It is essential that tutors attend these meetings.

These meetings are held each term on the Thursday following registration

day to provide tutors with their class lists and discuss vital matters of

concern in an informal and relaxed manner.

Welcome to the Launceston School for Seniors for Term 1, 2018.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION - PLEASE READ

CAREFULLY

About the School -The Launceston School for Seniors is primarily

an organisation for people over 50 who like mental and physical

activity and want to pursue existing interests or develop new ones.

Activities of the School are ‘personal goal’ oriented, with the

intention of giving satisfaction to those who participate in its

activities. This satisfaction is achieved through the interaction with

other like-minded citizens and sharing information on a variety of

topics.

Courses this term - This syllabus contains the details of 67 courses

and activities that are available for Term 1, 2018.

Location of courses - Most activities take place at 8 High Street,

with some taking place at Glenara Lakes Auditorium, while others

may be held at other venues as indicated in the syllabus.

Term fee - The term fee is $45 which entitles you to attend as many

subjects as you wish, providing there are vacancies.

Classes with limits - Some classes have limits for various reasons.

These classes are listed on page 9 and are listed in bold letters on

the Enrolment Form.

Enrolment procedure - Enrolments should be made on registration

day as detailed on page 8, however, late enrolments can be made by

visiting the School office at High Street which is open between

9.00am and 12.30pm each weekday during term.

Parking - We are fortunate to have some off-street parking available

on our premises at High Street. Nevertheless, these spaces can be

filled quite quickly. There are also some spaces on High Street and

York Street with a 3 hour limit.

Please drive carefully - Please take care when entering and leaving

the High Street premises, particularly at those times when some classes

have finished and the next classes are about to begin. Pedestrians - for

your own safety, please use the pedestrian gate.

Our School - Our Family - At the Launceston School for Seniors we

like to think of ourselves as one big family where we look after one

another and all pitch in to share the family responsibilities.

We are extremely fortunate to have more than 70 volunteer tutors

presenting these 67 courses and activities for this term. It is only

because of the commitment of these people, and our volunteer

committee members, none of whom receive any payment for their

services, that we are able to offer to you, our members, your choice of

any number of these activities for the princely sum of $45 per term.

And that price even covers a cuppa and biscuit between classes. Try

and find this value elsewhere. We are also very fortunate to have

access to the buildings that we use, which do cost us money to lease.

We should all be very grateful that we are able to take advantage of all

that the School has to offer, but it also comes with a responsibility for

each and every one of us to show our appreciation, take a pride in the

organisation and share some of the load. We should not expect our

volunteers to carry the responsibility for everything.

All we ask is that we all accept some responsibility to help out in

keeping the School premises clean and tidy and secure so that we can

all enjoy those things that make our School so precious. These things

don’t just happen and I’m sure you all appreciate the effort that your

tutors have put in, presenting your class subject. PLEASE HELP – to

clean up and wash up after morning tea – washing up with hot

water and detergent, not just rinsed under the hot water tap - leave

the class room and kitchen clean and tidy – where possible, help to

replace the furniture as required – ensure that windows are closed,

lights and heaters turned off etc. Above all, take pride in the School

and treat it as you would your own home. Thank you!

Exploring writing through memoir, fiction and non-fiction in a supportive and stimulating atmosphere.

The Friday Writing Workshop over-reached itself in 2017, so Nancy Corbett and Patience Stewart have decided to create a second class in

2018, which will run at the same time and they will share all their materials between them. Once the first class is full - 12 members, the other will then be created, this will enable new members to join our

class without changing the quality. We look forward to welcoming new and old members at 12.30 on Friday 9th March, 2018

EMERGENCY CONTACTS

Fortunately, emergencies don’t happen very often, but when they do, we

need to know who we should contact on your behalf. So, please let us

know your wishes.

Firstly - Register your details at the office.

Quite a number of people have taken the opportunity to register their

details which are kept in an envelope in the office. If you haven’t

registered your details, but wish to do so, would you please call at the

office or speak to your tutor or a committee member.

Also, if your details have been changed since lodging your original form,

please provide your updated information.

And then - Write the details on the back of your name badge.

Everyone is encouraged to write their prime contact/s on the back of their

name badge in case of emergency.

It is essential that you wear your name badge when

attending classes in all locations. Why? - see Page 7 and

CLASSROOM ETIQUETTE

Please Respect Your Tutor and Guest Speakers

Eating and Drinking in Class - An opportunity for a cuppa and biscuit is

provided between classes. Please have respect for your tutor and fellow

class members by not taking food and drink into the classroom.

Running Late? - Similarly, if circumstances cause you to be late for your

class, which can happen to any of us, please enter the room as

unobtrusively as possible.

Mobile Phones - And, last but not least, please turn off your mobile phone

during class time.

WHAT DO I DO??

If I am interested in joining a class after registration day??

If you realise that you may wish to join another class, but did not register for

it on registration day, don’t despair!

Phone the tutor to check that the class is not over-subscribed and advise that

you would like to fit in. BUT, please do not just turn up.

ATTENDANCE AT CLASSES

Some tutors have expressed their concern that some members who had

registered for particular classes did not turn up on the first day of the

term. It was pointed out that in a number of classes the first day was used to

advise members of the program for the rest of the term.

There have also been similar occasions in some classes with limited

numbers. It is important that those who register for these classes have a

commitment to attend for the full term. It is disappointing when their non-

attendance may well result in other committed members being excluded

from the class.

We realise that there are many reasons for non-attendance from time to time

during the term. Some tutors like to be informed of absences, while it is not

required by others. Your tutor will let you know of the position in their class

at the beginning of the term.

We are sure that our members appreciate the effort of our tutors who are all

volunteers. We continue to have more than eighty tutors and committee

members who give their time and effort on a purely voluntary basis for the

benefit of the School and its members. Their efforts are greatly appreciated

by us all.

Course 42 Limit 30 Multi Media - Painting and Sketching 9.30 - 12.00 8 High Street Combining Art Room & Room 1

We invite participants to bring their own supplies and work in which ever medium they choose. (Oils to be used in Room 1 only (no solvents) and clean up to be carried out at home). This class is spread between the Art room and Room 1 and students may choose to come for just an hour or

longer. All levels of experience are catered for with members experienced in oils, acrylics, coloured pastels and pencils and willing to share that

experience and support each other. This class provides a space for students to work autonomously and enjoy the energy and creative atmosphere

provided.

Why Wear a Name Badge? Why is it Important?

The obvious reason - to show that we are proud to be a member

of the School and to identify ourselves when engaging with others in

our classes and general social interaction which is the basic ethos of

the School. It is also proof that we are financial members for the term

and indicates to tutors that we are entitled to attend classes.

But more importantly, recent emergency incidents have proved

the absolute importance of being able to identify the person involved

and particularly their emergency contacts, which has enabled the

emergency services to make contact to ascertain vital medical

information about the patient and to ease the concerns of their loved

ones.

And also - Insurance. The School has a duty of care under the

terms of its insurance policy, that in the event of an injury or medical

emergency to someone on premises being used by us during term

time, we are required to let the person’s emergency contact/s know as

soon as possible.

All of this is why the School has established procedures to ensure the

welfare of our members, particularly in cases of emergencies.

It is the responsibility of each member to contribute to

their own welfare by complying with these procedures.

Registration Day for Term 1, 2018 is on

Tuesday March 6th, 2018 at

8 High Street.

Registration: Term fee is $45 per term no matter how many classes

you wish to attend. We think you will agree that this fee represents

extremely good value for money.

Enrolment Form Two enrolment forms are in the centre of this syllabus book which you

can complete at your leisure prior to Registration Day. Simply complete

all the details and place a cross next to the classes in which you wish to

enrol, then separate the two forms by cutting them apart down the centre.

Registration Day procedure is as follows:-

1. Enter through the main entrance where you will be met by our

volunteers who will guide you through the procedure.

Doors open at 9.30am. Close at 12.00.

2. If necessary, complete your enrolment form and/or membership

application form (The A4 Membership Application form should be filled

in by new members). Then have your form stamped for registration

purposes.

3. For classes with limits - In room 2, check at the table which has the

register for that class. (These classes are listed on next page)

4. Then - proceed to the payment tables. Note: EFTPOS now available.

(For those not registering for a class with limits - proceed directly to the

payment tables after your form has been numbered).

Improving Your Well Being and Regaining the Zest for Life.

Half hour of light workout, exercising whole of body, including joints.

Half hour of stretches and groundwork.

Half hour of Shibashi and breathing exercises.

Work on breathing, stances, memory and balance.

Cost: First 2 visits $4.00. If satisfied after 2 visits, the charge is $40-00 for

a year’s membership, plus $4.00/visit.

Seniors cup of tea/coffee and biscuits at the end of the session.

Note: Please wear loose comfortable clothing, also bring a towel and

water bottle.

Guarantee: For those who commit to regular attendance,

the benefits will be significant.

Social Ballroom Dancing is a fun social time which will improve both mental and physical fitness. We will do a mixture of easy New Vogue and ballroom

dancing with a small cost of $8 per week. Please join us and experience the joy of dance. Water provided.

ON REGISTRATION DAY !

Need to wait in line to register? - If you are NOT intending to

enrol for a restricted class, why stand in a queue waiting to register when

you can easily do so slightly later in the day. As long as you arrive

before 12.00 noon, you will not miss out. Hopefully this will mean

people registering for a restricted class would also not have such a long

uncomfortable wait.

Parking might also be less of a problem, with more scattered

enrolments. Why not have an extra hour in your warm bed in the

morning?

But, don’t forget Morning Tea. - It has been a tradition in the

School that members bring a plate for morning tea on Registration Day

which has provided an ideal and enjoyable opportunity to renew

friendships and to catch up with fellow members and friends in a relaxed

and informal atmosphere. We welcome the continuation of this tradition

and would be pleased to have your support.

IMPORTANT DATES FOR TERM 1, 2018

EASTER For the Easter Break our last day will be Thursday 29th March and

the term will restart on Monday 9th April. This means that we will

lose one Friday in the term. To compensate for this -

Friday classes will commence on Friday 9th March.
