WATAUGA HIGH SCHOOL

Last year it was decided by county representatives to build a new high school. For one of my studio classes, we designed prototypical spaces for the new school. The first step was to decide as a class what our overall concept would be. Metamorphosis was chosen because it was the best word to describe the direction we wanted the whole project to take. Metamorphosis represents the changes each individual student goes through in high school. We also used the curve of a butterfly’s wings throughout the design of the school. My group was assigned to design a prototypical cafeteria doing all drawings by hand. We started by sketching possible floor plans to analyze traffic patterns.

My group realized that a curved plan would be the best way to fit 500 students in the cafeteria at one time. It was also the best plan for circulation patterns. One main aspect of our design was providing natural light which is done with the curved wall of windows and skylights in the ceiling. Two levels in the dining area were designed so all students could enjoy seeing outside. Another important aspect is the recycling areas which are located near the dish drop off and the trash area. In the reflected ceiling plan, tensile structures are used to diffuse direct light coming through the skylights and to create visual interest. My group used recessed downlights to provide general light in the absence of sunlight.

My group and I used a couple different ceiling heights in our design. We created a high, domed ceiling in the main dining area to allow for more windows and natural light. We also designed little sections of drop down ceiling with pendant lights. The tensile structures connect at these drop downs and angle upward to filter the natural light. The building section I drew helped to illustrate the heights we envisioned. The perspective shows the overall view of the

dining area from the entry way.

I drew two elevations to show the main recycling wall. This is the wall located by the main entrance into the cafeteria. The top elevation shows how the recycling area will look to students. The lower elevation shows the recycling center from the inside of the dish drop off room showing exactly how the recycling area works. Recyclable items are dropped through the openings and the items land in large bins which roll out from cabinet doors. The idea was to conceal the recycling bins on the dish drop off room side. I also drew the two details of the register area. This is a basic and easy way for students to purchase their food.

KERR SCOTT KIOSK

The Kerr Scott Building on Appalachian State University’s campus is poorly designed because of the additions that have been made to the building. My partner and I designed a kiosk to help visitors and new students find their way through the building. This kiosk would also explain what programs are offered in the Kerr Scott Building. My partner and I used PietMondrian’s Composition A: Composition with Black, Red, Grey, Yellow, and Blue as inspiration. We wanted a kiosk made of different materials like glass, wood, and metal which would represent all the different programs offered in Kerr Scott. Our concept was juxtaposition: bringing things together as a way to compare and contrast. JUXTAPOSITION

My partner and I wanted to show our concept throughout the space. We designed a bench built into the TV wall for extra seating. The wood panels protrude from the wall at different measurements and are stained different colors. The kiosk wall helps explain where the wall is placed in the space. I left the stained glass panels out of the elevation to show the display shelving on the landing. the study area has desks at different levels. The lower level desks invite people to sit and stay awhile. The upper level desks are for people to stand and wait at. On the office wall, we designed an art piece that incorporates photographs of people of different programs doing tasks with their hands. There is also more seating outside of the office.

JUXTAPOSITION

My partner and I constructed a model of our kiosk using foam core, balsa wood, and plexy glass. The kiosk itself is made up of different stained panels of wood and metal panels with a metal reveal. On the metal panel on the left, my partner and I provided places for important papers that students and visitors can take. We have designed for a touch-screen computer that would allow for people to find out information regarding Kerr Scott and the programs. Next to this panel are maps of the building. We have provided a computer workstation, on the right, for students to access the Appstate webpage. We have also designed frosted, stained glass panels in a way that continues the Mondrian effect while hiding the double doors.

The 14-hour charette was a project done with a partner in 14 hours. My partner and I were assigned to research a brand of chocolate (Dagoba), Costa Rica (where the chocolate is from), and restaurant design as the first step of the project. Then, we were told to design a chocolate store completely done by hand rather than using Autocad. we used parti diagrams to figure out spatial relationships and develop our concept. My partner and I wanted to create a space that had a comfortable and natural feeling. We, therefore, decided on the concept flourish because it can represent not only the direction our design took but

also Costa Rica.

14-HOUR CHARETTE

My partner and I created a simple floor plan with plenty of dining space and a large kitchen for functionality. We provided a stage in the dining area for small performances like local bands or poetry readings. One important aspect of our design was to provide recycling areas placed near exits for easy access. In our reflected ceiling plan, my partner and I designed a thatched roof over the dining area to create the feel of a hut. We used track lighting and recessed down lights to provide general as well as task lighting for the dining room. In the kitchen, we used fluorescent lighting for the best and cheapest way to light this large area. In my perspective I drew the view when one enters the space.

CUSTOM COACH

I was assigned to design a custom coach for a famous client, Richard Branson. I researched Richard Branson and was able to design a custom coach without ever contacting him. I designed the coach thinking Mr. Branson and his family would use it, so I created a master bedroom at the back of the coach for he and his wife. In the hallway, I provided two bunk beds for Mr. Branson’s two children. There is also a closet and built-in drawers for storage. A pocket door is used to separate the private areas from the social areas. In the living area, I designed a small kitchen and living room. The room becomes bigger and more comfortable with the pop-out section. On the exterior I chose a funky

graphic and the Virgin logo.

CUSTOM COACH

The perspective shows the living room and kitchen. In the living room I planned to have carpet and in the kitchen I planned for a light colored, bamboo floor. The two lateral elevations I drew help illustrate my overall design for the custom coach. When I researched Richard Branson, I found that he seems to like neutral colors, so all the walls of the interior are neutral, but I used the furniture to add some color. Being the founder of Virgin Records, I thought it would be important to provide televisions and other entertainment media in the custom coach. I placed one plasma screen television in the master bedroom and designed drop-down plasma screen televisions above the bunk beds and in the living

room. RICHARD BRANSON

ADVERTISING AGENCY

For this project, my partner and I were to design an advertising agency that focuses on the gaming industry. We were to use Herman Miller’s office systems to create an office landscape. First, my partner and I came up with a concept. We chose lucid because it means simple, clear, and easy to understand. This would fit the simplicity we wanted to have in our design. Choosing neutral colors for the walls and adding pops of color using bright orange and blue fit our concept. We named the advertising agency GripItAdvertising because it directly relates to the gaming industry by the way one grips a game controller. The perspectives I drew show our design ideas for the space. LUCID

ADVERTISING AGENCY

The Resolve system and Ethospace system fit our concept, lucid, perfectly. The resolve system was used in the open office area for the designers and the account managers. Ethospace was used in the individual offices for the office manager and firm director. We also used desks from Ethospace for the front desk in the lobby and for a desk in the production room. In the reflected ceiling plan, my partner and I decided on a monorail track lighting system that can be bent or curved in any way that is needed. Simple recessed down lights are used in the restrooms and the back stairways. We also designed the space to have an open ceiling with a drop ceiling in the restrooms and maintenance room. LUCID

BILL HORN YOUTH CENTER

My partner and I were to design a youth center for Watauga County and the Western Youth Network. Being that this idea was a dream of a local doctor, Dr. Bill Horn, it was suggested that we might name the youth center after him. Our client, a Western Youth Network representative, wanted us to design a space for middle school and high school age kids to “hang-out” outside of school hours. We wanted to create a space that encouraged energy and movement so we decided on sonic as our concept since it refers to sound. I created a mass model to illustrate our building design using foam core as the only material. This model shows how my partner and I want the youth center to have plenty of windows. SONIC

SONIC

On the first floor, we wanted the lobby/entrance to be like an atrium with natural light and plants. We provided plenty of seating in the lobby as “hang-out” space or study space for kids. A computer lab offers internet access for those who do not have access at home and allows kids to do internet or computer related homework. My partner and I provided a game room with ping pong table, pool tables, and air hockey tables as well as multiple televisions. A central cafeteria gives kids healthy meals and snacks. There is a stage located in this area for small concerts and performances. The back half of the first floor is dedicated to physical activity. We designed a full-size basketball court with retractable bleachers for games and practice. Men’s and

women’s locker rooms are available next to the rock wall room. My partner and I designed an open aerobics room and a workout room with exercise equipment. We also provided a storage room for all the activities that might take place in the youth center.

The second floor is more of a quiet floor with offices for Western Youth Network representatives, classrooms for tutoring and studying, and a counseling center. My partner and I were asked by our client to design fifteen offices, a conference room, and a break room/lounge. We designed three classrooms for students to receive tutoring or to have a quiet place to study and work on homework. A counseling center offers kids a place to go and talk to professional counselor to help with their emotional well-being which is important for kids at middle school and high school ages.My perspective shows our design for the lobby with our bright color choices which help illustrate our concept, sonic. Also, we have Bill Horn Youth Center on one of the main walls in the lobby.
