temperatures, clear skies, and green foothills. I am hopeful for just a bit more rain though, and as they say, April showers bring May flowers... Which

is perfect for our Fab Finds this issue introducing our Floral Frenzy spread. We are also very excited to share with you all, Lavish is once again a finalist for the Maggie Awards. Our team, clients and friends work so hard to promote and make each issue come togther, and we are so thankful and excited to share this acheivement with you all. Our team will be heading to Los Angeles at the end of the month for the awards ceremony, win or no win, to represent our community. We feel so blessed for this opportunity and wanted to also thank all our loyal readers for their support over the past couple years. April also represents our annual Home and Design issue, and what better time than right after your spring cleaning. Check out our Fun and Fresh design tips to spruce up your home to get ready for spring. Also in our Annual Home Edition, we highlighted a few local homes that have some incredible features, all designed by the interior design expert, Julie Smith. We were blessed to be able to do our spring photo shoot at the beautiful Viaggio Estate and Winery in Lodi. Many thanks to the owners, Terri and Larry for providing this incredible backdrop! BY KELSEY WEHSELS | PHOTOGRAPHY: KAMILO BUSTAMANTE, CLICKVISSION PHOTOGRAPHY “Your success is our success” is Nar Bustamante’s mission statement for Nar Fine Carpentry Inc., a design/build remodel company. As the owner and founder, Bustamante believes in improving and empowering people’s lives through the portal of design and creativity, where he uses his traveling experiences and background in building to create interesting and new designs. He began his career at age 14 when his contractor uncles gave him summer jobs to help them on projects.

“I realized by the time I was 18, I knew how to build a house,” he said. His father was an art collector and dealer, where he was exposed to worldly ideas, and at age 19, he got the travel bug. “Must have been dropped in my coffee,” he joked. With a passion for architecture, he set out to travel the world to see and pay attention to how the world builds and lives. He began in Norway, making his way across Europe, and North Africa, visiting places such as Turkey, Morrocco, and Egypt. After returning to the United States, Bustamante opened his own building company, creating and constructing homes from the ground up. “I realized that I did not like building homes, I liked redesigning

And there are always challenges, he affirms. “But, it’s about taking those challenges and turning them into joy and a vision.” The biggest one? “Making sure I have my latte first before the day starts pounding on me,” he said with a laugh. Although Nar Fine Carpentry, Inc. has seen its fair share of challenges, it is has also seen its fair share of awards as well, from national awards from the National Kitchen and Bath Association and the National Association of the Remodeling Industry to regional and local awards. And when you ask him what he does in his free time, he will tell you: “If I’m not working, then I’m working, cause I never work,” he joked. However, he enjoys spending time with his wife, Deborah, daughter Kailani,8, and son, Kamilo, 20, who is currently attending school in Southern California to become a professional photographer. He was even able to capture some photos of his dad. “I love having him take my picture,” said Bustamante. “He has an ability to see and direct that fun side of me. Bustamante is currently working on two complete home renovations for two local celebrities, and also working on a variety of kitchen designs. “I usually have about five kitchens going at any given time,” he said.

With that dream in mind, Nar moved to the Sacramento area from Santa Cruz and in 2000, Nar Fine Carpentry was founded. “I love the Sacramento area,” he said. “I love the vibrancy of the community and the way it has embraced itself as a major player as a metropolitan community.” His favorite part of the job? “There’s so many, it’s ridiculous,” he said. “I feel like I’m living in a dream and I’m not actually working, just playing and having fun.”But, he does admit that one of his favorite things about a job is the adventure the whole team takes together and watching everyone grow, from the clients to his staff to himself.

In 1997, Holly Robinson Peete, along with her hus-band, former Detroit Lions Quarterback, Rodney Peete, started the HollyRod Foundation to help bring aware-ness to autism issues, support families in crisis and raise funds. After an incredibly stressful year of doctor's visits and watching her son RJ's behavior change drastically. At the age of three, Holly Robinson Peete’s son was officially diagnosed with autism. From that moment on, she imme-diately went to work forming Hollyrod4kids in order to fo-cus on improving the lives of autistic children. Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder, characterized by impaired social interaction, verbal and non-verbal communication and restrictive or repetitive behavior. This disorder has a broad spectrum with varying degrees of severity. Ac-cording to the Hollyrod Foundation, 1 in 68 children and 1 in 42 boys are diagnosed every year with the disorder. Boys are five times more likely to be diagnosed as girls and sadly, every 11 minutes another child receives a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder. Although scientists are not certain on the exact causes of Autism, researchers have identified a number of genes associated with the disor-der. And while there is currently no cure, there are many therapies and behavioral interventions that are designed to remedy specific symptoms and bring about substantial improvement. Each treatment plan is unique to the child and meets their own specific needs. Stella & Dot, the global fashion accessories brand, has partnered with the HollyRod Foundation for the third year in a row to help raise funds and spread awareness. All of us one time or another have heard the term Mello Roos, but do you really know how it originated and how you benefit from it when you purchase a home. Pete Dawson, Fidelity Title Co., AVP Sales Executive here in El Dorado Hills shared this information with me recently. I found it very informative... WHERE DID MELLO-ROOS COME FROM?When Proposition 13 passed in 1978, it severely limited the ability of local governments to use property taxes to construct public facilities and services. As a result, Californians were forced to find new ways to fund public improvements in their respective locales. The Mello Roos Community Facilities Act of 1982 was co-authored by Senator Henry Mello or the Monterey are and Los Angeles assemblyman Mike Roos. Enacted by the California legislature, the act enabled “Community Facilities Districts” (CFD’s) to be established by local government agencies as a means of obtaining this crucial community funding. Today the colloquial name for the Facilities Act of 1982 is simply Mello Roos.

WHAT PUBLIC FACILITIES ARE FUNDED BY MELLO ROOS?School districts are the most common beneficiaries. Since state funds are not available to provide the quality of facilities necessary in every community in California, Mello Roos makes the acquisition of timely financing possible. In addition, Mello Roos can provide financing for other vital community needs. These needs include the construction and maintenance of public roads, traffic light systems, storm sewers, water mains, police stations, fire stations, ambulance services, public libraries, recreational parks, museums and cultural facilities. HOW IS COMMUNITY FUNDING PROVIDED?Let’s say, for example, that plans for a new school are approved in your Community Facilities District. To finance the school, tax exempt municipal bonds are issued. These public bonds are repaid (or secured) over an extended time through the levy of a special tax (Mello Roos) on properties that benefit from the facility. This tax is usually added to the annual property tax bills (over a 20-25 year period) of residences with the CFD. Commercial and industrial property owners are also subject to Mello Roos. All proceeds raised from Mello Roos assessments must be used exclusively to finance the specific public facilities and/or services that wereauthorized in your CFD.

HOW MUCH WILL I BE ASSESSED?This will vary from one CFD to another. Typically, an adopted formula that relates to the size of the home (square footage or lot size) is used to determine the amount of an individual assessment. In general, the special taxes and assessments do not exceed 1% to 1.5% of the market value of new homes. Moreover, the total amount of all annual taxes (including property tax) usually does not exceed 2% to 2.5% of the home’s market value.

WILL MY MELLO ROOS TAX INCREASE?It can. However, this special tax can increase only at a maximum rate of 2% per year over a 25 year period. On the other hand it’s possible that this tax will decrease, should the state or other funds become available that could be used to reduce existing bond in-debtedness, or be used to construct new facilities in lieu of additional bond sales.

CAN I CHOOSE HOW TOPAY FOR MELLO ROOS?Yes. The special assessment can be added to your property tax bills until your portion of the tax is paid off. Those who purchase a new home also have the option to pay for their Mello Roos tax in it’s entirety at the time they buy.

CHUNKY TexturesWith so many flat and smooth surfaces in every space, adding a touch of texture can definitely liven up a room and add some interest. Try a chunky knit or even a tex-tured ceramic. To keep this look sophisticated, we sug-gest adding one texture at a time such as a pouf, decora-tive pillow or throw. Sticking to neutral colors are a sure way to use year-around, however don’t be scared to throw in a bright option this spring or summer.

NEUTRALS with a PopNot just your boring beige anymore, neutrals this year are taking great strides continuing with the soft greys, hunter green, blush pinks and navy blue. Try staple pieces in your space using these hues, and add a dramatic pop of color with your accents to build a fun color palette.

UPDATED MetallicsStainless steel although a timeless piece, is starting to see its exit as updated metallics are starting to take center stage. Copper for one, is making a comeback and is a beautiful choice to introduce into your space this spring. Tranquil and scenic Mendocino has long been one of our favorite places to go for a romantic escape. Stunning bluffs overlooking one of the most dramatic coastlines anywhere, offers romanticists an idyllic vacationing experience. Although this article is emphasizing romance, keep in mind that the Mendocino region offers much more than amorous holidays since it’s also an ideal destination for family vacations, outdoor adventure trips, small meetings and just a great place for relaxation and rejuvenation.

Depending on traffic it can take from 6-8 hours by car from our area, but once you leave Highway 101 onto Route 128, you’ll enjoy one of the most scenic drives in California, encouraging numerous stops. The route passes through picturesque Anderson Valley wine country vineyards, majestic Navarro Redwoods Park and along meandering Navarro River. Visits to celebrated wineries, like Roderer Estates and Scharffenberger Cellars, both recognized for their award winning sparkling wines, will tempt the oenophiles. As you arrive at the coastline’s Highway 1 you’ll find a plethora of spectacular coastal photographical moments- one after another -as you head south to Elk or north to Mendocino.

WHERE TO Stay When it comes to any cupid driven escapes we have four personal favorite lodging choices. Heading north on California One to the town of Little River, we arrive first at the Heritage House Resort long known as the jewel of the Mendocino Coast and famous as the setting for the movie “Same Time Next Year.” After being closed for around 5 years it reopened with such stunningly refurbished accommodations and promise that the locals and longtime vacationers to this 37 acre paradise are hoping for an ongoing successful rebirth. If the owners continue the planned upgrades to more rooms, open the deluxe spa as planned and have success with their new management company the future should be bright. A little further north, one of our longtime favorites and the place we’ve stayed most often on the coast is The Little River Inn, the only resort on the Mendocino coast with a golf course. Every time we revisit this delightful historic property we come away with more positive memories. Other onsite amenities include championship tennis courts, a day spa, tremendous views, fine dining and close access to Van Dame Park and Beach. Every time we’ve returned, this fifth generation family-run lodge has provided a generous helping of hospitality, ever improving facilities and exceptional cuisine. Our most recent visit was on point as usual! www.littleriverinn.com. Our next recommendation is Brewery Gulch Inn, just a few more miles north in the town of Mendocino. Although BGI doesn’t have the history of the other two, it’s considered by many critics and guests as the premier lodging property on the coast. We’ve stayed at this newer craftsman style inn twice in the past few years and it always lives up to the positive hype. Beyond the upscale accommodations and a remarkably hospitable staff the owners provide an amazing complimentary evening wine hour with incredible appetizers that continue to blow us and other guests away. Our next top choice requires us to head about 15 miles south to the funky little town of Elk and hunker down at the charming Elk Cove Inn with a coastal setting on a high bluff overlooking more than a mile of pristine beach. Delightful beach walks only steps away, complimentary creative full breakfasts and evening wine hour with light hors d’ oeuvres are hallmarks. Hikes out to the nearby Point Cabrillo Lighthouse and into Russian Gulch State Park to the waterfall are suggested treks. And don’t miss heading up to Ft. The restaurant has been a local favorite for special occasions, date nights, family dinners, and work events for many years and we don’t see that changing anytime soon. The spacious layout and large tables allow the restaurant to accommodate tons of patrons at once without sacrificing privacy or quality of service. THE MENUTheir dinner and lunch menus vary slightly in offering, but the gist is straightforward. Their appetizers contain traditional soups and fan favorites like coconut shrimp and Mongolian BBQ ribs that could be a meal all their own. They also offer a wide variety of light dishes like a blackened Ahi salad or sushi rolls like the cashew salmon roll. Winter was pretty much a no-show this year and It seems as though spring (and most likely summer) have gotten the drop on us again here in Northern California. With the mercury pushing above 70 in February and March we are starting see the, albeit early, tell-tale signs of fun times ahead. Flowers are blooming and trees are finding their leaves, gardens are being planted, the vines are in early bud break and the rosé is being chilled. For decades rosés were ill-represented by the infamous style of “white zin.” Millions of gallons, jugs and boxes have been poured into, and emptied from, stemmed glassware brimming with ice cubes. This was Rosé in America. Even to this day, outside of the great cities and wine producing regions of the country, it is still difficult to wipe the slate clean when it comes to pink wine. The stench of white zin, Aunt Mildred and Wet Lipstick Laden kisses on the cheek still lingers; tarnishing what should be a rock solid reputation for a style of wine that is, in my opinion, one of the most fun and enjoyable to drink.

Times are changing and rosés are now being taken more serious. Rosé is a winemaker’s wine, a fun wine, and there is not an occasion that I can think of where rose is not 100% appropriate. Patio pool party? Check. Romantically wandering through vineyards? Check. Swanky sushi date? Check. Board game night? Check. Binge-watching Netflix? Check. The point is: no matter what you are up to a slightly chilled bottle of pink wine can really elevate any experience. Here are some knowledge nuggets and pieces of advice as you venture into the rosé garden: • Nowadays, most rosés are dry. They are pink so they look sweet and your brain will tell you that they are, but they are not. They are crisp and lean, usually unoaked and ready for anything from a heated match of bocce ball to a Chimichurri steak dinner.

• Stick with single varietal rosés. Blended rosés are often very full bodied and sometimes a little too “sweet.” Single varietals (pinot noir, syrah, grenache) tend to be more elegant and dry and very food-friendly.

• Look for rosé from a winemaker you know, trust and like. Most rosés are small-run, pet projects of the winery and winemaker and chances are that if you like their mainstream wines, you’ll probably like their rosés.

• Just as with any other wine; beware the “cheap rosé.” While the stigma of wine zin and iced down pink juice at a pool party still remains, rosé is actually a very serious wine and a great rosé can fetch $50-$100. Though if you stick in the $15-$40 range in the store or a restaurant, you should be able to select a great wine.

Get ahead of the curve, leave chardonnay in the dust, pack and store the zins away for the summer and break out the rosé. Chances are if you insert these beauties into your summer, you have just a little more fun popping corks, twisting caps and sharing wine with friends.

Legend has it every year, before the growing season is in full swing, coyotes sneak into their vineyard and invoke treachery upon irrigation. Then they saunter into the nearby field, place their paws together and dance around the moon to celebrate their act of terror. Aside from their humorous tales and local lore, the legend of the Dancing Coyote and their wines is one of five generations of local farmers. The live and breath the Delta land and today they are proud caretakers of more than 600 acres of wine grapes. The production of perfect grapes and exceptional wines is the family heritage. Their devotion to just that is why every wine connoisseur must stop by their tasting room and taste the legend for themselves. It’s a family legacy with spectacular results.

COYOTE ATMOSPHERE AND WINESDon’t let the lore of coyotes scare you off. Their location in the Clarksburg appellation is known for pleasing foodies and winos alike. The great fertile ground, the Delta breeze, and temperate climate pair for both exquisite varietals and leisurely walks with a glass of wine. INGREDIANTS:1/2 shallot, finely chopped2 tablespoons raspberry or champagne vinegar2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil8 ounces baby spinach1 cup strawberries, thinly sliced1/2 cup almonds, toasted and chopped2 ounces fresh goat cheese, crumbled

DIRECTIONS:In a large bowl, whisk together shallot and vinegar. While whisking constantly, drizzle in oil to make a vinaigrette. Add spinach, strawberries, almonds and goat cheese and gently toss to combine. Serve immediately.

Now that spring cleaning is in your past, and summer parties are just around the corner, we declare DIY season officially in business. From planting new landscape accents to pulling out old carpet, there are a few essentials better left to the professionals and a couple that just might save you from a total rip off. Whether your an avid DIYer or a novice at taking on home projects the following are important things to consider before any home renovations.

DO: QUOTE ME ON THAT With the exception of a poor business model, many landscapers, contractors, and other home improvement professionals give a free quote to anyone looking to upgrade their abode. Take the time to call a few well-known companies and make sure that the price of doing it yourself is really worth the savings. Frequently, with wholesale discounts and other perks of being a licensed home improvement company, a professional just might cost a little bit more with a faster turn around. Sometimes time is more valuable than money.

DON’T: FAKE IT TILL YOU MAKE ITMany people feel that because they saw a professional do something once, they will be able to recreate the work. From installing hardwood floors to adding that new backsplash, preparation if the key to success. Plan ahead and do your research. Youtube and Pinterest offer a plethora of DIY aids that could save you and keep you from finding yourself half way through a room revamp with painted carpets and hardwood walls. Yes you did read that correctly, hardwood flooring doesn’t belong on the walls.

DO: GO ON A SHOPPING SPREEOkay, that might be a bit of an exaggeration. The whole point of a DIY project is to save money. What we mean is do buy too many supplies. Contractors from the DIY network recommend that you purchase an extra 10% on all your supplied. You never know what the kids, the dog, or the husband just might mess up and extra supplies save you worry and those bothersome trips to the store. However, keep your receipt. You can always return the extra once the project is completed.

DON’T: SHOCK YOURSELF This is a twofold don’t. First, do not under any circumstance mess with electrical wiring or the main structure of your home without an electrician or contractor. When you mess it up, your insurance isn’t going to help. If they mess it up, which they likely won’t if you hired an experienced professional, their insurance will. Second, don’t go into a situation blind. If you’re knocking down drywall, know what’s behind it. If you’re pulling out grass know what’s in your dirt.

Renovations are best the time of the year for those who savor a customized and beautiful home. Soak up the knowledge, plan ahead, and get to work! Follow these simple rules and you’ll be a home improvement professional in no time at all. Happy DIYing!
