Celebratingthe Holidays...

The holidays are almost here, folks! Where has the time gone?! I hope you have most of your holiday shopping done, and if you decided to participate in the Black Friday festivities, I hope you emerged unscathed. I partook in the

American holiday shopping tradition, browsing some local shops and scoring some awesome deals! This year, I will be celebrating Christmas with my husband and his family at his grandmother’s house. My favorite thing about this holiday is getting the family together and spending time with one another. With busy schedules, this can be a difficult thing to do sometimes. For New Year’s, I made the executive decision that we are going out this year! Hosting the annual 'Ring in the New Year Party' has been great, but time for something new! Whether your plans keep you indoors or out on the town this New Years, getting dolled up is a must! Cheers to Summer!

There are so many things to love about this time of year. The hot weather, late days, cool drinks, fun in the sun, backyard barbeques and good times with friends and family are what come to mind most. With the kids out of

school, there is no better time to pack up and take advantage of all the fun things to do around our community. We are surrounded with gorgeous scenery from the rolling golden hills to beautiful Folsom Lake; the outdoors are our playground, go enjoy it! Our Charity Spotlight this month declares July as National Parks and Recreation month, so pack up that picnic basket, the kids, and enjoy a picturesque day outside! This issue of Lavish, we tried to encompass all things summer. With temperatures soaring into the triple digits, we took our search indoors to find the ultimate summer cocktail! We were fortunate enough to be introduced to six awesome bartenders who wowed us with their creations. Besides taste testing through these pieces of art (tough job, we know...) we got to meet some incredible people who express their passion in every glass. I strongly encourage you to pay them a visit, you will not be disappointed! Appearing on our cover this month is our Sweet Summer Days fashion spread. Although the shoot fell on the hottest day of the year to date, we had a blast with the help from Larry Barrett at Lucky's Land and Sea. Larry provided the gorgeous boat we shot and also coordinated a friend to drive us around the lake to take some incredible water shots. Everything you see in these photos are for sale, including the boat! I could not be more thankful of Larry and the Lavish team for sticking it out that day! It was a scorcher! In line with the heat this month, we have selected out Getaway to the amazing Phoenix, AZ. Just a short plane ride away, this oasis amidst the desert is an incredible option for relaxation and adventurers alike. Also spotlighted this month is Back Wine Bar & Bistro in Folsom. CAPTURING Heroes at Work

Wildfire photographer and thrill seeker, Matthew Henderson, loves the rush he gets when his shutter speed and aperture capture the perfect moment, knowing he’s not just taking pictures, but telling a story. “It’s important to me to show the general population what firefighters do and the dangers involved,” he said. The Woodland native began his thrill-seeking days in the military where he served in the Navy for four years.

“I was an air force cadet in middle school and high school, and it was something I always knew I wanted to do,” he said. “It made me proud to serve my country.” After leaving the military, Henderson went to work for Toyota in their technical center for research and design in Michigan. Being in the Midwest, he was exposed to a lot of thunderstorms and he decided he wanted to capture the beauty of nature. His love of photography grew, and soon this self-proclaimed adrenaline junkie was storm chasing and shooting wildfires. He moved back to California where he continued his photography skills. “I have been to almost every state and have traveled all over, and there is truly no place like California,” he said. Henderson has photographed 40 wildfires in the last seven years, covering seven this year alone. Shooting wildfires hits home for Henderson as his father is a retired fire chief. He remembers his father leaving in the morning and returning in the evening smelling like smoke, and always wondered what his father’s experience was like. Now, he feels like he can do that for other children. He receives messages on Facebook from firefighters, thanking him for capturing their photos that they send to their children to provide them updates on their whereabouts. Henderson’s latest fire was the King Fire in El Dorado County. “What made the King Fire so significant was that it was so close to heavily populated areas,” he said. “You could see the huge cloud right off the side of the mountain.”

The King Fire burned over 97,000 acres, destroying 12 single residences and 68 other minor structures. A total of 1,734 personnel worked on the fire and included 66 different fire engines. Henderson was there for two full days to photograph the fire. When he arrived on the scene, he spoke with volunteers at the Georgetown Fire Department who directed him to look out spots and other locations to get the best pictures. “It was one of the most beautiful fires I was able to photograph because of the wind direction, with the stars above it and the reflection of the lake,” he said. “That can be probably be taken the wrong way, but from a photographer’s standpoint, there’s something beautiful about the destructive disposition of nature.” One of the most

interesting fires Henderson ever covered was the Chips Fire in August 2012. There, he met a National Forestry Ranger who showed him where to get the best photos. The fire was deep in the valley and the men stood close to the edge of the basin. Then, the fire swept up the side where they were standing, only about 30 yards from them. It was the closest he has ever been to a wildfire. Because of the dangers, Henderson makes sure to always carry his full personal protective equipment. “Safety is always a priority,” explained the father of three. “But I also want the firefighters to be able to focus on their job, rather than on me.” It is obvious that Henderson’s passion for storytelling, photography and firefighting has provided him with a gratifying career. “I love being with people out there and showing the world what they’re doing,” he explained.

Kenny Gordon and his wife JoAnn, both Sacramento natives, opened Kenny G and Company in Citrus Heights in November 1997 and the company has been growing ever since, opening three other locations including Elk Grove, Roseville and Reno. The fine jewelry business is very much family-oriented for the Gordons as Kenny and JoAnn run the business with their youngest son. Their eldest son fell in love with automobiles and following his aspirations, he became a shop foreman. Kenny’s extensive knowledge and experience in the fine jewelry business began several years ago. He started at a young age when he had various small jobs and upon landing a job at a small jewelry store, he learned the trade and fell in love. He went on to work at a family-owned jewelry store for 17 years. When a client asked Gordon about running a jewelry business, he began to contemplate the idea and decided to open his own. “It was about getting an opportunity and seizing the moment,” he said. “I wouldn’t criticize the company that I worked for, we just decided to go in a different direction.” The store’s success is not only measured by its growing business, but by client and their community’s satisfaction. Every location has won an award for “Best Jeweler” whether it be from the Chamber of Commerce or local magazine voting. “Year in and year out the stores have consistently won several awards throughout the years,” said Gordon. For Gordon, the best part of owning the jewelry store has been sharing special moments with his clients. “It’s been incredible, the relationships we’ve built with people and sharing their special moments with them,” he said. “The most special aspect is when a client can look down at a piece of jewelry and remember specifically the event in which they received that gem.” Although this time of year sees a great deal of business (November and December have the largest window for engagements), business stays pretty constant for the Gordons. “There’s always birthdays, anniversaries, graduations and weddings, so we’ve been blessed to have a steady business,” he said. You will find Kenny primarily at the Citrus Heights location, since it is the flagship store of the company as well as local to his neighborhood. According to Gordon, the best way to describe his jewelry is to compare it to fine wine. “Every year it becomes more special,” he said.On top of providing clients with fine jewelry, Kenny G and Company also offer a variety of services including jewelry repair and cleaning, watch repair, professional appraisals and custom jewelry design.

In today's real estate industry there are so many moving parts to our transaction. As a real estate agent, we are often asked by clients for a referral to other professionals, often for financial or estate planning. Retirement planning plays so much into today’s buyers decision to buy or sell, I thought it would be helpful to call upon Dawn Silva, a local Ed Jones Financial Advisor to offer some sound advise that all buyers and sellers can use to transition into retirement.

PROTECT YOUR RETIREMENT AGAINST MARKET VOLATILITY As an investor, you’re well aware that, over the short term, the financial markets always move up and down. During your working years, you may feel that you have time to overcome this volatility. And you’d be basing these feelings on actual evidence: the longer the investment period, the greater the tendency of the markets to “smooth out” their performance. But what happens when you retire? Won’t you be more susceptible to market movements?

You may not be as vulnerable as you might think. In the first place, given our growing awareness of healthier lifestyles, you could easily spend two, or even three, decades in retirement — so your investment time frame isn’t necessarily going to be that compressed. Nonetheless, it’s still true that time may well be a more important consideration to you during your retirement years, so you may want to be particularly vigilant about taking steps to help smooth out the effects of market volatility. Toward that end, here are a few suggestions:

• Allocate your investments among a variety of asset classes. Of course, proper asset allocation is a good investment move at any age, but when you’re retired, you want to be especially careful that you don’t “over-concentrate” your investment dollars among just a few assets. Spreading your money among a range of vehicles — stocks, bonds, certificates of deposit, government securities and so on —can help you avoid taking the full brunt of a downturn that may primarily hit just one type of investment. (Keep in mind, though, that while diversification can help reduce the effects of volatility, it can’t assure a profit or protect against loss.)

• Don’t make emotional decisions. At various times during your retirement, you will, in all likelihood, witness some sharp drops in the market. Try to avoid overreacting to these downturns, which will probably just be normal market “corrections.” If you can keep your emotions out of investing, you will be less likely to make moves such as selling quality investments merely because their price is temporarily down.

• Don’t try to “time” the market. You may be tempted to “take advantage” of volatility by looking for opportunities to “buy low and sell high.” In theory, this is a fine idea — but, unfortunately, no one can really predict market highs or lows. You’ll probably be better off by consistently investing the same amount of money into the same investments. Over time, this method of investing may result in lower per-share costs. However, as is the case with diversification, this type of “systematic” investing won’t guarantee a profit or protect against loss, and you’ll need to be willing to keep investing when share prices are declining. It’s probably natural to get somewhat more apprehensive about market volatility during your retirement years. But taking the steps described above can help you navigate the sometimes-choppy waters of the financial world.

U.S. MARINE Corps RESERVE TOYS FOR TOTS

It’s the time of giving, and who more deserving than a child in need? When most children wake up on Christmas morning, they have presents under the Christmas tree, but some children aren’t so lucky. Thankfully, there is an organi-zation dedicated to not only providing gifts to disadvantaged youth, but uniting members of local communities to work together for a common purpose. The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots collects new, unwrapped toys for underprivi-leged children, and distributes them around the holidays. The gift-collecting ef-fort begins in October and continues through December, and this year the toys will be delivered on Saturday and Sunday, December 20 and 21. In 2013, Toys for Tots collected 21,103 toys that were distributed to 7,251 children in El Dorado County, and this year they are hoping for more.“We have a need and every year the community comes through,” said Sue Hen-derson, local coordinating officer. El Dorado County Toys for Tots has partnered with 15 local sponsors to make this possible, some including South Lake Tahoe Family Resource Center, El Dorado County Health Center and the Placerville Police Department Christmas Party for Kids. This year marks the 35th year for the

Marine Corps League “Hangtown” Detachment 697 Toys for Tots cam-paign.Toys for Tots began as a charitable campaign in 1947. The inspiration for the efforts came from Major Bill Hendricks, USMCR, and his wife, Diane when she wanted to donate a homemade Raggedy Ann doll, but could not find an organization to donate it to. With the help of his other local marine reservists, Hen-dricks and Lieutenant Colonel John Hampton collected around 5,000 toys that year. Becoming an over-night success, Toys for Tots launched a national campaign in 1948.In 1991, Secretary of Defense, Dick Cheney, approved the formation and affiliation of the nonprofit and in 1995, Secretary of Defense, Wil-liam Perry, approved Toys for Tots as an official mission of the Marine Corps Reserve. As of 2013, the pro-gram and foundation have collected and distributed over 469 million toys to 216 million children in need

nationwide. The organization has won several awards including 2003 Outstanding Nonprofit Organiza-tion of the Year, Reader’s Digest Best Children’s Charity of 2003, and is one of the top 10 charities of 2003 on the Forbes’ “Gold Star List.” If you feel like donating, here are some things to keep in mind: Most campaign sites assist up to age 12, but many local communities have extended to include ages 14-16. There is always a need for items such as: sporting equipment/balls, books, backpacks, cosmetics, purses, board games, skateboards/helmets, hand-held electronics, curling irons and straightening irons. Toys for Tots does NOT accept realistic-looking weapons or gifts with food.

Every time a guest sits down in a restaurant they are, more likely than not, presented with an extra little booklet that contains the restaurant’s wine list and beverage selections. Usually they efficiently and absent mindedly flip the cover open, look for what they know and select the ol’ goto favorites a selection they are familiar with in the price range they are comfortable spending. Unfortunately this is like watching ONLY the season finale of Game of Thrones. By doing this you essentially get where you’re going but miss out on the brilliant surprises that you might otherwise find. Here are a few tips and tricks to wander safely into the daunting wilderness of the unknown wine list.

• Find a good deal. Lots of restaurants have a great deal on wines during different days of the week, whether it’s 50% off bottles or

$7 wines by the glass there are often random days where you can find a great deal to double your budget and allow you to try something new. Pick something you’ve never had before. We all know there’s nothing like a sale to inspire adventure.

• Ask to speak with the person most familiar with the wine list. This could be a lead server, a beverage manager, an owner or a bartender. They will be happy to be your guide.

• Be honest. Tell them what you normally drink and how much you would like to spend. Restaurants are good at operating within the boundaries set by guests. Being cryptic about your choice of varietal or your budget will only cripple the recommendation making power of those who are trying to help.

• Ask about “Value”. There are often a few bottles that are so good, so well made and so little known that their value outweighs the price of the bottle. Anyone can sell $100+ dollar bottle and call it good, but it takes talent to squeeze quality and value into the meatiest part of the list. $40, $70 will find you a good bottle at a good value.

• Be open minded and willing to try new things… Break away from the shackles of chardonnay or cabernet. Venture forth and have fun with all of this art in a bottle. Next month we’ll discuss how to explore hospitality and get the most out of your dining experience and increase the value of your dining dollar exponentially.

at the beautiful Lodge at Tahoe Donner perched high up the hill behind town overlooking one of the area’s finest Sierra golf courses open to the public. If warm enough, be sure to opt for dining on their new outdoor deck. This Tahoe Donner community is an ultra-deluxe development and should be a perfect location for a future high-end lodging property. It also offers horseback trail rides in the summer and novice and intermediate levels of downhill skiing and snowboarding plus a recently enhanced cross country skiing area during winter seasons. www.tahoedonner.com. We discovered Burger Me a few years back and would return often if this burger joint was a few hundred miles closer. WHAT TO SEE and DO: First and foremost you need to spend time at Northstar, one of the country’s most highly praised family winter and summer season resort complexes. A world class skiing and snowboarding school, a wide range of well groomed runs suitable for all skill levels and an ice skating rink highlight the winters. Summer season features world class mountain bike trails, roller skating, a


T R AV E Lbungee jump trampoline, hiking trails, a ropes course, gondola trips and a championship golf course. If staying at the Ritz you can grab the complimentary intermountain gondola and head down to the Village at Northstar during high seasons for lots of shopping, dining and entertainment options or just enjoy gathering around the numerous Village fire-pits. A great choice for lunch is Rubicon where the tasty pizzas and friendly staff are welcome plusses. We’ve always associated Truckee with the infamous Donner Party ordeal where a group of eighty-seven settlers from Illinois in 1846 headed to Sacramento’s Sutters Fort. After becoming snowbound, mostly as a result of poor decision making, only forty-eight miraculously survived. Donner Memorial State Park-also a National Historic Landmark –is dedicated to those survivors and is located right next to Truckee and the nearby Donner Lake. This 3,243 acre park, started in 1928, features 2.5 miles of hiking trails, 3 miles of Donner Lake frontage, the Emigrant Trail Museum and the awesome Pioneer Monument. One of our biggest surprises was dropping in to the Truckee River Winery home to shockingly good Pinot Noirs and two popular bocce ball courts. www.truckeeriverwinery.com. The Firehouse

Noted not just for its rich history, but also its culinary excellence, The Firehouse has become a notorious icon in the Sacramento community.

Nestled in Historic Old Sacramento, the restaurant was once the location of California’s first fire house, established in 1872, it was the home of Engine Company No. 3. Needing a larger facility, the fire house was abandoned in 1921. BY KELSEY WEHSELS | PHOTOS DAN HOOD


Seeing a succession of owners, the building landed a permanent landlord when Newton Cope purchased the property in 1959. At that time, there was a lot of unrest about the area, which had become a deteriorated slum, so there were plans to have the I-5 built along the river. After lobbying by many concerned citizens, the State Department of Transportation pushed the freeway 1 1/2 blocks east to create the National Historic District of Old Sacramento. Cope undertook a major project, giving the building a facelift and creating a small bar and restaurant. It was the first building to do so in the historic district. In 1960, The Firehouse opened for business and became an instant success. Many celebrities and politicians have dined at the restaurant including Michael Jordan, James Bronson, Muhammad Ali, Andy Warhol and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Ronald Reagan even hosted his two inaugural dinners as California governor at The Firehouse. Changing with the seasons, the menu is updated four times a year to coordinate with the time of year, always including gluten-free and vegetarian options. The menu selection is a collaborative effort with the Executive Chef, Deneb Williams, and the management team. Williams’ inspiration comes from the season, and he always starts with a list of vegetables from local farms. Currently in rotation is the fall and holiday menu stacked high with savory quality, featuring dishes such as pork belly, sea scallops, fall chicken salad and topped off with pumpkin crème caramel and buttermilk velvet cake. The chef’s favorite? “It’s too tough to choose... I love them all,” said Williams. The restaurant also boasts an impressive wine menu with over 2,100 different labels and a wine cellar housing

The restaurant has also been a local favorite for weddings where guests can choose a variety of venue options from inside or outside, or a combination of the two, holding a capacity of 75 to 275 guests.

Berghold Estate Winery

The Berghold Estate Winery has become a fixture in the Lodi Appellation, not just for their wines, but their unique architecture and 1800s-style decor. Becoming winery owners in 1986, the Berghold family was previously in the antique business in historic Pennsylvania. The family’s occupation was somewhat fateful as the name “Berghold” can be traced back to the 1600s in Austria and can be translated to “vineyard worker.” The old building, the location for their winery, was transformed into a Pennsylvania Dutch style barn, and is known as “the elegant barn.” “When we were first designing our place, we wanted our customers to enjoy American California wines in a historical American environment with top notch rich American art and furnishings,” said owner, Julia Berghold. Some of these antiques and artifacts the

Berghold family possess are currently on display at the winery, from a 1918 Charles Stieff concert grand piano to an 1890 grand chandelier from the Paramount Theater in New York. One such item the winery recently acquired is the carved and gilded mantelpiece, also known as the Moore Mantelpiece, displayed on the wall by the entrance. It was designed by the celebrated Frank Furness and fabricated by renowned cabinetmaker, Daniel Pabst. The mantelpiece was designed for Bloomfield and Clara Moore, displayed in their Philadelphia home in 1872. The piece was considered one of the most notorious designs of the American decorative arts from the Aesthetic Movement. It is one of the last known works by Furness and Pabst, the others of their collection being displayed at prominent establishments such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the

Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the High Museum of Art. When the Moore home was demolished in 1958, the mantelpiece went missing for over half a century, until it was recently found. The Bergholds obtained the piece through a stroke of good fortune. When Joe Berghold’s art dealer owed him money, he offered up the mantelpiece instead, not realizing its significance. Upon its discovery, the artifact was restored by conservators, artisans and consultants, including Pabsts’ great-grandson. This piece of art will not be a permanent fixture at the winery as it will be going on tour to various fine arts museums around the country in a few years.

PEPPERMINTFroth COCKTAILINGREDIENTS 1 1/2 parts Vodka • 1 part peppermint schnapps1/2 part simple syrup • 1/2 part creamCandy cane or peppermint patty for garnish

DIRECTIONSMix all ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously until the outside of the shaker is frosted and beaded with sweat. Strain into rocks glass filled with crushed ice. Garnish with candy cane or peppermint patty.

HOMEMADE PEPPERMINT PattiesMAKES 28 PATTIES3/4 cup sweetened condensed milk1 1/2 teaspoons peppermint extract4 cups confectioners’ sugar3 cups semisweet chocolate chips2 teaspoons shortening

DIRECTIONSIn a large mixing bowl, combine condensed milk and pep-permint extract. Beat in enough confectioners’ sugar, a little at a time, to form a stiff dough that is no longer sticky. Form into 1 inch balls, then place on waxed paper and flatten with fingers to form patties. Let patties dry at room temperature two hours, turning once. In a medium saucepan over low heat, melt chocolate with shortening, stirring often. Remove from heat. Dip patties, one at a time, into chocolate by lay-ing them on the tines of a fork and lowering the fork into the liquid. Let cool on waxed paper until set.

New Years Eve, in our opinion, is one of the most romantic holidays of the year. From the glitter and champagne to kisses at midnight, ringing in the New Year symbolizes glamorous new beginnings and a chance to have the night of your life. So when you’re speculating your options between watching the ball drop in yoga pants to dawning the perfect black dress, be sure you choose the decision that starts your resolutions out right.

CATCHING THE KISSDeciding where to go for New Years likely depends on the most likely spot to retrieve that ever anticipated midnight kiss. If your significant other wants to curl up by the fire and ring in the New Year wrapped in blankets with cups of Egg Nog, stay in. If you’re like the rest of us searching for the perfect stranger or the next step with your crush, a party is a great way to reduce the pressure of the midnight frenching.

GLISTENING IN THE GLITTERPersonally, there is never enough glitter and when I think New Years Eve; I think sparklers, sequence, and that shiny ball dropping. When you stay at home, you just might miss out on that glamour that only comes around once a year. A wise person once said, “A Little Party Never Killed Nobody.”
