studying in my of fi ce for session of C BS .

When we left South Africa in January, everything was going pretty smoothly. Our lastsession of Cape Bible Seminary (CBS) in PortElizabeth in November went very well w ith fivestudents. We w ere a bl e to have f ou r sess ions ofCBS in 1989 and w e w ere very pleased with theresponse. So far we have had 50 students take atleast one class. Our co rr e spondence cou rs e swere also going ve ry well with several studentsfinishing courses and receiving certificates.

A program that is stilt in its infancy, but effective,is th e "Two Oceans" preaching program. We haveheld c lasses for t en b ro th er s who want ed t o learnhow to preach and at 4:00 on Sundays we go andhave one of these brothers preach while I gradehis se rmon . It has worked well. W e call it "TwoOceans" because from w he re the ba rn is locatedin which we meet, we can see both the Atlantic andIndian Oceans at one t ime.

Since arriving in the U.S., we have receivedseveral letters from Steve Zimmerman saying thatthe work is progressing well. Please continue topray for all of these activities and the Zimmermansin Sou th Africa .

All children in S.S. at Bishop Lavis got Bibles for Christmas.

Fran's FeelingsHI folks! How is it? We hope and pray you arewell and happy as you live for Christ. We can'tcomplain, because we are enjoying our stay in

    Amer ica .

Pete came up with the idea of me answeringsome questions we often ge t about South Africa. So I'll try to do that. One of the most common quest ions is, "What isSouth Africa really like?" South Africa is verymodern in tha t th ere are regular grocery stores,

small malls, t hea te r s, r es tau ran ts , s ch oo ls a ndhospitals. The cost of living is twice as highcompared to America. South Africa has everything we need, but not as available nor qui te thevariety as America. There is a 13% sales ta x oneverything except s taple foods. Petrol is around$3.00 a gallon fortunately our Mazda 323 getsvery good mileage. On the freeways the speedlimit is 75 mph. That is nice because the desertsure is boring at times.

We live in th e s ub ur b of Kraaifontein, 18 milesout of Cape Town. The house we live in is verynice. There are three bedrooms, living room with afireplace, dining room, kitchen, bathroom and two

toilets ( the toilets are in their own separate littlerooms). It is solid concrete with no central heatingor ai r and no screens. I guess the y don't makes cr eens bec ause the bugs a ren't bad. Almostevery house has a concrete fence surrounding th eproperty; we have a waist -high front fence and asix-foot wall around the s ides and back. All th epeople of South Africa are getting an opportunityto buy or rent a house, but not all people want toput their money into property.

Since Sou th Africa is as far south of t he equa to ras Florida is north, the weather is very similar. Themain difference is that the seasons are opposite. Itis very strange to go to th e beach on ChristmasDay and wear a winter coat in August. Thewindblows pretty hard all year long.

South Africa is a beautiful place especially theCape area. It is rated one of the top five mostbeautiful cities in the world. We would love to haveyou come for a visit and see for yourself.

Until later, Lord willing, we love you all.Fran on furlough.

Zu l u , X t i o s h a or Ch r i s t i a n ?Whenever we read the newspapers or watch thenightly news, we often see tribal faction fighting takingplace in South Africa. This alarms us very much andmakes us wonder if the gospel can ever reach people

who are so tribalistic in their thinking and ways of life. Can the gospel ever reach people who are so divided intheir ways of thinking, their languages, and their cultures? Is there anything that we can truly unify on?This Is one of the questions that we have been askedconcerning our mission work in South Africa and fromthe human standpoint there are no easy answers. Fromthe spiritual standpoint though, there is a very clear answer. In August of 1989, we held a Cape Bible Seminarysession at the local church of Mfuleni in Cape Town. One of the discussions that was en te red into t he n was adiscussion of the African ways of life. When we got tothe question of how tribal thinking fits into the decisionmaking process of a Christian's life, one of the brotherstried to set the record straight. He said, "Brother, whenwe become a follower of Jesus, we are no longer aZulu, Xhosa or Tswana, we are Christians. We do awaywith these things. We are very proud of our heritage, yes, bu t we now know that to be a Christian is a betterthing than to be Xhosa."We can unify on these same facts as Christians allover the world. As Paul says in Galatians 3:26-29, thereis no distinction between us as Christians, bu t w e are allone in Jesus Christ. Whether we were born Zulu,American, Canadian or Swiss, we are all called by the

    Vol. 1. No. 2 FalI1990

same God who gave His Son for everyone. It is onthese facts and in this hope that we do our work inSouth Africa to make the gospel known to people whoso desperately need it.

Fu r l o ugh T r a v e l sAs we have very quickly learned in this, our firstfurlough, there is a lot more travelling than we everdreamed of. Sincewe started travelling in February, we

have travelled over 30,000 miles, trying to visitall of oursupporting churches and individuals. Throughout thesummer we were also involved in several camps and

Vacation Bible Schools. One of our most enjoyable tripswas through Canada in August where we took part inthe Laughren family reunion held in Norway Bay, Quebec. There we saw people that I had not seen in 15-20years and, of course, Fran had never seen. Everyone inthe family was there except for three cousins and It wasa great time. Thanks so much, folks, for moving the reunion fooA/ard two years just so we could be there! Wereally appreciate it!We still have a lot of travelling left to do before we

return to South Africa in March, as we have tripsplanned to Tennessee, Michigan (where we will spendChristmas) and even Canada again. Please continue topray for our Journeys, as we tell of the work in CapeTown.

Work IX I e e d sSeveral people have asked what is our biggestneed in our work in South Africa. Far and away ourbiggest need is transportation. In1985 we purchased a

Mazda 323 when we first arrived and when we left inJanuary of 1990, it had 184,000 kms. on it. Since thattime we have learned that it was involved in an accident, but not totalled. We have been in n ee d o f a vanfor t he work and we thank those churches and individuals who have helped us so much in trying to get thisneed met.

Many churches have responded to the need forSunday School supplies and we think we now havemore than we can handle. The only thing lacking nowis assorted craft materials for VBS's. Thank you to thoseof you who have helped.Again, we can never say enough thanks to those inthe U.S. who have helped meet our needs on furlough.Things such as housing and transporta tion have beenadequately met and we reallyappreciate the help of all.

P r a y e r s For the Christians in the townships around CapeTown as the rain this win te r has been th e worst in

147 years. For the cont inued success of Cape Bible Seminary. So far the Zimmermans have had 67 students thisyear with 2 sessions left. Gordon and EstelleNelson as they plan to come toCape Town and work starting in January 1991. Strength as we travel on furlough. That we may be effective servants for Him.

F r a n 's F e e lin g sHi folks! Here we are again, with another quarterof the year gone. Several folks have asked us how wefeel alut being in the States and how do we feel

about going back to South Africa. So I thought I wouldbring it up in this letter. It has been almost nine months since we firstlanded at the Atlanta airport. This year of furlough hasgone by so quickly, and we have been having a grandtime. As you know, most of the time we have been onthe road. We have had the chance to see the country

side, and we have seen many people (some for the firsttime), and we have done a great deal of eating.Though we are tired all the time, we can honestly saythat this furlough has been fun and it has been refreshing. Sure, we will hate to leave, because we like America, but it willalso be good to ge t back to South Africa. Our plans are. Lord willing, to go back to SouthAfrica the end of March, 1991. That t ime will soon behere, and I think we will be ready for it. You see, we

have made South Africa our home. Our house and almost all of our belongings (we are taking the rest fromhere back with us) are in Cape Town. We also have acar and a very special pet to go back to. Ifwe did notmake up our minds to make South Africa 'our home," itwould very difficult to stay there, to be happy there, and to be effective workers for the Kingdom. In the past four and a half years in South Africa, wedeveloped many good relationships, and we missthem.Ionly hope they miss us as much as we miss them. Ha!We are not afraid of going back at this time with all thetrouble because we know it won't affect us . Besidesthat, if any of you remember, back in 1985 when wefirst went to South Africa, there were riots going on andfolks worried about us. We were fine then, so we feelwe will be fine this time as well. But, please keep us inyour prayers anyway, because we never know for surehow things willturn out.Until the next letter, we hope and pray you are welland stay that way. We wish all a very happy holidayseason, and as we are sure God has already blessed yougreatly,we pray Hewill continue to blessyou as you livefo r Him.

We greet you in the name of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Firs tand foremost, Fran and I would like to wish you and yours a very merry Christmas,Never forget the real reason for the season as this world tends to lose sightof the true meaning of Christmas. We hope that you have a great time withfamily and friends wherever you may spend i t .In November we had several things happen that encouraged us in our workfor South Africa. November 4 saw us at Berea church here in Hampton on theirFaith-Promise day. We were totally overwhelmed by the response that day andespecially by the special offering of nearly $3,000 for our transportationneeds in South Africa. After all that they have done for us this year, andnow this. We were shocked at the response as this was over and above theirnormal giving. Thank-you so much from the bottom of our hearts for all thatyou have done. One of our favorite trips this year came from November 10-21. We spokein Mountain City Tennessee on the 11th at the Dewey Christian Church in themorning and at Central Church of Christ in Lenoir N.C. in the evening. Wewere able to report on our work at both places and enjoyed great hospitality. We again went back to Mountain City to share our mission work on Wednesdaythe 14th. While in the upper east Tennessee area from the 12th to the 21st,we were guests of Ed and Donna Hayes who live in Jonesborough Tennessee. While there, we were able to see several friends from that area that we neededto see as this \ras to be one of our last trips to the area before we returnto South Africa next March. At the end of the week on November 18th, we spokeat the Fall Branch Church, which has supported us faithfully our first termon the field. We had a great Thanksgiving dinner there that added to thevisit. Thank-you one and all for the good time that we had while up in youra r e a . ^Thanksgiving was spent with the people here in Hampton (it had been 6years since our last time.) Mark and Annette Tuttle were also here from ColumbusOhio. While they were here, we were able to touch bases on our financialsituation and make some plans for the rest of furlough. They are doing agreat job and we had a good time together. Please continue to pray for themas they serve the Lord in this way.We leave Hampton on December 5 or 6 and travel through Pennsylvania toCanada for speaking appointments before going to Lansing Michigan for Christmaswith Fran's family. We will be back in Hampton some time in January and willbe making plans to head home shortly after that.Again, thanks for your support this month. We hope you have a greatholiday season. May God bless.
