the Vikings bolted a 28-0 lead at the half. Backup quarterback Chance Byrd completed 11 of 15 passes for 152 yards and two touchdowns and ran 11 times for 46 yards and a score. Taylor Mandich grabbed seven passes for 181 yards and three touch-downs, including a 70-yard scoring pass in the first half. Dalton Sendel-bach added 14 carries for 89 yards and a touchdown for the Vikings.

Lawrence kicker Patrick O’Mahoney also tied the school record of Cody Robel and Kraig Krueger with eight extra points. The Lawrence defense, which held Maranatha to just 76 yards, re-corded its first shutout since beating Ripon College 26-0 in 1991. It was a team effort on defense with Tony Harth leading the way with six tack-les, including a sack and 2.5 tackles

at the Lawrence 36 and returned it to the 21-yard line. Mortensen ran it in from 14 yards out two plays later, and Knox led 7-0. Lawrence came up with a turnover of its own when it stopped Mortensen on fourth-and-one at the Lawrence 36 on Knox’s next possession. Two plays later, Luke Barthelmess hit Dubnicka with a 41-yard pass to the Knox 15. He connected with Spina on the next play for the touchdown and the score was tied 7-7. Zach Eichhorst then intercepted Oosterbaan on the next drive and returned it 13 yards to the Knox 12. The Vikings couldn’t punch it in, but freshman kicker Pat O’Mahoney con-verted a 30-yard field goal, the first of his career, and Lawrence led 10-7. Lawrence stretched the lead to 17-7 in the third quarter. The Vikings marched 61 yards in nine plays for a touchdown. Luke Barthelmess fin-ished the drive with an eight-yard touchdown run with 5:05 left in the third. Knox trimmed the lead to 17-14 with the help of another Ruzicka interception. Taking over at their own 43, the Prairie Fire got a 30-yard run from Mortensen, and he then scored two plays later on a 27-yard run. Knox looked like it was going to take the lead midway through the fourth quarter when it drove all way to the Lawrence two-yard line. Facing fourth-and-goal from the two, Knox handed the ball to Mortensen, who was tackled for a loss by Wagner. Wagner led the Lawrence defense with 13 tackles, including 10 solo and 2.0 tackles for loss. Brandon Taylor picked up 12 tackles, including nine solo, and Dan Taylor had nine stops for the Vikings.

Last Week Lawrence routed Maranatha Bap-tist 59-0 on Sept. 13 in a nonconfer-ence game at the Banta Bowl. Lawrence quarterback Tanner Schuh played only the first half but ran for 99 yards and a touchdown and threw for 244 and two touchdowns as

The Vikings also intercepted five passes, one each by Alic Riedel, Dan Taylor, Nick Ulloa, Jake Walker and de-fensive end Gabor Bukszar. Lawrence scored touchdowns on its first three possessions and four of its first five. Trevor Spina had a four-yard run for the first touchdown, and Schuh scored from three yards out on the next drive for a 14-0 lead. After Mandich had his 55-yard touchdown catch called back due to a penalty, he hooked up with Schuh on a 70-yard scoring pass on the next play for a 21-0 lead. Mandich then caught a 23-yard scoring pass with 4:51 left in the second quarter to put the Vikings up 28-0. Lawrence got a 21-yard field goal from O’Mahoney to make it 31-0 mid-way through the third quarter. The Coaches Chris Harris (Cumberlands 2000) is serving as Law-rence’s interim head coach. Damon To-meo (Pomona-Pitzer 1999) is in his second season at Knox and has a record of 2-10 (.167). He is in his fifth season overall with a record of 16-40 (.286).

Vikings UpdateuAlthough Knox is a Midwest Con-ference team, this is a nonconference game for both

teams. Now that the conference has been split into divisions, teams will cross into the other division to play nonconference games. Lawrence fac-es Knox and then hosts Grinnell next week to complete its nonconference schedule. The Vikings start North Di-vision play when they host Beloit on Oct. 11. uInterim head coach Chris Harris joined some elite company with a vic-tory in his Lawrence coaching debut. The last Lawrence coach to win his first game was the legendary Ron Roberts, whose 1965 team defeated Carleton 35-7 in his first contest. Roberts also won his debut in the first-ever game in the Banta Bowl the following week That was a 26-21 victory over St. Olaf. The last coach to win his home debut was Chris Howard, whose 2005 team defeated Carroll 38-36.

uLawrence’s 59-0 win over Mara-natha was the first shutout by the Vikings since a 26-0 win at Ripon on Nov. 2, 1991, on a bitterly cold after-noon in the final game for coach Rich Agness. It was the first shutout in the

Banta Bowl since the Vikings beat Be-loit 7-0 in overtime on Oct. 25, 1986, a season that ended in a Midwest Con-ference championship for Lawrence.

ball history. In the modern era (since 1940), it is the second-largest mar-gin of victory. The only win that was bigger was a 62-0 drubbing of Ripon back in 1953. Overall, it’s the eighth-largest margin of victory.

uMaranatha simply couldn’t run the ball against the Vikings, and Lawrence held the Sabercats to minus-32 yards on 20 carries. Lawrence had 3.0 sacks and that accounted for 32 yards in loss. This is the lowest rushing total for an opponent in quite some time. The second-lowest total was two yards, which is all Lake Forest got against the Lawrence defense on Oct. 10, 2009.

uDefensive end Tony Harth (Madi-son, Wis./West) made a team-high six tackles against Maranatha and leads the team with 14 tackles on the sea-son. Harth also had a career-high 2.5 tackles for loss and picked up his first career sack against Maranatha.

uThe defense also intercepted five passes against Maranatha with Alic Riedel (Appleton, Wis./East), Dan Tay-lor (Bridgeport, Calif./Lee Vining), Nick Ulloa (Burlington, Wis./Catholic Cen-tral), Jake Walker (Bark River, Mich./Escanaba) and defensive end Gabor Bukszar (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast) all picking off passes. It was the first ca-reer interception for Riedel, Walker and Bukszar.

uThe five interceptions is the most by the Vikings since Lawrence picked off five passes in a 22-18 victory over Illinois College in the Banta Bowl on Sept. 29, 2007.

uThanks to the shutout, Lawrence ranks second in scoring defense at 17.0 points per game. The Vikings are first in total defense at 262.0 yards per contest.

uBoth of Lawrence’s quarterbacks turned in great games against Maranatha Baptist. Starter Tan-ner Schuh (Appleton, Wis./North) played only the first half 18-for-27 passing for a career-high 244 yards and two touch-downs. Schuh also ran 11 times for a career-high 99 yards.

uThe top target of the QBs was se-nior Taylor Mandich (Green Bay, Wis./Southwest), who had a career-high 181 receiving yards and matched his ca-reer high with seven catches. He also had a career-long 70-yard reception, which went for a touchdown.

uLawrence quarterbacks completed passes to nine different receivers in the win over Maranatha.

uLawrence ranks second in the con-ference in scoring offense at 32.5 points per contest. The Vikings are second in total offense at 445.0 yards per game.

uLawrence posted 656 yards of of-fense in the win over Maranatha Bap-tist. That is the highest total since Law-rence posted the same total, 656, in a 62-42 win at Knox on Sept. 10, 2011.

uSophomore kicker Patrick O’Mahoney (Evanston, Ill./Evan-ston Township) claimed Midwest Conference Special Teams Player of the Week honors in the wake of the victory over Maranatha Baptist. O’Mahoney tied the Lawrence record for extra points made (8) and attempted (8). He also booted a 21-yard field goal.

September 6Rockford 34, Lawrence 6 ROCKFORD, Ill. — The Lawrence University football team dug itself a big hole early, and Rockford University pulled away late for a 34-6 nonconference victory at Sam Greeley Field. The Regents (1-0) surged to a 19-0 lead just 11 minutes into the game, and Rockford then put up a pair of touchdowns in a 16-second span in the fourth quarter to seal the win. Quarterback Andrew Stochl and receiver Milton Phillips did most of the damage for the Regents. Stochl completed 17-of-27 passes for 291 yards and three touchdowns. Phillips caught five passes for 127 yards and a score. Lawrence (0-1) struggled on of-fense and had just 234 total yards. Rockford rolled up 448 yards of of-fense. After two touchdown passes from Stochl and a scoring run from Pete Berry put the Regents up early, Law-rence cut the deficit to 19-6. Fresh-man Alic Riedel blocked Cody Casa-zza’s punt to give Lawrence the ball at the Rockford 21-yard line. Lawrence scored eight plays later on Tanner Schuh’s two-yard run. Lawrence was driving again in the final minutes of the first half, but Schuh was intercepted in the Rock-ford end zone to end the threat. The score remained the same un-til Rockford drove 73 yards in eight plays midway through the fourth quarter. Stochl hit Dane Kirk with a 22-yard scoring pass for a 27-6 lead with 8:59 left. On the next play from scrimmage, Pascal Sylla intercepted Lawrence backup quarterback Chance Byrd and returned it 31 yards for a touchdown and a 34-6 lead. Schuh finished 10-of-29 passing for 103 yards. Byrd was 6-for-16 pass-ing for 68 yards and two interceptions.

Byrd led the team with seven carries for 34 yards, and Dan Rothbauer, Tay-lor Mandich and Tyler Lueck all had four catches apiece for the Vikings.

September 13Lawrence 59, Maranatha Baptist 0 A P P L E T O N , Wis. — The Law-rence University football team rout-ed Maranatha Bap-tist University 59-0 in a nonconfer-ence game at the Banta Bowl. Lawrence quarterback Tanner Schuh played only the first half but ran for 99 yards and a touchdown and threw for 244 and two touchdowns as the Vikings (1-1) bolted a 28-0 lead at the half. Law-rence kicker Patrick O’Mahoney also tied the school record of Cody Robel and Kraig Krueger with eight extra points. The Lawrence defense, which held Maranatha to just 76 yards, re-corded its first shutout since beating Ripon College 26-0 in 1991. It was a team effort on defense with Tony Harth leading the way with six tack-les, including a sack and 2.5 tackles for loss. Lawrence limited Maranatha (0-2) to 20 carries for a minus-32 yards on the ground.

The Vikings then picked up touchdowns on four of their next five possessions to complete the scoring. Byrd con-nected with Cole Erickson on an 11-yard touchdown pass and then hit Mandich from 21 yards out to push the lead to 45-0 after three quarters. Byrd had a 19-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter, and Sendelbach finished the scoring with a 20-yard touchdown scamper. The big bright spot for the Saber-cats was linebacker Ethan Kennon, who recorded 21 tackles, including 15 solo.
