the fact that you were a guest and wanted to do your part,

or were simply moved by the meaningfulness of our ser-

vices. Thank you.

We were able to cover Rabbi Levin and Cantor Mas

through your donaons, several of them incredibly gener-

ous. If you haven’t made a new year’s donaon yet, con-

sider donang to the General Fund before January 1 in

honor of or in memory of someone, for a celebratory

event in your life or in the life of a community member, or

just out of the goodness of your heart.

And if you have pledged money for revitalizaon, now is

the me to honor that commitment. Please.

Even though we are a small community, we have always

been caring and generous. Thank you in advance for your

support and your open hearts.

A good New Year to you all.

Der yiddisher vinkel – What’s New in Yiddish?

Jonathan Paretsky

נײעס פֿאַראַן װאָס איז עס?As the world around them changes, languages also

change, o*en very quickly. These changes are

quickly embraced by everyday-speakers and are

quickly rejected by language purists. Any American

speaker of Yiddish would immediately know what a

smaron is, but, as has been pointed out among

language preservaonists, if too many borrowings

are introduced, then Yiddish simply becomes Eng-

lish.

Are Shaw kindly alerted me to a recent New York

Times arcle about Yiddish neologisms and a new

diconary. This took me on a short voyage of in-

quiry about how new concepts have been taken up

into Yiddish.

For example, blitspost (lightning mail) has caught

on for "email." Tsvishnminik (an in-between type)

may be used for "transgender." If you want a desig-

nated driver, call on a nikhterer shofer, a driver

who is sober. An airsickness bag is a brekhbaytl. The

Forward recently asked readers to come up with a

word for "selfie"; two suggesons were ikh-bild (an

I-picture) and zelbstl (a li@le self).

So what is that device that we see in people's hands

everywhere, whether it's in the theater, driving in a

car, or walking in front of oncoming buses? In The

Yiddish Policemen's Union, Michael Chabon posited

a world in which a cell phone would be called a

shoyfer. Paul Glasser and Gitl Schaechter-

Viswanath's Comprehensive English-Yiddish Dic"on-

ary, on the other hand, suggests klug-

mobilke — an intelligent mobile device.

As smart as the device is, however, it

may not prevent you from calling alpi

tokhes— bu@-dialing.

Generous donors have provided this

year's aucon with a great variety of lovely items

for those shopping for wedding gis, beauty prod-

ucts & services, Lied Center perfomances, collec-

tors of vintage items, unique furniture pieces,

baby gis, clothing, financial advice, and much,

much more! Among the items waing for your

bid:

♦ Sterling silver candle holders

♦ sterling Audubon Society plates

♦ silverplated coffee service

♦ Tickets for Lied Center & KU Basketball

♦ vintage Emme1 Kelly doll
