D’Amico Succeeds Howe asChamber President 2010

L aura D’Amico, branch manager of Century 21 Citiwide located onBroadway, was sworn in as Chamber

president at the De-cember BusinessBreakfast.

Taking over from Jeff Howe(VP/Branch Man-ager of CitizensBank, Broadway),Ms. D’Amico bringsher vast knowledgeof Revere’s businesscommunity, famili-arity with currentissues and good-natured tenacity tothe Chamber’s table.

Ms. D’Amico is a lifelong resident of Revere with 30 years experience in the realestate industry and 20 years experience in

managing up to 60 agents.Previously, D’Amico served as a direc-

tor on the boards of the Revere Chamber of Commerce, Revere Santa Fund, Women’sCouncil of Realtors, and the MassachusettsAssociation of Realtors. Additionally,D’Amico is a past president and Paul HarrisFellow of the Revere Rotary Club.

“I’m very excited about being theChamber president and I feel lucky to havea very good board of directors and staff,”

said D’Amico. “We’ve already made somechanges toward revitalizing the Chamber.I’m going to carry on what Jeff has started

and hopefully, reallyget a lot of support,”she said.“Like many of our members, the RevereChamber of Com-merce is experiencingan unprecedentedfinancial challengeand the Board of Di-rectors, key commit-tees and staff haveconcentrated on fin-ing an appropriates o l u t i o n , ” s a i dD’Amico.

As part of that solution, the RevereChamber of Commerce has revised its duesstructure for 2010. Additionally, the Cham-

ber has begun researching possible solutionsto the overwhelming parking problem inRevere’s business districts. (See relatedstories inside.)

At last count, Reverehas three main areasthat use meters in con-

junction with traffic control personnel to help regulate parking activi-ties: Broadway, Shirley Avenue andOcean Avenue along with portions of

some adjacent streets. At most of thesemeters, 25 cents will get you 30 minutesof parking. However, weather tempera-ture, meter condition, coin jams andother factors can impact meter time andaccuracy. In all cases, there is a two-hour parking limit that is strictly en-forced. In all areas, the fine for parkingat an expired meter or violating the two-hour limit is $20, payable to the City

With a new board of direc-tors and slate of officersnewly-sworn in, the

Chamber is ready to face the chal-lenges of a new economic climatefull of changes and specialconsiderations.

One of the biggestchanges comes as the Re-

vere Chamber of Com-merce announces a new,streamlined dues structurefor 2010, effective January12, 2010. The Chamber will still offer members dis-count rates for regular andspecial events and offer-ings.

“Our goal in revisingour dues structure is tomake membership in the

Revere Chamber of Commerce moreaccessible across all sectors of Re-vere’s business community,” saidChamber president Laura D’Amico.“Whether a company is large, me-dium or small, membership in theChamber comes with benefits, in-cluding access to an aggressive, busi-ness-based agenda; government rela-tions initiatives; and proactive publicrelations programs. All of these

Chamber initiatives are designed toimprove the economic climate for businesses in and around Revere.”D’Amico said.

While some businesses will

see a slight increase in their annualdues (only $15 annually), overallthe Chamber’s new dues structure islower. In fact, compared to other nearby chambers of commerce andtrade associations, membership inRevere Chamber of Commerce isnow more affordable than most.

The new streamlined structurecondenses the price breaks to threecategories, Small (0-1 employee);

Medium (2-50 employees); andLarge (51 or more employees). An-nual dues are $100; $200; and, $300respectively. Membership is renew-able annually on the anniversary of

your enrollment date.The Chamber’s

Board of Directors feelsthat, overall, the new

dues structure positionsthe Revere Chamber ofCommerce as one of themore affordable Cham- bers in the Boston area.“Previously, we had sixdifferent price breaksthat were determined bynumber of employeesand/or type of business,”said Laurie Leone,Chamber Executive Di-

rector. “With that system, there was a$440 difference in annual dues be-tween some members. The new sys-tem makes the whole process easierand more equitable for more people,”said Leone.

Chamber Researches Parking Meter Sticker Programwithin 21 days.

For business owners, shoppers,and workers, the current system seemstoo stringent, inconvenient and down-right frustrating. Customers say it’shard to find a spot near businesses andworkers say they get blanketed with

tickets when all they want to do is getto work.

Recognizing this frustration,the Revere Chamber of Commerce isresearching alternatives that may beuseful to the City to more efficientlyregulate parking and more effectivelycollect fees for parking at meteredspaces. While building a municipal parking garage(s) might sound like an

answer, there are questions about loca-tion, feasibility and cost. Another possible solution, the Chamber feels, might beto adopt a meter sticker program, similarto one that’s been employed by the Cityof Everett since June 2001. In Everett,meter stickers enable residents, business

owners and their employees to purchase pre-paid parking privileges for use atcertain meters each month for a set fee.

While there is no quick fix for parking problems in Revere, the Cham- ber hopes to open dialogue that may leadto at least some relief for business own-ers, their customers and employees. TheChamber is planning a meeting withMayor Ambrosino to discuss this topic.
