Supplement vs. Supplant Instruction
■ Comprehensive course, supplants existing curriculum: – Can be used for distance learning
■ Supplemental, enhances existing curriculum: – To be used in conjunction with an existing
practice
CASE STUDY: ABE MATHTeachers observed their students having to wait to proceed with their ABE math contracts, as there was often a long line waiting
their turn for one-on-one help from ABE teacher.
Solution:
Create a supplemental course linking the ABE Math contract to Khan Academy tutorial videos
CASE STUDY: ESL CITIZENSHIP
In response to requests from the field, the Division agreed students needed a way to accelerate their preparation for the naturalization test and interview as well as curation of resources/forms related to students’ paths to citizenship.
Solution:Create a supplemental course with the USCIS published resources, necessary forms and practices, and test/interview preparation
