I have been waiting for a long time for a magazine with the caliber of Lavish Living. It is the ideal printed media that is professional, sophisticated, yet has that sizzle that attracts a wide group of diversified readers. It has been a very effective marketing tool for my business, as it really GETS NOTICED! It has brought me lots of new business, but honestly, I absolutely love to read it and always look forward the next issue. I have advertised is so many different magazines over my 24 years in the real estate business, and find this magazine really has something that others lack. Debi Ambroff, Coldwell Banker

PUBLISHER'SLetter EDITORS NOTE
“I love how summer wraps it’s arms around you like
a warm blanket.” – Kellie Elmore
Hello Summer!Tempatures are rising, days are getting longer and time for those late summer
nights! There are so many things to be excited for as we enter into the months ahead. Maybe there's that family vacation we have been so anxiously
waiting for, or perhaps the girls night out rounds of happy hour, or even the awesome farmer's markets we anticiape every week? Either way, this time of year is all things fun! Some of my favorite memories are of boating with my friends on the Willamette River in Oregon or the six game soccer tournaments each weekend in the 100 degree heat! Much like Oregon, our community has some great outdoor activities just minutes away! Let us not forget one of the most obvious seasons we are entering into, Wedding Season! Yes, chances are you or someone you know will be attending a wedding in the near future. In this issue, we have some great advice from our area's leading bridal professionals so you are prepared to lend a helping hand if necessary or perhaps guide youself down the aisel! Not planning a wedding anytime soon? Well, we have gorgeous gowns and a fabulous stylized shoot to entertain your inner bride. Let's face it, with all the beautiful dresses and fun decor, who wouldn't want to get married again? June is also the month for Dads! In our Fab Finds, we scoured the area for some of today's most popular gift ideas for dear ol dad. Want to really spoil him? Check out our Summer Entertaining feature where we highlight tips for turning your backyard into a space the neighbors will envy! Nothing beats spending quality time with your loved ones and I'm sure a night out in the backyard grilling his favorite recipe is Dad's perfect idea of a great Father's Day! Also cooking up in this issue is a feature on one of our area's newest and greatest eateries, Aji Japanese Bistro in El Dorado Hills. The photos truly speak for themselves at this must-try restaurant. Need a weekend to getaway? Check out our feature to beautiful Catalina Island. Our travel editors have laid out a plan to have an awesome experience enjoing the sites and dining at the areas top restarants. Not sure about you, but a vacation sounds pretty amazing right about now!
Once again, thank you all for your loyal readership and I hope you enjoy the issue! See you all in July!

LovesLUCYIt’s all about fashion and fun for Lucy Wheeler, Star Stylist at Stella & Dot.
The British transplant and mother of two came to the United States in October 2009 for her husband’s job as a Senior VP of Camelot Global, a lottery and gaming company.

Although it was supposed to be temporary, his job changed and the family of four is staying. “We are now about to celebrate our 5th anniversary here,” she said. Wheeler began her career at Stella & Dot in June 2012, and has loved it ever since. “It’s a flexible, rewarding and fun business that allows a career that fits in with my family and our life,” said Wheeler. Stella & Dot is a 500-fastest growing company that allows women to be their own boss and stylist. One of the most popular events is a trunk show where clients gather friends and host a party where the stylist brings the merchandise for the women to see and try on. “The fun part is that the hostess earns free accessories simply for hosting a great girl’s night in,” she said with excitement. In fact, it was a trunk show that got this fashion expert involved in Stella & Dot. “I had so much fun and loved the social aspect of it, so I decided to give it a go,” she explained. Two years later, Wheeler has a team of over 50 women from stay-at-home moms to teachers to business women spanning four different countries. She does about 4-6 trunk shows a month, depending on availability. Since the job is flexible, it is her discretion to slow down or ramp up business based on other commitments in her life. Not limited to trunk shows, this stylist has clients who seek her advice
and guidance for a variety of occasions, including weddings, magazine photo shoots, and special events. Clients also seek out Wheeler for personal shopping purposes. The best part about styling, she says? “The smile on their face when they see their finished look – it’s amazing how radiant someone looks when they ooze confidence and happiness.” Originally attending school for advertising, she fell in love with public relations while studying advertising at Falmouth College of Arts in Cornwall, UK, specializing in copywriting. From there, she went on to work at Vogue and later became an Assistant Beauty Editor at a fashion and beauty magazine, where her love for the fashion industry grew. She went on to work in public relations, becoming a Global PR manager for 10 years. When she had her first child, she decided to take time off and a year later, she was California-bound. Despite the hot summers and missing home, Wheeler and her family are enjoying their time in the United States. “We adore our life in California,” the Brit said. “I love the proximity to great restaurants that I can step out my door and walk on trail with beautiful scenery and so much wildlife.”And the Wheelers have decided to set down roots in the area, by purchasing a home in the Folsom area. This fashionista hopes to continue her life
here in California as well as her career with Stella & Dot. “What I love most about this job is building and coaching my team – I love to see other women thrive and become successful. Stella & Dot is so much more than a job.”

Preparing for your “Big Day”. The day we all dream about...Your wedding plans go beyond the logistics of when and where. One of the most important details for any bride is preparing a timeline for all her beauty needs. Depending on the length of your engagement will determine your timeline. As a beauty expert, I recommend 6 months of preparation.
MONTH 6 Now is the time to start the process in preparing your hair for your wedding day. Hair is a form of fabric we need to treat with care for optimum health and beauty. Make an appointment with your hairstylist to plan your hair régime. You may want to grow your hair longer, try a new color, or simply get your hair in the best condition possible. If you want longer hair for your wedding and there is just not enough time to grow it to your desired length, extensions may be your answer. Your stylist can recommend a plan for you. It is never too early to start your skin care regime, however not starting soon enough may make for an unhappy bride. Consult with a dermatologist or an aesthetician. Receive monthly facials and use at home skin care products recommended by a professional. Drink plenty of water. Hydrating your skin is crucial to your makeup application looking flawless.
MONTH 3Start your wedding hair and makeup trials. I recommend using your current stylist as he/she will know your hair best. If you don’t have a stylist ask a friend for a recommendation. There are also salons that specialize in weddings. Use your trial as an interview process. This gives you plenty of time to try a few styles, so you look and feel your best. It also gives you time to find another stylist if you are unhappy with the trial results.
• Book your wedding date with your glam squad. Decide if you prefer on location or if you will be traveling to the salon.
• Experiment with self tanners or spray tans, if you want a faux glow.
• Get your brows professionally shaped. Three months is ample time to get the that perfect arch.
• Everyone wants a picture perfect smile. Consult a dentist for professional cleaning and whitening. There are some great at home teeth whitening systems if you are on a budget.
2 WEEKSCut and color your hair. This will allow time for your hair to “settle” while still looking fresh.
1 WEEK• Get your final facial or peel. It is crucial you do not try something new at this time as it may cause irritation.
• Get your brows professionally shaped again. Avoid getting your brows done the night before due to potential redness.

TRENDING with DebiMAKE MORE MONEY SELLING YOUR HOMEBY KELSEY WEHSELS
Each month we ask Lavish Living Magazine’s real estate guru, Debi Ambroff to weigh in on the local housing market trends. Here’s what she had to tell us this month about the topic of investing:
Although the number of homes sold has significantly dropped in the last six months in all the surrounding counties, prices continue to climb locally. The same goes for the rental industry; the amount of homes for rent is down, causing rent prices to go up. The reason is simple, supply and demand. “I have really noticed that sellers are acting on this and getting their homes listed for sale and the same investors are also jumping into the market to purchase a home as a rental,” said Debi Ambroff, real estate expert.
L O L LAVISH ON LOCALS
28 LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | JUNE 2014
The prediction, she claims, is that prices will increase so now is a great time to get into the market. Over the past decade, the market has shown us some incredible changes which we as consumers and investors can learn from. The investors who had the capital to buy during the recession years have benefited from the purchase and now some of those homes are coming back on the market and selling at a profit and or being exchanged for other properties. As those investors have shown, investing in the real estate business can be tedious, but financially rewarding. Good investors know how to become smart investors by understanding how the market conditions, whether up or down, work for them. Many have a relationship with a knowledgeable and experienced financial advisor who they feel are well worth the fees they charge, especially being a new investor. A smart investor must be patient
and shouldn’t buy simply to “get rich quick.” Although tempting, a new investor who all of a sudden becomes a landlord may become nervous and want to sell on a whim if there is a change in the market value, whereas a smart investor looks at it as more of a long term investment and rides it out. Looking back over the years, the market has shown us some incredible ups and downs. If you interested in the possibility of investing in real estate, consult a professional financial advisor and real estate agent as they have the most current information to educate your decision. Ambroff’s advice? “Be a hands-on investor,” she said. Always remain educated as to what is going on in the market where your rentals are located. “When you understand the forces, you will have a better control on your investments and be able to react before they become a crisis for you,” she adds.

L O L CHARITY SPOTLIGHT
June is ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclero-sis) Awareness Month, and one local charity is calling attention to the fatal neurological disease. Serving 24 Northern and Central California counties, the ALS Association, Greater Sacramento Chapter is creating awareness and offering support to those af-fected by the disorder. The Greater Sacra-mento Chapter was founded in September 1987, and in April 1989, the GSC was officially recognized as a chartered Chapter of the ALS Association, the only national non-profit, voluntary health organization committed solely to the fight against ALS. The ALS Association has dedicated more than $67 million to find effective treatments and finding a cure, and because of their tenacity in bringing awareness to the disease, there is an increased number of scientists around the globe contribut-ing to the research effort. Known as Lou Gehrig ’s Disease after the famous baseball player fell ill in 1939, ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects the brain and spinal cord. Motor neurons de-grade, no longer able to send impulses to the
muscles that usually result in movement. Early symptoms include increasing muscle weakness, especially in the arms and legs, speech, swallowing, or breathing. The disease is known to strike people between the ages of 40-70, and as many as 30,000 Americans are afflicted at any given time. You can get involved with the ALS Association GSC by making a donation at alssac.org, or by becoming a volunteer. For more information, visit alssac.org. You can also contribute by attending the ALS Assocation GSC’s dinner gala, the organi-zation’s largest fundraiser of the year. The event, themed “Beyond Wonderland,” will be held June 20 from 6pm-11pm at Arden Hills Country Club. Tickets are $100 and will include dinner and two cocktails, along with music, a live auction, and raffle. Guests are encouraged to dress in whimsical hats and attire.

Q:Q:
Q:
L O L Q & A
With Board Certified Plastic SurgeonTerry J. Zimmerman, M.D., F.A.C.S
Q:
WHAT ARE ‘STATIC’FACIAL WRINKLES? A: Facial wrinkles can be divided into two types; wrinkles that are present at all times (static wrinkles), and those that appear with different facial expressions (dynamic wrinkles). Treatment of static wrinkles begins with good skin care. (Estheticians are skin care experts and can recommend appropriate skin cleansers and exfoliants). Deeper static wrinkles can first be treated with mild to moderate chemical peels. More aggressive treatments include skin dermabrasion, laser skin resurfacing, or strong ‘phenol’ chemical peels for longer lasting results. For immediate improvement of skin wrinkles with minimal recovery, ‘fillers’ can be injected into the skin to ‘fill up’ the larger wrinkles. Lastly, skin tightening in the form of a facelift procedure can be helpful for deeper wrinkles and skin laxity.
HOW CAN ONE TREAT ‘DYNAMIC ‘ FACIAL WRINKLES?A: Dynamic facial wrinkles are wrinkles that appear when certain facial muscles of expression are flexed. The most common of these dynamic wrinkles are the ones between the eyebrows that appear when we concentrate or ‘furrow’ our brows, commonly known as the 11’s. The simplest treatment is to paralyze the muscle responsible for creating this wrinkle by administering a neurotoxin (i.e. Botox, Dysport, or Xeomen ) into the muscle. The effects should last approximately four months. This is also useful for squint lines (crow’s feet), and forehead creases.
WHAT TYPES OF FACIAL WRINKLE FILLERS ARE AVAILABLE?A: The most common class of facial wrinkle fillers is known as HA’s (Hyaluronic Acid) fillers, which is a naturally occurring substance already in our tissue. The common trade names are Belotero, Restylane, and Juvederm. These substances will typically last between six to nine months depending on the area injected.
Q:Radiesse is another product lasting a similar amount of time but indicated for deeper wrinkles. Artefil is the longest lasting filler, not naturally degraded by our system, but requires pre-injection skin testing to rule out allergic reactions. Sculptra is a common product used to fill larger areas of deficiency in the skin, but does so gradually over the period of a few months by stimulating the own bodies collagen formation, then lasts for a few years. Voluma is a newer HA product used primarily to accentuate the cheekbones and fill the temple areas. Lastly, the body’s own fat can be injected into static wrinkles for long term correction.
WHY DO WE DEVELOPWRINKLES AS WE GET OLDER?A: Wrinkles in the sin develop over time predominantly due to a loss of skin elasticity, along with loss of skin collagen and fat. Thus, our skin gets thinner, with less support beneath it, and it begins to form creases and wrinkles. Excessive sun exposure is the number one cause of premature aging of the skin (essentially cooking our elastin and making our skin ‘leathery’). Cigarette smoking is the next major cause of wrinkles of the skin (inhaling the hot smoke of burning leaves just can’t be good for us). Our genetics make up the third factor of determining how well we age.

your invitations, it could have been the clean feel of the letterpress, the soft satin ribbon or the perfect handwritten calligraphy. With your event décor it could have been the Pinterest idea you pinned years ago, the soft romantic candles, or the delicate details seen in a magazine. Here, we took notice to all things whimsical and romantic. Having experienced the whirlwind of planning a wedding, we narrowed down a list of the stand-out items every bride must prepare before the big day. The day where she remembers all the first things noticed.
With your fiancé, it might have been his brown eyes or sense of humor that you first noticed. With your gown, it could have been the flare of the skirt, the sparkle of the bodice, or the drape in the back. With your venue it could have been the imagination of a grand entrance, the blossoming rose garden or the perfectly petal-lined aisle. With

FINDING theVENUE Selecting a venue may seem as easy as liking a space or not, however there are certain logistics that go into play when selecting the location of what will most likely be the most memorable day of your life. Once engaged, the inevitable next question will always be when and where. Looking at venues a few weeks after engagement will be full of fun and excitement; you should however have a few things in mind prior to searching. Every venue will ask how many guests you anticipate and when you are looking to book. Although you don’t need to have a final guest list 2 weeks into this journey, it’s good to have an idea so you are not wasting time and fall in love with a venue that will not

accommodate your needs.
FINDING theDRESS Once you have narrowed down and selected a venue, the next step is to find the dress. Knowing your venue will actually help you focus your search on your dress. For example, will you be having a daytime ceremony on the beach? You can rule out ball gowns with long trains and dramatic embellishments. Exchanging vows in a candlelit cathedral? Avoid short slip dresses or anything that looks like it could be worn to a cocktail party. Secondly, figure out how much you want to spend, and tell the bridal consultant before she starts bringing out gowns. That way you won’t lose your heart to a dress you can’t afford. Typically, a wedding ensemble, including veil, undergarments, and any other accessories, accounts for 10 percent to 15 percent of the total wedding cost. Factor in extras, such as alterations which can add a few hundred or a few thousand dollars depending on how involved they are. Also, keep in mind it takes about four months for a manufacturer to make a dress and another two months to complete the alterations. So starting the search for the dress should be started early (like we have

to tell you twice).
SELECTING your INVITATIONS While having your venue and dress selection may seem like you have an overall feel of your wedding planned, selecting the shade of your wedding invitations is a huge step in solidifying the tone of your ceremony and reception. Remember, this is the first introduction of your event to your guests. Selecting a larger, scalloped shape with fine hand written calligraphy for example, will tell your guests the event is more formal. The more detailed the invitation, the more formal you guests can plan for. Standard enclosures to an invitation include an outer envelope, inner envelope, invitation, tissue overlay, reception card, reply envelope and reply card. Although this is a standard set, feel free to add or subtract depending on the formality of your event.
“When selecting invitations, you want to keep the overall style of your wedding in mind. You want them to reflect your overall personality; however, incorporating burlap into your black-tie affair because you love it probably isn’t the best option!” ~Gigi Mallatt, Sweet Sinsations
38 LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | JUNE 2014
DECIDING on DÉCOR This is the final and most intricate planning piece of your entire event. With a venue, dress and invitations selected, the décor will seem to fall into place. One thing to remember is to work with what you have. For example, is your ceremony in a rose garden? Save on flowers and use your natural surroundings. Choosing a theme such as a monogram, color pairing or pattern will help personalize and unify your event with standout details. These details, well placed throughout the duration of the event
will leave a memorable, custom look that goes a long way.
“A wedding style is a necessary component in the wedding planning process. It is going to help your vendors understand the look and feel you are trying to convey, and in turn, bring your vision to reality.” ~Gigi Mallat, Sweet Sinsations

In need of a backyard makeover to bring the neighbors over? Well, before you start installing an outdoor kitchen, it’s good to know some key rules to follow when creating this functional addition. We sought out trade secrets about how you might transform a porch or deck into the perfect space for dining and hosting parties.
APPLIANCES MUST SIZZLEAppliances, namely the grill or cook top, are paramount. You must have at least a functional grill or cook top that can handle the elements year round and be functional for what you plan to cook on it. We recommend Diablo Grills located in Sacramento as a good starting point. Here, they have complete steel frame sets for a “Do it Yourselfer” or knowledgeable staff to assist in custom designs. You can choose from a variety of name brands such as Weber, Fire Magic, DCS, Twin Eagles, Kitchen-Aid, Sole, OCI
and Alfresco Grills. They also carry smokers like Big Green Egg, Primo and The Good One smoker. You might also install a complete kitchen set with a microwave, dishwasher and mini-refrigerator to save space and the cleanup indoors. Having your appliances professionally installed saves on time and the hassle of fitting them between countertops and cabinets so you can start enjoying sooner!
PLENTY OF PREP SPACEFood preparation can be more convenient when done outside near the grill. This means you need to have plenty of countertop space when preparing your meal. It’s best to have durable countertops made of stone, granite or solid-surface materials
that can withstand weather conditions such as rain and the occasional winter snow. BI Design in El Dorado Hills has a large selection of solid surfaces to choose from to fit any budget and taste. Their showroom is a customer’s dream and will give you countless custom ideas. It’s also a good idea to install the cooking appliances underneath the countertops to better defend against these weather conditions. Countertop installation costs will vary depending on the scope of the project, but homeowners reportedly pay between $2,800 and $4,100 according to homeadvisor.com.
SAVE ON STORAGETo avoid multiple trips to your kitchen and make your outdoor space more homey, add some

storage space for cooking ingredients, utensils and other items. Whether you use cabinets, freestanding drawers or bins, they need to withstand the elements and be heavy enough for high winds. Wood or metal cabinets will last but should be installed underneath the counters or against the inner wall attached to the home.
WEATHER THE ELEMENTSLiving in beautiful Northern California, our climate is generally warm most of the year with mostly sunny skies – especially over this past year. However, when planning your outdoor kitchen it’s good to defend against any possible situation. Whether it’s installing a fabric awning or a whole roof over your outdoor space, you should take measures in case of rain or snow. Having these defenses will help the cooking appliances last longer, protect your investment and allow youself to eat out on nights when the weather may not cooperate with your entertaining plans.
LIGHTINGIf you plan to enjoy dinner as the sun sets, as we encourage you to do so, it will help to have the right kind of lighting for nighttime meals. Installing lights overhead or around as freestanding posts, for example, will illuminate cooking areas and create a soothing atmosphere. We highly recommend consulting with an electrician when installing your outdoor lighting. Wiring and proper placement is crucial and should be handled by a professional and in the initial stages of construction. Plan ahead when undergoing a remodel, there’s nothing worse than opening up new walls to allow adequate wiring that could have been enclosed during the initial process.
COMFORTABLE SETTINGHaving space to enjoy a meal and seating for people to relax should be a high priority in the late stages of outdoor kitchen design. You can do the traditional table and chairs, or you might put your own twist on the experience by including couches around a fire pit with coffee tables in between. You can also forego the table space and make room for more comfortable chairs. This is the perfect opportunity to make a splash of color! While the kitchen itself is safe with neutrals, bring out your personality in fabrics and pillows. Pottery World located in Rocklin and El Dorado Hills is the perfect one-stop shop for designing your entertaining space. With countless outdoor dining tables and chairs, browse their selection of unique quality décor.
ENTERTAINMENTIf your family enjoys doing activities during dinner, then you may want to consider entertainment options. You might consider mounting a TV on the wall for people to watch during meals, have friends over to watch the game, or movie nights under the starts! A fireplace or fire pit is also a staple conversation piece in the planning stages of your outdoor space. Consider gas options for a mess-free design or wood burning option for a night of s’mores! Adding entertaining options will be sure to draw in and bring your guests back for another summer night of fun!

INSPIRATIONof ColorIt is amazing how a simple color selection can have such an impact on a person and space. Not hard to believe when creating a space that is comfortable, functional and aesthetically pleasing , it will make your personal and professional life flour-ish. Ever notice the colors in a tranquil day spa and the contrasting colors in a loud, vibrant restaurant? Both completely different looks, colors and feelings. When designing a space, it is important to know the effects color creates prior to large purchases. Here again we have our Home and Design expert Sherrie Swass to tell us her knowledge and experiences she has encountered with the topics and Inspiration of Color.
CREATING A COLOR SCHEMECreating a color scheme for your home is probably one of the biggest challenges you will face in preparing to de-sign your space. According to Swass, color is one of the first issues discussed during her two hour consultation. If color is off (just like furniture placement) the whole room or rooms will be out of balance. When meeting with a cli-ent for the first time we are starting from ground level. In observing the home I usually ask if there is any art that a client absolutely loves. In most cases Swass’s clients have a lonely piece of art tucked away somewhere that is ready to come out. From that point on, a dialogue is started and a plan is formed around the colors in the piece of art. Swass also says another clue is to observe the clothes in
H O M E &D E S I G N DISCOVERING STYLE
your closet like you have never seen them before. When viewing your closet from a distance, there usually is a likeness in your color selections. This will also help pinpoint what color schemes you are most comfortable with on a daily basis.
CONSIDER YOUR ROOM’S FOCAL POINTDepicting a focal point in the room is paramount when selecting your color scheme or any design for that matter. Take for example, a fireplace. Many people ig-nore the fireplace within the room but it is actually part of the bones of your home. If you are trying to hide an outdated look, the fireplace will not go away if you change paint color surrounding it. It will on the contrary make the piece stand out more. This is true with any focal point; make sure the surrounding colors are right as this will set the mood and feeling of the entire room.
PROPER COLOR PLACEMENTIn the mood for a new look? Paint color is the most cost effective way to transform a room. The proper choices can make your space look and feel balanced or it can cre-ate havoc leaving you with a feeling of un-easiness and exhaustion. Swass reports she see’s both scenarios when entering a cli-ent’s home on an initial visit. Swass insists if using multiple wall colors within your home; make sure the darkest hues are used in the back of the home. The back of the home needs to ground and tie in the front of the home. Always use the lighter col-ors surrounding the front door if the other rooms are visible. This will help with the overall feeling of balance upon entering and walking through the space.
SHERRIE’S TIPSon COLORSELECTION
COLOR AND EMOTIONWe all need to understand what color really is. With-out realizing it, color has a genuine effect on our emotions. Color is the reflection of light and light is energy. Scientific findings show that psychological changes take place in humans when they are exposed to certain colors. Color can stimulate, depress, excite and even increase appetites when it creates a feeling of warmth or coolness. Illusions can be created by placing one color next to their complimentary color. Even identical colors can appear completely differ-ent when paired with different backdrops. This may sound a little crazy but color is a mysterious creature.
SO WHERE TO BEGIN…Swass recommends taking a mental inventory of what surrounds your space on all sides. Look up, look down and view all sides of your home. She points out, “Remember everything is connected.” Finding the underlying color that helps connect all your spaces together is the initial step. Looking at all angles is especially true when selecting exterior colors. Why have Homeowners Associations become so popular? Like it or not, they do all color selection work for us. Their guidelines eliminate brash paint colors you see in some neighborhoods. Recently Swass was asked to do a color consultation for a couple who just moved into a 6th floor loft space. Two of the four walls had wall to wall glass and very minimal window cover-ings. The adjacent walls and ceilings were concrete. For Swass, the challenge was on. They did not talk about the colors they loved. They talked about the is-sues in their space. They ended up settling on a green/grey blue color that cozied up the room, contrasted nicely with the clouds and defined their space so their fabulous oversized contemporary art will pop off the existing walls. It looks wonderful and they now can design the entire space. Color was a stopping block in their case as it is for most initially. It is knowing where to start and following a few rules to create a cohesive and well balanced space.
BLUE: Not a good food color. It can actually be an appetite suppressant. Blue can promote introspective re-flection, spirituality, cleanliness and wisdom.
GREEN: Nature, health and wealth. This color is tranquilizing and environmental.
YELLOW:The color of sunshine and brings cheer and energy into our lives. Use in small amounts because too much may make you angry.
PURPLE:Associated with royalty and sophisti-cation. Thought of as most artificial because there is little purple in nature and a popular choice among adult women. BROWN:This color is most reminiscent of na-ture and most popular among adult men. Brown is a neutral color that is often selected for furniture. RED:Symbol of love. This is the hardest color to get right for paint selection. You may feel panicked and frustrated by using too much of this color so use red as a great accent color. ORANGE: Reminiscent of warmth of the sun. Orange energizes employees and has been said to increase creativity. It also increases appetite and is best used as an accent color.
SHERRIE’S FINAL THOUGHT: Look to nature for possible color schemes, especially if you live in a home with a wonderful view. Nature has created everything we need to know about color. We just need to go with the natural flow.

Santa Catalina Island is an extremely popular vacation destination for Southern California residents and should definitely be considered more seriously by us northerners. A few of our older readers may remember the lyrics “26 miles across the sea Santa Catalina is awaitin’ me” from the hit song “26 Miles” by the Four Preps in the 50’s. The Preps style and that particular song were considered by some as major influences on the Beach Boys and the wave of surfing and beach songs that swept the country in that era and are still popular today. Since both of us grew up in Southern California we remember early on that we were excited about making that first journey out to Catalina. A high seas adventure for young kids! Although we visited it separately we both had indelible memories of those initial visits. For years we talked about making a return sojourn together but for some reason hadn’t done so. Awhile back that all changed. In the past we’ve often been disappointed by return visits to our yesteryear memories. Usually the current experience just doesn’t live up to expectations. But our joint Catalina excursion far surpassed those early memories. First of all getting to Catalina has entered a
new era of ocean transport. Instead of the slow moving ferries, Catalina Express now provides high speed jet catamarans that get you there in about an hour from Long Beach, San Pedro or Dana Point. Round trip fares range from around $60-$75/round trip and airline type seats add comfort. Upgrades are available for a special Commodore or Captain’s Lounge (think business or first class). www.catalinaexpress.com. Upon our arrival, the quaint main town of Avalon seemed much more upscale and prettier than we remembered. The promenade walkways and colorful landscaping all along the harbor have been improved dramatically. In our opinion, the overall quality of hotels, restaurants, attractions and shops has definitely improved.
WHERE TO STAY AND DINE:We opted to stay in the center of town at a charming European boutique style hotel, Villa Portofino, overlooking Avalon Bay and within footsteps of the beach. It reminded us of the charming Spanish inn that was our Barcelona hangout many years ago. The rooms were delightfully decorated- some with fireplaces and ocean views. The staff was exceptionally friendly and the roof top sun deck was a perfect

place to relax and enjoy the panoramic vistas. On our first night we dined at Ristorante Portofino and were blown away by their creative regional Italian cuisine. For complete info on packages, rates, and wonderful photos of the property go to: www.hotelvillaportofino.com . Other recommended dining spots: the award winning Steve’s Steak House, where the turf meets the surf, features nice harbor views and incredible Omaha beef. www.stevessteakhouse.com; for the ultimate in fresh seafood check out the Lobster Trap also known for tantalizing Bloody Mary’s and their happy hour. www.catalinalobstertrap.com; for funky nightlife drop into Luau Larry’s featuring casual food offerings and energy filled live entertainment. www.luaularrys.com. And keep in mind that the diversity of restaurants in Avalon offer most ethnic cuisines with a wide price range. Before we left for Catalina a friend commented “I don’t think there’s enough to do there”. Well, let us assure you, nothing could be further from the truth. Consider the following list: golf, tennis, biking, beach volleyball, hiking, beach walks, snorkeling, scuba, sailing, swimming, fishing, kayaking, camping, horseback riding, zip lining and the list goes on and on. Get the idea? As a matter

of fact we would have liked to stay at least a week instead of three days on this picturesque isle. This trip only allowed us time to take three of the island tours of the many offered. The Classic Inland Motor Tour included some of the fascinating island history. Most of you might be surprised to hear that Santa Catalina was purchased in 1919 by the well known Wrigley family from Chicago. Wrigley gum and Wrigley Field are reminders of their illustrious history. For a number of years Wrigley brought his beloved Chicago Cubs to Catalina for their spring training, but now the team is camped out in Mesa, Arizona as part of the Cactus League. A guided walking tour of the world famous art deco Catalina Casino, built in 1927 is a must. The Ballroom, Theater and Catalina Island Museum are extraordinary.
It’s interesting to point out that the Casino has no gambling. Back in that era the word casino was used to describe a “public building used for entertainment and dances”. Our guide informed us that Las Vegas was responsible for adding gambling into the casino definition. Another tour we thoroughly enjoyed was an exciting ocean rafting adventure highlighted by a lengthy close-up visit with a playful school of dolphins cavorting all around our motorized raft. This same company also has bike rentals, Jeep and Segway tours. www.catalinatours.com The Wrigley family is to be applauded for their efforts to keep their island as unspoiled as possible by donating 88% of the land to a conservancy. This will insure the preservation of most of the island’s natural interior and 48 miles of coastline in perpetuity. Members of the family remain as administrative overseers of the Santa Catalina Island Company. And for those of you who just want to relax, Catalina has plenty to do for rejuvenation. Sunning at Descanso Beach Club just steps away from the Casino, reading a book around a pool, leisure walks around the residential neighborhoods and shopping strolls through downtown are just a few of the options. We hope we don’t wait as long for our next getaway to this little bit of serene utopia on California’s only island resort.
And remember the local mantra:

AjiJapanese BistroBY MICHELLE FINDERS PHOTOS DAN HOOD
Located in the heart of El Dorado Hills, Aji Japanese Bistro captures the upscale casual elegance that follows in line with the mantra of Town Center. With two culinary superstars at the helm of this trendy new restaurant, we expect nothing less than a bright future for this emerging gem.
Aji’s opened its doors back in December 2013 and has been growing in following ever since. Executive Chef and Partner Russell Okubo and Managing Partner Nick Dedier, both Sacramento natives, came together with impressive backgrounds to open one of the area’s next great restaurants. Chef Russell Okubo’s resume includes impressive executive chef roles at The Firehouse in Old Town Sacramento and also at Fat’s Family Restaurants. Nick Dedier, who oversees the front of the house, also has an impressive resume. Growing up Nick attended Elk Grove High School where he met and started working as a server at Sumo Sushi where Okubo was the owner-chef. Dedier then attended CSUS before turning his full attention to the hospitality industry. In 2005, Nick graduated from the Culinary
Institute of America and joined Daniel Boulud in Las Vegas where he quickly worked his way up from server to Restaurant Manager and Maitre D. Later in 2007, he moved to San Francisco to assist in the management of one of the city’s most decorated restaurants, Restaurant Gary Danko. Shortly after, he was then presented with an opportunity within his mentor’s organization, The Thomas Keller Group which is best known for their world-class dining establishments, the French Laundry and Per Se. Dedier ran Bouchon for a short period of time before making the move and guiding Ad Hoc Restaurant to its current successful state. Now returning home after years of growth, the two emerged together to create an upscale yet comfortable Japanese cuisine restaurant.
S I P & S AV O R AJI JAPANESE BISTRO
Upon entering the restaurant, you are overwhelmed with a sense of sophistication and an overall pleasing ambiance. The dining room consists of booths, high and low tables, a sushi bar and an outdoor patio overlooking the lake in Town Center. Dark woods and a stained cement floor give the dining room a modern yet inviting feel. A stylish full service bar offers an impressive selection of cocktails, craft beer, wine and of course, sake. Dedier says, "Our bar is one of the best I've seen or been a part of." Aji's uses only the highest quality ingredients with a killer atmosphere. They make everything from scratch, even down to the grenadine! Simply put, Aji's creates great, quality and unique cocktails.Dedier wants to drive and raise the bar culture to the area as he offers Happy Hour seven days a week 8:30pm - close. Their extensive menu consists of full entrees, sushi, ramen, don and a selection of small plates they call “street food”. A couple stand outs on their Street Food menu that are a must try are the Lamb Lollipops served with a sweet and spicy glaze, as well as the Aji Slider which is served on Japanese toast and accompanied with fries. On their Raw Bar and Sushi menu, do not hesitate to try the cold water Pacific oysters. Served on the half shell with Aji mignonette, sriracha and garlic miso, we assure you will not be disappointed. Their House Ramen is also a staple consisting of fried shrimp, charisiu, spinach, egg, kamaboko, bamboo shoots, and sprouts. Also consider the Hamachi served with jalepano chile and house sauce presented beautifully with a punch of spice. Also worth noting is their incredible Sunday Brunch starting at 10:30am.With world renowned training and unparalleled experience, both Okubo and Dedier make a fabulous duo and created a restaurant special to El Dorado Hills. The service and precision of their dishes are unmatched and worth making the trip to see them. This summer enjoy a taste from the far east as we promise you will not be disappointed.

BUTTERFLY CREEK
WINERYBY KIMBERLY HORG
The gateway community to Yosemite National Park, provides the perfect setting to grow wine grapes with clean mountain air and spring water penetrating the Sierra Nevada soil. Butterfly Creek Winery in Mariposa offer visitors a quiet retreat into the mountains and vineyards for an afternoon of fun. Butterfly Creek grows four varietals of red wine but has a small amount of Chardonnay grown by the creek on its 200 acre property. It has 20 acres of grapes that were first planted in 1984. John and Colleen Gerken founded the winery and in 1994 their son, Bob Gerken, became the winemaker. It is now the only vineyard/winery in Mariposa County with a tasting room at the actual vineyard. Butterfly produces 2500 cases annually. Its Merlot is the most popular so is made in larger quantities than other wines including the Cabernet and Zinfandel, which are produced in smaller batches. Cabernet is rich and medium-
bodied wine which has a bold flavor of oak and pepper, with hints of berries. “I love Cabernet. If I need a moment to myself I take a walk in the Cabernet vineyards,” he said. The Merlot is a not too strong red wine with vanilla, oak, and rich blackberry flavors. Zinfandel has oak complexity and fruit flavors of the Sierra Foothills. The Campfire Red is full-bodied Estate Reserve blending 85 percent Merlot, 10 percent Cabernet and 5 percent Zinfandel. Its only white, the Chardonnay is light and refreshing. It has a fruity taste to it with a hint of grapefruit and a crisp finish. Its newest release is its 2013 White Merlot. The popular varietal is light, fruity with a cherry finish that is served chilled. “We make wines the old fashion way. Not too complex and keep it simple,” he said. An old fashion winery with an old fashion chapel that sits on the hill was built to honor its family’s
roots. The founder’s brother was a priest so the small wedding chapel was built among the vineyards on site. The winery holds a lot of weddings so to better serve its guests it plans to build a bed and breakfast by its chapel. If one can’t make the journey to the mountains a regular supply of wine can be shipped to a home or business. Wine lovers can join its wine club to receive three two-bottle wine shipments per year in spring, fall and winter as well as 20 percent discounts on all wine and Butterfly Creek logo merchandise, first notifications of new releases and special offers and exclusive invitations to special “VIP Wine Club” events at the winery. Members can also pick up shipments at the winery to save on shipping costs. Each order has a complimentary gift included. Wine enthusiast can picnic by it Butterfly Creek and tour the winery Tuesday through Sunday from 11a.m. to 5 p.m. or by appointment. It has entertainment throughout the year and wine club parties.

L CAL LODI WINES
S I P & S AV O R WINE PICKS | LODI
THIS MONTH'S PICK FROM LOCAL LODI WINERIES.
A spur of the moment, whimsical leap of faith, led Larry and Teri Lawrence to make a life changing decision to buy a winery. A realtor by trade, Lawrence talked over his listing with his wife and because the two were looking for a new challenge, the stars aligned to create new owners for Viaggio on the River Estate and Winery. The winery originally opened in 2009 but the couple has owned it since May 2012. It wasn’t a lifelong dream but has become a fantastic adventure to reinvent a secluded elegant winery nestled among walnut orchards and the Mokelumne River. Teri Lawrence puts all of the fruit of her labor in her winery because she is her third year of winemaking. She is a microbiologist licensed with the State of California and a biochemist, who graduated from UC Davis. The new winemaker hired a personal wine consultant to further enhance her wine making abilities. Lawrence says although she loves the entire experience of making wine, it is a great feeling to make a good varietal. “I love the hard physical work, the mental challenges of ‘getting it right,’ but I guess my favorite is when the tasting begins and you know you nailed it,” she said. The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon just won a bronze medal in the Finger Lakes International Wine Competition in New York and it is currently the biggest seller. The 2012 Tempranillo was just released a couple weeks ago and has great reviews. The 2013 Pinot Grigio called “Summertime” will be released in June. Lawrence is bottling a 2012 Barbera which will be released around July. She
is also bottling a 2013 Chardonnay, which promises to be oaky and buttery, a 2012 Estate Zinfandel as well as a 2012 Old Vine Zinfandel next month. Her personal favorite is Old Vine Zinfandel. According to Lawrence her wines are unique not only because it is made by a woman but also because it is fruity yet bold, but at the same time smooth. “My wines are great with a meal, but also very ‘sippable,’ which is important in California,” Lawrence said. The winemaker also makes a sparkling wine, not too sweet or dry, a 2010 Merlot Reserve aged in oak that is a full flavored wine with hints of spice and dark fruit and a Zinfandel Dessert Wine made from a late harvest Zinfandel infused with Brandy. “Our wines are fast becoming known as some of the best in the Valley, and we have the most absolutely breathtaking venue on the Mokelumne River, in the Valley,” she said. She says the winery is incredible and photos do not do justice, one must stop by to experience the wine and atmosphere.

The Lodi winemaking industry has enjoyed tremendous expansion in the last decade. The land devoted to vineyards has increased from 46,000 acres in 1996 to nearly 100,000 today. Now the region produces more fine wine than Napa and Sonoma combined! The Lodi appellation is proudly blowing away the mists of anonymity that have shrouded local wines, allowing them to bask in the sunshine of worldwide recognition. We invite you to take a short ride and discover Lodi Wine Country for yourself.
S I P & S AV O R SEASON DELIGHT
Summer breeze is in the air and the fragrant basil leaf has finally come back in season. Foodie’s everywhere are likely buying by the fistfuls at local farm-ers markets, grocery stores, and co-ops. With the massive health benefits and breadth of recipes, we are not surprised. The health benefits of Basil begin with vitamins, and a whole lot of them. A single serving, just 1-2 leaves, can have nearly 97% of your daily need for Vitamin K. If you’re not familiar with that one, it’s the vitamin that protects your whole immune system, includ-ing your DNA. That means, it’s been proven to prevent mutations that cause cancer and other autoimmune diseases. As if that isn’t amazing enough, ba-sil’s vitamin components help your body regulate toxins and free your body from harmful free radicals.
Basil in itself is a simple herb but when used in the right recipes, it has the power to satisfy any palate. From being an excellent additive for iced green tea or gourmet lemonade, to being the primary part of pesto, Basil does it all. For those of you looking to boost your immune system or trim your waist, try infusing a pitcher of water with fresh basil leaves and lemon overnight. For more food minded readers, basil is great for Italian and Mediterranean reci-pes. If you’re not using it already, do a little research or buy your very own basil plant. The fresher this green gem is, the more delicious.

SEASON DELIGHT
BASIL BY EMILY VERBECK
66 LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | JUNE 2014
PESTO:INGREDIENTS 1 large bunch of basil, leaves only, washed and dried 3 medium cloves of garlic One small handful of raw pine nuts Roughly 3/4 cup Parmesan, loosely packed and FRESHLY GRATED A few tablespoons of extra-virgin olive oil
SPECIAL EQUIPMENT: large mezzaluna for chopping
DIRECTIONS: Start chopping the garlic along with about 1/3 of the basil leaves. Once this is loosely chopped add more basil, chop some more, add the rest of the basil, chop some more. I scrape and chop, gather and chop. At this point the basil and garlic should be a very fine mince. Add about half the pine nuts, chop. Add the rest of the pine nuts, chop. Add half of the Parmesan, chop. Add the rest of the Parmesan, and chop. In the end you want a chop so fine that you can press all the ingredients into a basil “cake” - see the photo up above. Transfer the pesto “cake” to a small bowl (not much bigger than the cake). Cover with a bit of olive oil, it doesn’t take much, just a few tablespoons. You can set this aside or place it in the refrigerator until you are ready to use it. Just before serving give the pesto a quick stir to incorporate some of the oil into the basil. She oc-casionally thins the pesto with a splash of pasta water for more coverage, but for our gnocchi this wasn’t necessary.Makes about 1 cup.

BASIL MARGARITASMakes 1 pitcher, or about 8 servings1 can (12 ounces) frozen limeade concentrate 10 strawberries (or 12 if you’re using smaller ones from the farmer’s market or your backyard.) 8 basil leaves 2 to 2 1/2 cups tequila (gold or silver)
DIRECTIONS: Empty the limeade concentrate into a pitcher. Add 2 1/2 cans of water and 1 1/2 (18 ounces, or 2 1/4 cups) cans of tequila (or a bit less, if you don’t want your drinks to be quite as strong).Hull the strawberries, slice lengthwise, and add to the pitcher. Crumple the basil a little in your hands (this will help the basil flavor release into the drink) and add it to the pitcher, too. Place the pitcher, covered, in the fridge overnight, or for at least four hours. When you remove the pitcher from the fridge, your margari-tas will be a lovely pale pink color. Now all you have to do is serve them and wait for the compliments to pour in.

E T I Q U E T T E FINAL THOUGHT WEDDING INVITES
BY EMILY VERBECK
WeddingINVITESWedding invitations: the activity that requires you to weed out the social circle and make peace with family. Now, before you go handing out invitations to your wedding like olive branches, make sure you’re nurturing the right invitees rather than sealing the social suicide of your bridal affair. The following are a few groups to consider before you finalize the prenuptial agreement of who to choose and who to loose.
FAMILY FIRSTWhile I am confident you don’t need a reminder to include family in your matrimony, the worst faux pas is not sending an invite to the VIP. Your mom may stuff envelopes and practice calligraphy till her hands are bleeding to address those little suckers, but that doesn’t discount the gesture of sending her an invite as well. And I don’t mean handing her one to keep, but signed sealed and delivered. She brought you into the world.
OPEN SOURCING THE OFFICEThe most common question asked is who to invite from your workplace. Really there is no straight answer except to consider how close your co-workers feel to you. While you may care less about their newest cat or one night stand, if you’re cozy enough to spill the beans at happy hour, an invite becomes a professional courtesy. Besides, getting chummy with your boss never did anyone any harm.
THE DISTANT COUSIN, TWICE REMOVEDIf you don’t know them, don’t invite them. It doesn’t matter if your grandma grew up with her uncle’s sister-in-law’s cousin. If you’re on a tight budget, don’t waste the effort on people you’ve never met. If the explanation of relationship is longer than your name, don’t bring them in on the game.
YOUR FIRST CRUSH Don’t. Don’t. Don’t. I know you think your ex is your friend. And I am confident that he’s a truly inspirational compatriot but really, he probably isn’t. If you’ve included an ex on your list, nix him immediately or come wedding day, there will be drama to fix. You’ve chosen a different mate, if you’re still thinking of bringing a past flame in on the bacon, maybe it’s time to reevaluate your nuptials before the legally binding paperwork is signed.
PROVIDING PLUS ONEThe fact of the matter is, no one wants to dance alone. While it tightens the budget to allow dates, you’re celebrating choosing a life-long mate so let everyone else in on the fun. If you are hoping for a party, then you better make sure those attending are allowed to spread a little love as well.
DEPLORABLE CHILDREN No, you don’t have to invite your aunt’s screaming child. You don’t. In fact, oftentimes adults only is a perfectly acceptable way to go. That doesn’t mean there won’t be backlash. However, if you’re feeling brave enough to take even the little monsters on, make sure you include some activities and party favors to tame the beasts or else, it’s your toasts that will miss the party.
