During 2005 Columbia Hospital once again proved it was a year oftremendous achievement for our patients and the community. For a secondyear in a row, hospital employees and doctors activated their hurricane disasterplan when Hurricane Wilma began its path across the state of Florida. Despiteits surprisingly strong winds and rainfall, Columbia Hospital remained fullyoperational and provided exceptional care to the community as residents dealtwith extensive power outages and highways with dangerous intersections.

Columbia Hospital’s focus on improved patient care and safety continuedin 2005 with the implementation of an innovative and state-of-the-art barcoding technology designed to prevent medication errors. The new system,called eMAR (Electronic Medication Administration Record), scans a specialbarcoded armband on each patient that reads the patient’s current drug history,including allergies and side effects. This data is entered into the hospital’scomputer system which then ensures that the correctly identified patientreceives the correct medication at the correct time.

Our Emergency Room implemented a five-level triage system to ensure that patients are seen according totheir degree of emergent need.

In early 2005 the hospital opened its new Sleep Disorders Center. Located in the Columbia Medical Plaza, theCenter offers treatment and hope to hundreds of patients suffering from potentially fatal sleep disorders.

The hospital’s state-of-the art Radiology Department introduced a new, non-invasive imaging advance in thedetection of breast cancer. The Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the breast allows the physician tocharacterize or spot lesions not picked up by a mammogram. Also, to further accommodate our patients’ busyschedules the Radiology Department extended its hours to include Saturday morning.

In 2005 Columbia Hospital donated office space to two nonprofit organizations: the Susan G. Komen BreastCancer Foundation and the Southeast Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. By eliminating the cost of rent, thesenonprofit organizations are able to provide even more services to those in need.

Finally, we are very proud to announce that for the third consecutive year Columbia Hospital was recognizedfor its participation in the Palm Beach County School District’s Partner in Education program by earning theprestigious Gold Medal Award. Also, the hospital was inducted on the School District’s Wall of Fame in recognitionof its outstanding support of various educational programs at Palm Beach Lakes High School and Indian RidgeSchool. On a statewide level the hospital was awarded the Friends of Education Award, and our very own SharonTarlow, Coordinator for Educational Services, received the state’s “Award of Excellence for Corporate Mentoring.”

While these awards and accolades are most appreciated, all of us at Columbia Hospital remain 100%committed to our mission of providing quality, compassionate, and cost-effective health care and being responsiveto the needs of our patients, physicians, and community.

Columbia Hospital employees donated $9,000 to the HCA Hope Fund for their colleagues in New Orleansaffected by Hurricane Katrina.

Thanks to the generosity of Columbia Hospital and the efforts of twophysicians wanting to give back to those in need, a hospital in Port-au-Prince,Haiti, received three containers loaded with over $3.5 million worth of modernmedical equipment in October 2005. Dr. Wilhelm Larsen, a Haitian native andretired oncologist, and Dr. Albert LaTorra, a semi-retired general surgeon, paidthe shipping expenses themselves and are in the process of establishing theLaTorra-Larsen Medical Foundation for future fundraising projects. Among thefirst priorities of donated funds will be to build a lead-lined room toaccommodate the X-ray machine and install electrical outlets for the electrichospital beds.

The two doctors have even biggerdreams than outfitting the hospital.They want to build a medical school,a nursing school, a dental school,and medical clinics in rural villages.In the meantime, the two doctors areplanning another trip and hope torenew their contacts with govern-mental officials and others in thecountry to help them reach theirgoals.

Blood pressure screenings were conducted at theSenior Expo sponsored by the Jewish CommunityCenter, Kaplan Branch.

Hospitals with Heart: Columbia Hospital was one of eighthospitals in Palm Beach County to participate in donating atotal of $210,00 to the Caridad Clinic which serves migrantfarmworkers and their families.
