quickly evapo-rated. The find was not the AcademyAward, but an old photo ofMcDaniel. In a file cabinet nearby, there was also this: An old memowith an ageless title: “Where IsHattie McDaniel’s Oscar?”

“She was an honors student, butit never occurred to her” that filingwas done by last name, Saunderssaid.

The investment in an intern canpay off well for a company.Rothman and many other ownershave hired some of their interns asfull-time staffers.

“You can feel the rewards fairlyquickly if you’re doing it right,” saidAnna Jerden, an account supervisorat Agnes Huff Communications.

But Jerden also counsels own-ers to be a patient teacher, and givean intern time to adjust to working.

“When you’re bringing insomeone who doesn’t know thebusiness, the first thing that happensto them is they get totally over-whelmed,” she said.

Being A Boss/Parent to an Intern

Some interns may never haveworked before, or they had retailjobs or waited tables. They may haveno idea how to behave or dress foran office setting. So owners mayfind themselves giving interns a fewlife lessons.

Katherine Rothman, CEO ofKMR Communications Inc. in NewYork, recalled an intern who workedin the public relations firm’s recep-tion area. Rothman said the youngwoman “was slouching down in herseat, looking like she was watchingTV at home.”

Rothman took the intern asideand told her, “That’s not the alertlook you want your boss to see. Idon’t want clients or prospectiveclients to come in here and that’s thefirst impression they have of thecompany.”

Rothman has also dealt withsimilar issues, such as poor phonemanners and female interns wearingclothes that are too revealing.

“You have to anticipate andassume they know nothing,” shesaid.

Like employees, interns have arange of work ethics. Some are go-getters, while some spend more timetexting and on Facebook than theydo working. In the latter case, it’stime for an owner-intern talk.

Some interns just don’t workout. They don’t seem to learn.Owners who have dealt with theproblem usually let these interns go.

Jerden recalled an intern whocouldn’t spell and had grammarissues. Worse, she didn’t seem tograsp the fact that this was a prob-lem. “It became quite a handicap,”said Jerden. The young woman did-n’t last.

Learn From Your Intern Owners are finding that young

people who have social media savvycan help companies learn how to useservices like Facebook and Twitter. These owners put their interns towork helping the business get a bet-ter presence online.

“I’m not the best for posting toFacebook” said Julie Talenfeld, pres-ident of Boardroom Commun-ications Inc., based in Plantation,Fla. “It’s easy for them. They knowhow to do it.”

The Government’s Take on Interns

Owners need to be careful ifthey have unpaid interns that they’renot violating the federal Fair LaborStandards Act. The law spells out thecriteria that an internship must meetin order for the intern to be unpaid.

The government considers aninternship to be a training programthat is for the benefit of the intern, not the company. The intern shouldnot do the work that a regularemployee would do.

The Department of Labor’swebsite has information about thecriteria that must be met for an internto be unpaid. It can be accessed atwww.dol.gov/elaws/esa/flsa/scope/er15.asp.

Interns who get college creditbut not pay are covered by theSchool-to-Work Opportunities Actof 1994. The Labor Department’s

website also has information on theregulations governing these interns. As with the FLSA, an intern underthe School-to-Work act cannot dothe work of a regular employee.

The fact is, many companies douse interns to do work that employ-ees might do. Owners might want toconsider giving their interns a smallsalary. Your best move may be tocheck with a human resources con-sultant or labor lawyer.

she will replace Rep. Diane Watson, who served in Congress for 10 years— a job Bass contends she’s morethan prepared for.

“After spending five-and-a-half years in the worst economiccrisis in California history, I feelready,” Bass told the L.A. WattsTimes on Election Night. “I’m veryexcited about being able to go toD.C. to serve.”

Though Bass said she didn’tsuffer any sleepless nights on thecampaign, 31 fundraisers were heldand $600,000 was raised in 14weeks to fund the campaign.

Bass said she will continue tofocus on the foster care system andcriminal justice reform. She alsoplans to focus on foreign policyissues and root causes of poverty.

Bass’ landslide victory wascelebrated at the United Teachersof Los Angeles union building onWilshire Boulevard in LosAngeles.

The election party was attend-ed by more than 200 guests, includ-ing Rep. Watson and 26th DistrictSen. Curren Price and 2nd DistrictL.A. County Supervisor MarkRidley-Thomas.

“This is a great time to cele-brate because it shows that hardwork pays off,” Price said in aspeech at the election party.

Bass has demonstrated shecould be firm, strong, a visionary andbalanced … that’s the kind of leader-ship she showed in Sacramento with

her as the speaker and that’s the kindof leadership needed in Washington,Price added.

Watson said she felt confident inBass’ abilities to lead the 33rdDistrict.

“I’m proud I can pass the batonon to Speaker Emeritus Karen Bass,”Watson said in an interview. “It’s athrill to watch someone like KarenBass, who started with the Com-munity Coalition and who empow-ered people in her own neighbor-hood.

“I can’t think of a better personmore prepared, more skilled thanKaren Bass. She’s already an icon forothers to follow.”

Though Watson did not shareexactly what her next venture will beafter the November election, shemade it clear she’s only retiring fromthe House, not activism.

“I’m transitioning out of electedoffice,” Watson said. “You knowwhen that time comes, and the timehas come for me. I’m waiting forsomething to come through, though Icannot announce it yet.”

Watson also said she’ll be back-ing Democrats’ efforts to bring JerryBrown into office as California’s nextgovernor.

“Meg Whitman, for 28 years, did not vote and all of a sudden she’sgoing to tackle a state like Cali-fornia,” Watson said of the formereBay CEO who was the top Re-publican vote-getter in the primaryelection and is running againstBrown. “Tell her to come on down toSouthern California and get a taste ofreality.”
