Rationale for Technology Integration

• Interactive simulations and illustrations from technology can produce a much greater depth of understanding for a concept

• This presentation will demonstrate how teachers can use different forms of technology to make their classroom more engaging

• Technology also helps create an effective learning environment

Reliability of Sources

• All URLs are linked to the original website

• All sources included in this presentation are reliable and provide accurate information about high school geometry

• The geometry teacher is….Andrew Shauver. He is an instructional technology specialist in mid-Michigan. He was a secondary level geometry teacher and received his bachelor’s degree in secondary mathematics from Western Michigan University.

Instructional Video• This instructional video is from Mathtrain.com which is a free educational

“kids teaching kids” project from students at Lincoln Middle School in Santa Monica, CA

• The video linked below is a 2 min and 25 second visual look at the area of a circle

• Teachers can show this video to his or her students during the lesson about the area of a circle to give the students a visual picture on how to calculate the area

Kahn Academy Video

• Here is another video that gives great explanations on circles, the parts of a circle and its circumference. Teachers should use this as a visual introduction for their unit on circles.

Internet Resources

• CommonCoreConversation- This website offers a wide variety of information about math resources for not only teachers but parents as well.

• AWWWARDS- Although this website will not teach your students a lesson on geometry, it is a website where students can see pictures of extraordinary geometric shapes

• HomeSchoolMath- This website has a huge selection of different activities, games, tutorials and books teachers can use for their geometry lessons

This crossword puzzle is designed to practice geometric vocabulary and recognize formulas. There are 23 different geometric terms and formulas which include circles, formulas for area, surface area, and volume. All of these topics will be adressed in a 9th or 10th grade geometry class. This could also be used as a study tool for students when wrapping up a unit or even for a final exam.

Teaching Material #3• Geometry Pad is an app for

ipads where you can create geometric shapes, explore and change their properties and calculate their measurements. I think this would be perfect for high school students with ipadsbecause they can use this app not only in school but at home to help them study or do their homework. I just downloaded this app as well for my Grad level geometry course and I love it!

Teaching Material #4

• Here is a jeopardy game that teachers can create for their students to review for a final exam. They can split their class into teams and make it competitive for them by maybe giving extra credit to the winning team.

Subject-specific Internet-based Resources

• Aplusmath.com is an interactive website that includes many math resources not only for teachers and students but for parents as well. There are worksheets, games, flashcards and homework help for all math subjects including some cool geometry games.

Uses of the Internet: Interactive Websites

• Interactive websites like Illuminations.com are perfect for math and especially geometry because they give the students the ability to create their own shapes. Module 7 Task 1 suggested exploring Geometric Solids from this website, and it could not be a more perfect fit for 9th and 10th grade geometry.

Uses of the Internet: Online Reference Materials

• Dictionary.com may not seem like it is the most useful for math, but in my opinion it is the most useful for any subject. Students need an easy access to a website they can search for any word they do not understand. Teachers do too! Teachers do not know EVERYTHING, and they sometimes need a website where they can search for words as well.

Web 2.0

• PlanbookEdu.com is perfect for teachers! Teachers need another way to organize all of their classes without wasting paper. This way teachers can have all of their lessons in one place and are available at any time and easy to create. Teachers are also able to attach files, print their lesson plans and even share them with their colleagues.
