Broker Nick Sadek of NRS Luxury Estates, renowned locally for selling Eddie Murphy’s Estate in Granite Bay, is on a roll. He is actively selling multimillion-dollar luxury homes throughout Placer, Sacramento, and El Dorado counties. Nick has lived in the Sacramento region since 1979, so it is is a region that he knows extremely well. He obtained his real estate license in 1986, beginning his career with Carmi-

chael-based Great Western Real Estate. In 1988 he branched out on his own, establishing NRS Luxury Estates. When Sacramento Bee featured Nick on the front page and labeled him the six million dollar man with his listing of the former Eddie Murphy Estate, his reputation and luxury listings hit an all time high when the market was at an all time low. He has proven over and over that with the right strategy and marketing anything is possible. Much of the business stems from his ability to package creative deals that benefit both buyer and seller. “Sincerity and honesty go a long way.” He attributes his philosophy and work ethics to his upbringing that his father and mother instilled on him at an early age. He credits his success to his hands on approach and his focus on building a rapport with each and every client. Nick goes the extra mile, getting to know his clients and their needs. Nick also goes to great lengths to ensure he’s always available to his clients, as he understands that there’s a premium on accessibility. Although he focuses on the luxury buyer and sellers, Nick also specializes in commercial property. “I believe that it’s essential to keep my

clients updated on all of the latest developments. Many clients are unfamiliar with the process and don’t know quite what to expect, but I’ve found that keeping the client

informed is a wonderful way to avoid stress, eliminate uncertainty, while ensuring the real estate transaction is as smooth and painless as possible.” He always keeps the client and their needs in mind, even introducing clients to new investment opportunities and keeping them apprised of other projects that may be of inter-

est, even after their initial transaction has been completed. Selling a home in today’s market can be challenging –

NRS Luxury understands that. While the market can be unpredictable, hundreds of homes are sold each

week. What’s the difference between selling your home or failing to do so? The Details! Whether it’s Nick’s proven sales approach, effective mar-keting campaigns, or utilizing our existing net-work, he goes that extra mile. When he’s not working with clients, Nick can be found spend-ing time with his family. Dina his wife , who is also a licensed realtor. They have two children: Adam, age 11, and Dayna, age 16.

Cheers to2015!

Now that the whirlwind of the holidays is over, I like most this time of year find myself looking ahead and pondering my inevitable New Year's resolutions. I seem to always have the same goals every January, and

unfortunately tend to loose sight of them months later. This year as I try to pick out the areas in my life that need a little TLC, I found myself looking back just one short year ago and was astonished the difference just 365 days can make. The amount I have learned and grown personally and professionally is incredibly encouraging as I head into 2015, and I find myself excited to face the challenges that lie ahead. Rather than picking out specific resolutions, my plan is to continue growing and evolving with what life and business throw my way. I learn something new with each passing day, so my goals and resolutions are going to be much more fluid this year. A fresh start, new opportunities and finding balance in life is what I look forward to most. If your resolutions include getting back into shape, be sure to read our Putting the Fun Back into Fitness feature! We covered our areas best and highlighted some entertaining and trending activities that are also a great way to get back into those skinny jeans and shed the holiday pounds! Also being introduced this issue is our cover story, The Essential Transitional. This month our friends at Button Up Boutique have provided us the essential transitional piece that can be worn in the day and easily be transitioned into a stunning nighttime look. Interested in trying out a new fabulous restaurant? Flip over to our Sip and Savor Opener, The Farmhaus, in Granite Bay for an incredible dining experience, plus much, much more! This issue is all about feeling good, living a healthy lifestyle and celebrating the new year together! Here's to all of you as we forge into 2015, let's make it a good one! As always, thank you for your loyal readership and see you all in February!

Cheers!

Cheers to Summer!

There are so many things to love about this time of year. The hot weather, late days, cool drinks, fun in the sun, backyard barbeques and good times with friends and family are what come to mind most. With the kids out of

school, there is no better time to pack up and take advantage of all the fun things to do around our community. We are surrounded with gorgeous scenery from the rolling golden hills to beautiful Folsom Lake; the outdoors are our playground, go enjoy it! Our Charity Spotlight this month declares July as National Parks and Recreation month, so pack up that picnic basket, the kids, and enjoy a picturesque day outside! This issue of Lavish, we tried to encompass all things summer. With temperatures soaring into the triple digits, we took our search indoors to find the ultimate summer cocktail! We were fortunate enough to be introduced to six awesome bartenders who wowed us with their creations. Besides taste testing through these pieces of art (tough job, we know...) we got to meet some incredible people who express their passion in every glass. I strongly encourage you to pay them a visit, you will not be disappointed! Appearing on our cover this month is our Sweet Summer Days fashion spread. Although the shoot fell on the hottest day of the year to date, we had a blast with the help from Larry Barrett at Lucky's Land and Sea. Larry provided the gorgeous boat we shot and also coordinated a friend to drive us around the lake to take some incredible water shots. Everything you see in these photos are for sale, including the boat! I could not be more thankful of Larry and the Lavish team for sticking it out that day! It was a scorcher! In line with the heat this month, we have selected out Getaway to the amazing Phoenix, AZ. Just a short plane ride away, this oasis amidst the desert is an incredible option for relaxation and adventurers alike. Also spotlighted this month is Back Wine Bar & Bistro in Folsom. If you have not tried this restaurant, I'm sure the photos will entice you to try them out! As always, thank you for your loyal readership! and I hope you all enjoy this fun issue! See you in August! THE BIG BANGwith Chris Merrick

BY KELSEY WEHSELS | PHOTOS CRISTIAN MORINICO

The Big Bang, more than just a popular television show, is where Chris Merrick creates and designs special events. A Sacramento native and owner of the floral and event design studio, Merrick, has always had a knack for ingenuity and creativity.

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | JANUARY 2015 15

Page 18: Lavish Living Magazine January 2015

After attending a private design college in Sacramento, he obtained his degree in interior design and began working for clients doing show houses and model homes. Becoming dissatisfied, he began working in floral design, which developed into event design. In 1996, Merrick opened The Big Bang in downtown Sacramento. “I was scared to open my own business,” he said. “But so many people encouraged me to do it, so I just jumped right in.” The name of the business came from Merrick’s partner who believed in the concept of creating something from start to finish. The business specializes in weddings, but do every occasion from bar mitzvahs and birthday parties to corporate events. Their latest event was The Crocker Ball held at The Crocker Art Museum last month for 400 guests. One of the most intriguing events The Big Bang did was for a New Years Eve party at the Sacramento Convention Center in 2000. “It was a lot of work, but it was so much fun!” he said. The Big Bang has done events all over California and will be designing a corporate event in Newport Beach this month. Merrick admits that given the chance to do something outside of California, they would. Merrick and his team consult with clients at their office in downtown Sacramento where they discuss the look and feel of the event. Although the event designer admits he has had to change some client’s minds, they are never disappointed. “I do this for a living, so I know what I’m doing,” he said. “All I really do is embellish on their own ideas.” While there used to be a slower and busier time for The Big Bang, things are picking up, designing between 6 to ten events a month. “We are busy all the time,” said Merrick. “That’s really good because not a lot of people can say that.” And although

L O L LAVISH ON LOCALS

he admits the hours are long, his job is extremely satisfying. “I love the gratification I get when I see the finished product and I know the client is happy,” he said. “I have acquired a lot of friends and retained a lot of loyal clients. I feel very lucky.” The pace the company is at is a good one for Merrick, as he does not want to overwhelm himself and

his team, especially taking the fun out of each project. “I love it, it’s my life,” said Merrick. “I don’t know what else I would do.”

Encouraging and inspiring women is Cynthia Bazin’s life goal. As the President of SmartChic, a premier mentoring company for women, Bazin uses her passion and expertise to assist women in transforming their lives to have authentic success and happiness. “It’s about bringing the confidence and passion out of you,” she said. “It’s about teaching you how to make smart choices so you know you are going on the best and straightest path to achieve long-term success.” She began her journey when she achieved high level positions in the Connecticut prison system. With her knowledge and expertise, she went on to become a private investigator in Las Vegas, running a security and corporate investigations unit in the hotel, casino and resort industry. With her 20 years of experience and armed with a Master’s Degree in counseling psychology, Bazin decided to use her passion and gifts to inspire and encourage women. Several clients have recognized the success that Bazin has had in their lives. “Thanks to Cynthia’s skills, professionalism, committment, and positive attitude,

I have a solid plan in place which really keeps me focused and moving forward in a steady pace on accomplishing all of my goals,” said France Adamus, freelance project manager for advertising and communications. SmartChic offers a variety of services. The most common is the one-on-one mentoring service where you can meet with Bazin via phone, Skype, or in-person. For a more vigorous program, there are VIP days and retreats where you can meet with Bazin in wine country for a day or a full weekend for relaxing and recharging. She also offers a motivational program for small groups, large meetings and group retreats.“Every day we have a choice on what we put our mind to,” she said. “And what we put our mind to is where we put action to.”

TRENDING with Debi2015 PREDICTIONS FORTHE REAL ESTATE MARKETBY DEBI AMBROFF

This past year flew by at an incredible pace here locally. The prediction for 2015 is that home values will continue to rise, but more slowly than 2014. Home price trends vary quite a bit at local levels. For example, they are rising rapidly in some U.S. cities like San Francisco and the Bay Area, while still declining in other cities. There is no such thing as “the” housing market, when it comes to pricing trends. It’s definitely a local thing!

With that being said, national averages such as the S&P/Case-Shiller Home Price Index do serve as a general indicator of where things are headed. And they’ve been headed upward for some time now. According to the latest Case-Shiller report, published in late 2014, prices nationwide rose 5.6% over the last year or so. But that’s in the rear-view. What about going forward? Here’s some real estate predictions

L O L LAVISH ON LOCALS

Page 28: Lavish Living Magazine January 2015

for 2015 regarding home prices: CoreLogic released their latest “HPI Forecast," which includes predictions for monthly home-price gains, as well as annual pricing trends. According to the report, the economists and analysts at CoreLogic expect U.S. home prices to rise by 5.7% between July 2014 and July 2015. (Coincidentally, that’s about how much they rose from July 2013 to July 2014, according to the Case-Shiller index.) CoreLogic’s forecast mirrors the more conservative outlook of many other economists, when compared to last year. The general consensus still is that residential property values will continue rising in 2015, but at a slower pace than what we have seen over the last 12 months. According to Zillow, the biggest price gains over the next year will occur in California and the Southwest. The real estate information company has an interactive forecasting tool that can be adjusted based on the projected increase (or decrease) in home values, and according to their data, double-digit increases will be limited to a handful of cities in California and the Southwest. Zillow projected 10-15% gains in 2015 and claimed there are 12 cities that could experience double-digit price gains over the next 12 months or so, which includes ten cities in California, along with Reno and Las Vegas, Nevada. In 2014, I had several sellers who relocated to Reno, Las Vegas and to Texas for less cost of living and huge savings on taxes. El Dorado County will still experience some traffic in sales the first quarter of this year from for those buyers racing to meet the March 31, 2015 deadline to transfer their Prop 90 Tax Base to El Dorado County. What about mortgage rates for 2015? Mortgage rates will hover below 5% for most of 2015. Freddie Mac, the now-government-controlled corporation that buys and sells mortgage securities, conducts a weekly survey of mortgage rates being offered by lenders in the U.S. They also make various forecasts relating to the housing industry. That being said, if you are thinking about selling, DO NOT put off contacting your favorite local realtor now. Get a current estimate of value, as the first quarter of every year we have the lowest amounts of inventory and if you are thinking you want to relocate or move up or maybe buy down in your local area, this is THE BEST TIME to get a premium for your home.

NATIONALCervical CancerAWARENESS MONTH

BY KELSEY WEHSELS

C H A R I T Y S P O T L I G H T

With a new year comes new begin-nings and reflection on the future. One issue to keep in mind is cervical cancer as January is National Cervical Health Awareness month. The National Cer-vical Cancer Coalition, a program of the American Sexual Health Asso-ciation, is an organization dedicated to assisting women and loved ones af-fected by the disease. Their mission is “to help women, family members, and caregivers battle the personal issues re-lated to cervical cancer and HPV and to advocate for cervical cancer health in all women by promoting prevention through education about early vac-cination, Pap testing and HPV test-ing when recommended.” Founded in 1996 as a grassroots nonprofit organi-

zation by Randi and Allen Kaye, the NCCC now includes thousands of members around the world. The couple started the association when they worked at a women’s health laboratory, and becoming concerned for women who suffered from HPV dis-ease/cervical cancer, they started the NCCC. The Kaye’s battle with can-cer continued when in 1998, Randi, although not a smoker, was diagnosed with lung cancer. Raising awareness about the disease, they marched on Washington DC in 1999 to encourage additional funding to fight the war on cancer. The pair had a passion for help-ing people struggling with cancer and Randi humanized the disease by claim-ing, “No person is a statistic.” Their

fervor and hard work created an or-ganization, complete with 32 chap-ters in 22 different states. Along with phone and email partners, videos on HPV and cervical cancer, locations for free or low cost pap smears, the NCCC also offers awareness through The Quilt Project. These quilts, de-signed and made by, or in memory of, women who have battled cervical cancer, serve as a public education initiative to highlight the impor-tance of early detection and preven-tion by becoming a focal point and powerful visual aid. Quilts can be found all over the country, displayed in hospitals, cancer centers, clinics, and at professional women’s confer-ences. (To request or donate a quilt, visit http://www.nccc-online.org/index.php/quilt-project). More than 12,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with cervical cancer each year, and half of the women diagnosed with the illness are between ages 35 and 55. Since a Papanicolaou test (pap smear) is the best method to diag-

nose, regular screenings are impera-tive for early detection, and because of increasing understanding and healthcare advancements, cervical cancer is now the most preventable type of cancer. Human papilloma-virus (HPV) is found in about 99% of cervical cancers. There are over 100 different types of HPV, but not all cause cancer. According to the NCCC, by age 50, approximately 80% of women have been infected with some type of HPV, and the majority of women infected with HPV virus do NOT develop cervical cancer. For most women, the HPV infection does not last long; 90% of HPV infections resolve on their own within 2 years. To donate to the NCCC, visit nccc-online.org/index.php/donate.

everday healthy practices5

There’s a lot of things we do that we know are good for our health: take vitamins, eat our veggies, and get an adequate amount of exercise. But what about the things we do on a daily basis that we didn’t know were good for us? Believe it or not, there are a variety of daily tasks that contribute to our overall health.

LaughingAccording to some psychologists, laughter is not just beneficial for your emotional health, but your physical health as well. In a study conducted at the University of Maryland, laughing was proven to increase blood flow when participants were divided into two groups, one watched a comedy, and the other a drama. The group that watched the drama had restricted blood flow, whereas the group that watched the comedy had blood vessels that contracted normally. According to Robert R. Provine, professor of psychology and neuroscience at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and author of Laughter: A Scientific Investigation, studies have also shown that laughing increased the levels of infection fighting cells. And in Norman Cousins’ memoir Anatomy of an Ill-ness, watching comedies not only relieved him of pain from Ankylosing Spondylitis, a painful spine disease, but also allowed him to sleep better as well.

Brushing Your TeethOf course your dentist will tell you brushing your teeth is good for your dental health, but there are other health benefits to this daily routine as well. The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) published findings from a study conducted in January 2011 that correlated periodontal disease with respiratory disease, revealing the bacteria responsible for periodontal disease increased the risk of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and pneumonia. Brushing teeth could also curb your appetite and help your waistline. There is a mental trigger you send to your brain when you brush your teeth, signaling meal time is over, reducing your appetite. Believe it or not, it is also a decent exercise. By brushing your teeth 3 times a day for 2 minutes, you will burn 3,500 calories a year. That’s one pound, just by brushing your teeth!

HuggingIt’s nice to be hugged once in a while, but did you know it could also be good for your health? When we hug someone, our pituitary gland releases oxytocin, the hor-mone responsible for social memory and attachment, sexual and maternal behavior, human bonding, and trust. It also lowers cortisol levels, the hormone responsible for stress, high blood pressure, and heart disease. According to Matt Hertenstein, experimental psychologist at DePauw University in Indiana, hand-holding and hugging is a major stress reliever. “Having this friendly touch, just somebody sim-ply touching our arm and holding it, buffers the physiological consequences of this stressful response [referring to rising cortisol levels],” he said in an interview with NPR. Hugging also stimulates the brain to release dopamine, the neurotransmitter responsible for pleasure.

Listening to MusicIt may sound silly that listening to music can be good for your health, but it’s true. In fact, there are various ways that simply plugging in your headphones and listening to some tunes can benefit you. First, it can ease pain. In a German study published by the U.S. National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health, listening to music decreased the amount of anxiety in patients that orally administered Midazolam, a drug used for inducing sedation. The article claimed that due to its relaxing influence, music should be played for patients recovering from surgery, especially open heart surgery. Listening to music can also improve cognitive health. In a 1997 study completed at Middlesex University in England, test takers who listened to music, were able to answer more questions and answered more questions correctly than their non-music listening counterparts. According to a 2013 study conducted by German and American psychologists, music also has the ability to elevate mood. Participants claimed “arousal and mood regulation” and “self-awareness” were the two main benefits of listening to music.

ReadingPicking up a magazine or investing in a library card could be good for your health. Why? Reading has been proven to be a major stress reducer, and in a study conducted in 2009 by Mindlab International at the University of Sussex, reading beat out listening to music, enjoying a cup of tea or coffee, and even going for a walk as the best stress reliever. Not only does reading help relieve stress, but it could help you sleep better too. Sleep experts recommend reading as the best de-stressing routine before going to bed to get restful sleep. Reading can also help prevent mental disorders in later life. According to the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, adults who engage in mental exercises, such as reading or puzzles, are less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease. Think of the benefits just from reading this article!

DINING OUTwith Nick

GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR DINING EXPERIENCEBY NICK DEDIER

In restaurants there is a secret exclusive world that most people have never experienced first hand. It lies behind a door that is hidden in plain sight. There is no password, there is no cypher and there is no sphinx or riddle laying at the entrance to the VIP club. Instead it is guarded by a simple handshake, a sincere smile and a strict code of conduct. Once on the inside you’ll not only triple the value of your dining dollar but you find that you can amplify every dinner or hotel stay into an actual “experience.” In a restaurant or hotel where the staff and managers float with purpose among a sea of nameless faces, the trick is standing out and being noticed. While there are many ways to accomplish this simple task (such as the “bull in a china shop” or “the squeaky wheel who gets the grease”) there really is only one effective method that is recognized by every hospitality professional, universally, the world over...

THE GOLDEN RULE.

Treat others the way that you want to be treated. It may sound simple and obvious but trust me, nothing will make you more singular, loved and respected in a place where you’re spending a good deal of time and money. Below are a few beginners tips to quickly crack into “the club.”• Carve out a bit of extra time to be patient. In a busy and bustling dining room there is nothing more amazing than the guests who just go with the flow.• Smile and Be Nice. (I doubt this requires explanation) • Your service staff can be your best friend. They’ll go out of their way to bring you anything you could possibly ask for as long as you treat them with kindness and respect. When someone is taking your order or checking you in be polite and give them the 2 minutes of attention they need so that they may understand your needs and requests and get your order ship shape. • If something goes wrong, stay calm! You will, without doubt, catch more flies with honey. • Be open minded, even in a place you have been dining in forever. Take a chance, look at the server (smile) and say “you pick something for me.” Going out on a limb could be the best thing to happen to you. Sometimes going “along for the ride” can be invigorating and the bottom line is; good servers know their restaurant and they will be thrilled to show off for you, if you let them. • Finally introduce yourself with enthusiasm. Saying something to a server along the lines of “We are thrilled to be here” will open up the hospitality flood gates.• It’s pretty simple; the more approachable you are as a guest, the harder a restaurant will try to woo you and make you swoon for what they do. Good restaurants are always professional and try their hardest everyday in every way for every guest. However, you’ll be surprised how far a simple handshake, a smile and genuine interest in the people, food and beverage will get you. Hospitality is an art and every restaurant has a specific brand that they want to show off to people who will appreciate it. In a room of casual diners you’ll quickly start feeling that warm & cozy VIP blanket being wrapped around you; with maybe even some off-menu items being made available with wink and a smile.

Whether you’re running for fun, personal achievement or charity, there is always a

good reason to strap on the running shoes and hit the pavement. Improving your health

is certainly one of them. In fact, there are various health benefits from running. A

20-year Stanford University study found that running delayed the onset of cancers,

neurological diseases, infections and other leading causes of death. While running,

the body produces endorphins, a hormone that’s primary function is to reduce the

transmission of pain signals to the brain. However, the hormone has also proven to help

slow the aging process, relieve stress and anxiety and boost the immune system. While

there are so many to choose from, we highlighted a few fun runs to try out this year.

It is certainly not common for five best friends to all get married in the same year. But even more special for these new brides was the chance to put their gowns back on for one more photo shoot, recreating each of their special days together. Not needing their dresses any more, the ladies were allowed to let loose and have some fun, no longer worrying about trashing their gowns. Shot during the “Golden Hour,” and set against a rolling hills backdrop,

BABY BOOMER’SContribution On Our Society

BY KELSEY WEHSELS

S E N I O R L I V I N G FEATURE | BABY BOOMERS

Baby boomers, the post-WWII generation that brought us Oprah Winfrey, Steve Jobs, Ronald Reagan, Madonna and Steve Wonder, has arguably made the largest impact on contemporary American culture. Known as “Generation X,” these people have made a positive influence in society from their activism in social change, advancing health care technologies, creating new music genres and stimulating the economy.

Social ChangeIt was the boomers who were not only up front and center for the Civil Rights Movement (1954-1968) and the Second Wave Feminist Movement (1960s-1980s), but participated in the protest which led to a shift in not only societal norms, but politics as well. It was the younger generation at this time that created hype surrounding the Civil Rights Movement with protests such as sit-ins, beginning in 1958 by the NCAAP Youth Council. They were also responsible for “freedom rides” where

creating more jobs. The pharmaceutical field will also continue to grow as there will also be a need for medicines for ailments associated with older life such as Alzheimer’s disease, other forms of dementia, heart issues and hearing and vision problems. This in turn will increase the need for medical research, not just with these disorders, but in others as well. As the boomers continue to pour money into the health care industry, more research can be conducted and further advancements can be possible.

passengers would travel on interstate buses into the segregated south to test the Supreme Court ruling which stated segregation was unconstitutional on interstate travel. The Second Wave Feminist Movement called attention to women’s issues regarding family, the workplace, and reproductive rights. The baby boomers encouraged the passing of legislation, including the Equal Pay Act in 1963, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which barred employment discrimination against race and sex, and Title X of the Public Health Service Act which created the American Federal Program devoted to family planning nationwide.

Health CareAs the number of senior citizens increase, the health care industry will continue to expand. There will be a demand for nurses and physicians in several different fields including hospitals, doctors offices and nursing homes as well,

50 LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | JANUARY 2015

Page 53: Lavish Living Magazine January 2015

MusicThe Baby boomer generation also had an impact on the music industry, as they created and fed into the hype of a new genre of music: rock and roll. According to Michael Bertrand, associate professor of History at Tennessee State University and author of Race, Rock and Elvis, this new type of music encouraged racial cooperation and a shared experience. Scholars and historians also contend that early rock and roll was instrumental in creating an identity among white and black teenagers. This identification also separated youth from the older generations by forming the first age-specific music genre. Rock and roll was not limited to just music, but it sparked a culture, extending to films, clothes, hair and creating a distinctive language. One of the largest social impacts on rock and roll was the Vietnam War, which created the psychedelic movement, which encouraged unity, heightened political awareness, and questioned authority.

EconomicsThe boomers are some of the highest earning individuals in United States history, and contribute to about 77 percent of the wealth accumulated in the nation. According to a 2012 report from the Federal Agency Forum, the number of senior citizens living in poverty has declined from 15 percent to nine percent since the mid-1970s. Also, baby boomers outspend other generations by an estimated $400 billion each year on consumer goods and services, according to the US Government Consumer Expenditure Survey. This generation contributes to the economy in other ways as well. As they begin to retire, they will spend more money on travel, moving to warmer climates, and managing their IRAs through financial institutions. This in turn will create a demand for jobs in the air travel industry, hospitality, real estate and financial planning.

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | JANUARY 2015 55

Two months ago we wrote about our vacation in Norway; a trip that gave us an opportunity to spend three days in Copenhagen before heading off, and prior to heading home we spent another four days in the ultra charming capital of Denmark. Located on the island of Zealand’s east coast, the country’s largest city has a very walk-able central downtown and has maintained a historic yet modernized vibe. Old cobbled streets, magnificent palaces, enchanting architecture, first rate restaurants, historic hotels and stunning museums provide an evocative backdrop to a thriving cultural scene that captivated us in many ways. Copenhagen has very ambitious environmental goals, like pulling cars off the downtown streets and moving more public transit underground. Unlike hilly Oslo and Norway, Copenhagen and Denmark are basically flat so it’s very conducive to bicycling everywhere and we haven’t seen as many cyclists since our Beijing, China visit. It’s been proclaimed by some as the design capital of

Europe, one of the world’s most livable and best-designed cities, fashion capital of Scandinavia, and the Continent’s preeminent fun city to visit. We can understand each of those proclamations! And like Norway everyone seems to speak English and as Americans we felt very welcome.

Where to Stay:Our first visit found us staying at the Phoenix Hotel, a delightful boutique property located near the waterfront and the entertaining Nyhavn Canal area. On our return from Norway we opted to stay at the centrally located historic King Frederick, Copenhagen’s oldest hotel. A plaque near the front desk listing all the famous notables and celebrities who have lodged there was quite impressive. Both hotels provided excellent buffet breakfasts, complimentary wi-fi and exceptionally friendly staff. www.phoenixcopenhagen.dk; www.firsthotels.com/KongFrederik. Copenhagen has many lodging possibilities that should fit most any budget and desired locale.

What to Do and See:Upon arriving in Copenhagen we recommend doing two things to get an important first impression of this very notable cosmopolitan city: First take a hop-on-hop-off sightseeing tour on the canals or by bus around town and you’ll definitely achieve an invaluable overview; Next head over to the historic 1642’s Round Tower (Europe’s oldest functioning observatory) and climb the gentle ramps to the top deck for expansive city views. Whether you do one of the hop-on-hop-off tours or just walk-the-city try to include the following: Visit the dazzling Tivoli Gardens, one of the world’s most famous amusement parks opening in 1843 and reportedly Walt Disney’s inspiration for his future developments. Since our last visit years ago many of the gardens have been replaced by amusement venues and high-end restaurants; Browse the lively Nyhavn area and dine at one of many canal-side eateries and try one of Denmark’s famous beers; Stroll down the winding expansive

Stroget Street, Europe’s largest pedestrian-only shopping area, with many stores featuring remarkable Danish designs and fashions, a wonderful variety of dining choices and entertainment venues; Walk the entire grounds of the picturesque Kastellet park and be sure to stop by and view the nearby Little Mermaid bronze statue. This popular symbol of Copenhagen is based on the famous Dane writer Hans Christian Anderson’s 1836 fairytale; Visit the Amalienborg Palace (built in the1750’s), home to Denmark’s reigning King and Queen, to view the onsite Royal Museum and changing of the Danish Royal Guard each day at noon; Make a special effort to tour the renaissance Rosenborg Castle Museum (built in1606) housing the priceless monarchy’s crown jewels and royal crowns safely guarded and displayed in the dungeon-like basement; Be sure to include Christiansborg Palace (originally built in 1167), seat of Denmark’s Parliament, Supreme Court, the Prime Minister’s office and the city’s tallest tower for more panoramic views of the city. a bygone era’s elegant works of art, meeting rooms and a spectacular Great Hall still used for state receptions and banquets. Don’t miss the Hall’s eleven exquisite tapestries illustrating Denmark’s history and the royal stables (added in 1745) housing the royal family’s extraordinary matching white horses and gold carriage collection; In the Christianshavn area be sure to see the striking interior of the Church of our Saviour and

then climb the church’s inside tower plus the spire. To complete the 400 step climb you need to go outside and, if brave enough, do the harrowing climb on the narrow, winding, often windy, circular stairway to the top of the steeple for incredible vistas. Whew! After leaving the church, if you are not put off by rather outrageous and shocking lifestyles, you might want to visit the infamous debauchery of the nearby Christiania’s Green Light district. We think Green Light must refer to “anything goes” but definitely not for children.

TIP: Consider buying the Copenhagen Card, available for purchase through the Visit Copenhagen tourism office and gives you admission to most attractions and unlimited use of local buses, metro and trains throughout Copenhagen and the island. A tremendous value!

Where to Dine: We’ve already mentioned the Nyhavn and Stroget areas for a nice variety of most ethnic dining possibilities. Wanting a genuine sampling of the famous Danish smorgasbord lunch of meat and cheese open-faced sandwiches, Dane-style meatballs, beers and aquavit? If so, we recommend Kronborg Restaurant in the Stroget neighborhood where the food and friendly service is impressive. www.restaurantkronborg.dk/en. If you want to experience one of Copenhagen’s most popular and upscale dining spots make a reservation at Nimb Brasserie in Tivoli where we experienced a three-course dinner worthy of their award winning accolades. Another superb dining experience was the rather new Michelin recommended Marv and Ben restaurant, run by a very creative young chef and an energy-driven manager. If these two principles can remain onboard it has the potential of even greater Michelin award recognition. www.marvogben.dk

Day Trips Outsideof Copenhagen:First and foremost the most exceptional daytrip in our eyes was taking the train a short fifty-six kilometers north to Helsingor (AKA Elsinore from Hamlet), one of the quaintest towns in all of Europe and home to the famous Kronborg Castle, reportedly the inspirational setting for Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Just walking the charming streets of Helsingor, touring this huge intriguing castle and viewing the shores of Sweden across the water will enhance any Denmark trip. Are you interested in crossing another country off your bucket list? If so, you might want to take a ferry from Helsingor over to Helsingborg, Sweden or cross the Oresund Bridge connecting Copenhagen to Malmo, Sweden. Other out-of-town, close-by day trips easily accessible by train include: Roskilde, to see the Viking Ship Museum and to Hillerod to visit the historic Fredricksborg Castle and National Historical Museum. And remember the Copenhagen Card will provide free and scenic train rides to all these destinations plus admission at the sites. Farmhaus Granite Bay BY EMILY GUERRERO | PHOTOS DAN HOOD

Tucked away between Douglas and Auburn-Folsom Boulevard is Granite Bay’s newest culinary gem, the Farmhaus. Recently opened, this nouveau chic eatery strives to create a relaxing upscale ambiance with memorable dishes that continue to stun from the hors d’oeuvres to the last bite of bread pudding.

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | JANUARY 2015 61

Page 64: Lavish Living Magazine January 2015

With an emphasis on fresh, wholesome ingredients and a balcony that’s to die for, this boutique style, farm-to-table restaurant offers all the makings of a romantic evening out with fabulous menu options and an extensive wine bar. The Farmhaus and their chef Michael have built the restaurant’s reputation around a rotating menu that celebrates fresh and seasonal food. With an emphasis on locally grown ingredients, everything from the pork tenderloin and personal pizzas to the house salad vinaigrette is both satisfying and nourishing. A personal favorite on the menu is the artichoke crostini that leaves everyone begging for a second helping. Simply put, the Farmhaus stays true to its name in every culinary venture placing quality above all else. Not to mention generous portions and great customer service. Another perk of this fantastic farm-to-table gem is the extensive wine bar with unbeatable pricing. The owners have taken great care to create a well-rounded wine list with a variety of selections for every palette. The staff is well-educated and able to provide excellent advice on pairings for any dish and any wine. Similarly, they carry several great beers on tap just in case you’re in the mood for a good brew.

S I P & S AV O R FARMHAUS

Food and drink aside, the ambiance alone is enough to make even the cold-hearted fall deeply in love with the Farmhaus instantly. Indoors, the dining area is set between an spacious wine bar and an open kitchen where diners can see the chefs in action. While small, it allows for plenty of privacy and is spacious enough for both large parties and small intimate date nights. With steel detail on the wall spelling out Farmhaus to the warm tones, this restaurant gets an "A" in achieving a carelessly calm yet chic environment. Outdoors, the large balcony is decorated with stringed lights and spacious tables where you can dine under

the stars. Every piece of the balcony be it the waterfall or the pizza oven turned garden, exudes leisure which we think is the best way to unwind. For an evening of comfortable dining, beautiful scenery, wine and fresh healthy food take a trip to the Farmhaus. Before you know it, you’ll be raving about it too!

SOBON Estate

BY EMILY GUERRERO

Sobon Estates is easily the most family -oriented and beautiful vineyard in the Shenadoah Valley. Since being acquired by the Sobon family in 1987 it has been known for its stunning scenery and one of a kind Zins. The estate lies on nearly 90 acres at the top of Steiner road among the vineyards of Amador County. As a historical landmark, the Sobon estate pays tribute to it’s heritage with an onsite museum among its own private valley. The Sobon Estate specialty is without question Zinfandels, especially their Reserve Zin. Because their estate and a few local stores are the only places to purchase their nationally acclaimed reserve, you can expect to see all sorts of tourists and wine connoisseurs making their way there. When the

family acquired the vineyard, they retained the older Zinfandels vines and replaced the rest with California’s best varietals and clones. However, the Zins don’t get all the buzz. Another well-known and loved varietal is the Sobon Estate Syrah. The best part of their creations is that their one of a kind taste is pretty affordable on any budget without sacrificing flavor. The Sobon Estate takes family business seriously and is constantly shaping the wine experience around a family oriented experience. The biggest attraction, next to the wines, is the property of the estate itself. With a rich history and generous expanses of land, the estate preserves a sense of nostalgia and timeless beauty. On its grounds you will find gorgeous

vines, small ponds and lakes, and a hill covered horizon. As if there weren’t enough reasons to love it, the entire property is also eco-friendly and sustainably farmed including their own electric car power station for their guests convenience. Paul Sobon, owner and winemaker, explained that the Sobon estate uses great farming as a basis for a beautiful landscape and truly delicious wines. Nearly 95% of the grapes are grown on site giving your eyes and taste buds an experience all its own. Everything that is not grown in-house is purchased from local vineyards. What makes them different from other vineyards in the areas? Undoubtedly, their 40 years of “trying it out” allows for a sophisticated wine making process and award winning flavor. They’ve got their vineyard down to an art. In fact, they thoroughly understand the joys of new blends that honor traditional wine flavor with a modern twist. They are currently the only vineyard in the Foothills to sell and make Tannat, which is a really deep, rich, red wine. They aren’t about fancy changes or making things complicated, the Sobon family is interested in producing excellent wines before all else. Their full-time family operation is supported by their own hard work and drive to be competitive in the market and provide all their guests with an memorable wine tasting experience. Take a day trip to Sobon Estate and soak up this gem of a family winery. With incredible history and sights, you can fall in love with their contemporary take on classic wines. The tasting room is open every single day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. It will be worth every second and don’t forget to try the award-winning Old Vine Zins!

WASABI ASIA BISTRO & SUSHI BAR

BY EMILY GUERRERO

Wasabi Asia Bistro and Sushi Bar house has been voted time and time again the best sushi in all of the Sacramento area since its opening in 1999. And it’s no wonder it’s so renowned with Peter Tham, one of California’s best known sushi chefs, running the show. His years of experience through all of California is the driving force behind their wild success and unique rolls. Their menu boasts over 100 delicious rolls and specialty dishes that constantly exceed expectations. Every roll is made with the freshest ingredients and high quality seafood to ensure the best taste for all. In fact, their menu has so many options it’s hard for anyone to leave dissatisfied. If sushi isn’t your preferred Japanese flavor, they have a whole section dedicated to unique tempura blends, teppanyaki, fusion plates, and soups. That’s right, they have ramen. The restaurant has a killer happy hour 4:30-6:30pm daily, so be sure to swing by and unwind after work. Visit one of their three locations for a taste of the best Japanese food around. They are currently located in Roseville, Folsom, and Citrus Heights.

When you’re wandering the aisles of the supermarket wondering how to spruce up a meal, take a stop at the produce section and round yourself up some Brussels sprouts. These awesome little green vegetables just might be what you’re missing vital nutrients and interesting flavor. Unfortunately for this little veggie, it’s got a bad reputation floating around. Remember being a kid and dreading your “no thank you helping?” Well, this is the time to redeem this delicious vegetable with excellent recipes that we promise will yield third and fourth portions. Whether it’s a desire for extra iron or something to mix into your routine, let’s bring back Brussels sprouts from their notoriously bad rep. When prepared correctly, they have a deliciously fresh and slightly sweet fla-

vor, if you remember them being bitter, you’re doing it wrong! Why is everyone raving about this little superfood? Well, Brussels sprouts, among many of their restorative powers, actually protect you from DNA defects. Just a cup every few days can give your body vital compounds that work as enzymes in healing genetically-caused health issues. Similarly, they contain photo-nutrients that stabilize blood sugar and insulin levels. Also, you can count on them to deliver high amounts of soluble fiber right into any stomach issue. Not sure you believe me? The following recipes will not only prove everyone loves Brussels sprouts but also give your body that extra nourishing oomph.

E T I Q U E T T E FINAL THOUGHT GYM ETIQUETTE

PROPER Gym ETIQUETTE

BY EMILY GUERRERO

It’s the time of year for resolutions and promises of going to the gym, so it’s only fitting you get the inside scoop on how to fly under the radar during your workout. We know no one wants an audience mid calf-raise. But before you dawn your new running shoes and yoga pants, remember that exercising in a gym requires an understanding of community. Just because you don’t need to bum a spot off the body builder by the weights or chat with the person adjacent to you on the treadmill, doesn’t mean you should just act as if they’re not there.

GYM RULE #1: ALWAYS RE-WRACKThis is gym etiquette 101. If you’re using free weights in any section other than in front of the free weights rack, you better not abandon them there. There are a limited supply of 12lb weights and leaving them anywhere but their designated spot makes you thinspo enemy number one.

GYM RULE #2- DON’T BE A HOGNo, this is not a reference to the heavy breathing and

piles of sweat surrounding your machine. Basically, use one machine at a time. How does one take up more than one machine with only one body, you ask? I know you bring your water bottle, iPad, and the latest copy of Lavish with you for cardio. Use them for entertainment, not as a placeholder for your leg machine circuit.

GYM RULE #2-SWEAT THE SMALL STUFFThis is in reference to the piles of sweat surrounding your machine. Sure, you can’t control it. It just means you’re killing it in your workout. You go girl! However, if you’re a sweaty Betty bring a towel and wipe down the stairmaster. No one wants to slip off a machine from your puddles.

GYM RULE #3-GET OFF YOUR PHONEThis one will save you from all kinds of nasty stares. Many gyms have strict rules about cell phone usage in certain areas. While free time is scarce, using your gym time to multi-task with catching up with your mother via cellphone isn’t going to cut it. Unless, your mom is on the elliptical next to you. Resist the urge to pick up the phone or step outside.

GYM RULE # 4-READ THE INSTRUCTIONSThe instructions are there to ensure you don’t pull a muscle and to prevent liability for your gym. When you haven’t used a machine before, there is no shame in asking a gym employee or sitting down to read the instructions (they are usually stuck to the side of a machine). If you’re feeling shy, slyly watch someone else use from a distance, we won’t tell. Put simply, don’t just sit down and start working out you just might end up hurt and embarrassed. Talk about not wanting an audience.

BONUS TIP- TAKE A PHOTOThis tip is just for you and I recommend doing it in the privacy of the locker room or at home. A before photo in little clothing has been shown to provide much needed motivation to turn your new years resolutions into actions. Use it for reference frequently!

The bottom line is to consider everyone around and stay out of the limelight. Gym etiquette is comprised of seemingly simple tasks that make your exercise better for you and everyone else. Think before you train and the rest will follow naturally.
