Planning for the future with the customer in mind

After celebrating 50 years in the business, Girbau has launched a new strategic plan that will guide the organisation from 2011 through to 2013. The main goal is to create value for everyone in the Girbau world: customers, employees, su-ppliers and the environment. It will encourage a family business model that is multinational and customer-focused, with an innovative and proactive attitude.

The future vision enshrined in the new strategic plan is one of working to ensure strong growth, with a long term project aimed at offering quality products and services.

The mission is to offer customers washing and iro-ning solutions based on our own industrial pro-ducts and situated in a global market, maintaining a leadership position in terms of quality, safety and product and service innovation, with an enhanced respect for the environment.

Girbau’s strategic goals range from maximising the way we provide customer value, listening more ac-tively to the customer and to the market in order to develop products and services tailored to their needs.

Glocalisation as a business strategyGirbau’s business concept can be summed up as glo-calisation. I.e. working and thinking globally for all segments of the market in the different countries, while acting on the ground locally via an extensive sales force and technical network.

The aim is to ensure that the client feels that Girbau is close at hand at all times for advice or troubles-hooting, and that moreover it is accompanying the customer as they grow. The wide product range allows laundries of any size to be equipped. For instance, there are customers who started out with a small hotel, that have since grown into powerful hotel groups with high production laun-dries in different countries. Girbau has accompa-nied them from the outset, without limitations in terms of geography or product, without barriers to growth.

The strategic plan envisages creating value for the customer, the company, employees and suppliers, while maintaining the commitment to society

The slogan that sums up the strategic plan for the next 3 years projects the need to foster teamwork in order to provide customers with solutions

Consolidation of the growth and internationalisa-tion policyThe group maintains its goal to continue improving customer service by opening new subsidiaries that bring it closer to its clients. Girbau’s network of subsidiaries has recently been expanded to include Italy and the Dominican Republic. The newly opened subsidiaries are a demonstration of Girbau’s interest in strengthening its commitment to historical markets. Girbau World

A new subsidiary in the Dominican Republic. After 18 years working in the Dominican Republic via a dealer, Girbau has de-cided to establish a subsidiary based in Punta Cana and headed by Noel Torres. The new subsidiary celebrated its launch with an opening cere-mony on the 18th of last March.

The Italian branch opens its doors. After many years be-ing represented in Italy by the company Tecnowash di Vittorio Balbi-Milano, the Girbau Group has opened its own branch in the country. The opening of Girbau Italy demonstrates the company’s commitment to closer customer relations - one of the group’s strategic goals.

A decade in Dubai. Coinciding with the Gulfood Dubai trade fair, Girbau Middle East celebrated its tenth anniversary with a dinner attended by major dealers in the region and by the Girbau management. In particular, the event was an opportunity to highlight the excellent results achieved by the subsidiary, which has become the leading company in large-scale laundry facilities with batch washers in the United Arab Emirates.

Girbau’s 15th anniversary in the US. Around a hundred people came together in Vic (Barcelona) last autumn to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Continental Girbau Inc., the Group’s US subsidiary. CGI, positioned in many areas of the American market, is expanding its industrial laundry division strongly into hotel chains, hospitals and in-dustrial laundries.

The Girbau brandToni RubiésVice-president, Sales, Marketing and Services Girbau Group

When a customer purchases a Girbau machi-ne they buy into a set of values that goes far beyond the value of the machine itself. Capital goods require features and professional-grade guarantees that are not offered in other sectors. Our challenge is to satisfy these demands while maintaining an excellent quality/price ratio. Our traditionally long-lasting equipment is now

backed by a much more proactive warranty policy and an extensive global technical assistance network - the result of Girbau being established in over 80 countries. Today we offer the support of teams that specialise in large-scale installations and provide the close relationship demanded by laundry profes-sionals while also promoting the technical hotline and the GLT specialising in washing processes.

Girbau’s guaranteed quality and reliability is now complemented by the accele-rating pace of our innovation, which over the last two years has seen the intro-duction of complete flatwork ironing systems, the new ecoTunnel, PB wall-type ironers, MG Washers, new processors and control systems for high standing washing machines. All this comes with the common aim of achieving savings in resources, increased efficiency and productivity.

The new strategic plan will ensure that Girbau reinforces its policy of conti-nuous improvement, providing the customer with value for money, and renews its commitment to the network of subsidiaries and dealers in order to expand activity into new areas. Girbau machines are highly appreciated by our customers, yet the Girbau brand, our vocation, is what really makes the experience unique for users and stays with them throughout their business cycle.

More proactive warranty policy further enhances product longevity

Productivity depends on the after-sales service

Training services, and joint participation in projects, while gradually introdu-cing technological tools to establish new channels of interaction and support (remote access to equipment, online queries/service requests, etc.).

Every manufacturer can provide customers with equipment and accessories that help them carry out their work productively. In Girbau, we believe that productivity goes much further than just the equipment, and this is why we offer global solutions in which service plays a crucial role in ensuring that any solution works reliably and efficiently.

Our after-sales strategy is to enable and promote the establishment and conti-nued development of local services, with each customer having local support that is fully prepared to respond to their needs, with Girbau’s specialised tech-nical support at the headquarters. Our closeness means peace of mind for our customers.

With this goal in mind, the after-sales service area is being reorganised to pro-vide support for the entire Girbau organisation and service partners, imple-menting a support methodology to ensure the following points effectively: a day to day maintenance service, support and execution of projects, proactive services and technological innovation. This new organisation is based on the concept of “Cloud knowledge”, with areas of expertise for Girbau products and solutions which ensures replication of knowledge for the support network via the Customer Care Hotline and

A good wash - a question of safety for firefighters

Girbau’s new Continental Express Wash washer has been a revolution in the Tisbury Fire Station (Massachusetts). The machine has been a giant step forward in the process of washing firefighters’ uniforms, thus improving their safety. In addition, it has solved the challenge of occupy a restricted space, in a building built in the 1950s.

Their turnout gear is washed in accordance with NFPA (National Fire Pro-tection Association) guidelines, keeping firefighters safe from cancer-causing contaminants that attach to the uniforms when they are exposed to fire in the line of duty.

According to the chief of Tisbury Fire Department, John Schilling, the washing machine, which they have been using since February 2010, “was the answer to our installation and spacing needs. Prior to its installation, turnout gear was outsourced for cleaning, and the uniforms would be out of service for up to four weeks”, he recalls.

To avoid this waiting time, many firefighters put their health at risk by cho-osing not to wash the gear very often. “Some studies have shown that conta-minants on clothing can affect firefighters and their families. Today, for fire-fighters it’s not a badge of honour to have the dirtiest turnout gear” explained Schilling.

Now, thanks to the Continental Express, the washing process has come down from four weeks to one day, and most importantly, it has improved the fire-fighters’ safety.

Girbau’s Express Wash removes contaminants from thefirefighters’ gear with a shorter washing process

The uniforms are clean in one day, following the NFPA guidelines

Since February 2010, the protective equipment and uniforms worn by the Tisbury Fire Department (Massa-chusetts, USA) have been washed with a Girbau Express Wash washing machine. The new Express Wash helps to improve firefighter safety, since its cleaning process completely removes the contaminants attached to uniforms. In addition, the whole washing process takes only one day.

TTH - committed to the ecoTUNNEL

Images of TTH’s EcoTunnel System installation

TTH Laundry Services, one of the fastest growing industrial laundries in the UK, is devoted to laundry leasing and services, and was the first in the country to install Girbau’s high energy performance ecoTUNNEL System. Founded in early 2009, TTH has already established a reputation, and this will be further strengthened thanks to EcoTunnel, the new Girbau batch washer that offers significant competitive and environmental advantages. The 6 module Eco Tunnel system acquired allows it to wash 500 kg of linen per hour, thereby achieving a considerable saving in energy, water, labour and detergent. All these have been key factors in the young company’s decision to choose this system. The immediate goal is to compete with the major players in the laundry service market. The Girbau EcoTunnel also comes with a remote maintenance and technical support package. An automatic modem link to Girbau UK headquarters and the manufacturing plant in Barcelona means that Girbau can constantly monitor the system and provide ongoing remote diagnostics, fault finding and preven-tative maintenance.

Achieving a more competitive laundry

Washing efficiency and savings with ecoTUNNEL

No jams

The position of the beater at the top during the wash greatly reduces the risk of laundry jams. Before every transfer, the level of each module is checked to ensure the transfer. The ecoTUNNEL raises the linen at the time of transfer, providing it with great momentum that ensures the transfer and minimises the risk of jams.

GIRBAU remote support

The ecoTUNNEL is equipped with technology that allows the service to diag-nose and fix issues online in the washing system.

EfficiencyIt incorporates the latest technological advances in order to make the most

of the resources used (water, energy and chemical products)

Quality of the components

All parts and components have been carefully selected and tested in our la-boratories before being fitted to the machines.

Custom-designed projects

The system’s configurability and the large number of options means there is a TBS tunnel to suit every requirement, without sacrificing performance, and without paying for services that are unused or unprofitable

The new ecoTUNNEL is ideal for industrial laundries, hospitals, hotel chains, care home groups, textile leasing businesses or laundries specialising in work linen. There are a host of reasons for choosing this washing system:

All modules are identical and have an outer drum, which allows a great flexi-bility and ability to adapt to any process, control of parameters, new processes, change of chemicals system and configuration modification.

Gentle linen treatment

A central linen transfer prevents the linen from rubbing against the walls of the tunnel, thereby avoiding the usual tangled linen seen in other tunnels. The interior has a high quality finish and provides a unique treatment for the li-nen.

The best mechanical action

Applying the appropriate mechanical action to the linen can reduce the con-sumption of water and chemicals, and reduce temperatures and wash times. The larger drum volume, specially designed wash beaters and an adjustable mechanical action are the keys to achieving optimal mechanical action.

Simplicity and compact design

The tunnel is the most compact in its class. It measures a mere 2.7 m in height, and is an ideal solution for small spaces.

Being a mono-block tunnel, it incorporates the minimum number of mecha-nical and electrical components. Its design features help to reduce maintenan-ce and make it easier to control.

Hygiene and disinfection

Each module can have a separate steam supply and up to 4 different chemical product inputs. It also has an automatic program for disinfecting the tunnel.

With 5 to 12 module setups available, the new system is compatible with all washing technologies

Efficient andcost-effectivelaundries

Jordi MartínezProduct manager

industrial division Girbau Group

The rising cost of energy and natural resources seems unstoppable. In the light of this new reality, it makes sense for all of us to look for ways to be as efficient as possible. On a domestic level, efficiency is one of the main deciding factors for consumers: when buying a new car, putting in double glazing or changing the air conditioning unit, we will no doubt be influenced by the efficiency and savings involved in such an investment. Similarly, the efficiency of health centres and hos-pitals has become an obligation for those managing them, and weighs heavily in their investment deci-sions. Their main goal is to look for more efficient machinery. Girbau has the latest machinery with the latest advances in efficiency and productivity. Washers, batch washers, ironers, flatwork ironers, dryers or any other laundry element are carefully designed to be as efficient as possible. Yet it’s not just about buying more efficient equi-pment. For instance, acquiring the most efficient air conditioner for our living room at home will be a waste of time if we don’t program or use it pro-perly. The same goes for laundries. It is very impor-tant that the laundry is the right size for the work it has to do, and has a suitable layout and adequate workflows. This will make it possible to get the best out of the machinery, while making efficient use of laundry space and optimising processes. At Girbau we never forget that laundries are run by people. We know how important it is for the team to be properly trained. In addition, labour costs are very important in a laundry. With an old design and without automation and good operating practice, one operator is needed for every 70 hospital beds, while in an automated laundry plants with a suita-ble working practice each worker can produce linen for 180 beds. Lastly, preventive maintenance is an essential task to maintain levels of productivity, minimise downti-me and maintain energy efficiency.

Girbau offers its customers the best solutions, based on the four fundamental mainstays of a cost-effective and efficient laundry:- Machinery- Laundry design- Training and advice services- After-sales service.

Success stories

1. Son Espases Hospital The new Son Espases Hospital laundry in Mallorca (Spain) is designed to handle 8,000 kg of linen a day, expandable to 16,000 kg, to wash the linen for the whole centre plus the employees’ uniforms. The medium term goal is to serve all the public hospitals in Mallor-ca. The laundry is equipped with a 12 module batch washer, a sanitary barrier washer, indivi-dual dryers, independent folders, a fully auto-mated flatwork ironing system, an automatic drying and ironing system for uniforms, and a system for sanitizing the trolleys and packa-ger. The linen delivery and collection circuit in the hospital’s 90 stores is managed from the laundry.

2. Mora d’Ebre Hospital In the laundry of the Regional Hospital of

Mora d’Ebre (Spain), the whole process of washing linen in this hospital, from bed linen or towels to health workers and patients’ clo-thing is carried out.

The plant went into operation in late 2010 with six employees and a total production of 2,500 kg per day.

In this laundry, a 200 kg sanitary barrier washer is fully operational, together with two others of 63 and 42 kg, a two-roller gas flat-work ironer, an FL folder, two 54 kg dryers, a packager and an automatic drying and ironing system for uniforms.

3. BTB Portugal laundries The two BTB Portugal laundries are devoted exclusively to washing hospital linen from pu-blic and private centres. The BTB Seixal laun-dry, near Lisbon, has three complete flatwork ironing system, two other flatwork system with Girbau feeder and folder, and a Girbau batch washer system, plus HS-6110 and HS-6055 washers. The seventy employees can produce 18,000 to 20,000 kg per day in three shifts. In addition, in the BTB Vila Nova de Famaliçao laundry in the district of Braga, Girbau machi-nery produces 5,000 kg per day, although the system is ready to process up to 8,000 kg of linen per day.

New PB wall-type ironersThe leitmotiv of Girbau ironers is to aid ironing in order to improve the laundry’s productivity. It may seem obvious, but the PB sprang from this philo-sophy, looking again and again for the best way to im-prove the machines in order to meet this challenge.Only then can the result be understood: productivity, ergonomics and safety - all working as one in order to achieve quality and profitability.

Over twenty years in the industry, with thousands of ironers in businesses

around the world, provides clear proof of the reliability of Girbau ironing.

Maintaining the basis of its patented kinematic tensioning system, which

explains the ironing quality of Girbau’s renowned ironing quality, the new

range of ironers incorporates improvements which include a sturdier struc-

ture and new controls that let you control the speed easily and precisely to

achieve the desired residual moisture content.

The Autospeed system automatically adjusts the ironing speed depending

on the type of linen and degree of dampness. Without Autospeed the tempe-

rature fluctuates, causing uneven drying. With Autospeed the temperature is

constant and drying is even. The result: even ironing.

In this new system the folding is performed fully automatically. A system of

linen input and output photocells calculates the total length of the item, so it

is not necessary to enter the size of the linen.

Improvements in the PB havefocused on quality, reliability, energy saving, safety, ergonomics and ease of maintenance

The new design of the PB transmits the greater sturdiness of these ironers.

The Series 6 washerscontinue their advance

Series 6 MG washers are hard-mount high speed machines (they require holding down). With spin speeds of 750 rpm and a G factor of 200, they reduce resi-dual moisture between 10 and 25% compared to other hard mount washers with lower G factors. This series is available with Logi Pro control, allowing every washing parameter to be programmed, and with Coin Control for coin-op services.

Recent months have seen various applications developed for the Series 6 washers.IMTxIMTx is a software package for Se-

ries 6 washers with Inteli control. It allows you to program washers easily and intuitively from your computer. The programs are stored in a memory card and can be loaded into as many washers as required.ISIThe IMTx package includes the ISI

(Inteli Simulator). This is a computer simulator that allows users to practice running and programming machines with a great sense of reality. It is ideal for training laundry operators.LOGI PROThe new control extends the possi-

bilities of Logi control, making it a so-lution for those who need more sche-duling options than those allowed in Logi, but without the need to acquire the multitude of options of the pro-fessional Inteli control.

Available in 13kg, 17kg and 23kg capacities.

Branching out into coin-op premises to provide value

MarcCaraltProduct manager commercial division Girbau Group

Within the commercial division of Girbau, the co-in-op laundry sector is growing rapidly. As in any business, any branching out that provides greater value to customers is a key factor for success. For the customer, saving time with shor-ter wash cycles, achieving a better washing qua-lity and having the necessary software for either heavily soiled or delicate items are differential values. From the owner’s standpoint, energy savings, maintenance savings and incident- free equip-ment are the keys to controlling running costs and achieving the expected profitability and re-liability. In this sense, Girbau equipped laundries really stand out. Their 9kg washers are certified by Energy Star as those that consume the least water and energy of any on the market. They are easy for anyone to use, and their hardwearing de-sign means they last for years and years. In addi-tion, they are easy to connect both to payment centres and to external dosing to satisfy the most demanding customers. The difference in service and quality can be seen in the first wash in a Girbau coin-op laun-dry. So say our clients. Yet the coin-op sector has looked and should look for more added value. Some of the laundries recently equipped by Girbau are examples of the direction the coin-op business needs to take. It is a case of creating different spaces for different coin-op laundries by looking for customers that are different to the traditional ones. For instance, a laundry intended for middle or upper middle class customers. On this very page you can see such ca-ses, for instance a laundry in Portugal designed following the guidelines set out in the Feng Shui philosophy. This is just one example of the oppor-tunities that can open up for the industry if we open our minds and go beyond the traditional customer base. From automated coin-op laundries requi-ring no staff, to coin-ops that offer ironing, folding and delivery, or OPL laundries. The route the sec-tor chooses to follow can be as wide as we wish, as long as we are able to know how to find and promote added value. The Girbau touch is what makes its machi-nery stand out. Devising a different project with a competitive advantage is your contribution. Toge-ther, the two of us can make a great team.

Girbau washes for the Hilton hotels in Turkey

Working for Hilton would not have been possible for Girbau without the co-llaboration of Permark, its dealer in Turkey, which has shown itself to be highly professional in its dealings with the hotel chain, from the initial project advice through to its completion and maintenance.

Five hotels that the international Hilton Garden Inn chain has recently ope-ned in Turkey have Girbau equipment in their laundries. These are the first hotel establishments Hilton has launched in Turkey as part of its new hotels division.

The installation of Girbau equipment has been completed in the following hotels: Hilton Garden Inn Kutahya, Hilton Double Tree Laleli, Hilton Garden Inn Konya, Hilton Garden Inn Urfa and Hilton Double Tree Avonos. In addition, Gir-bau will install laundry equipment in two Hilton hotels that are soon to open their doors. These are the Hilton Garden Inn Mardin and the Hampton by Hil-ton Bursa.

In the laundries that are operating, Girbau has installed two high-capacity washing machines, two or three smaller capacity dryers, a flatwork dryer and finishing equipment.

A new concept in hotelsThe hotels in the Hilton Garden Inn are a new kind of establishment, offering customers a personalised service tailored to their needs, and at a reasonable price. It is aimed at a wide range of customers, from people who want to enjoy a weekend of leisure, to executives and business travellers. The hotels have a fully-equipped gymnasium. In every room there are kits with everything needed to practice sports. In addition, many of the chain’s hotels also have a swimming pool and whirlpool. Such facilities are essential to the existence of a laundry with enough capacity to accommodate not only the de-mand for conventional washing that occurs in a hotel, but also the extra demand generated in the fitness room and swimming pool.
