The Biblioteca Nacional de España, together with Latin American national libraries, has promoted the Latin American Digital Library project.
This project consists in the development of a portal that will enable the access to multimedia documentary assets. These will constitute the assets that each library participating in the project has decided to digitalize and include in the project.
The basis of this viewer is an advanced search engine of documentary assets, a contribution to the project made by virtue of a collaboration agreement with the BNE by the National Library of New Zealand, responsible for its development.

At the beginning of 2009, the National Library of New Zealand (NLNZ) and the BNE discussed the possibility of "restructuring" the prototype of National Libraries Global (NLG) -developed by the NLNZ and the National Library of Singapore for the presentation of online works belonging to national libraries- in the aim of establishing a portal in Spanish and Portuguese.
In August, on the occasion of the IFLA, they met several times in Madrid and Milan in order to shape the project and establish the working lines.
At the beginning of October 2009 the first version of the prototype was ready.
In November of that same year, the BNE visited the NLNZ with the objective of assessing, revising and learning about the technological part of the prototype.
In February 2010 the prototype was transferred to BNE servers.

The objective of the prototype is showing the feasibility of using a compilation, aggregation and access model to combine the works belonging to national libraries in an only tool.
Users will be able to:1. Visit the home page of the Latin American Digital Library and gain
immediate access to the articles included in the collections.2. Use innovative functions, such as segmented searches and
advanced surfing.3. Subscribe to notifications on new contents.4. Provide personal metadata, such as labels and comments.
National Libraries may introduce the Latin American Digital Library to their own metaseacrh systems.

The software developed by the National Library of New Zealanad is based on the OAI-PMH protocol (Open Archives Initiative-Protocol Metadata Harvesting).
This protocol is one of the most popular ones in the search and recovery of information, as it is used as a deposit to store and obtain any kind of information in any electronic format.
Through a simple interface, access to metadata of contents in XML format is provided from different sources, platforms and repositories.

The webpage of the Latin American Digital Library is shaped in such a way that the systems can have access to the OAI servers of the libraries of different countries in a dynamic way, with the objective of updating the contents on a periodic basis.
Likewise, contents of libraries that were not sent initially (and that do not have an OAI server) will also be uploaded.

Performance of the Portal.
It will obtain the data from the different repositories:
The data will be updated in the portal through calls to the servers where they are hosted (generally OAI servers).
Data will be indexed so searches can be as quick as possible.
Different criteria may be used for the searches. Results of the searches will be presented in surfing
lists with pagination.
It will enable the access to the documents in the origin (each element of the list will have access to the document on the original server).

The Biblioteca Nacional de España presented a prototype at the 21st General Assembly of ABINIA, held in Cartagena de Indias (Colombia) in October 2009.
The BNE is an active member of ABINIA, the Association of Latin American National Libraries founded in Mexico the 14th December 1989. This inter-regional association became, in October 1999, an International Organism, under the name of: Asociación de Estados Iberoamericanos para el Desarrollo de las Bibliotecas Nacionales de Iberoamérica, thus keeping the abbreviation of ABINIA.The Biblioteca Nacional de España and the Biblioteca Nacional de Chile collaborated in the pilot version of the portal.
