First days of fall ….

The lazy days of summer have sadly come to an end as we make the transition into busy school schedules and cool weather. September signifies the first days of fall, which let's be honest, gives us all the excuse to revamp the closet

and try out the new vintages from our favorite wineries! I look forward to cool nights warming up to a backyard fire while enjoying a glass of our regions new releases! Here at Lavish, we have incorporated two of my favorite things into one great issue: wine and fashion.

Our cover story this issue takes place in the beautiful Historic Folsom under the iconic white doors on the corner of Riley and Sutter Street. With the help of our beauty team at Allure Salon, we welcomed our new stylist Taryn Lynn to the set as she helped assemble and coordinate the shoot. So grateful for her help and a great addition to our team! Whether your in search for that perfect pair of jeans, booties or casual dress, we have you covered from our area's top trendsetting boutiques.

If your into vino, you're in good company! Read on in our Perfectly Paired feature to learn how our area's top culinary experts have paired their signature dishes with incredible wines to complete the perfect meal. We have also spotlighted the gorgeous Sutter Street Steakhouse as they showcase their breathtaking dining room and select menu choices. Also appearing in our Lavish on Locals section, is an introduction to one of El Dorado Hill's newest and brightest boutiques - Face in a Book, a spotlight on Folsom's new Citrine Boutique, and Missy O'Daniel educates us once again in our Beauty Buzz on how to shake off the summer damage.

Thank you again for your loyal readership and see you all in October!

Cheers!

PUBLISHER'SLetter EDITORS NOTE

“If you can imagine it, you can achieve it; if you can dream it,

you can become it.”

– William Arthur Ward

Cheers to Summer!

There are so many things to love about this time of year. The hot weather, late days, cool drinks, fun in the sun, backyard barbeques and good times with friends and family are what come to mind most. With the kids out of

school, there is no better time to pack up and take advantage of all the fun things to do around our community. We are surrounded with gorgeous scenery from the rolling golden hills to beautiful Folsom Lake; the outdoors are our playground, go enjoy it! Our Charity Spotlight this month declares July as National Parks and Recreation month, so pack up that picnic basket, the kids, and enjoy a picturesque day outside! This issue of Lavish, we tried to encompass all things summer. With temperatures soaring into the triple digits, we took our search indoors to find the ultimate summer cocktail! We were fortunate enough to be introduced to six awesome bartenders who wowed us with their creations. Besides taste testing through these pieces of art (tough job, we know...) we got to meet some incredible people who express their passion in every glass. I strongly encourage you to pay them a visit, you will not be disappointed! Appearing on our cover this month is our Sweet Summer Days fashion spread. Although the shoot fell on the hottest day of the year to date, we had a blast with the help from Larry Barrett at Lucky's Land and Sea. Larry provided the gorgeous boat we shot and also coordinated a friend to drive us around the lake to take some incredible water shots. Everything you see in these photos are for sale, including the boat! I could not be more thankful of Larry and the Lavish team for sticking it out that day! It was a scorcher! In line with the heat this month, we have selected out Getaway to the amazing Phoenix, AZ. Just a short plane ride away, this oasis amidst the desert is an incredible option for relaxation and adventurers alike. Also spotlighted this month is Back Wine Bar & Bistro in Folsom. If you have not tried this restaurant, I'm sure the photos will entice you to try them out! As always, thank you for your loyal readership! and I hope you all enjoy this fun issue! See you in August! FACE IN

ABookIt’s back to school time and one bookstore wants you to get your “Face In A Book!”

BY KELSEY WEHSELS | PHOTOS DAN HOOD

With the wide use of the internet and devices such as the Kindle Fire and Barnes & Noble Nook, books might seem to be in short supply. One entreprenuer is determined to keep that from happening. Tina Ferguson opened Face In A Book, an independent bookstore, two years ago.“I’ve been called everything from courageous to crazy,” she said. Her inspiration came from a conversation with a friend, discontent about the closing of Borders in Folsom. “I love books, I love people, and I love to shop!” she said. “I figured owning and operating a bookstore would be perfect for me!”

ANN SPADE, GENERAL MANAGER

Page 18: Lavish Living Magazine September 2014

While Face In A Book offers over 3000 titles, the bookstore also sells other items including jewlery, home decor, and greeting cards just to name a few. The current hot-selling items are women’s scarves and accessories, Lenny & Eva jewelry and reading glasses. Children’s books seem to be the biggest trend, outselling other genres three to one. Originally from El Dorado County, Ferguson and her family relocated back to the area in 2000 after living in the Central Valley and Bay Area for seven years, where her husband, Dave, worked on the software industry. She decided to open her business in El Dorado Hills because she loves the small town feel and the support of the community for small businesses. “I wanted to have a business in the community in which I live because I believe that all businesses are based on relationships and the relationships that I have had the pleasure of cultivating here have been incredible,” she explained. While she anticiapted the community’s support, she is pleasantly surprised by how quickly the store and the staff were emabraced. “The most rewarding thing about owning an independent bookstore is hearing the gasps of excitment and delight of our customers finding that special book they’d been searching for,” said Ferguson.

She also expected to get more reading done since she would constantly be surrounded by books, but she admits that that has not been the case. She expressed that the most difficult aspect to owning her own business has been the balance between work and family time. Tina and Dave have two daughters, Abbey, who is attending Westmont College in Montecito and Emily, who will be a senior at Oak Ridge High School. Before opening the bookstore, Tina decided to stay home to raise the two girls.“I chose to stay at home with my girls and enjoyed volunteering my time in their classrooms and serving on the PTA at their schools,” she said. “I wanted the flexibility to travel and see my kids after they went off to school.” She also worked for three years as a consultant at Southern Living at Home, a direct sales company. The bookstore currently has a staff of seven, two of which are college students and will be returning to school in the fall. “They are the most incredible group of women,” said Ferguson. In 2013, the bookstore was nominated for “Best Start-Up of 2013” which came as a shock to Ferguson, as most businesses nominate themselves and she had not. “I was really surprised,” she said. “It was really nice to get the support from the

L O L LAVISH ON LOCALS

Chamber.” Face In A Book won the award, and Ferguson received her honor at the annual dinner held by the Chamber of Commerce. Every month, the bookstore hosts a special event titled “Third Thursdays.” The events feature wine tasting from Nello Olivo winery and different themed presentations. The third Thursday of the month for September will feature a theme on “history, focused on non-fiction books including autobiographies and memoirs. The event is free and will be held from 6:30-8pm.

Missy O’DanielBeauty Expert

BY MISSY O’DANIEL

The sunshine of summer has lingered into autumn, and is showing the signs of wear to our outer beauty. Although we need UV rays from the sun in order to stay healthy, too much exposure to the sun can cause severe damage to our hair and skin, causing extreme dryness. As a beauty expert, I have highlighted some recommendations to reverse the summer damage and harness our healthy, natural beauty back this September.

HAIRCARE: SHAMPOO YOUR HAIR LESS OFTEN. During the summer months skipping daily shampoos help generate natural oils, which naturally conditions the hair.

DEEP CONDITION YOUR HAIR WEEKLY WITH A MASQUE.My personal favorite is Kerastase from Paris. Kerastase has several masques to choose from depending on your needs. The ultimate treatments last up to ten shampoo’s. These treatments are custom designed to address all your hair needs and repair your hair from the inside out.

HYDRATION. Cocoanut Oil is a natural remedy to defend against dryness. Apply 1 tablespoon into the palm of your hand, rub your hands together to emulsify, and apply to dry hair. The coconut oil will penetrate the cuticle of each hair strand, providing nutrients and ultimate shine.

LEAVE-IN CONDITIONER. Use a leave in conditioner that contains sunscreen. This will help prevent dry hair and color fading.

CUT OUT THE TOOLS. Eliminating the use of hot tools such as blow dryers, curling irons, and flat irons will also help protect your hair. Wearing your hair exuding it’s natural texture is all the rage. Styling products can offer the support your hair needs to create a beach-like texture.

SKINCARE:The best prevention to dry skin is using a body scrub. You can purchase a body scrub at any drug store or make your own natural, chemical free body scrub. First you want to choose between a salt scrub or a sugar scrub. These two ingredients offer a gritty texture to

help remove dead skin cells. Deciding between the two types will be based on the how coarse of a scrub you desire. Salts such as fine salt, table salt, sea salt, Epsom salt, and Kosher salt can be used to create a more aggressive scrub. Sugar is another alternative, which creates a more refined polish. You will then need to add a carrier oil to give the salt or sugar a vehicle to help spread the scrub and smooth away the skin.

SUGGESTED BEAUTY OILS FOR BODY SCRUBS:

L O L LAVISH ON LOCALS

CitrineBoutiqueBY KELSEY WEHSELS

One local boutique bursting with Northern California pride has embraced the mantra “You can’t buy happiness, but you can buy local, and that’s kind of the same thing.” Citrine Boutique opened just five months ago and is already becoming a favorite in the area. Owner, Jenny Diel, opened the boutique to offer locals something not typically found at big chain stores. “I have always wanted a small boutique that offered a little something different than your average box store,” said Diel. “I wanted a one-stop-shop for a gift boutique.” Named after the Citrine stone and Diel’s love of yellow, the shop has a variety of items for customers to choose from. Items range from jewelry hand-crafted by local artists, unique wine barrel home decor

and furniture, wine charms, hand-made soaps, candles, children’s items, and greeting cards. Beginning at the end of September, the boutique will also offer a gift wrapping service and delivery within the Folsom limits. The best part of the business for Diel has been meeting new people and learning new things. “I love the opportunity to be able to interact and support the local community and it’s bounty of talented artisans and creative people, and at the same time provide a unique alternative to the big chain stores,” she said. Before owning Citrine, she was a full-time stay at home mom and owner of Sierra Outdoor Cinema, a seasonal outdoor movie business, where they produced a series at the

visitor’s center every other Saturday for three months out of the season. They also produced events in the local community at parks in El Dorado and Sacramento Counties. “We still love having our own private parties with the 26-by-30-feet screen,” she said. “It was a blast and the community loved it!” On top of being a mother, wife, and business owner, Diel is also the Director of Special Spaces for Sacramento and El Dorado Counties. The non-profit organization creates dream bedrooms for children with life-threatening illnesses. The charity has also created many beneficial connections for Diel, where she has met many talented artisans that are featured in the store. From their business together, some relationships have fostered into friendships. And for Diel, business in the area is not seen as a competition, but rather a teamwork of enhancing each other’s businesses. “I want to work with people with the same goals as me,” she added. Diel clearly has a passion for her store, the community and local artists. “I am a believer in, if you do what you love, it’s not work,” she said.

TRENDING with DebiPREPARE YOUR HOME FOR A VIRTUAL TOURBY MICHELLE FINDERS

Never underestimate the power of photography. With more buyers shopping for homes on the web, photos and virtual tours are an absolute must when selling your home in today’s market. With competition staying strong, a beautiful presentation of your home may be the edge on comparisons and drive additional traffic and exposure to your home. There are many things you can do make your home shine on camera. As a certified stager with Barb Schwartz at Stagedhomes.com, our resident real estate guru Debi Ambroff is here to share her tips she personally learned from one of the best in the business…

L O L LAVISH ON LOCALS

Page 30: Lavish Living Magazine September 2014

UNDERSTAND THECAMERA’S PERSPECTIVEThe camera’s eye is very different from the human eye. It magnifies clutter and poor furniture arrangement. To make a home shine in a virtual tour or video presentation, cater to the lens. Move furniture and accessories around from shot to shot to highlight the rooms best attributes.

MAKE THE HOME “Q-TIP CLEAN”Because the camera magnifies grime, each room must be spotless. Don’t forget floor coverings and walls; a discolored spot on the rug might be overlooked by prospects during a regular home showing, but that stain becomes a focal point for online viewers.

PACK UP THE CLUTTERClutter is a common sense no-no when selling your home. However, having a few items out will bring some appeal and life to the room. The tip - leave three items of varying heights on each surface. For example, on an end table you can place a lamp (high), a small plant (medium), and a book (low).

SNAP PICTURESThis will give you an idea of what the home will look like on camera. Closely examine the photos and list changes that would improve each room’s appearance: opening blinds to let in natural light, removing magnets from the refrigerator, or taking down distracting art.

PARE DOWN FURNITUREIdentify one or two pieces of furniture that can be removed from each room to make the space appear larger.

REARRANGESpotlight the flow of a space by creating a focal point on the furthest wall from the doorway and arranging the other pieces of furniture to make a triangle shape. The focal point may be a bed in a bedroom or a china cabinet in a dining room.

RE-ACCESSORIZEInclude a healthy plant in every room; the camera loves green. Energize bland décor by placing a bright vase on a mantle or draping an afghan over a couch.

KEEP THE HOME IN SHAPEYou want buyers who liked what they saw online to encounter the same home in person. Remember always...

HOW YOU LIVE IN YOUR HOME IS NOT HOW YOU SELL IT! CLUTTER EATS EQUITY TOO!

L O L CHARITY SPOTLIGHT

MAN'SbestFRIEND

C H A R I T Y S P O T L I G H T

BY KELSEY WEHSELS

Dogs are man’s best friend, but sometimes they’re not treated like best friends and they need some help. Homeward Bound Golden Retriever Rescue has been help-ing and rescuing dogs since 2000, totaling almost 8,000 dogs. “We take not only goldens, but golden mixes, friends of goldens, dogs that came with goldens, distant cousins of goldens and dogs dumped near our property in Elverta,” said Candy Courtney, Vice President of Homeward Bound and Chairman of Kibbles & Bids. The all-volunteer non-profit organization is one of only four golden rescues in the United States with a sanctuary and Adoption Center, rescuing more goldens an-nually than any other Golden rescue organization in the nation. The Homeward Bound Sanctuary provides goldens with a peaceful and safe environment as they await adoption or live out their lives. Amenities include climate controlled ken-

nels, a swimming pool designed for dogs and large grassy yards. The association also provides a variety of programs to match the needs of the dogs and prospective adoptive parents. The senior-to-senior connection pairs older dogs with retired couples (60+) who are not working and are on a limited income. Adoption fees are waived and life-time veterinary care is provided. It is their belief that retired people can devote more time and attention to their adopted pet. The youth program allows student volunteers on Saturdays to walk and clean up after the dogs. The goal of the program is to teach students about responsible pet own-ership. Another program offered is the Golden Rule Training Program, which offers basic and intermediate classes and socialization training with a certified instructor. These classes are open to the public and all breeds are welcome. In order to better pro-vide for the dogs and to continue to offer these programs, Homeward Bound is holding their 14th annual gala fundraiser called “Kibble & Bids” with this year’s theme being “Goldenopoly.” The evening will include food from local restaurants and caterers, wines and craft brews, silent and live auctions, featuring items such as travel, jewelry, golf rounds and gift certificates for restaurants. There will also be a wine wall, usually their most popular attraction. Wine bottles are wrapped and arranged on a wall and customers purchase a cork with a number. They are given the corresponding bottle to that number and this year some wine bottles total over $50. The Kibbles & Bids fundraiser has seen 600-700 gusts annually and usually raises around $100K. Funds from the event will go towards routine veterinary care, non-routine surgeries of all specialties, heartworm treatments, medications, food, treats, and lodging.

SIENNA NEWAMERICAN GRILL3909 Park Dr., El Dorado Hills

Sauvignon Blanc & MushroomCrusted Wild Alaskan Halibut

An elegant and bright atmosphere dishes out a global, new American cuisine for an upscale- casual audience. Bottomless mimosas are a big hit during brunch hours, and live music is enjoyed every Thursday-Friday. These musical melodies offer Easy Listening or Top 40 songs for the evening’s enjoyment. Divulge at the exclusive Chef’s Table, where a custom menu invites you to sit and watch as Director of Operations, Mark Fucci creates you your custom masterpiece. As an expert in wine pairing, Fucci pairs a Twomey Napa Valley & Sonoma County Sauvignon Blanc 2013 (By Silver Oak) with Mushroom- Crusted Wild Alaskan Halibut, with sautéed spinach, broccoflower & sweet red onion, topped with a Sriracha aioli and sided with cilantro-lime rice. Fucci says the Sauvignon Blanc gives a beautiful balance of citrus & mineral elements that are complimented by guava & tropical notes. “Twomey Sauvignon Blanc has its herbaceous notes that pairs well with the cilantro in the rice and the spice in the aioli. Alaskan Halibut (with its rich flavor) lends itself to the acidity and citrus notes in the wine. Alaskan Halibut, spice, herbs & sautéed vegetables are a delicious pairing with Sauvignon Blanc,” says Fucci.

TOWN HOUSE RESTAURANTAT WINE & ROSES2505 W. Turner Road, Lodi, CA 95242

Chardonnay & ScallopsThe Towne House delivers an exceptional, intimate dining experience in the original Towne house, and offers cozy evenings in the lounge- where music is at the center with Kim Nejak on Wednesdays- Saturdays, and Jason Myers on Sundays and Mondays. The Towne House offers a farm-to-table experience with ingredients sourced from small local farms, as well as their own garden. The restaurant is committed to creating fresh, natural and innovative dishes that feature the highest in quality seasonal, and regionally-sourced ingredients. The Towne house believes dining should be fun, with freshness and surprises in the menu, and warmth and knowledge within the dining room service. They even offer signature wine events throughout the year, along with many cooking classes and demonstrations. The wine list boasts approximately 200 wines, and regional Lodi wines represent a partnership of passions that embraces the history of the Lodi appellation while supporting land stewardship and certified sustainable practices. These great wines speak of Lodi’s origin and their characteristics truly represent the taste of the native soil. That’s why the kitchen pairs Harney Lane Chardonnay with seared Day Boat Scallops and Kaffir-Scented Israeli Couscous, along with Spinach, Corn, and Corn Foam. The Chardonnay has fresh notes of lemon custard, vanilla bean, and a rich creaminess which pairs beautifully with the floral of the Kaffir and the sweetness of the corn. Additionally, the brininess of the Scallops balances out the sweet and savory within the pairing.

LAND OCEAN NEW AMERICAN GRILL2720 E. Bidwell St., Folsom

Cabernet Sauvignon & Rib Eye SteakKnown for their high quality proteins, Land Ocean is “the best of the land and sea!” Open for about 3 years, this New American Grill provides a gorgeous, masculine setting; with all-booth seating, lower lighting levels, and dark, rich colors. Brunch is from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. on the weekends, and Happy Hour is during the weekdays from 3-6 p.m. Tasty steaks and sea foods, along with refreshing craft beers, and cocktails are some of their greatest specialties! Mark Fucci recommends the chef's 1700 degree broiler to sear in the flavor of a 16 ounce Premium Rib Eye, and serves it with Yukon gold smashed potatoes, sautéed asparagus & garlic mushrooms. Mount Veeder Winery Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (2011) is the selected pair because of its full bodied, vibrant fruit and approachable tannins, with notes of blackberry, cocoa & black peppercorn. Fucci says, “Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon pairs very well with richly marbled steaks like Rib Eye because the rich marbling in the steak coats your palate and softens the tannins-- making the wine smooth, rounded & very pleasant to drink.”

SOURCE5540 Douglas Blvd., Ste. 110Granite Bay

Tempranillo & Smokey BBQ RibsSource prides itself in “sourcing” out the ingredients through the relationships they build with farmers and purveyors, as well as bringing in the freshest seafood from all around the globe year round. Source looks locally, as well as globally, for farmers and suppliers who have the same passion about sustainability and quality as they do. Owner and Head Chef, Irie Gengler, has built relationships from his years of experience at places like Wolfgang Puck’s Spago, Roy’s Restaurant on Maui, Brix in the Napa Valley, and the Firehouse Restaurant in Sacramento. The globally- inspired tapas menu is intriguing and ever-changing to accent the products that are in season. The right side of the menu is comprised of large plates to be enjoyed as a single entrée or for sharing family style. The wine list follows the same trend as the menu-- using relationships with many local and global wineries that pride themselves in sourcing out the best fruit or farming the best vines. To pair a wine with an entrée, Gengler and his crew chose the Scribner Black Hat Tempranillo from Clarksburg, and the Smokey BBQ Ribs. Tempranillo has nice smoky- cherry, lavender, and black olive flavors, which pair great with BBQ ribs. The smoky- cherry and lavender really gives a lift to the palette and plays well with the BBQ sauce. The black olive/plum flavors and the deep flavors of the meat play nicely together with the medium tannins-- keeping juiciness on the palette, and offsets the dense flavors of BBQ as well. The clove notes usually found in Tempranillo add the perfect complement to Smoky BBQ.

STANLEY’S STEAKHOUSE 2 Water St., Jackson

Merlot & Rib Eye SteakThis particular Steakhouse has been hosting guests in fine dining since 1852. After a fire eleven

years later, The National Hotel was rebuilt to cater to travelers during the Great California Gold Rush, and since then, is a hot spot for people visiting the Jackson area. Refinished

furniture and artwork bring a vintage Victorian look to all parts of the building, including its restaurant. Stanley’s Steakhouse is named after the favorite meal of the Nation

Hotel’s owner, Stanley Lukowicz. Fine, tender steaks are cooked to perfection with all of the trimmings. Vegetarian entrees are also offered, along with the extensive wine cellar that hosts plenty of local vintage wines, as well as spectacular international wines. That’s why this fine dining restaurant chose to pair Roth Estate Alexander Valley Merlot from Sonoma (2010) with their Thunder Ridge Rib Eye Steak. The Panzanella salad that accompanies the steak has fresh heirloom tomatoes, arugula, and pickled red onion. Merlot has enough acidity to complement the salad, while being bold enough to complement the Rib Eye.

Riesling & Hamachi Jalapeño ChiliAji’s creates some of the most beautiful dishes of the Japa-nese cuisine and serves them amongst their low-lighted, dimmed ambiance full of dark brown booths and tables with chairs. As experts in wine pairing, Executive Chef Partner, Russell Okubo, and Managing Partner, Nick L. Dedier III, likes to pair Roku Riesling from Monterey County (2012) with a Hamachi Jalapeño Chili. Okubo and Dedier feel that Riesling is a natural pair for almost all foods from Asia or the Pacific and has long been looked down upon as a sweet wine or a wine that lacks seriousness; but in fact, nothing could be farther from the truth. Okubo and Deider say, “Riesling has been highly regarded among the wine connoisseurs for its body, elegant nose, and its ability to pair with difficult foods. The wine is off dry with a touch of residual sugar and carries with it a power house of flavors and aromas. When smelling these aromas, the first thing that pops out is peaches, stone fruits and white flower like lilac and honey suckle. On the palate, this wine sings with a full body and the confirmation of peaches, nectar-ines and Bosque pear. The perceived sweetness in Riesling, along with its body and balanced acidity make it perfect for foods with a little spice or heat. Paired with the Hamachi Jalapeño Chili, this wine picks up the citrus notes of the ponzu, plays with the sweetness of the fish, and cools down the spiciness of the jalapeño. If you are eating Asian food, you should be drinking Riesling. As your taste for adven-ture with this varietal progress, you’ll find that German and Alsatian Rieslings become more exciting for their earthy and mineral notes, along with their ability to age.”

PAUL MARTIN’S AMERICAN GRILL1455 Eureka Rd., Roseville

Pinot Grigio & Grilled SalmonWith a polished, casual, and relaxed atmosphere Paul Martin’s dines against a long brick wall, which complements the yellows, tans, and browns that sweep across the res-taurant. Founders, Brian Bennett and Paul Fleming, had a vision for a restaurant they wished was in their neighborhood — a place that serves you dishes made from scratch with the highest quality ingredients prepared simply and well, all offered at acces-sible prices. The kitchen’s motto remains “Seasonal & Delicious.” On the menu you will find some of the best seafood from sustainable fisheries, free-range and natural meats and poultry, artisan cheeses, and cured meats. Alongside the food, artisanal cocktails are made with house-infused spirits, craft beers and a deep selection of over 100 wine labels, across 15 varietals-- most of which are offered by the glass. One distinct pairing choice is the Luna Winery Napa Valley Pinot Grigio (2012) with the Grilled Salmon entrée. The Steelhead salmon is cooked on a mesquite grill and served with Meyer lemon vinaigrette and chilled quinoa with a Bulgur wheat salad. The lightly fruity and aromatic nose, yet full-bodied texture of the Luna 2012 Pinot Grigio complements the mesquite-grilled fish so well. Together, the wine and dish make for a very satisfying dining experience.

When it comes to great food and restaurants, our community can certainly hold its own. In the past two years alone, we've seen an emergence of top-notch, brand-new restaurants modeled after those of the big cities, both in cuisine and atmosphere. But the real standouts are the restaurants that have been here for forty years and are still servings some of the best cuisine around, while also molding and shaping with the ties, using fresh, local produce whenever possible. We feel lucky to be able to enjoy

these local chefs, wineries and restuarants in our own backyard-so dig in and enjoy!

LAND OCEAN RestaurantCHEF BRIAN BUTLER

Executive Chef Brian Butler of Land Ocean Restaurant in Folsom was born in Wyoming and raised in the Central Coast of California just south of Pismo Beach. He is married to wife Katie and together have three children; Tyler, Jaxon and Wyatt. Brian attended The Art Institute of California Sacramento in 2009 and found his home at Land Ocean when the restaurant first opened its doors in 2011. Brian always enjoyed cooking and creating in the kitchen. After he and his wife planned and catered his sister’s wedding, Brian found himself in culinary school three months later. Brian’s style in the kitchen is described as eclectic. He is always creating something new and goes with the notion of whatever feels right at the time. He feels it is essential to implement simplicity when creating his menu; dishes that are easy to execute and enjoyable for all diners. Chef Brain replies with, “If you can’t replicate a dish, there is no reason to keep it on a menu!” Chef Brian recommends the Kobe Flat Iron Steak, one of the signature dishes of Land Ocean. When at home with friends and family, Chef Brian loves creating a Tri-Tip, Santa Maria style prepared in an oak pit barbeque with salt, pepper, garlic and served with salsa. His love for culinary arts and preparing a great meal has launched his career and allows diners to enjoy his incredible creations.

MACCHIA Winery Home to 2013’s “Best Zinfandel in the State of California,” Macchia prides themselves on making the best wine for the best price. Specializing in Zinfandels and Italians, the well balanced, big and bold flavors that fill their bottles are often award-winning. Owners, Tim and Lani Holdener, passionately submerge themselves in every aspect of their business. As Tim creates each wine, Lani develops a perfect environment for each sip. Embodying their Italian name, Macchia, (“the spot”) their winery and wine club mirrors the bold and beautiful characteristics of their product. “My husband is just great at what he does,” smiles Lani. And others agree. Macchia’s wine cellar is basically a trophy case. Tim’s wines of 2011 including the Petite Sirah, “Rebellious,” Zinfandel, “Mischievous,” and Zinfandel, “Ambitious” all received Gold “Best of Class” at the California State Fair. Bringing home the Double Gold, yet again, was their 2011 Zinfandel, “Adventurous” which received Double Gold, Best of California, “Best of Class.” And, it doesn’t stop there. Macchia’s 2009 Port was crowned a Double Gold “Best of Show” at the El Dorado City Fair. Their winery is full of many other “Double Golds” and “Best of Class” including the 2011 Sangiovese, “Amorous” and Serious Old Vine Wine. In addition to this impressive list, Macchia’s Italian varietals have gained international recognition, and their Barberas have been named best outside of Italy. Wine lovers, unite! Macchia offers two types of wine club memberships. Both offering amazing discounts on their award-winning wines, access to their specialty bottles, exclusive wines, and other benefits. New to the wine club, is an expansion of the exclusive clubhouse. This outdoor earthy style is calming and welcoming. Enjoy the tranquility of cracking wood in the fireplace as you sip on rich, textured flavors. This winery is muti-layered. From the sophistication of their production and

HARNEY LANE WineryFor more than one hundred years, the George Mettler family has farmed Harney Lane, a 100-acre parcel of land just east of Lodi. But it wasn’t until 2006 that they decided to venture into winemaking. The family now has complete control of their wines from the vineyard, to the bottle, to the consumer. All the grapes are hand picked, hand sorted, then fermented in small lots and barrel aged. This attention to detail and determination to make the best product possible has certainly paid off. In five short years, Harney Lane Winery has developed a portfolio of unique, memorable estate varietals including Old Vine Zinfandel, Tempranillo, Primitivo, Petite Sirah, and Albariño—along with classic Chardonnay. Judging from the rapid growth of its wine club, Wine:30, and the fact that nearly all (95 percent or more) of its inventory

is sold in the tasting room, Harney Lane has quickly developed an enthusiastic and loyal following. The wines consistently stand out at major wine competitions. At the 2014 California State Fair both their 2013 Albarino and their 2011 Old Vine Zinfandel took Double Gold Medals. The gracious tasting room offers tastes of the winery’s compelling portfolio, as well as a gift shop stocked with creative wine-related gifts. Harney Lane prides itself in not only producing wonderful wines but in creating a tasting experience where guests feel warm, welcome, and an extended part of the family. They are open for tasting Thursday through Monday from 11am to 5pm.

KLINKER BRICKWinerySTEVE & LORI FELTEN, OWNERS

Established in 2000, Klinker Brick Winery began as a home-office operation with Steve & Lori Felten at the helm. Before that and without any pre-conceived plans to open a winery, the Feltens realized that they could create and produce something special from the quality juice which they were, at the time, selling off to other reputable wineries. What began as an idea, materialized into a forty-four state distribution schedule as well as a delightfully rustic and rural tasting room which was founded in 2010. Klinker Brick continues to produce high quality wines including a dry-style rosé, syrah, and their flagship zinfandel.

BERGHOLD VineyardsTIMELESS TASTES

Opened in 2005, Berghold Vineyards is a boutique estate winery, specializing in eight different varietals including viognier, zinfandel, syrah, cabernet sauvignon, mourvedre, granache, petit syrah, and merlot. Winemaker Miles Berghold creates a sophisticated collection of wines, combining the finesse, elegance, and smooth finish of the European style with the fruit forward body of California wines to create something truly enjoyable for a range of palettes. For those looking to enjoy their wine in a setting that’s equally stylish, Berghold Vineyards’ tasting room is something to behold. For twenty years, owner Joe Berghold collected American antiques dating from 1840-1900 with the intention to eventually build a tasting room that would have a sense of history, warmth, and beauty. Today, visitors can see his dream realized, and Berghold’s beautiful mahogany bar (recovered from a nineteenth century brothel in Pennsylvania) beckons guests to relax and admire while sipping. For those who share Joe’s passion for combining quality antiques and fine wine, Berghold also sells antique armoires that can be customized into humidors and wine vaults. These investment grade antiques come from Joe’s own private collection of antique armoires, the largest private collection in the United States. Berghold Vineyards is a standout among Lodi’s wine county, and has as much personality and depth as the family that started the business. For those who want something special in their wine-tasting experience, Berghold Vineyards is an idyllic setting.

Later in 2007, he moved to San Francisco to assist in the management of one of the city’s most decorated restaurants, Restaurant Gary Danko. Shortly after, he was then presented with an opportunity within his mentor’s organization, The Thomas Keller Group which is best known for their world-class dining establishments, the French Laundry and Per Se. STANLEY'S STEAKHOUSEat The National HotelEXECUTIVE CHEF DAN MOORE

Executive Chef Dan Moore is pleased to be back in his native Northern California, at the helm of Stanley’s Steakhouse at The National Hotel in Jackson, having trained under and worked with notable chefs from San Francisco to New Orleans. After completing his studies at the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco in 2001, Moore secured an externship at Postrio, which led to a full-time position there. The Wolfgang Puck restaurant, headed up by chefs Steven and Mitchell Rosenthal, became “the foundation” of Moore’s career, and the “real world education in the practical application of the skills learned in culinary school at a high level.” In 2003, Moore followed what he calls his “ten-year plan” by heading to yet another U.S. culinary hot spot, New Orleans. It was at Herbsaint, under Chef Donald Link, that Moore worked as the chef de tournant, where he honed his skills at refining simple cuisine: “As opposed to the foie gras and truffles at Postrio, at Herbsaint I learned to perfect roast chicken and cooking hanger steak.” Following his heart back to Northern California in 2004, Moore sharpened his skills at the art of Italian cuisine, when he went to work for Proprietor/Chef Angelo Auriana, (of Valentino in Santa Monica), at his newly opened Masque, in El Dorado Hills. In 2006, Moore hopped over the county line to TASTE, Mark and Tracey Berkner’s restaurant in Plymouth (Amador County), where he started as a sous chef, eventually becoming chef de cuisine. From there, it was two years at Paragary Restaurant Group’s The Esquire Grill, and then Slocum House in Fair Oaks, where he expanded his expertise to include preparing “intense, technique-driven cuisine.” Today, Moore has settled into the foothill life, having found not only a thriving, challenging career, but a fulfilling personal life as well, which has brought “balance” to his life in the form of his wife Alicia, and son, Xan. Moore is excited to lead Stanley’s Steakhouse, with a focus on high-quality, seasonal ingredients: “I want to make food that is approachable to the customer, and familiar, while at the same time open their dining experience to new flavors and techniques.”

THE World Market

EXPERIENCE

Finally… off to the Las Vegas World Market. This happens just twice a year and the mar-ket is full of people from all over the world. For an attending designer, it’s like a child be-ing trapped in a candy store. So much to see and so little time. Unfortunately the market is open only a limited time (usually about 5 days) for buyers to explore and gain resources needed to complete their projects. A good de-signer needs multiple product resources that are provided by exploring the showrooms at the market. Most of the showrooms are closed from market to market so it is very important to maximize your time. We are very fortunate to live so close to the largest showroom complex in the world for the home and hospitality furnishing indus-try, conveniently located in Las Vegas. The World Market is divided into three buildings. In the morning all attendees are greeted with

coffee and a bag of goodies at the main plaza to start the day. From there everyone creates their own agendas. At this year’s market my main agenda is to find unique & affordable accent pieces that connect to my client’s per-sonalities. Since most of my clients do not want furnishings that are found in local re-tail stores, it is my job to seek those special finds that may be discovered by shopping new and existing vendors I have been using for the past 25 years. It is always amazing to see what is coming into our near future. While doing a design package for a client I usually divide my attention into several areas. These areas are furniture (upholstery & case goods), window coverings, area rugs, lighting, art and etc. Keep in mind that there are resources scattered into 3 buildings. There is something for everyone; from very mainstream merchan-dise to a featured commode that is installed in

a traditional upholstered chair. A Have to See item.....While shop-ping for resources my biggest chal-lenge is finding furnishings that are unique, well priced, good quality and accessible. All factors play a large part in whether they will work for my business. Since most of my projects are completed in 6-8 weeks it is very important to be aware of availability and delivery. I have eliminated some resources due to continuous back orders. For any one of you that are de-sign savvy...Nikki Chu was the highlight for celebrity divas at the market... her designs are gold & silver glitz. I actually saw a lot of gold and silver throughout the market so I guess we will be see-ing a lot of this in 2014 and 2015.Nikki will also be broadcasted on September 3rd in Girlfriend Confidential L.A., an American Reality Show. For those who are

old enough to remember Donnie Osmond. Yes, would you believe Donnie Osmond has his own furni-ture line? I guess since he has been performing in Las Vegas for many years now, he decided to become a Design Celebrity for a change. This is nothing new. Last year Priscilla Presley was highlighted as a designer in one of the more con-temporary showrooms. Three years ago Donald Trump had his own line of furniture on the Lexington Showroom. That’s what makes it so fun....it is so unpredictable.

A Charming Getaway to California Wine Industry’s Birthplace

Sonoma

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER 2014 61

A number of times we’ve enjoyed fun yet relaxing getaways to the picturesque town of Sonoma. As home to Buena Vista Winery, the state’s oldest commercial winery and Gundlach Bundschu, the earliest family-run winery ever established in California, the town is considered California wine industry’s place of origin. And Sonoma has many other unique distinctive

connections to our state’s early history that should pique a visitor’s interest. Consider these: For 25 days, Sonoma was the first capital of the California Republic during the Bear Flag Revolt in 1846 and where a makeshift homemade state flag first appeared; Sonoma State Historic Park includes: the Mission San Francisco Solano,

Page 64: Lavish Living Magazine September 2014

the last and furthest north mission in California and the only mission built under Mexican rule rather than during the Spanish reign; the historic Sonoma Barracks; and the founder of Sonoma, General Mariano Vallejo’s 20 acre estate and classic gothic home. www.parks.ca.gov. The 1904 Depot Park Museum, on the National Register of Historic places, provides delightful displays of yesteryear and a fine train car exhibit. www.depotparkmuseum.org. Visits to these historic landmarks will give visitors a behind the scenes look into our state’s rich cultural heritage and sometimes tumultuous beginnings. California history buffs will be especially enthralled at the wagon loads of historical background info that they’ll learn when visiting these sites.

MORE TO DO AND SEE: Wine tasting is the number one activity in town and here are four favorites. Buena Vista, rather coincidentally, was the first winery we visited in wine country many years ago and as one of our all time favorite producers of chardonnays and pinot noirs it’s often our first stop for wine tastings when heading north. It is housed in a beautiful original building and historical tours are available. After many years of iffy ownership and declining reputation, a new owner has infused the necessary capital and enthusiasm to bring the estate and cellars even beyond its’ former elite status. www.buenavistawinery.com; Gundlach Bundschu is known for premium estate bottled wines and, much to our liking, the driest Gerwurztraminer we’ve ever tasted. A seasonal winemaking tour and cave tasting is a recommended option. www.gunbun.com; Gloria Ferrer, a sibling of Spain’s Frexinet, has possibly won more awards for their premier celebratory premier sparking wines than any other California vintner. www.gloriaferrer.com; and Sebastiani Winery, one of Sonoma’s most famous vintners since the early 1900’s, has a stunning tasting complex and tour. www.sebastiani.com. Two other wonderful ways to explore the wine tasting scene in

Sonoma are to take the Sonoma Valley Wine Trolley or do the downtown wine walk where over 20 tasting rooms await. No driving worries are a major appeal of both these approaches. www.sonomavalleywinetrolley.com; For all the local wine tasting choices go to: www.sonomavalleywine.com. If wine tasting isn’t your thing, just strolling the eight acre downtown plaza, the largest town plaza in California with a beautiful historic County Courthouse, park-like setting and statue commemorating the infamous Bear Flag Revolt can fill an afternoon. Including stops at the Plaza’s surrounding trendy shops and popular restaurants is a must consideration. With four small but very colorful historic hotels still operating on the plaza, it seems that Sonoma has more of these small historic lodging properties on their plaza than any other town square in the state…maybe the country. Anyone into cars and racing will not want to miss attending an event at Sonoma Raceway, one of the most famous road-race tracks in the country featuring NASCAR, INDY CAR, S.C.C.A, N.H.R.A, motorcycle and antique car racing events. www.racesonoma.com. Ever wanted to learn to drive a race car? Well, one of the country’s finest high performance driving schools is right here. You can take courses to race your own car, a formula three racer, a state of the art go-kart or a special Audi sports car. Very

exciting stuff! www.audidrivingexperience.com. www.simraceway.com; If you bring your children, a visit to Sonoma Train Town, proclaiming to be the most well-developed quarter scale railroad in the Americas, is a nice attraction for families. And how many kids don’t like trains? www.traintown.com

WHERE TO STAY AND DINE: MacArthur Place Hotel and Spa, located within seven acres of lush gardens, is our hands down first choice for a special getaway when heading up to Sonoma. Originally a prominent three hundred acre vineyard and prestigious ranch this verdant 19th century estate has been transformed into this glorious upscale yet comfortable inn and spa. Each of the inn’s sixty-four suites and rooms are appointed with designer furnishings and suites feature fireplaces and either hydrotherapy tubs or rain showers. The original Manor House residence built in the 1850’s houses ten distinctly historic rooms, their beautiful Garden Spa offers forty different rejuvenating treatments and a nearby year-round heated pool and whirlpool are welcome respites after a day of activities. Saddles, their signature restaurant and award winning steakhouse, more than lived up to their reputation. Sitting on authentic western saddles in the lounge and bar are a genuine hoot! www.macarthurplace.com. Into B & B’s? The Inn at Sonoma will not disappoint. Although larger than most B & B’s this premier boutique style inn features fireplaces in all rooms, complimentary buffet breakfast, evening wine and hors d’ oeuvres. www.innatsonoma.com.

The agricultural bounty of the area has resulted in a vibrant restaurant scene with dining choices ranging from casual cafes to five star choices and a full range of ethnic possibilities. Here are a few of our picks: The popular Red Grape restaurant serves the best thin crust pizza we’ve ever tasted. Normally we prefer the thick crust Chicago style but we look forward to a return engagement for their great food and exceptional service. www.theredgrape.com; The Girl and the Fig is probably the most well known and critically acclaimed dining spot in town and deservedly so. Their French inspired country cuisine has received countless rave reviews….and you can add ours to the list. www.thegirlandthefig.com. Mary’s Pizza Shack is practically a local legend and is as well known for their pastas and hamburgers as they are for their pizza. And don’t forget to try their sumptuous meatballs! www.maryspizzashack.com. If you are into gourmet cheeses there are two well known producers with tasting shops in town that deserve a visit. Sonoma Cheese Factory on the square has been around since 1931 and offers a variety of jack cheeses to die for, delicious deli sandwiches and the best bar-b-q in town. Tip: grab some cheese, a sandwich and other fixins’ and head across the street for a picnic on the Plaza. www.sonomacheesefactory.com. Just around the corner on Second Street is Vella Cheese Company, a producer of award winning cheeses for over 80 years by the Vella family,

now in the 5th generation. Although not a place for lunch we thought the variety of cheeses were par excellence and reasonably priced. www.vellacheese.com.

INTERESTING SONOMA TRIVIA: In 1976, Napa Valley’s Calistoga winery Chateau Montelena shocked the world when they won best white wine in a prestigious French competition which resulted in world-wide recognition of the high quality of California wines and a major movie titled, Bottle Shock. As the first California wine to ever win such a competition, Napa received unprecedented publicity. An un-publicized fact: 80 % of the grapes for that wine came from the Sonoma area......not the Napa appellation. We found that the staff members at the hotels, restaurants and wineries provided a wonderful expression of the casual, friendly, hometown warmth that defines Sonoma. Sutter Street SteakhouseBY KATHERINE E. LEONARD PHOTOS DAN HOOD

Tucked away in the heart of Old Folsom’s Sutter Street is the elegant Sutter Street Steakhouse. Enter through the three-story building’s main doors and straight ahead you will find the Steakhouse’s entryway open and welcoming. Upon being greeted, most eyes first spot the wine room—a floor-to-ceiling center piece holding up to 1,000 bottles of flavorful wines. It is within this restaurant that you discover the delicate kinship between the beauty of wine and food, and its flavorful zest.Owner and Head Chef, Brian Knadle, and partners Mike Wear, Nick Andrews and Kevin Riley started the restaurant business in Chico nearly 14 years ago with the 5th Street Steakhouse. After years of success, he and his wife decided to open the Sutter Street Steakhouse in Folsom. The restaurant’s nearly five years of success has been circulated mostly from word-of-mouth.

Knadle wanted to make sure that the Sutter Street Steakhouse stood apart from his restaurant in Chico, yet share some of the same aesthetic qualities. So he created two different types of ambiance. In Chico, the 5th Street Steakhouse is in a rustic brick building, and has much of the same color palate as Sutter Street, but is more feminine. Their bar is long enough to occupy one wall, where as Folsom’s sits comfortably next to the entrance. Both restaurants capture natural, dark, earthy colors such as browns, reds, and maroon. Colored glass windows at both restaurants give a classic feel, both indicative to the softer feel in Chico, versus the more masculine setting in Folsom. A painting of Chico’s restaurant hangs next to a beautiful brick column in the event room—a reminder of where Knadle’s restaurant success had started. On another wall hangs an even bigger original painting of Rainbow Bridge, and emphasis on the spectacular views given at the Folsom location. With a large back patio giving sights of the American River, Rainbow Bridge, and all the surrounding arboreal beauty, the Sutter Street Steakhouse was in need of more space. So, almost a year and a half ago, they added on a quaint private room, where they host a variety of events. Wedding receptions, business presentations, financial workshops, graduation celebrations, etc., can all be booked here in Old Folsom. When usually the restaurant opens at 4:30 pm, they will hold special events during the day. The Sutter Street Steakhouse prides itself on giving their customers a personable experience. They cater to their regulars in a special kind of way by paying close attention to their likes, dislikes, and suggestions. Arrangements can be promptly made to satisfy the needs of customer’s palates. General Manager, Trenton Koller, is gratified to make these culinary wishes come true. “If

are the pan-roasted scallops or the fillet mignon. The Monday Special is also a big hit—a 6 ounce steak with a 5 ounce Maine lobster tail for $36, which would normally be priced at $50. To pair with the specials in food are the specials in drinks. The Blackboard next to the bar changes its drink specials fairly frequently. Some of the best hits are the “Moscow Mule” with Stolichnaya Vodka and Bunderberg Ginger beer from Australia, and the “Strawberry Fields”, a refreshing mix of Kettle One Vodka, St Germaine Elderflower Liquor, and Fresh Strawberry Puree. The Steakhouse also prides itself on its experimentation with different liquors. Using a variety of syrups, honeys, and absinthes are what the bartenders do best. Well- known liquors are used, like scotches, bourbons, whiskeys, and St. George absinthe from Berkeley. “Vodka is our best seller,” said Koller, “but we also sell a lot of browns.” And of course-- the wines! The wine varietals come from the best vineyards, many of which are here in Northern California. Take a 360- degree look in the nearly 15-foot high wine room, and choose a wine to sip at $7-$16 per glass while savoring the rib-eye (considered one of the best cuts of meat!) Sutter Street Steakhouse has truly made its mark in Folsom, and has differentiated itself from its sister restaurant in Chico. Whether you’re dropping in to enjoy a beverage from the extensive drink list during Happy Hour on the patio, or if you’re planning a wedding reception overlooking the natural beauty of Folsom at sunset, you can be sure to enter an environment that gives you the utmost enjoyment in a personable kind of way. “We’re really appreciative of the Folsom area,” says Koller, “We have fit right into it and we look forward to meeting more people here every day.”

someone is looking for a particular dish such as steak tar-tar, call us and give us a few days—we will personally call you to let you know when we have it,” boasts Koller. Sutter Street Steakhouse can be experimental with their items—a privilege of not being a corporate restaurant. Their seasonal menu changes quarterly to provide fresh, local ingredients. A favorite during autumn is their bacon jam with French brie flatbread accompanied with apples and balsamic vinaigrette. One of the happy hour favorites are the Sliders, which are made from the restaurant’s own prime trimmings, and are partnered with caramelized onions, arugula, Swiss cheese, and mayonnaise melted together to give a pungent, flavorful taste. Koller’s favorite dish is the Nicks Grill, New York steak with crumbled blue cheese, roasted garlic mashed potatoes, and sautéed spinach with a stone ground mustard sauce—a $40 plate of gourmet deliciousness. VINO NOCETO

WineryBY KELSEY WEHSELS

You don’t have to travel to Italy to enjoy fine Italian wine. Instead, venture to Amador County to Vino Noceto Winery where they specialize in Sangiovese, an Italian and French favorite. Owners, Jim and Suzy Gullett, decided to focus on Sangiovese, a French grape that is feminine and floral in taste, dissimilar to California’s typical strong, intense-flavored wines. The Gulletts were also taking a risk as Amador County is known for producing Zinfandel grapes, and when properly grown, California Sangiovese vineyards only produce less than 250 cases per acre. Jim always had a knack for wine ever since visiting Napa wineries as a teenager and the couple always wanted to own country property. So in September of 1984, when the opportunity presented itself, the two purchased a 21-acre plot, putting their retirement plans on hold to go into the commercial grape growing and winemaking business. In 1987, their land expanded with the acquisition of the neighboring 18.5 acres. “Fortunately when we started, all things ‘Italian’

were in an upswing. So, while we are very happy with the choices we’ve made, they required a strong commitment with no guarantee of success,” said Jim. “At this point, I suspect we can claim success!” In order to better understand wine making and producing their own wines, the Gulletts took a family trip to Italy. There, they learned how Tuscan producers grew and made their wine. Upon their return, they were convinced that Sangiovese wine could be made and produced on their Shenandoah Valley property and they began planting the

Sangiovese grapes on 2/3 of an acre in 1987 and by 1999, it had reached 21 acres. The Gulletts lived in Lafayette for 19 years, where they raised their three children; Randy, Bobby and Lindy. They moved to Amador County in 1995 after

11 years of long-distance wine-making in order to enhance the growth of their business. All three children were actively involved with the winery, and today Bobby is involved working with the wine club and the sales and marketing department. The Vino Noceto vineyard has a variety of blocks organized by vines that produce different varietals. The Dos Oakies Block, named for the presence of two oak trees, is planted with a Sangiovese Grosso clone originating from Tuscany’s Montalcino region. The Hillside Block, named for its location on the Gullett’s property, is shallow and rocky, excellent planting conditions for the Sangioveto clone (aka Sangiovese Piccolo). The Marmelatte Block is named for the type of fruit the area produces. Meaning “jam” in Italian, the Marmelatte block generates grapes that are jammy, firm in tannins with a hint of chocolate, earth, and spices. The Noce Knoll Block is made up of nine acres of Sangiovese and will be the location for the future ultra-premium Sangiovese. In all, the property has 25 acres of grapes, almost all of them Sangiovese. It also has five acres of olive trees, 200 lilac bushes and two acres of walnut trees. Vino Noceto has made a pledge to the environment and their community in a variety of ways. With the obligation to the phrase “reuse, recycle, renew,” the winery is one of only three Sierra Foothill wineries to be recognized by California’s Waste Reductions Awards Program (WRAP), and became one of the first solar-powered wineries in the foothills. The couple also serve their community through public service by serving on various councils. Jim is the current president of the Amador County Business Council, Treasurer of the Amador County Wine Grape Growers Association, and serves on the Board of the Amador County of Tourism. Suzy has served for many years as Treasurer of Amador County Vintners Associations and is the former president of Diablo Valley Hadassah and has also worked with numerous charitable organizations. “The most rewarding thing is after 25 years, we’re still here and perceived as strong, quality contributors in a very competitive industry,” said Jim. “Further, most of the time it is still fun.”

METTLER FAMILY VINEYARDS…

A TASTE OF TRADITIONBY EMILY VERBECK

The Mettler family holds a fundamental belief- as farmers and as a family- in giving back to the land, to maintain its bounty and nourish the soil to last for many generations to come. This guiding principle has afforded the Mettler family the label of Stewards of the soil- a family with a proud past while firmly focused on the future. The Mettler family has been growing grapes in the Lodi appellation since the late 1800’s when their first vineyards were planted. Sixth generation grape grower, Carl Mettler worked hand in hand with nearby universities to establish several of their vineyard sites as experimental varieties.

From this experimentation, Carl was integral in helping establish the growing conditions for specific varieties in the Lodi region. According to his family, Carl was a man of great integrity and passion for grape farming, which earned him a place in the Agricultural Hall of Fame. The veracity and sheer love with which Carl farmed his land is being carried out today by his son Larry, and his family- eighth generation farmers. Larry has continued to keep the family’s passion for excellence in the vineyard alive, and he and his wife Charlene have instilled that within their three children, Kimberly, Kelli, and Adam. Family pride and old world values

have remained with the family through these eight generations of grape growing (six generations in the Lodi area). The Mettler family has a tradition of producing premium wine grapes, both for their own label, as well as for other winemakers and respected wines. In 2001, they released their inaugural wine, Cabernet Sauvignon, to high acclaim, and they have since added Petite Sirah and Zinfandel to their portfolio of estate wines. The wines are made from selective blocks in the vineyards with a crop level controlled by minimal water use and hand thinning. The Mettlers proudly boast that their wines are an expression of where and how the grapes are grown, including the clonal choice, vineyard sites, trellis, crop management and expertise of the winemaker. Consistently recognized through awards, their wines stand up in both domestic and international competitions. “Being diversified is the key to maintaining quality control,” Larry Mettler says. “We are involved every step of the way, paying close attention to every detail.” The Mettlers have always been progressive concerning their farming techniques. They have chosen to run their farm as both sustainable and certified organic. Using integrated pest management, cover crops and composting; and disease control through trellising, shoot positioning and leaf removal, they farm land for healthy vines and consistent wine quality, thus earning their reputation as consistent leaders in farming techniques. “Embracing organic and sustainable farming keeps our vineyards nourished and viable for generations to come,” says Vineyard Manager Jason Eells. Their newly built tasting room is a must see on Lodi’s list of tasting rooms to visit. Nestled in the middle of 25 acres of vineyards, the building is shaped like a half circle around the curved tasting bar, with a 180° view through floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking an outdoor patio with bistro seating and neighboring vineyards. Guests can enjoy the willow tree shaded outdoors which features an enchanting pond and a dancing twinkle-lit courtyard. Inside, features include stacked stone pillars and rockwork of quarried gray quartzite. Tasting Room Manager, Kelli Mettler explains, “We’re a multi-generational business, and our family and brand is a blend of traditional and modern, something we wanted reflected in our tasting room.” Tasting room guests are treated to exclusive, limited-production wines, including the first white wines produced under the Mettler label. The Mettler family’s firm roots guide their operating philosophies, but they stay focused on today and the future. “This is an exciting time in the wine industry. Demand is strong, grape growing and winemaking techniques are greatly improved, producers are making better quality wine and consumers are responding by drinking more wine. Put it all together: It’s a prosperous time, and we hope it continues,” says family Patriarch Larry Mettler. “With our new tasting room, and our wine brand doing well, the next generation has a lot to look forward to.”

BOUCANES BBQ IN EL DORADO HILLS

329 E. Bidwell Street, Folsom, (916) 817-1015

BY EMILY VERBECK

Dedicated to the idea that homemade food is the best food, Boucanes comes in first in our book for southern cooking. This one of a kind smokehouse recently moved to Folsom from El Dorado Hills, and is chock full of exciting culinary combinations. Don’t believe me? Try the sweet potato pie for yourself and prepare to never want any other dessert ever again. Unlike so many other BBQ joints and smokehouses in the greater Sacramento area, Boucanes is where you great grandmother’s cooking meets the modern pallet. They pride themselves on taking historic family recipes and reworking them to keep your taste buds both pleasantly surprised and thoroughly satisfied. Tradition combined with contemporary twists? Not a bad combination at all. Between the Tri-Tip and baked beans that could win the heart of even the most finicky eater, you ought to grab your family right now and head over. You could even go alone, more for you, and I promise we won’t tell. Whether you want a night out or you’re looking to feed the masses, Boucanes is open till 7 pm most days of the week and they also cater. So next time you have a hankering for a time machine into the good ol’ days, immediately head to Boucanes, It is truly a treat.

E T I Q U E T T E FINAL THOUGHT WINE TASTING

Wine TASTINGBY EMILY VERBECK

So you don’t drink wine regularly, it’s okay. While we may not understand your choice, it’s important to stress how spoiled Californians are with good wine and amazing vineyards. If you’re not a wine drinker, it’s not a far guess that at some point one of your more connoisseur friends will drag you on a Napa weekend or Lodi day trip. And when that day comes, we don’t want to leave you unprepared. Whether you have an untrained pallet or simply don’t care about the oak after taste versus the blackberry one, there are a few simple tricks to turn your novice attitude into a weathered Wino.

RED, RED WINEOkay, so you’re more of a white wine spritzer kind of drinker, that’s fine. But before you go sticking your foot in your mouth instead of your glass, know that there are 8 major types of red wine that you’ll likely encounter. They are named as follows: Syrah (or Shiraz, depending on your company), Merlot, Cabernet, Pinot Noir, Malbec, Zinfandel, Barbera, and Sangiovese. Forgetting the name of a wine is like forgetting the name of someone you met at a party, not unforgiveable but certainly embarrassing.

THE SWIRL AND THE SNIFFIf you don’t know to swirl your glass, you may be un-teachable. But I’ll forgive you for not knowing why. Swirling your glass allows for the air to mix in with the wine particles, which gives it a fully embodied tastes. For those aspiring connoisseurs, some wines need to sit for up to an hour to reach their intended taste. Once you’ve braved the first step, you’ll need to sniff. It’s okay if you don’t get why, but the sniff introduces the taste to your pallet and helps you fully experience the wine once it’s in your mouth. Sure it’s nitpicky, but a winemaker busted his butt to get that juicy goodness just right. No need to jump in headfirst.

SIPS AND TRICKSDo not swig. You’re not a sailor and you’re not a teenager sneaking drinks. If you’re lucky enough to be enjoying fine wine, you’re going to want to draw out the process. Taking a gulp is like starting the first date with a kiss. Major faux pas. Sip just a small amount and taste it into the front of your tongue. Remember, wine tasting is a marathon not a sprint.

LINGER LONGERA true wine afficianoado knows that the real flavor is in the aftertaste of any wine. Before you start on the next tasting or opt for some food, let it sit. Enjoy the way flavor changes as it lingers in your mouth. There are whole masters degrees dedicated to studying the right chemistry that goes into the after taste, make it worth the wine makers while.

TO SPIT OR NOT TO SPITDon’t be alarmed if you find yourself among spitters. Many upscale vineyards give you so many samples of wine, they don’t always sit well in your stomach and so the tasters spit it out. You’ll be aware of the spitting, as there will be some instructions on how to do so there. However, if you’re new to wine tasting just follow the lead of your companions. Smaller places don’t spit. So sit back, drink the wine, and let the buzz of delicious flavors consume you. And, if you don’t like wine, well, leave it to those of us that do.

CHAMPAGNE CHIT CHATA latest and greatest edition to the wine and champagne family is flavored champagne and by flavors I mean almond, amaretto, and so much more. California, in all it’s beauty, if chock full of wineries in Lodi, Walnut Grove, and even on the Placer Wine Trail that are offering a personal favorite of Almond Champagne. As a vineyard lover and mimosa enthusiast, I suggest that if you haven’t tried these latest concoctions, it’s time to put the tips to the test and book yourself a trip right away. It’s only reasonable.
