Learning for the purpose of understanding

Definition The philosophy of education is the study of the

purpose, process, nature and ideals of education. This can be within the context of education as a societal institution or more broadly, as the process of human existential growth, i.e. our understanding of the world is continually transformed via physical, emotional, cognitive and transcendental experiences.

It can naturally be considered a branch of both philosophy and education.

I am continually evolving as an educator

I am expanding my knowledge of teaching-learning theories

As part of my masters in nursing degree, I completed an “online nurse-educator program”

I believe that the use of distance learning is paramount in nursing education

Linking of Philosophies My philosophy of teaching is strongly linked to my

philosophy of nursing

Patient teaching is yet another function of nursing

As a clinical nursing instructor in an Associate Degree Nursing program (ADN), I consider the teaching role to be an extension of my nursing practice

Phenomenology Phenomenology is a movement in philosophy that has

been adapted by sociologists

It promotes an understanding of the relationship between states of individual consciousness and social life

It seeks to reveal how human awareness is implicated in the production of social action, social situations and social worlds

Phenomenology was initially developed by Edmund Husserl (1859-1938), a German mathematician

He presented various philosophical conceptualizations and techniques designed to locate the sources or essences of reality in the human consciousness

There is a logical and organized approach to a subjective meaning in an objective world

Prior to World War II, phenomenologically inclined scholars came to the United States

This information was transmitted in sociological circles of academia

Phenomenology lends itself to the logic of nursing and the understanding of the human experience

Pain How does one interpret or measure a patient’s pain?

I believe that pain is subjective

Pain is ……..what the patient says it is

I assess the patient’s pain and rate it on a pain scale and offer the prescribed pain treatment

Theory into Practice Phenomenology has given rise to new theories or

approaches

Reality constructionism and ethnomethodology are recognized to be among the most fertile orientations in the field of sociology (Ritzer 1996).

Caring for family Being a nurse is the

strong core of my existence. I value the human experience and care for my patients in the manner that I want others to care for my family members when they are ill.

It is through this practice that I teach others the same basics of nursing principles.

There is no greater honor that one nurse can bestow upon another than to say: “I would like that nurse to care for my loved one”

Empowerment Empowering novice-nursing students to apply

textbook skills to hospitalized patients is something I really enjoy. Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) students memorize so much information in a short period of time that I find they don't always know what they really know.

Memorize or Synthesize? During clinical teaching I help students make

connections between what they memorize and what they know

I want students to realize the level of knowledge they have when they are reviewing the patient database or charts and when they are assessing their patients

I value the eagerness of nursing students as they strive for professional competence.

It is my goal to help them synthesize this knowledge and apply it in the clinical setting.

Assumptions My primary assumption is that each nursing student

has a strong desire to be a nurse and is willing to put in the work to attain this goal

I hold students accountable for their own learning

I have a love for humanity that is shown in my deep concern for my patients and their families

I want the patient to experience the best possible outcome that is available to them

Be the best you can be I continually strive with my nursing practice to do my

best.

I challenge myself to continually learn new information

Each student brings their own set of values

I can only attempt to pass along the values and philosophies that I maintain

The vast options within the nursing field offers infinite choices to each nursing student to be able to apply their passion and become the best nurse they can be

Always learning I am interested in learning more about curriculum

development

I am interested in intergenerational education. I find that today's student population is made up of a wide range of ages

I became a clinical teacher after gaining expertise as a critical care nurse. I want to maintain my Critical Care Certification

I desire to obtain my Oncology Certification as well as Advanced Holistic Health Certification

As an educator my goal is to find techniques that motivate and facilitate student understanding of the nursing profession

I love to use group interactive Kinesthetic Learning techniques in my teaching

Metaphors help one learn: The vascular system is like the freeway system. Traffic is bad-and so is sluggish blood flow or venous stasis

It is from these experiences that I want to help cultivate the student's educational growth, and enhance their growing body of knowledge

I believe that graduation marks a new beginning point of the ongoing learning required for modern nursing practice
