Lower School Language teacher Christine Ribillard-

Polillo traveled to Quebec over Spring Break with a group of

Fifth Graders and parent chaperones. They visited the HURONS Indian

Reservation, learned how to make maple syrup and danced to local music.

The Seventh Grade celebrated Earth Day by participating in a Roland Park Community cleanup. The class split into five teams to tackle different areas of Roland Park that stretched from Northern Parkway down to Coldspring, including the backwoods. In all, the girls col-lected 436 lbs. of trash and recycling. All trash was sorted into recyclables and waste. The recy-clables went into the school’s bins which Balti-more City collects as part of their single stream recycling initiative.

RPCS welcomes and congratulates incoming freshmen Grace Laria and Emma McCormack who shared the Dixon award at their gradua-tion from Calvert School in June for achieving the highest GPA in the class. This was the first tie in the school’s history. Grace also won the award for sportsmanship on the athletic field and Emma won the arts award.

Ariana Rodriguez, 2016 volleyball team won gold in their division at the South Atlantic Championship tournament in Richmond.

Toni-Ann Williams, 2014 won the all-around and took gold on the balance beam and floor exercise at the Region VII Championship, which qualified her for the Junior Nationals where she placed 1st on the balance beam and 3rd all around.

Members of the Upper School Running Club Martha Isaacs, 2013, Charlotte Jacobsen, 2013 and Libby Grandy, 2013 trained for and completed the Maryland Half Marathon along with their coach Janet Weller, Associate Direc-tor of College Counseling. Melanie Grebow, 2009 also completed her first half marathon at the Illinois Marathon in April.

Rebecca Finney, 2013, Megan Fish, 2012, Sasha Frankel, 2012, Kelsey Dwyer, 2012, Dylan Otterbein, 2012 and Francesca Santini, 2012, along with Greg Timm, Upper School Math teacher, attended an event at the White House hosted by First Lady Michelle Obama along with Girl Up, an organization formed by the United Nations Foundation. The students discussed a day in the life of an African girl and shared common themes that unite girls every-where, no matter where they are born. The event coincided with First Lady Michelle Obama’s trip to Africa where she focused on youth leadership, education, health and wellness.

Casey Merbler, 2011 won 2nd place in the 3rd District Congressional Arts Competition in April. Her work will hang in the Rayburn Con-gressional Office Building in DC through 2012.

Nalda Tilstra, 2003 was the first person in Tulane University history to receive the Tulane 34 Award twice. The award is presented to 34 graduates who have distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate life. Students are rec-ognized for their exemplary leadership, service, and academic excellence. She also received The Order of the Coif from Tulane University Law School, which is a national law school honor so-ciety whose members are selected from the top ten percent of each graduating class.

Carrie Gamper, 2007 was selected for the South team in the 2011 IWLCA/Under Armour North/South Senior All-Star lacrosse game. The game was held at the Champions’ Cup at the United Sports Training Center in June.

Congratulations to Lauren Padussis, 2009 who was named to the Dean’s List at Clemson University this past spring.

Jeanie Walter Teare, 1954 sang four concerts with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in ear-ly June. Jeanie is a member of the Washington Chorus and they performed Verdi Requiem.

Leigh Martin Lowe, Director of College Counseling, has been invited to attend Decem-berFest 2011 an invitation-only tour of the most selective colleges and universities in California, including California Institute of Technology, Claremont McKenna College, Harvey Mudd College, Occidental College, Pitzer College, Pomona College, Scripps College, University of Redlands and Whittier College. College Coun-selors are eligible to attend every ten years and this will be Leigh’s second tour.

Congratulations to Missie Dix Mack, Director of Alumnae Relations, who won the prestigious Distinguished Alumna Award at SPSG for her outstanding volunteer commitment to her alma mater. Missie, a graduate of the Class of 1979 at SPSG, won the award for the second time!

Nancy Mugele, Director of Marketing and Communication, has been appointed the Inter-im Executive Director of the National Coalition of Girls’ Schools on a part-time basis during the 2011–2012 academic year.

Sara Rollfinke, Upper School Grade Level Dean and Foreign Language Department Chair, has been invited to participate on a national plan-ning board convened by the National Coalition of Girls’ Schools and the Young Women’s Lead-ership Network. The Planning Committee will oversee The Confer-ence on Girls’ Educa-tion to be held in Washington, D.C. in February, 2012.

Megary Sigler, Middle School Art teacher, will have two sculptures on display at Baltimore Clayworks in June in an exhibit en-titled, Clay from the Classroom.

College Admissions counselors from various colleges and universities near Baltimore held individual mock interviews for the juniors and six members of the faculty and Administra-tion led small groups of stu-dents in essay writing exercises and also worked individually with students on their personal essays. The goal was for each junior to leave at the end of the day with at least one personal essay to use for college applica-tions. Elizabeth Howard, 2012 noted, “I feel confident that the essay writing workshop, and other things provided by RPCS are geared to helping us get into college.” As the rising seniors left for their summer vaca-tion, the College Counseling Office was pleased that they are getting a head start on completing college applications.

Red Hot RunON SUNDAY, May 22 Roland Park Country School held its inaugural Red Hot 5k Run and 1 Mile Family Fun Walk. Proceeds from the race will benefit the Endowment for Faculty Compensation and the Endow-ment for Student Financial Assistance. Assistant Director of Alumnae Relations Katy Spencer, 1994 remarked, “with a few precious hours of sunshine last Sunday along with over 320 registrants, there was quite a festive atmosphere on campus.” Congratulations to the following RPCS students, parents and employees who placed in the Red Hot Run: Audrey Todd, 2012 was the 2nd female over-all and top student runner, Martha Issacs, 2012 was the 3rd female overall, Sophia Rockefeller, 2020 was the top female in the 15 and under group, Lindsay Wong, 2011 was the top female in the 16–19 group, Emily Sunder-land, 2009 was the top female in the 20–29 group, Laura Shmerler, P’2020, 2016, was the top female in the 40–49 group, Upper School science teacher Rod Tiplady was the top male in the 60–69 group, Fitness Center Coordina-tor Sean Donmoyer and Director of Annual Giving Alysa Porter were the top employees and Admissions Associate Kathleen Curtis was the top Alumnae.

Congratulations to the Varsity Badminton Team! RPCS finished with the most overall points, giving them the IAAM team title. Sophomore Katie Tutrone made it to the finals of the singles competition and the team of seniors Annie Gaines and Cameron Steadley made it to the doubles finals. Coach Jane Seibert remarks, “We worked really hard for the last five years to bring this team to the athletic level that is now. It is really exciting to be the team conference champion.” For the first time, the IAAM Badminton Championships were held in the RPCS

Athletic Complex. The RPCS Varsity golf team,

led by senior Erin Golueke, won the IAAM A Conference title for the 5th consecutive year. Erin’s combined score of 78 earned her the A Conference individual title. Alina Jong, 2011 finished in 3rd place with a score of 87 and Meredith Birely, 2012 finished 5th with a score of 90. Coach Tara Kramer explained her team’s success, “Our team is very disciplined, and we stick to our plan. The girls are hard

workers, and they have a lot of trust in one another.”

The Varsity lacrosse team entered the season unranked and finished No. 2 in the Baltimore Sun’s weekly poll. After a 12–11 victory over Bryn Mawr in the IAAM A Conference semi-finals, the Reds earned a championship berth for the first time since 2004. Despite an inspired effort and overwhelming fan support, RPCS lost to McDonogh 18–17 in a tightly contested game.
