1914.HisfatherdiedsuddenlywhileonleavewithhisfamilyinJerseyin1921.Hiswidow,May

Launders,andthechildrensettledinTunbridgeWellsandHarrywaseducatedatSkinners'

School.

Heleftschoolintheearlythirtiesandworkedforatimeasafarmhandtosupporthismother

andyoungersiblingsbuteventuallyjoinedtheMetropolitanPoliceandafterashorttimeonthe

beatjoinedtheCID.Helefttheforcein1936,commentingthathehadtotelltoomanyliesto

extractthetruth!HejoinedtheRAFasanAircraftmancirca1937.Heelectedtobecomeaircrew

androsetotherankofSgt,qualifyinginitiallyasanavigatorthenasapilot.In1939hewas

grantedacommissionandmarriedmymotherMargaretLaunders.(Theirfatherswere
