Tree Nettle
What is it?• Latin name Urtica ferox• Maori name - Ongaonga• Is covered in stinging hairs that put poison into
the skin• Forms dense thickets up to 2m tall
Clinical Signs• Initial symptoms are itchiness, hives, drooling,
vomiting, diarrhoea• Anaphylaxis- a sudden allergic reaction that can
become severe: breathing problems, tachycardia, unconsciousness, gastro intestinal issues and eventually coma and death if left untreated
Treatment• Contact a vet• Keep airways clear• WRAPT (Warmth, reassure/reassess/record, ABCs,
position for comfort, transport)• Vet: Fluids, Epinephrine (adrenalin), oxygen,
antibiotics for secondary infections
