ABOUT THE COURSE:

Law Enforcement I is an overview of the history, organization, and functions of local, state, and federal law enforcement.  This course includes the role of constitutional law, the United States legal system, criminal law, law enforcement terminology, and the classification and elements of crime.

Grade placement:

General Requirements: This course is recommended for students in Grades 10-12.

Grading Determination:

1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th 6 weeks period60% for test scores and major grades40% for daily in class assignments which includes participation, completion of work during class time, quizzes, current events, and weekly writing assignments Late Work:

I will accept late work with a ten point per day deduction for the first three days. Each student is responsible for all work missed for excused or unexcused absences in the same number of days in which he was absent unless the teacher lengthens the schedule.

Re-teach /Retest Procedure:Students will be given additional teaching opportunity of the material and allowed to re-test after viewing test corrections for major grades and keep the highest score.

STUDENTS ABSENCE PROCEDURES:Students are required to contact the teacher for any missed work. It is the student’s responsibility to inform the teacher upon returning to the classroom of their absence and need to make up the work. Tests will be administered at the teacher’s availability.

TUTORING:Tutoring schedule will be posted outside the classroom door. (Monday and Thursday 2:30-400PM). There will be the same number of days to make-up work as the number of days absent. The grade may be reduced by 10 points for each of the first three days the work is late but this will be dependent upon a student/ teacher conference when the student returns. Any problems completing work will be discussed with the student’s Assistant Principal.

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:1. Explain the historical perception of law enforcement services.2. Learn the role and responsibility of law enforcement officers.3. Discuss relevant rules, regulations and laws that apply to law

enforcement services.4. Discuss defensive tactics, restraint techniques, and first aid procedures as

used in the law enforcement setting.5. Analyze rehabilitation and alternatives to institutionalization.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES:Student learning activities are designed to lead the student to the successful acquisition of the student learning outcomes by:

1. Defining and using basic words and terminology related to Law Enforcement Services.2. Use critical thinking and problem solving skills to recognize the cause, effects and manifestations of crime.3. Use effective written and oral communication to communicate ideas and opinions.4. Develop a global understanding and appreciation of the systems in a democratic ideas and opinions.5. Develop and enhance research skills.

ACADEMIC HONESTY:Students must comply with the standards of conduct mandated by district policy as outlined in the district catalogue. Any student caught plagiarizing or cheating on an assignment in violation of that policy will not receive credit for that assignment. Discussions will occur before penalties are given.

It’s very simple….. You don’t need to cheat, so DON’T CHEAT!

COURSE STANDARDS OF CONDUCT: Students should take examinations when posted. Students are expected to understand and comply with ALL provisions of the

Klein ISD Student Handbook. Students will conduct themselves in an appropriate manner and follow the

District’s policy to read the lecture, take notes during lectures, use the power points provided on Blackboard and review materials.

GRADE APPEALS: Students sometimes feel questions that faculty members ask are unfair or that there is more than one right answer for a question. Please address these concerns to me personally.

ORGANIZATION OF THE COURSE:

Students should be familiar with basic computer skills and be adventurous on the internet. If needed, refer to the

orientation handout.

TESTING:

To be successfully complete the course, you should pay careful attention in class and take detailed notes from lectures presented. Test days are Mondays and Wednesdays.

DUE DATE SCHEDULE:

Homework assignment due dates will be posted in announcements. Exam dates will be given with enough notice to prepare. Written notes will be allowed for individual students to use during test times.

You should check external links for other sites of interest. There is a world of knowledge on the internet and you as a learner should take advantage of each opportunity to increase your knowledge base.Some of the links provide additional information about the subject.

HOMEWORK:

There will be some homework handed out during the course of each 6 weeks. You control the grade, which you make. Work during class time is afforded.

GRADING:90-100 A80-89 B75-79 C70-74 D69 and below F

Every student will be allowed to re-take any test and the higher grade will be recorded.
