    -ntroduction

After The Holy Bible and The Book of Concord + C. . !. !althers The Proper  Distinction Between Law and Gospel  is li/ely to be the wor/ that has 0ost influenced

those 0en in the (inistry of !ord and Sacra0ent in what is The Lutheran Church1

(issouri Synod. There are at least four reasons. irst+ the thirty1nine e%ening lectures are

theologically precise and doctrinally orthodo"+ resting upon and flowing fro0 thedoctrine of 2ustification. Second+ the wor/ is thoroughly practical and therefore of

i00ense i0portance to both pastor as proclai0er and the parishioner as hearer. Third+ the

twenty1fi%e theses were drawn forth fro0 the crucible of the Church (ilitant in whichone not only confesses the truth+ not only conde0ns the lie+ but also stands steadfast in

the breech when those in the world and in the congregation call for co0pro0ise of the

truth and tolerance for false doctrine and practice. ourth+ though 0ore than 334 yearssince the lectures were deli%ered and o%er a century in print+ the wor/ is stunningly and

soberly conte0porary. As such+ continued readings and study will benefit those who

in%est the ti0e.This guide was prepared to encourage the close e"a0ination and prolonged

0editation on what Dr. !alther had to say. The wor/ is not light reading. -t has been a

se0inary te"tboo/ and rightly so. The ideal use of this guide would be by a pastor

teaching a wee/ly class on the topic and using The Proper Distinction Between Law and Gospel  as the te"t. During the other days of the wee/ each 0e0ber would read the te"ts+

study the points and address the 5uestions during the other days of the wee/. Certainly

pri%ate study by clergy and laity is encouraged. Circuit pastors conferences could use itas for study by the brethren.

This guide was prepared based on the Dau translation and the pagination 6the

nu0bers in parentheses7 is fro0 an early edition of the sa0e. The  Preface and

Introduction is helpful in ter0s of history and conte"t.

Twenty years ago - read and studied !althers  Law and Gospel  as part of 0y

course wor/ at the se0inary. After a couple of years in the parish - used it as the basis for

an ad%anced doctrine class. Then for fifteen years or so - consulted it now and then.!hile preparing this reading and study guide+ - reali8e not only what a pastoral wor/ the

boo/ is but especially how 0uch it has influenced what the pastoral practice here at 9ur
